I am trying to install Fedora 12 on my laptop. But every time it loads the screen rez is way off and I cant see the bottom of any window. And its in 4 wierd sections. I have trying usb and cd on both Ub. and Fe. My laptop is an HP DV6629wn NVIDIA GeForce 7150M / nForce 630M

I was messing with the color for the panels and some how every time I minimize a window the tab never shows on the bottom or the top panel, you know to reopen it. It just disappears and then I have to reopen the program.

I suspect that it may have to do with my ati radeon 9800 graphics card. give me some boot options or some such thing so that I could install fedora on my computer. Also some other specs

So about an hour ago I put my computer on standby. For whatever reason I couldn't bring it back so I restarted it. It works fine except now Ubuntu has pushed my display down. This means that the bottom of my tool-bar on the bottom of the screen is cut off, and there's a black bar on the top. I'm using a T.V. screen so there is no way I can manually adjust it. I also plugged my desktop back into an old monitor and it was off-center downward too.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have installed Scientific Linux 4.8 (based on RedHat Enterprise 4) on my old Samsung X10 laptop which previously had a working WinXP on it. Due to a broken screen connector I cannot use my laptop screen so I use a separate monitor connected via a serial link.
The linux install seemed to work fine except now when I boot up I eventually get a screen completely covered with flashing artefacts and I cannot see any desktop like environment. Although in the initial stages of the boot-up I do see white text on a black background zipping by.
I actually saw similar screen artefacts at the beginning of the installation when I chose the 'graphical install mode' (I re-started the install in 'text mode' to see it working).
I will be very pleased if someone can help me fix this as I have been wanting to get into linux for ages and this is my first plunge.
I booted up to Fedora today (kernel 2.6.29.5-191.fc11.x86_64) and found that after logging in, my cursor was in the bottom right hand part of the monitor. When I moved the mouse the cursor moved in the right direction but then immediately returned to the bottom right of the screen. When I click the mouse I get the options I would expect to have if the mouse was in the corner and the keyboard also works fine. So right now I can't do anything that requires a mouse since the cursor doesn't like leaving the corner of the screen. I can't even get the updates installed (hoping they might resolve they issue somehow) since I can't click anything.
The only thing that I did before this happened was installed a whole mess of updates and installed nvidia drivers.
Is there any command /utility in linux that would Take screen shot of non focused window or minimized Window?

For example if you take a look at Oracle Enterprise Linux 6 they have a loading screen that makes an "O" on start up. Note: I am not talking about GRUB, I already know how to change the grub boot screen. If so can someone provide the steps needed to modify the OS loading screen.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI might get harassed for making this windows/linux comparison, but i'm seriously wondering why i cant find any application that can display a quick little notification on the bottom right hand corner of my screen whenever there's some intrusion attempt.
For example, sometimes I can see that in my /etc/logs/secure (or something like that) there's someone who's trying to attempt to connect to me using random usernames/passwords from different servers. The only time I know this has happened is when i actually open the file with gedit. Is there anything like (norton for windows) that can display little notifications (with or without eye candy)??
Anyway, I installed Ubuntu normally. Whenever I try to run Firefox for the first time, it loads for a bit, then it crashes. Every time. I tried reinstalling it, and the isntallation was fine. I managed to connect properly. But it won't run.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI turned on my computer today and logged in only to find discover that both toolbars on the top and bottom of my screen have disappeared.This is problematic as it has become impossible for me to connect to the internet without the wireless toolbar at the top of the screen, and as well I no longer have the ability to select different windows without alt+tabbing. I didn't modify my system in any way to the best of my knowledge, nor was I messing around with my desktop config. Luckily I can still access my applications (including the Terminal) by right clicking, but it's still a less than ideal setup.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm rather new to linux, and I have a dedi server. I know how to browse, install, remove etc, all the basics needed to use it. I've installed flvtool2, memcoder and ffmpeg, and at the moment im converting avi files in to flv. Im then passing metadata using yamdi.
However, this process is very timely as im converting loads of avi files at a time.Im looking for a script, or a way where I can execute one command/script and which will convert all files in the directory I specify, then run those converted files through yamdi.Im guessing it would be some sort of loop, and then changing for each file?
I was looking for a duplicate file-finder that will allow me to delete the duplicate files directly from the program. After seeing several recommendations in this forum I installed Fslint from the repositories. It easily found the duplicate files that I needed to remove. The problem is, if I select a duplicate file and if I click on Delete at the bottom of the Fslint window, nothing happens. The duplicate files that I selected are not deleted.
I thought there might be something wrong with the repository version, so I downloaded the latest version of Fslint (v. 2.40-1), and I have the exact same problem. Fslint will not delete any files. Maybe Fslint is being interfered with by some other program. I am using Ubuntu 9.04.

When I press the quit or logoff buttons on the desktop it takes me to the logon screen and then at the bottom right corner it allows me to shutdown or reboot. View 5 Replies View RelatedI performed a clean install of Fedora 15 from DVD and it goes fine until the end when the install program says to reboot the computer. Once I do that, the computer hangs before Grub loads, i.e. just after all of the BIOS messages, so there isn't any error message to indicate what is wrong. I had no issues with Fedora 14.

The mouse cursor shows up, I can move it around, and then it goes black again, and the mouse cursor shows up again. This repeats a few times until the cursor freezes. I have tried some of the options in recovery mode from GRUB menu, none really work, except booting with default graphic configuration, or something similar like this.
After entering runlevel 2 and gdm loads, I only get a black screen. I hear a beep that indicates gdm has loaded, but everything stays black. Trying to switch to a console using ctrl-alt-f1 does absolutely nothing.
At one point, I disabled gdm from starting in runlevel 2, and rebooted. I then typed into tty2 "sleep 60 ; reboot" and in tty1 "gdm" and hoped for a reboot if the graphical login didn't appear. No reboot occurred, my black screen remained.
I've issued acpi=off at kernel command line (from grub) and disabled all acpi services. That seemed to work for a few hours but now I get the black screen again every time. There's no option in the BIOS to switch from acpi to apm, so I've done all I can do on the software side of things.

I have a bad problem with debian 5.0 . I have installed it all right with no fail or error and when it boots,i just see a black screen with nothing else. My graphic card : Nvidia 9500M gs. I tried ubuntu,fodero but both of them were same after installing debian (Before i didn't have this problem)
