Fedora Installation :: Install Still Attempts Window Boot

Sep 26, 2009

I'm having an issue installing Fedora 11 on my system. After the install, I remove the DVD media, reboot the system, and it reports an error stating that Windows cannot start, missing or corrupted hal.dll file. I appologize if this is a common problem or has already been answered. My searches haven't yielded helpful information, mostly what I've found is people attempting to setup dual-boot machines or boot Fedora via the Windows Boot Loader.I have experience in computers, although I am completely new to Linux/Fedora. Through my work, I have experience using AIX, but no experience installing or managing drive partitions. The system in question is a 5 year old Windows XP system that I built myself. The system has two drives (C: and D: in Windows). The C: drive was the Windows install drive and the D: drive was added later for additional storage. I am attempting to completely overwrite Windows on this machine. I want it to single boot into Fedora 11, I am not looking for a dual-boot system. The system will become a network file server.

The specs of the system are...
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3500+
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-K8NSNXP-939
RAM: 2GB

I downloaded the DVD iso for Fedora 11 x86_64 via Bit Torrent, burned the ISO to DVD and booted the system from DVD. I ran through the install (Anaconda 11.5.0.59) and see the following information on the screens..

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 On Macbook Pro - Now Takes 4 Attempts To Boot And Beeps On Restart

Apr 29, 2011

I've tried to install 11.04 on my Macbook Pro (5,4) today. I had two drives in the machine, an SSD as my main drive, and an HD. I installed rEFIt before attempting to install Ubuntu. I moved my Snow Leopard install to the secondary HD & made sure I could boot to it. Then, I used the live CD & gparted to clear the 1st drive (the SSD), create the swap space, create the Ubuntu partition, and launch the install, where I used what I had just created on the SSD. The install completed okay (but with no option to select where the GRUB installer went, like some tutorials tell you to look out for). This seemed to go okay, so I went to restart at the end of the install, but the machine didn't come back up.

Instead, the power came on & I could hear the drives, but the screen stayed black, the battery light flashed a load of times really quickly (too quickly to count, but at least 10 times), and then the machine let out 1 long beep and stayed on the black screen. I forced it to power down & tried again, and just got a black screen, the battery light shining steadily, and no beep. I forced it to power down again, and got the same, then again, and got the same, and then a 4th time, which actually allowed me to boot. And this has been the pattern since then. I shut down, and my first attempt to restart gets me the flashing light and the beep, with the black screen. I try 3 more times to power down and restart, and just get the black screen. Then, *every* time on the 4th time, I'm allowed to boot.

The same routine will be gone through the next time I power down and try to restart. I've tried totally clearing the disk in gparted, restoring the OSX install from TimeMachine, everything I could think of, but all to no avail. Finally, thinking that maybe the OSX install I had safe on the secondary HD might still be okay (looking at it in gparted showed an EFI boot section & everything), I opened up my MBP, swapped the drives around so that the HD is now the main drive, and the SSD the secondary, and renamed the drives so that the primary HD is now called 'Macintosh HD' and is first in the list of drives that appear when I manage to boot each 4th attempt. But, to my great disappointment, I still got exactly the same error. Can anyone offer any advice on how to:

1) Get my machine booting to a safe Snow Leopard install on the (now primary) HD?
2) Safely install Ubuntu on the (now secondary) SSD?

Obviously the first is a top priority, as I need my machine in order to work! Then I can concentrate on moving my dev environment to Ubuntu, which I've been dying to do for ages.

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot Loader Get Wiped If Did A Fresh Install Of Window 7 To The Drive?

May 23, 2010

I want to properly install Unbuntu on my multi boot pc. I would like to install to E partition which is currently ntfs. I have never installed Linux. What drive should the boot loader go? I can format E partition during install? Does it still need a swap file partition? If so, can that be made from E partition? How big? I'd like to have a boot menu to choose Ubuntu or a choice that takes me to the windows boot loader. Would that boot loader get wiped if I did a fresh install of 7 to the I drive? Also, what would be the proper way to upgrade Ubuntu? I see a lot of post where people are doing it wrong.

