Hardware :: Intel G41 (ICH7 With VIA VT1708B) - Mixer Does Not Work

Feb 14, 2010

I have several computers based on ECS G41T-M motherboard, featuring ICH7 chipset with VIA VT1708B 8-ch audio codec. I've installed Debian Lenny 64-bit on it. The sound itself works, but mixer does not, thus, for example, I can not get my recording app working, changing volumes does not work etc. Here what it looks like:

Code:

$ alsamixer
alsamixer: function snd_mixer_load failed: Invalid argument

I've also tried Ubuntu and OpenSuse latest LiveCDs, both 32 and 64 bit - the result is the same alsaconf does not help.I'm totally puzzled and will be gladfull for any hint.

Additional info:

Code:

$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: VT1708B Analog [VT1708B Analog]
Subdevices: 0/1

OpenSUSE :: After Update No Sound Intel ICH7?

Technically it is a Realtek chipset I believe. Worked fine under 11.2. In the old days would just run alsaconf but I'm sure that is passe' by now.

Slackware :: No Sound With HDA Intel On ICH7 Chip - AD198x

Dec 13, 2010

I seem to have problems with sound on a ICH7 chip. the motherboard is an ASUS P5LD2-SE

The kernel is custom, but SND_HDA_* is included. and generally the sound device is identified properly.

Here is some relevant output of aplay -l and -L, lsmod and relevant part of lspci -vv

(what is this 'null' in the very beginning?)

I read this relevant thread: [url]

But my GPU doesn't have an HDMI output (and no sound module either). Note that I did see a similar msg

Quote:

To this one (of course it didn't include any nvidia references) but after running alsaconf, alsamixer, alsactl store once the msg vanished.

This thread didn't help either [url] as I'm running slackware64 13.1 on this pc and there are no newer alsa* package versions for me to install than the ones I already have.

Fedora Hardware :: Intel ICH7 Alsamixer Won't Remember Volume Levels

Apr 15, 2011

I ran openSUSE way back since version 7.3, before that I was on Redhat 6 and briefly at 5 before that. I know my way around Linux pretty well but two problems with Fedora are bothering me right now. I'll begin a separate thread for each one to keep things clear. The first problem is with sound. I remember having problems with the Intel ICH7 chipset and pulseaudio on openSUSE, but the problem I have with Fedora is different. Sound works, but each time after rebooting, I have to open alsamixer to turn the master volume up from zero. Being an openSUSE user, I am comfortable with KDE, so I am running KDE 4.6.1 as my DE.Two sound devices have been detected, one is the Intel soundcard, which is recognized as snd_hda_intel. The primary sound device, according to alsa, is my Logitech UVC cam.

Debian Multimedia :: Audio Crackling On High Volumes With ALSA On Intel ICH7

Aug 23, 2015

I'm having some issues with audio crackling/buzzing when turning up the volume, or on songs that have overclipped / overdriven parts, which doesn't happen on Windows (on it those sections are just "dampened"). Is there some certain settings in ALSA that are used to deal with this? Or is it something specific to the driver for the hardware? Speaking of which I'm using some integrated audio which goes by the name of Intel ICH7, and the chip itself is Analog Devices AD1981B.

I'm only using ALSA, without PulseAudio, and I've made sure the volumes both in the media players and under alsamixer aren't turned too high (PCM is at 47% and "Headphones" -- what is "Master" on Windows and on other soundcards under Linux -- is on 22%), so it isn't an issue with the software mixer being turned up too high. Also I'm using a pair of quality headphones (Sony MDRV55) so it's not an issue with the analog audio output either. I've also tried multiple other headphones and the result is the same.

Ubuntu :: Mixer Won't Work With U9.10 / Enable This?

Jan 4, 2010

Long story short... I have sifted through endless docs.. some that I understood and some that I didn't, I have posted in these forums twice (not one response) and asked my local LUG for ideas and I got nothing.

I have an audio mixer that I am desperate to get working with Ubuntu 9.10, and despite working fine with Vista (so I know it's not my hardware or Mic's etc.) I can't achieve this to save my life.

