Fedora Installation :: Window And Button Sounds - WABS Are Very Loud
Jun 11, 2009
I've just installed Fedora 11 and have noticed some funkiness regarding "window and button sounds".
Here are my observations: (All found using "Sound Preferences")
If "Output Volume" (OV) is set to max, and "Alert Volume" (AV) is set to max, the "window and button sounds" (WABS) are very loud. This seems to be correct.
If I begin to move OV to a lower slider value, the WABS become quieter twice as fast as other sounds (such as ..... videos). However, all sounds seem to get quieter in some sort of inverse curve. (As opposed to the more normal linear fashion.) At about 50% level the WABS are non-existent and other sounds are way too quiet.
Now here's the funky thing. If I leave OV at full and begin to reduce AV, whenever a WABS is heard, the OV volume temporarily reduces to the AV level until the sound is finished.
And here's the uber funky thing: If I reduce OV by 25% and AV by 50% and an WABS occurs, the OV volume temporarily changes to a 75% reduced volume. This mathematical relationship remains true until the combined value is greater than 100% reduction, at which point the speaker icon temporarily shows a mute icon (small red "x") and no sound is heard. (This can be seen in "Sound Preferences" and the Gnome-Panel icon.)
Another thing I've noticed is the "Master" slider in "Advance Volume Control" hits rock bottom when the "Sound Preferences" slider is only at 50%. (The terminal based alsamixer has the same behaviour.)
On a positive note, enabling Japanese input was by far the easiest it has ever been on Linux, or even Windows. Awesome! Let's just hope this iBus thingy isn't too buggy... Nyuk, nyuk!
I'm not sure how to find out exactly what my sound chip might be, but it's some nVidia nForce2 doohickey.

I like to start Emacs as part of a login script and leave it running for the duration of my login session (which is typically weeks).
I have scripts to call emacs-client which will allow me to use a file-manager or Windows Explorer to locate files and right-click to edit them in Emacs.
I often end up with a lot of emacs windows (frames) open and I like to just be able to close them by clicking on the MS-Windows or KDE X button at the top-right.
The trouble is, if the window is the last one, this will shut down emacs which will lose all kinds of interesting history information.
As a work-around I use C-x 5 0 which won't let me close the last frame but this is often not as convenient as using the mouse
Does anyone know how to configure Emacs so that it can intercept the Window-Close button of the last frame to either request confirmation or simply disallow it?
On MS-Windows, disallowing closing of the last window may cause logoff to hang if emacs is still running but I'm not too worried about that.

Since yesterday I have a weird problem: sounds is way too loud. In gmixer, it starts at 485% and goes up to 65535%. I don't think I change anything in the settings which can explain that.

I have a problem where the volume in F15 is way too loud. The computer is a Dell Optiplex Gx280 using what is labeled as an Intel ICH6 for the audio card. I have the system volume at about 10% and have to still keep banshee's volume at 5% or lower otherwise it's just too loud. The system saves the volume level between reboots, however I've run alsamixer and noticed that the headphone jack is at max volume.
So, I ran:
Code:
sudo alsamixer -c0
lowered the headphone jack volume by half, then ran
Code:
sudo alsactl store 0
to save that setting. Upon rebooting, the headphone jack is back to 100%, though.
If I run
Code:
sudo alsactl restore 0
then it will restore the settings I saved but it obviously isn't doing this during bootup. How would I run this command at boot?

I've been using opensuse for about a week.(although I'm not completely a linux noob) I've been slowly moving more of the stuff I do on windows over to suse. I thought my sound was working fine until I decided to get mp3s running on amarok. I followed a bunch of guides which didn't work. While I was messing around with stuff I noticed a startup noise. I just assumed it didn't have a startup noise. At some point I broke all of my sound except running wine, so I reinstalled.
Now that I've noticed, none of my notification sounds work. Stuff like skype, firefox, and wine still give me sounds.
(If anyone could point me in the direction of a good place to get mp3s working on amarok would be nice as well.)

I have a HP laptop model HP G72 Notebook PC, Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU M 350 @2.27GHz & the Sound devices are Intel(R) Display Audio & Realtek High Definition Audio.
This machine came loaded with Windows7 & I have successfully dual booted it with Ubuntu Lucid 10.04.3.
The problem I am having is that I cannot get the sound to work at all in Ubuntu. No opening sounds or anything else that I have tried. No Web sounds, no CD sounds... All sounds work fine on the Windows side, but nothing I have tried so far seem to work with Ubuntu & I have tried many options from many threads.

I upgraded 9.10 desktop to 10.04 using network (recommended) procedure. The window close button has moved (all desktop windows) from upper right corner to upper left corner. This causes untold frustration since I flip amongst numerous computers with Windows windows and other levels of UBUNTU windows. is there some way to configure where the window close button is (some way to put it back in the upper right corner)?

