Ubuntu Networking :: Can Not Connect Wireless When Using Awesome Window Manager / Fix It?
May 4, 2011As I mentioned on the thread title, I can not connect wilreless under awesome window manager,it can scan wirless, but just can not connect it. I am using
sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid "...." key s:"***"
or
sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid "...." key s:**** (I try both, neither of it works)
and I do some search, and trying
sudo iwconfig eth1 essid "..." key s:*****
it is not working as well.
So, hoping you can give any solution. I am appreciating your helping.
But, interesting thing is, under gnome, it wireless is pretty good, I have no idea how it could be, but just works fine.
btw, under awesome, when I typing nm-tool, it always indicate that wlan0 is disconnect.

Oct 20, 2010as per the title - after a hard disk failure got new disk and attempting dual boot of xp and 10.10 - had to burn 10.10 twice to get it to complete the install process, but thats another story - basically on logging in there is now gnome panels - i get my 'low battery' warning etc and the login music but thats it - it does work in 'safe mode' though - what can i do to correct this?ironically had exactly same problem on the upstairs desktop when upgrading to 10.4 but buggered if i can remember how i fixed it - even checked my previous posts on it.

Jan 23, 2009I tried to install Compiz on F9 Gnome and I added a startup entry (system, preferences, personal, session, startup programs). Now I can't log in to the gnome window manager, it logs in and then logs out again. I would like to remove the entry that I created in the startup programs, but I don't know which file to edit. Where the settings to the System > Preferences > Personal > Session > Startup Programs are stored.

Jul 31, 2011I've installed the Awesome WM using "sudo yum install awesome" (as described here https://awesome.naquadah.org/wiki/Awesome-3-fedora ). I can also log into awesome, but nothing works! I can open the menu on the top left of the screen, but when I click on e.g. "Open Terminal", nothing happens. Same thing for all other menu options except "Shut down" which logs me out of Awesome. I've also tried the terminal shortcut, but nothing works.
Has anyone an idea how to make it work?
OpenSUSE :: Can't Install Window Manager
Jul 8, 2011I try to install two window manager under openSUSE 11.4 x64. AmiWb and WindowLab. I compiled them and there were no errors, but they don't show up in the login menu. If i start them by switching ALT-F2 i can't connect to the xserver. As far as i can see, it is not in USR/X11 either. Have to check where it ended up in. But in my previous experience in installing a WM i did not have any problems.

It just doesn't work. Actually, I get an entry in the session selection thing, but when I try it, the login screen disapears a sec or two, and then comes back. If after that I try to open a session with another window manager/desktop manager I get a black screen (with a few things in it) that looks like clfswm, but I can't do anything in it.
I have only used kde and gnome until now, and installed openbox to try to see how it works) so I don't know what to do right now.
In case it helps, the installation instructions. I didn't try putting the said line in my $HOME/.xsession or wherever it should be because I thought it would replace the kde login (and that is not what I want). I think what I want is a .desktop file in /usr/share/xsessions/, I'm just not sure what to put in it.

Mar 4, 2011I am trying to integrate two new machines into an old network running NFS and NIS. One machine has 11.4 and the other 11.3. On the 11.4 machine login, I select "other" and before entering my password I can select my desired window manager from the "sessions" list in the task bar. On the 11.3 machine I select "other", but nothing appears in the task bar. The "sessions" list briefly flashes up after I have already entered by password and hit enter. This machine always starts up in KDE even though I have specified GNOME as the default display manager.Also, on either machine after validating my login, I never appear as a user in the login list. I always have to select "other". Other network users in the same group or users local to the machine do not have either problem. I tried wiping my home directory, but it makes no difference. I'm guessing this has something to do with the NIS but there is no admin here anymore

Mar 17, 2010I wanted to try the JWM window manager, which is not in the Fedora repository. The author's site gives no instructions, save for users of Irix (!), so after compiling and installing I needed to find how to have it on offer at log-in. I do not want to just have jwm launched after startx runs; I want the (Gnome) log-in where I can choose a desktop or window manager for the session.
I found that Icewm and Gnome have desktop-configuration files in /usr/share/xsessions, so I created one there for JWM using the other two as a model. What I can't find is where Gnome's session manager keeps the list of available sessions. I've searched the contents of /etc/X11/xinit/ and the configuration files in my home directory for a file containing "icewm" (which I do have available), and drawn a blank.

Fedora :: Switch Window Manager In F15?
Jun 19, 2011My laptop is now running F15 and I'm so far satisfied execpt for one thing. As I expected, a problem with Mutter (Gnome 3 window manager) is 3D performance. Compositing window managers cause a serious hit in OpenGL applications. So: No playing 3D games.
On my desktop computer I use Compiz-icon's menu to quickly switch between Compiz and Metacity. I use Metacity during playing OpenGL games.
How could I do something similar in Gnome 3 without using the fallback mode all the time? Using scripts to start a separate X session for games might be a usable hack, but doesn't sound very appealing. I'm going to eventually upgrade my desktop's F14, but I think I'll wait at least until G3 gains a few more features.

