Installation :: Unable To Boot Window XP After Installing Fedora / Solution For This?

Sep 25, 2009

My hard disk is a 40 gb seagate drive with 3 logical partitions - C (Win 98), D (Data), E (Win XP Home). Yesterday, I decided to format Win 98 partition and install Fedora 11 on it. I used Live USB, custom partitioned for /, /boot and swap. Installation went fine until the Add/Delete boot screen came when I got multiple Unable to mount partition errors. Then I added Win XP (which was on sda6) and restarted the system. When the system booted, I selected Win XP but it didn't do anything. It showed blank screen and then reverted to grub boot loader screen. Then I selected Fedora time and completed installation and it works fine but XP doesn't boot.

Thinking something might have gone wrong, today I reinstalled Fedora. I chose "Install over previous Linux" and this time the installation went smoothly without any errors. However it still doesn't let me boot into Win XP. It gives a "Booting into WinXP in 3/2/1 seconds" and then goes blank and keeps repeating that message.

This is the result of fdisk -l code...

Fedora :: No Monitor Input During Boot, Unable To Enter Text Mode From X Window

Nov 24, 2009

I installed Fedora 11 on my system (see below) using the i686 DVD. The graphical install worked just fine, and after the system booted back up, the X server was working very well.

There is no boot text. On the other system with Fedora 11, I can see the boot text scroll by in the window and/or a progress bar at the bottom of the monitor during the boot sequence. On this system, the monitor says "No Input", and nothing appears until the login prompt for the X window. I am able to enter the BIOS configuration page and navigate through it without any issues. I can also edit the grub commands before Fedora loads without a problem.

If I boot in text mode, no login prompt appears. If I wait long enough, the monitor enters the power save mode since it is not receiving a signal. I am able to log in to the system with my user name and password, and then start the X server. Once the server starts, the monitor turns back ON and all is well.

From the X window, I use the CTL+ALT+F2 key to enter text mode. The monitor stops responding. If I press the ENTER key a couple of times, then press ALT+F7, I can briefly see the text window with a couple of login prompts before the X window starts responding again.

How can I get the text mode to work? Why is there no input to the monitor when booting?

System:
Intel D945GSEJT motherboard with Intel Atom N270 processor
2GB RAM
120GB SATA Hard Drive
Fedora 11 i686

Fedora :: GRUB Error After Installing F12 / Solution For This?

Jan 2, 2010

I currently have two hard drives. One of them is a dedicated Windows 7 x64 500gb drive. The other, is a 152gb drive that I plan to install Fedora in. When I booted from the live CD, I chose the option to use the entire 152gb disk and to boot from the 152gb disk. I'm not sure if I did something wrong there, but now, GRUB won't detect Windows 7 or Fedora 12.

I would also like to leave the Windows 7 hdd untouched.

I previously had a non-working OpenSUSE installation on the 152gb drive

Fedora Installation :: Install Still Attempts Window Boot

Sep 26, 2009

I'm having an issue installing Fedora 11 on my system. After the install, I remove the DVD media, reboot the system, and it reports an error stating that Windows cannot start, missing or corrupted hal.dll file. I appologize if this is a common problem or has already been answered. My searches haven't yielded helpful information, mostly what I've found is people attempting to setup dual-boot machines or boot Fedora via the Windows Boot Loader.I have experience in computers, although I am completely new to Linux/Fedora. Through my work, I have experience using AIX, but no experience installing or managing drive partitions. The system in question is a 5 year old Windows XP system that I built myself. The system has two drives (C: and D: in Windows). The C: drive was the Windows install drive and the D: drive was added later for additional storage. I am attempting to completely overwrite Windows on this machine. I want it to single boot into Fedora 11, I am not looking for a dual-boot system. The system will become a network file server.

The specs of the system are...
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3500+
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-K8NSNXP-939
RAM: 2GB

I downloaded the DVD iso for Fedora 11 x86_64 via Bit Torrent, burned the ISO to DVD and booted the system from DVD. I ran through the install (Anaconda 11.5.0.59) and see the following information on the screens..

Fedora :: Boot Hangs After Anacron / Solution For This?

