Fedora Installation :: Can't Boot Into F9 After The Reinstallation Of Window XP?

Jan 29, 2009

I can not boot into F9 after the reinstallation of Window XP. So I booted from the F9 live cd and tried to repair the grub. Here is what I did in the terminal:

Code:
[fedora@localhost ~]$ grub
bash: grub: command not found
[fedora@localhost ~]$ whereis grub
grub: /sbin/grub /usr/share/grub /usr/share/man/man8/grub.8.gz
[fedora@localhost ~]$ su
[root@localhost fedora]# /sbin/grub

Fedora Installation :: Install Still Attempts Window Boot

Sep 26, 2009

I'm having an issue installing Fedora 11 on my system. After the install, I remove the DVD media, reboot the system, and it reports an error stating that Windows cannot start, missing or corrupted hal.dll file. I appologize if this is a common problem or has already been answered. My searches haven't yielded helpful information, mostly what I've found is people attempting to setup dual-boot machines or boot Fedora via the Windows Boot Loader.I have experience in computers, although I am completely new to Linux/Fedora. Through my work, I have experience using AIX, but no experience installing or managing drive partitions. The system in question is a 5 year old Windows XP system that I built myself. The system has two drives (C: and D: in Windows). The C: drive was the Windows install drive and the D: drive was added later for additional storage. I am attempting to completely overwrite Windows on this machine. I want it to single boot into Fedora 11, I am not looking for a dual-boot system. The system will become a network file server.

The specs of the system are...
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3500+
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-K8NSNXP-939
RAM: 2GB

I downloaded the DVD iso for Fedora 11 x86_64 via Bit Torrent, burned the ISO to DVD and booted the system from DVD. I ran through the install (Anaconda 11.5.0.59) and see the following information on the screens..

Installation :: Unable To Boot Window XP After Installing Fedora / Solution For This?

Sep 25, 2009

My hard disk is a 40 gb seagate drive with 3 logical partitions - C (Win 98), D (Data), E (Win XP Home). Yesterday, I decided to format Win 98 partition and install Fedora 11 on it. I used Live USB, custom partitioned for /, /boot and swap. Installation went fine until the Add/Delete boot screen came when I got multiple Unable to mount partition errors. Then I added Win XP (which was on sda6) and restarted the system. When the system booted, I selected Win XP but it didn't do anything. It showed blank screen and then reverted to grub boot loader screen. Then I selected Fedora time and completed installation and it works fine but XP doesn't boot.

Thinking something might have gone wrong, today I reinstalled Fedora. I chose "Install over previous Linux" and this time the installation went smoothly without any errors. However it still doesn't let me boot into Win XP. It gives a "Booting into WinXP in 3/2/1 seconds" and then goes blank and keeps repeating that message.

This is the result of fdisk -l code...

OpenSUSE Install :: Dual Boot Loader Gone After Windows Reinstallation

Nov 19, 2010

had a dual boot system with openSuse 11.1 and Windows XP working OK - Linux boot loader was where OS selection was made (openSuse was installed after Windows) Last week I had to reinstall Windows and this removed the Linux loader from MBR and Windows booted automatically. I wanted the Linux boot loader back, checked the threads about boot loader restoration and did the following:

- downloaded Knoppix 6.2.1 ISO and burned to CD
- booted with CD
- opened terminal with root privileges and typed:
grub (ENTER)
grub> find /boot/grub/stage1 (ENTER)
> (hd0,2)
grub> root (hd0,2) (ENTER)
>Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
grub> setup (hd0) (ENTER)

setup was successful (no error messages)

Now when booting, i have an error that root (0,3) can not be mounted and "Press any key to continue"??? When hitting any key I see that there is GRUB there with all entries as in original state (Suse 11.1 and Windows) but only Windows can be booted. Then I downloaded live eval of openSuse 11.1 and did the same (booted from CD and run same commands from terminal as root) - again no errors but still "root (0,3)" can not be mounted..

Ubuntu Installation :: Refresh - Restore Current Installation Without FULL Reinstallation

Apr 7, 2011

I installed Ubuntu Lucid Lynx a while ago. but then upgraded it to 10.10

I don't have the CD with me right now and i need to fix some mistakes of mine (being a n00b to ubuntu) urgently i.e. i can't wait for morning. Is there anyway i can rollback to the time when my ubuntu installation was in mint condition?

One more thing. Let me tell you my mistake. Almost a month ago i installed Apache2 on my Laptop (for LAMP). and now i have to install Apache Tomcat for JSP development. but the problem is that the files made by Apache2 and the PHP5 installation i made are not removed with

Code:

Code:

So now the apache2 files are superseding the Apache Tomcat. hence i cannot distuinguish between apache2 or apache tomcat when i goto:

Code:

So if anyone has a way of ridding my laptop of this disease without complete overhaul, please post your replies here.