I was wondering if it's possible to remove the triangular resize window button from the bottom-right corner of a particular window (or all windows, doesn't matter). I recently made it so that I have a transparent terminal (with no title bar, borders, etc.) docked onto my desktop, but the one thing I can't get rid of is the ugly-looking resize button hanging out by itself in the middle of the screen.

for some reason text shows up every time I move my mouse over a window control button, and about 1/3 of the time the text stays there, frozen until I open up another window and move my mouse over it's window control buttons. Is there a way I can remove this text completely?

KDE tends to freeze momentarily after performing some tasks, like closing a window, pressing a button that should result in an option pane being popped, or simply trying to drag a window around the desktop. It doesn't happen every single time, but it's very persistently. I first noticed that the mouse would freeze sometimes when I do something like close a window and it takes 3~4 seconds for me to get control back, and for the task that I requested (close a window for instance) to be carried out.
During this time, I notice that all of KDE freezes up because my binary clock widget freezes as well. Is this a known problem with KDE? Can somebody give me some advice as to what might be causing this behaviour? I recall having similar problems back when I first tried 11.0, but back then it was so bad that I ended up going with Gnome. Now KDE has me hooked again, except for this one niggling issue. If I can get this resolved, then I think I will finally have an absolutely stable linux desktop.
[Code]....

I've been using this feature since Win3.1 days. Double-click the menu button on the top-left of the window to close it.It doesn't work for me right now in KDE, and I can't find any option to enable it. Googling gave a few hits of people requesting this feature in gnome, but no clear instructions on how to enable it in KDE or whether it's possible. (Though perhaps my Google-fu is just weak...)

I installed all the necessary packages for the networkmanager-openvpn function to function. The openvpn-connection-setting are successfully imported into the networkmanger via the conf file but the apply button is grayed out, so that actually saving and using the connection isn't possible? Does anyone know, where the problem is? It's a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 after the upgrade from 10.04 sent the networkmanger down the drain.

I'm attempting to install lFedora 10 from a live cd. I already finished the installation process. But when I reboot to finish the post installation information I can't click the forward button to continue because the screen resolution is to low on my LCD. I can't see the forward button to click in the lower right hand corner. I found out if I just hit the enter button I got through the "Welcome" and "License Information" part but when I get to the "Create User" part after I Confirm my password the pressing the enter button doesn't work. And of course I can't see the "Forward" button to click. Is there some way to go in text mode?

lenny gives me either system sounds, or other sounds like flash plugin sounds like videos, cd playback etc., but not both. to hear videos i have to disable system sounds. as soon as i tick enable software sound mixing (esd) in system -> preferences -> sound -> sounds, videos goes. a message saying it could not open the resource as something else is using it comes up when trying to play a cd. sounds like a threading problem in some program. what should i do to get sounds to be equitably shared by all?

Headphone plugged in the front and the mixer master channel is set to "headphone". System Settings -> Multimedia is set untouched. And the installation configured (in order):
- HDA Intel (VT1708B Analog)
- PulsAudio Sound Server
- Default
Opening System Settings -> Notifications and playing a sound works fine.
Opening System Settings -> Multimedia and hitting the test button: no sound.
Junk: no sound
Amarok: no sound
Why is it that the notifications work (without pulse) but anything else fails? How can I get it to work?

I'm trying to figure out what in the world is going on with my sound in OpenSuSE. I put in a brand new Audigy chipset soundcard and finally got some sound to come out of the speakers. I used the guide here: SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE. to fix the permissions on my sound and am able to get sound-test to play sounds as well as connect to the sound device in my vmware and play sounds. That being said, I have terrible sound quality coming out. There is a lot of static sound like white noise and the volume of the actual sound played is very low compared to the noise. The sounds also distort somewhat.
I have tried the pulse audio change in the tutorial above also and have been searching around google. The only problem that I saw similar was a person who fixed the problem by updating KDE. I don't have KDE, I'm using Afterstep.

I have two 32-bit boxes here at work on a windows network. Box A I set up a couple months ago with Squeeze. Box B has a fresh install of Squeeze and I want to transfer all my /home and info/setting from Box A to Box B. I have Box B set up with /home on it's own partition. Is this as easy as using rsync over the network? Or would scp be better?

I know Xubuntu is a "quiet" OS, but I don't even get a login sound and I have checked the box in Login Screen settings. I'm using 10.04 final. Are there no system sounds in this version? There doesn't seem to be a way to specify your own chosen sound by pointing to a directory.

At the moment i'm dual booting Mint9/Fedora 13 (both gnome). Although sound works fine in both, i've noticed i get no system sounds in Fedora, other than at log in. I've done all the usual checks in sound & pulse audio, everything is unmuted etc etc, seems to be set up fine. There's even more sound options than Mint in usr/share/sounds/freedesktop/stereo.

For some reason I cannot play sounds anymore. It worked fine, but it just stopped working and I have no idea why. Might have been an update, but I'm not sure. I really have no idea what to do, restarting certainly didn't do anything. I use Fedora 14 with KDE 4.5.5. In the system settings I can chose "Internal Audio" as Hardware with a couple of different Profiles, of which none work.