Aug 16, 2009

In F10 the boot sequence hangs just after loading anacron. I booted with interactive mode and after saying 'yes' to starting anacron I'm prompted to start 'local'. When I say yes, my system hangs.

I've seen quite a few posts regarding very similar issues that people were having. None of them seem to have a clear cut solution.

Some posts mentioned about the wrong video drivers, however I've been using the same video drivers for a couple of months now and never experienced this problem.

I looked at /etc/rc.local and all it has in it is 'touch /var/lock/sybsys/local'

I also looked at the file above and there is nothing in it.

Any ideas/solutions? Everything was working just fine the other day. so I'm completely baffled.

Fedora Installation :: Installing XEN With 11 - Unable To Open Connection To Hypervisor URI 'xen:///'

Jun 19, 2009

I have been only using the free vmware server thus far for my virtualization I have recently installed Fedora 11 and am currently looking at using the XEN virtualization software. I am currently running and upgrade from F10 to Fedora 11 with the PAE kernel. Also I am using KDE 4 with kmod-nivida drivers. Now here is what I have done

To install Virtualization requirements I did the following: sudo yum groupinstall 'Virtualization'

I then also did: sudo yum install kvm qemu libvirt python-virtinst

I then installed xen:
sudo yum install xen*

Now, I read that i needed "kernel-xen" but it doesn't appear to exists a "yum list kernel*' only displays kernel packages and the kernel PAE pakages so I figured I don't need it I then started all the xen services and libvirtd service Opened virt-manager and added a new connection: hupervisor: Xen and connection: local

I get the following error: Unable to open connection to hypervisor URI 'xen:///': <class 'libvirt.libvirtError'> unable to connect to 'localhost:8000': Connection refused
None

I guess my question now is... what is the difference between the hypervisor: QEMU/KVM and XEN. Because I seem to be able to create a VM using this. My VM is an XP vm for work purposes to run some windows only software I would like to use XEN as I just have my mind set on it but I might just be ignorant and on the wrong track is there a how to guide for fedora 11 and xen? the fedora 7 guide i found needs the kernel-xen installed.

General :: Unable To Boot Into Windows Vista Installation And Only Boot Fedora

Jan 28, 2010

Having a major issue with my laptop. I am unable to boot into my Vista installation.I am currently posting this through my Fedora 11 installation which I had already. If anyone is interested, the BSOD error is:

0x0000007B (0x80399BB0, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

As far as I know, a '7B' BSOD is usually a hard disk error but I am 100% sure the HDD is fine as I can read and write from both Fedora and Knoppix without issue. Steps taken so far: Obviously, I have tried the usual steps of trying to start windows in safe mode, last good config, and all of the F8 options. When they failed, I used fedora to check for some solutions online (Mostly useless answers from MS) and I found one successful case when a person flashed his BIOS back to an earlier time. Unfortunately, I cant get the BIOS update I got from the Dell website to boot from a USB drive (Says invalid boot disc - the BIOS on it is in the .exe format which I can't use in linux) and I do not have a floppy drive on the laptop.

So, I put in my Dell drivers and utilities CD hoping that it would give me some option to update (Or roll back) the BIOS but there was no such option. However, it did give me a load of diagnostic options including repair options by symptom so went with the "Unable to boot from BIOS". Unfortunately, that didnt help me at all. So, I got my Vista installation disc (OEM supplied) and managed to get to the repair menu (Which I had among my F8 options anyway) but this also has the option to reinstall. Unfortunately, it states that "Upgrade is unavailable" and that a clean install is the only thing I can select (At the expense of my files and settings).

As for the repair options, the automatic recovery doesn't seem to find any errors, asks to reset and see if all is well (It isn't). For some reason, system restore doesn't detect any restore points. There are no windows memory errors detected and I have no backups. So, i'm left with a command prompt that, by default, is asking for a file in this folder: X:/WINDOWS/System32/ I have no idea where it is getting the X: drive from - I have C and D drives for windows only. As per another online guide, I tried:

Having searched this and other forums and googled without valid results, I need some help. Realtek PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller Series v2.26 (090219)

The cable failure is consistent with there being no cable and inability to configure wireless during install. I used the custom partitioning option during install and was very careful to search for any fields I might have missed initially.