How do I change the window manager? At the moment when my laptop finishes booting I'm presented with a username prompt. There are no other controls of any kind. After logging in I'm using the twm window manager. I would rather be using fvwm. I've tried putting "fvwm" in the files .xinitrc, .xsession, and .Xclients, to no avail.
I have googled this and all the answers involve doing something in Gnome (don't have it), KDE (don't have it), or the clicking a button in the session manager (no buttons). There must be some configuration or script somewhere that it is telling xdm to run twm, but so far I haven't found it.

After the install, I remove the DVD media, reboot the system, and it reports an error stating that Windows cannot start, missing or corrupted hal.dll file. My searches haven't yielded helpful information, mostly what I've found is people attempting to setup dual-boot machines or boot Fedora via the Windows Boot Loader.I have experience in computers, although I am completely new to Linux/Fedora. Through my work, I have experience using AIX, but no experience installing or managing drive partitions.The system in question is a 5 year old Windows XP system that I built myself. The system has two drives (C: and D: in Windows). The C: drive was the Windows install drive and the D: drive was added later for additional storage. I am attempting to completely overwrite Windows on this machine. I want it to single boot into Fedora 11, I am not looking for a dual-boot system. The system will become a network file server.

Jun 1, 2009I have just had a wee problem with the XFCE 4 Desktop on my Acer Aspire One with the Fedora 10 OS. Netbook worked OK this AM before work; shut down as usual. On returning from work, the Netbook seemed to boot as normal. But I only had one workspace instead of two (my usual), and when I tried to start Firefox, it was 2/3rds it's normal size and none of the usual '_ [] X' boxes in the the upper right hand corner! I tried booting into an earlier kernel version, but still the same. Had I accidentally altered the settings by any chance? Opened 'Fedora','Settings Manager', and clicked on 'Window manager'. But it just opened an error box, saying 'you do not appear to have a Window Manager'! Went (through google) to the XFCE webpage. The windows manager is called 'xfwm4'. Opened a terminal and tried 'top' - no xfwm4 process seemed to be running. So I quit out of 'top', typed 'xfwm4' and hit enter.

Jul 8, 2011I like to start Emacs as part of a login script and leave it running for the duration of my login session (which is typically weeks).
I have scripts to call emacs-client which will allow me to use a file-manager or Windows Explorer to locate files and right-click to edit them in Emacs.
I often end up with a lot of emacs windows (frames) open and I like to just be able to close them by clicking on the MS-Windows or KDE X button at the top-right.
The trouble is, if the window is the last one, this will shut down emacs which will lose all kinds of interesting history information.
As a work-around I use C-x 5 0 which won't let me close the last frame but this is often not as convenient as using the mouse
Does anyone know how to configure Emacs so that it can intercept the Window-Close button of the last frame to either request confirmation or simply disallow it?
On MS-Windows, disallowing closing of the last window may cause logoff to hang if emacs is still running but I'm not too worried about that.

Jan 14, 2015I did remake my minimal installation. My window manager produces no background picture else I did add someone. So i will do it using xorg-xli. I did find the (in other cases usual) xinitrc as /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc but in only refers to an other script
and the other script (/etc/X11/Xsession) does not include some usuable steps to include easily supplementary starting commands.

Apr 23, 2010I recently upgraded the motherboard/processor on my computer (as in quadrupled the processor and octupled the ram). The new board has a built in GPU (intel) and from searching the forums, I think this is part of the problem. Every time I boot up the computer, I need to open the Compiz icon and use it to reload the window manager before I see any title bars, borders, etc. 've tried the .bashrc hack (metacity --replace), but that doesn't do anything. In fact, whenever I open the terminal, I need to have two tabs open in order to use it, and when I close it all the borders go away again (even when I haven't done anything). Also, the onboard sound card (intel) doesn't work, but that's another task (I at least have a compatible card for that).

Feb 26, 2011I'm trying to create a media box for my TV. I've installed a barebones ubuntu from minimal install disc. After that I installed xorg and XBMC. But my usb devices are not automounting. Is there a pacakage im missing? I've read that XBMC should be able to handle mounting of devices and that no window manager or desktop environment is needed to handle this.
I followed these two tutorials and my current install is 10.04 Lucid.

Oct 18, 2010I'm fairly decent Linux admin (ok, i've been paid to do it for the last 10 years now, maybe better than fair), however this problem has me stumped. Ever since i dist-upgraded to 10.10 playing flash videos longer than a minute will *sometimes* lock up my window manager. I am unable to click on other windows, or links in current window. If i open a terminal after starting the video i can still run commands in the terminal after its locked up, but not use the mouse in any form at all.
I can get to tty1 or any other console, kill flash, kill the browser, etc. Until i restart gdm or kdm it is still locked up however. I have tested with both kde and gnome. Tested with kdm and gdm. Tested with firefox and chrome (both use different installs of flash plugin - chrome brings its own). I created a new user on the system to test enviroment, no luck there. I eventually reinstalled yesterday with a fresh 10.10, and still I am having this problem. It *often* happens, but not always. Always on videos longer than about a minute at a guess, i have not timed it. Only ever happens on flash videos - ie ..... etc.
