View 3 RepliesI'm having an issue installing Fedora 11 on my system. After the install, I remove the DVD media, reboot the system, and it reports an error stating that Windows cannot start, missing or corrupted hal.dll file. I appologize if this is a common problem or has already been answered. My searches haven't yielded helpful information, mostly what I've found is people attempting to setup dual-boot machines or boot Fedora via the Windows Boot Loader.I have experience in computers, although I am completely new to Linux/Fedora. Through my work, I have experience using AIX, but no experience installing or managing drive partitions. The system in question is a 5 year old Windows XP system that I built myself. The system has two drives (C: and D: in Windows). The C: drive was the Windows install drive and the D: drive was added later for additional storage. I am attempting to completely overwrite Windows on this machine. I want it to single boot into Fedora 11, I am not looking for a dual-boot system. The system will become a network file server.
The specs of the system are...
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3500+
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-K8NSNXP-939
RAM: 2GB
I downloaded the DVD iso for Fedora 11 x86_64 via Bit Torrent, burned the ISO to DVD and booted the system from DVD. I ran through the install (Anaconda 11.5.0.59) and see the following information on the screens..
I've been searching for tutorials on how to install awesome, it would be nice if someone can guide me on how to install Awesome Window Manager.

I boot my machine and run LiveCD and I can see me 36G raptor in GParted or partitioner or under Places but when i try to install 9.1, there is no drive after the keyboard layout in partitioner. Can anyone please shed some light on this. I have changed sata ports but that didnt help either. I don't understand how it would be a driver issue if I can see the drive and partition it.

View 3 Replies View RelatedIs there some way top stop the "blind effect" of compiz so that when you double click the top title bar of a window that it maximizes the window instead of the rolling up type effect? Also when i place my mouse on the top right of the screen it brings it to a choosing window type mode where you can pick which window you would like to open, is it possible to get this on the top left of the screen instead? Lastly when I use Kdebluetooth4 to send a file to my computer where does that file save to?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI want to properly install Unbuntu on my multi boot pc. I would like to install to E partition which is currently ntfs. I have never installed Linux. What drive should the boot loader go? I can format E partition during install? Does it still need a swap file partition? If so, can that be made from E partition? How big? I'd like to have a boot menu to choose Ubuntu or a choice that takes me to the windows boot loader. Would that boot loader get wiped if I did a fresh install of 7 to the I drive? Also, what would be the proper way to upgrade Ubuntu? I see a lot of post where people are doing it wrong.
Here is my drives layout. Should install Ubuntu to my SSD J drive instead? I tried the live CD. Seems to work well. I have a Asus Max Formula MB, Phenom II 6core, ATI 4870. MB has a built in Via sound card. Not sure if that was working.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've just installed Fedora 11 and have noticed some funkiness regarding "window and button sounds".
Here are my observations: (All found using "Sound Preferences")
If "Output Volume" (OV) is set to max, and "Alert Volume" (AV) is set to max, the "window and button sounds" (WABS) are very loud. This seems to be correct.
If I begin to move OV to a lower slider value, the WABS become quieter twice as fast as other sounds (such as ..... videos). However, all sounds seem to get quieter in some sort of inverse curve. (As opposed to the more normal linear fashion.) At about 50% level the WABS are non-existent and other sounds are way too quiet.
Now here's the funky thing. If I leave OV at full and begin to reduce AV, whenever a WABS is heard, the OV volume temporarily reduces to the AV level until the sound is finished.
And here's the uber funky thing: If I reduce OV by 25% and AV by 50% and an WABS occurs, the OV volume temporarily changes to a 75% reduced volume. This mathematical relationship remains true until the combined value is greater than 100% reduction, at which point the speaker icon temporarily shows a mute icon (small red "x") and no sound is heard. (This can be seen in "Sound Preferences" and the Gnome-Panel icon.)
Another thing I've noticed is the "Master" slider in "Advance Volume Control" hits rock bottom when the "Sound Preferences" slider is only at 50%. (The terminal based alsamixer has the same behaviour.)
On a positive note, enabling Japanese input was by far the easiest it has ever been on Linux, or even Windows. Awesome! Let's just hope this iBus thingy isn't too buggy... Nyuk, nyuk!
I'm not sure how to find out exactly what my sound chip might be, but it's some nVidia nForce2 doohickey.
My hard disk is a 40 gb seagate drive with 3 logical partitions - C (Win 98), D (Data), E (Win XP Home). Yesterday, I decided to format Win 98 partition and install Fedora 11 on it. I used Live USB, custom partitioned for /, /boot and swap. Installation went fine until the Add/Delete boot screen came when I got multiple Unable to mount partition errors. Then I added Win XP (which was on sda6) and restarted the system. When the system booted, I selected Win XP but it didn't do anything. It showed blank screen and then reverted to grub boot loader screen. Then I selected Fedora time and completed installation and it works fine but XP doesn't boot.
Thinking something might have gone wrong, today I reinstalled Fedora. I chose "Install over previous Linux" and this time the installation went smoothly without any errors. However it still doesn't let me boot into Win XP. It gives a "Booting into WinXP in 3/2/1 seconds" and then goes blank and keeps repeating that message.
This is the result of fdisk -l code...
I've just recently installed the latest version of fedora on my machine. I already had win7 64-bit so I did a dual boot with the Fedora live CD using the "use largest amount of free space option"(I had intentionally left 30GB of unallocated space). The problem though is that fedora just keeps_crashing, at any point and very randomly. I didn't have this problem with ubuntu. Fedora can crash right after I initiate the boot sequence, or it can wait until the booting process starts, or the login screens shows up, sometimes it even lets my use the OS but invariably crashes. I've done numerous hard reboots which only seemed to worsen the matter, now I can barely get past login screen. This issue also happened on the live CD, but with perseverance I got fedora running on my computer.
There's an error message that shows up for a second or two right before the boot sequence is initiated, luckily(!) the system crashed at the moment it was showing and I was able to write it down :
pci 0000:01:00.0 : no compatible bridge window for [mem 0xfffe0000-0xffffffff pre f]
Here are my specs:
Intel p965 chipset (i heard this one didn't work well in previous fedora releases, maybe this is the problem?)
4GB DDR2 Ram
nVidia 8600 GTS graphic card
HDA Intel Integrated Soundcard
Intel core 2 duo E6400 processor.
For some reason Update Manager is not installing updates as of yesterday.I have it set to check daily and notify if updates are available. It has been working without issues for well over a year now.
Update Manager tells me updates are available and presents the list of security, recommended, and other updates. All are selected to update, but when I select Install Updates in Update Manager it returns with a Reading Package Information window overlaid on the main Update Manager window - building dependency tree then reading state information and dumps me back to the main Update Manager window without performing any update actions.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Fedora 12 i386 using CD#1 for a minimal install. For that during installation I selected only Base. For some reason when I started installation it was trying to install 432 packages (Base has got about 80 or so packages). i can understand there might be some dependencies, but really that much? I kept going with the installation of 432 packages, but it finally failed on gtk2-immodule-xim-2.18.3-19.fc12.i686.rpm.I need just minimal install, so I can install LXDE later on by myself.