Fedora Installation :: Cant Boot Into Windows Xp After Installing 15?

Aug 6, 2011

I'm not able to boot into windows XP after having upgraded to Fedora 15 (from a linux magazine DVD). I just get a perennial flashing cursor with black screen. I have tried leaving it like this for a few minutes to see if anything is happening in the background, but to no avail. There were no issues at all with Fedora 14.The grub.conf file appears to have been modified only to pre-pend the fedora 15 boot option. I have changed nothing else in grub.conf or (windows for that matter). All the Fedora boot options work correctly.I have update everything using yum update.Having read a few posts I am still none the wiser. I append the grub.conf and the output of "fdisk -l". What is Fedora 15 version of grub doing differently, and what has it modified that disables the windows part of the bootloader?

Fedora Installation :: F10 Won't Boot After Installing ATI Drivers / Resolve This?

Jan 16, 2009

I'm new to these forums. I'm coming from using Ubuntu for a couple of years and now I'm trying to switch to Fedora.

I installed F10 yesterday and all went well, more or less. The system used to freeze randomly but after updating, everything seemed to work fine (I haven't tried audio yet, though).

I have an X1250 integrated graphics system that's working fine in Ubuntu. After playing around with F10 for a while I decided to download and install the latest ATI drivers from AMD's site. The installation posed no problems, but when I reboot the system it will come to a black screen at some point and freeze there.

I searched the web a little and came to this: http://www.fedorafaq.org/#radeon, but I'm not sure if that's current or old news. If it's current and those ATI drivers can't be installed, I'd appreciate some help about removing them.

Fedora :: Installing JWM Window Manager

Mar 17, 2010

I wanted to try the JWM window manager, which is not in the Fedora repository. The author's site gives no instructions, save for users of Irix (!), so after compiling and installing I needed to find how to have it on offer at log-in. I do not want to just have jwm launched after startx runs; I want the (Gnome) log-in where I can choose a desktop or window manager for the session.

I found that Icewm and Gnome have desktop-configuration files in /usr/share/xsessions, so I created one there for JWM using the other two as a model. What I can't find is where Gnome's session manager keeps the list of available sessions. I've searched the contents of /etc/X11/xinit/ and the configuration files in my home directory for a file containing "icewm" (which I do have available), and drawn a blank.

Fedora Installation :: Getting CRC Errors When Trying To Run Updates / Solution For This?

Apr 18, 2009

I just installed Fedora 9 for the first time and have been unable to run updates nor am I able to use the add/remove programs feature. With the system updates the error I receive is within the /urs/share/packages area. I posted this http://amahi.pastebin.com/m131ea1d2 I also receive a different error when I run the Add/Remove programs feature and I receive a similar error. I also tried running these commands from root while logged in as root -- yum clean meatadata
yum -y update but this had no change to the system. I also thought it may have been a RPMFusion issue so I looked at their FAQ and ran the command line to enable RPMFusion and it advises that this package is already installed. I am getting confused by this and not sure where to start so that I dont keep going over the same things with and getting the same results.

Fedora Installation :: Upgrade F9 - F10 - Unable To Boot ?

Jan 22, 2009

It's become a tradition since I've installed FC6 on my machine: after each Fedora upgrade, the PC hangs at reboot because of a badly make initrd !

I found this post a while ago that helped me to solve the problem by rebuilding the initrd with the right librairies in it: [url]

So for each upgrade I've done the last 2 years I had to follow again these instructions to rebuild the initrd.

I've just finished the upgrade from F9 to F10 and I faced the following friendly message:

Code:

Allright, not a surprise in fact. While rebuilding the initrd I discovered there's no more /lib/i686/nosegneg/ directory in Fedora10's initrd. Therefore I reinstalled the libm-2.9.so library as follows:

Code:

Once the initrd rebuilt, I rebooted and faced a second friendly message:

Code:

I searched for posts reporting problems with segfault in ld-2.9.so but didn't find anything. So now I'm with a successfully upgraded fedora 10 system that refuses to boot.

By the way, I've done the upgrade using the netinstall CD, all the packages have been retreived online without errors and I think I've therefore the latest versions.

How to making this F10 box to start ?