Until then, I will have to defect back to Windows.

Ubuntu Installation :: Add Swap Partition Without Reinstallation

Apr 9, 2011

I'm using ubuntu 10.04 and it seems that I forgot to set up a swap partition when I installed my system. So, I can't install hibernate, and I don't think I have any virtual memory any more.

I know that I can always set up a swap file to play the same role, but since swap file is not contiguously stored on hard disk, the performance is expected to be worse than a swap partition.

So, how can I add a swap partition and make my system boot with it every time from now on? I have unused space on my hard disk, and re-installation is NOT an option.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Installation - Reinstallation ?

Jan 31, 2011

Regarding dual boot and GRUB. Here is my situation: Year ago I bought computer i7-920 6G one HDD, I installed windows 7 on it. than I bought second HDD, placed it into master 2 position and installed ubuntu on it. after installation of ubuntu I got GRUB loader as first thing when I start computer (I don't remember the particular settings during installation) So far so good now is the question - is GRUB on the first or on the second HDD? can I swap both harddrives so the ubuntu one will be in master 1 position? I'm asking because my windows 7 is now wrecked (can't even get it to safe mode) and I need to clean the first HDD and reinstall windows.

Fedora :: Separate Window Boot Entries From Grub Loader?

Mar 16, 2011

I have PC with following specs:
Intel E7500 CPU / Intel G31 Motherboard
Kingston 800MHz 2GB RAM
Hitachi 500 GB SATA HDD + Seagate 160 GB SATA HDD

I initially had only 500 GB HDD. I installed two installations of Windows 7 Ultimate - one 32-bit and one 64-bit installations. Both working fine.

Later on I installed the 160 GB HDD and installed Fedora 13 in it in a partition. The rest space of the 160GB I am using with Windows for storing data.

Now, the boot entries of both Windows installations are in the Grub Loader of F13. Means, if I remove the 160GB HDD, I cannot boot into my Windows installations.

Now I want to remove the 160 GB HDD and install a new 2TB hard-drive. That way, I cannot log into my Windows. And I do not want to lose the Linux installation also.

How can I remove the 160 GB HDD and install a new one without sacrificing my Windows installations?

OR...Is it possible that I can copy complete image of F13 on to the new HDD, so that things are same for the Windows installations?

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot Loader Get Wiped If Did A Fresh Install Of Window 7 To The Drive?

May 23, 2010

I want to properly install Unbuntu on my multi boot pc. I would like to install to E partition which is currently ntfs. I have never installed Linux. What drive should the boot loader go? I can format E partition during install? Does it still need a swap file partition? If so, can that be made from E partition? How big? I'd like to have a boot menu to choose Ubuntu or a choice that takes me to the windows boot loader. Would that boot loader get wiped if I did a fresh install of 7 to the I drive? Also, what would be the proper way to upgrade Ubuntu? I see a lot of post where people are doing it wrong.

Here is my drives layout. Should install Ubuntu to my SSD J drive instead? I tried the live CD. Seems to work well. I have a Asus Max Formula MB, Phenom II 6core, ATI 4870. MB has a built in Via sound card. Not sure if that was working.

Fedora :: No Monitor Input During Boot, Unable To Enter Text Mode From X Window

Nov 24, 2009

I installed Fedora 11 on my system (see below) using the i686 DVD. The graphical install worked just fine, and after the system booted back up, the X server was working very well.

There is no boot text. On the other system with Fedora 11, I can see the boot text scroll by in the window and/or a progress bar at the bottom of the monitor during the boot sequence. On this system, the monitor says "No Input", and nothing appears until the login prompt for the X window. I am able to enter the BIOS configuration page and navigate through it without any issues. I can also edit the grub commands before Fedora loads without a problem.

If I boot in text mode, no login prompt appears. If I wait long enough, the monitor enters the power save mode since it is not receiving a signal. I am able to log in to the system with my user name and password, and then start the X server. Once the server starts, the monitor turns back ON and all is well.

From the X window, I use the CTL+ALT+F2 key to enter text mode. The monitor stops responding. If I press the ENTER key a couple of times, then press ALT+F7, I can briefly see the text window with a couple of login prompts before the X window starts responding again.

How can I get the text mode to work? Why is there no input to the monitor when booting?

System:
Intel D945GSEJT motherboard with Intel Atom N270 processor
2GB RAM
120GB SATA Hard Drive
Fedora 11 i686