Here is my drives layout. Should install Ubuntu to my SSD J drive instead? I tried the live CD. Seems to work well. I have a Asus Max Formula MB, Phenom II 6core, ATI 4870. MB has a built in Via sound card. Not sure if that was working.

Installation :: Unable To Boot Window XP After Installing Fedora / Solution For This?

Sep 25, 2009

My hard disk is a 40 gb seagate drive with 3 logical partitions - C (Win 98), D (Data), E (Win XP Home). Yesterday, I decided to format Win 98 partition and install Fedora 11 on it. I used Live USB, custom partitioned for /, /boot and swap. Installation went fine until the Add/Delete boot screen came when I got multiple Unable to mount partition errors. Then I added Win XP (which was on sda6) and restarted the system. When the system booted, I selected Win XP but it didn't do anything. It showed blank screen and then reverted to grub boot loader screen. Then I selected Fedora time and completed installation and it works fine but XP doesn't boot.

Thinking something might have gone wrong, today I reinstalled Fedora. I chose "Install over previous Linux" and this time the installation went smoothly without any errors. However it still doesn't let me boot into Win XP. It gives a "Booting into WinXP in 3/2/1 seconds" and then goes blank and keeps repeating that message.

This is the result of fdisk -l code...

Ubuntu :: Boot Attempts Reset Computer?

This comes paired with a bad boot into my windows partition so I feel like they may be related. I did a system repair and now windows works though. I'm defraging my harddrive now just to see if it works.

Ubuntu :: 20 Failed Attempts (literally) To Install Or Fix?

Mar 13, 2010

I have tried and tried to get Ubuntu up and running again after a fatal crash. Unknown reason. I have burned several copies of Karmic and Jaunty, but the only one that will come up is an old copy of Jaunty Live CD. Chksum have matched on the disks and the disk integrity (the last time came up with 1 error, but it did not say where. I have used SystemRescue64, Rescue-remix for Karmic, MHDD, Ultimate boot disk, and have reformated and partitioned my 640GB drive. One partition is formated to EXT3 and the other is unallocated. Both testdisk and memtest show positive. No disk will complete a permanent install. At least one error shuts it down even after fixing broken packages and sometimes there are 3or 4 errors msgs. Last night the error was something in Open Office, I don't recall more than that. Here are the errors I picked out of todays logfiles. They are prety much in order as posted in the various logs:

Ubuntu :: Clean Install After Several Attempts At Upgrading From Karmic Failed?

May 30, 2010

I installed Lucid (clean install after several attempts at upgrading from Karmic failed), and I have an Intel 8xx video card. I was able to get Lucid installed by adding "xforcevesa" into the command line at startup. Now I would like to try changing my computer away from Vesa and seeing if I can try to get the i915 driver working.

That being said, I cannot figure out where to go to change my kernel boot configurations. Every tutorial I've found refers me to /boot/grub/menu.lst which I cannot find. Ever since I moved from Karmic to Lucid, I've regretted it as it seems like all the How-To documentation is no longer valid, everything has been changed and moved around.

I don't know why it is dumping me onto Vesa, or why my stupid driver was blacklisted; everything was working fine under Hardy, Jaunty, and Karmic. Why problems now? Does anyone know how I can get into my boot setings and replace "xforcevesa" with something that will make the intel driver work?

Red Hat / Fedora :: Logging Connection Attempts With Iptables

Mar 8, 2010

I'm having a lot of problems getting NIS set up with our firewall. I've looked online and no one seems to have any answers. When the firewall is off, NIS works. When it's on, it doesn't.I would like to know which ports NIS needs by logging connection attempts on the server, since I would swear the right ports seem open already. Right now I'm using this to generate the log entries:

iptables -I INPUT -m state --state NEW -j LOG --log-prefix "New Connection: "
iptables -I OUTPUT -m state --state NEW -j LOG --log-prefix "New Connection: "

However, I think it must only work for successful connections, because I'm not seeing any new entries when I try running the NIS client on another machine (ypbind).