At this point, I would like to just go with what works and stick with Vista, but like a fool it was me who suggested to some long distance collaborators that we all try to use Ubuntu. Now I am the only one not working...

I am frustrated to no end here. But I figure I will ask one more time and pray that someone can help me here.

How can I get Ubuntu to accept my mixer as input for audio recording??

I should also state that I am having no other audio issues that I am aware of, and that the cheap, sounds like crap mic that is built into my monitor DOES work with Ubuntu. I need to change away from this mic as the input source and over to my mixer which is connected to my sound card.

Sorry to repeat myself here but I wish to stress that this configuration of mics into mixer into computer is something I have been doing for years on the mac and with windows so I know the problem here lies with Ubuntu. And like I say, I am dual booting now on an HP desktop with Vista and I have success with Vista.

Ubuntu :: Gnome ALSA Mixer - Sound Doesn't Work

Mar 20, 2011

I am experiencing problems with the Gnome ALSA Mixer. I installed Ubuntu on my MacBook Pro inside Windows (I am running Windows via bootcamp), and when I am running Ubuntu the sound doesn't work. After researching the problem online, I was told that one needed to download an application called the "Gnome ALSA Mixer", and switch the mute to off (apparently the mute is default). I downloaded the application, but whenever I try to run it the application window is blank. There are no controls of any sort. I was told when installing Ubuntu inside windows that the disk efficiency (I think thats what is was) is very much reduced, but I don't know if this has anything to do with that.

Also, is there a way to prevent the trackpad from registering stimulus while typing? I find it very obnoxious that every time I try to type in my password or the like that the curser clicks off of where I'm typing, so I am constantly having to move the pointer back and re-click in the area I'm trying to type in (if that makes sense).

Ubuntu :: Couldn't Get Tvtime To Work Because /dev/mixer Is No Longer Created In 10.10 So No Volume Control From Within Tvtime

Oct 5, 2010

I migrated back from Maverick because I couldn't get Tvtime to work because /dev/mixer is no longer created in 10.10 so no volume control from within tvtime. I'm now back to 10.04. The issue that I'm having is that I have 4 devices that show up as /dev/mixer, /dev/mixer1,/dev/mixer2 and /dev/mixer3. I need to have tvtime use the mixer associated with my soundblaster audigy card.

whenever I reboot, the order of these devices changes. Sometimes the soundblaster is assoaciated with /dev/mixer , sometimes it's /dev/mixer2 etc. Is there a way to ensure that the devices are always in the same place/order? On a related note, sometimes my usb webcam is video1 other times it's video0 , this also causes problems with tvtime. How can I ensure that my system is the same after each boot? I tried dev rules but couldn't get them to work properly.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: No Audio For ICH7 Sound Card On 11.2

Jul 18, 2011

This is a Dell Optiplex 380 desktop with an ICH7 family 82801G sound card. If I install openSUSE 11.3 or HIGHER, the OS will properly auto-configure the card and the sound is fine. However, 11.3 or higher also has an issue playing back full-screen flash video as well as 11.2 (may be a 64-bit related issue?). I suspect that the problem lies somewhere in the fact that this PC was produced considerably after the release of oS 11.2 so it's not detecting the card right.

I have gone so far as to enable a repo newer than the SUSE version to attempt to upgrade the ALSA components. I guess what I can do is throw in a live CD for 11.3 or 4 and go into YaST or 50-sound.conf and try to see what's going on or just copy it to a flash drive. I have a feeling that might get me farther than jerking around with this any longer.

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Hdparm Misbehaves With ICH7 SATA Drives?

Note that setting most of the parameters fails - and it still appears to be in 16 bit PIO mode. Am I using the wrong tool here - or incorrect parameters - or are the results misleading? Is there some other interpretation?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Hda Intel Alc883 Does Not Work?

Apr 10, 2010

The problem is when I restart system I get that error message in notification. What I have to do to get sound work is: I go to Yast->Hardware->Sound then I edit my sound card which is intel 82801G. Then I enter auto in model section. Then next, it prompts that sound card has to be restarted. I click yes then next once again and after all of that it prompts me 3 or 2 times that kde wants to remove usused devices hda intel alc883 analog and/or digital. Then I have to start Kmix and sound works. Now after that what can I do to actually make it work w/o that procedure. Also what I noted, system doesn't want to reboot sometimes so I have to shutdown -r now.

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Get New Intel 6200 To Work

Mar 2, 2011

I just replaced my Broadcom 4312 card with an Intel Centrino 6200-N card. The install went fine (dmesg | grep iwl shows that it's physically installed) and the result of "rfkill list" is:

0: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no

I downloaded the most recent drivers from Intel for the 6200 and extracted the tar. I opened the .deb file: linux-headers-2.6.33-02063304-generic_2.6.33-02063304_i386.deb and it started a Package Installer. In that process an error occurred "Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: linux-headers-2.6.33-02063304." I've searched but could not find a fix for this error. I am using 10.4 and obviously my wireless is not working (but Wicd wireless is enabled).

Ubuntu :: Does SSD Trim Work On Non Intel Controllers?

Mar 5, 2011

In windows the only controllers that really work with TRIM is the onboard Intel ones, Jmicron, Marvell, Nvidia and AMD's don't pass the command to the drives if you use their own drivers. (And from what Ive read, the Micron sata6 controllers don't work with TRIM even using the default Microsoft drivers). In Linux do more then just Intel drives work with TRIM? I have a Nvidia 790i Ultra motherboard, the SATA controller is an Nvidia one which has 2 settings, ATA and Raid (if the drives aren't added to an array it runs them in AHCI) and has an additional Jmicron sata port.

If I enabled TRIM in the OS, would it work on either of those controllers? Also if anyone knows this, in Windows if you set an Intel controller to raid, you wont get TRIM on SSD's that are on the controller (but not in an array) with the default Microsoft driver like you would if it was set to AHCI, you only get it with the Intel RST drivers. Would a SSD on an Intel controller set to raid but not in an array get the TRIM command passed to it in Ubuntu?

Fedora Networking :: WIFI On Intel Pro 3945ABG Won't Work?

Aug 18, 2010

I have some serious trouble getting the Wireless connection working, using Fedora 13 on a Dell XPS M1710 laptop which has an Intel Pro Wireless 3945 ABG adapter. I have previously tried an earlier version of Fedora I think it was version 10, where it worked flawlessly out of the box, but all versions since then, simply wont work properly. I got the Fedora 12 64 bit working at some stage, after using hours and hours trying to get it working, and suddenly it did. Don't know what suddenly made it work, since I haven't made any new changes, just re-checked the old ones. But I needed to use Skype which is only in 32 bit, so I had to reinstall to a 32 bit version, and then couldn't get it working again.

I can get it to work with any Windows version, no problems. I have also tried with PCBSD version 7.x, 8.0 and today I tried the new 8.1 just to see if that worked to, an no problemos, it works perfectly out of the box, I could set it up in 5 minutes, even though I don't have any previous knowledge of PCBSD, other than a few short trial installs.

It has to be said that I am a newbee to any Unix/Linux, so I don't know how to troubleshoot properly, and have only tried a few things which I have picked up from other forums. But unfortunately nothing seems to work. The first thing I did after a clean install was I looked in the Fedora 13 documentation, that says I should check that the NetworkManager is controling the interface, I tried to start up NetworkManager but nothing happens, no reaction what so ever. I tried rebooting and then restarting NetworkManager, but no matter what I try, I won't work, not even if I am using the root account.

I noticed right after the install, that there was a choice of connecting to a hidden network in the lower right corner of the screen, but while I have been trying to get the NetworkManager to work, it has suddenly disappeared (I have disabled SSID broadcast on my Linksys router. I've tried to run lsmod and it seems like the right firmware is running, I think it was called IWL3945 or something like that. I think there were around 3 such modules running, plus a Dell module.

Another important note, before I even touched the the WIFI, I connected to the Internet via my normal fixed LAN connection, and installed all the updates that were available and rebooted the system. I am using an LinkSys WAG354G V2 ADSL router, where I have disabled SSID broadcast. Is there a kind soul out there, who has a good idea of what the problem is, or a good idea of how to troubleshoot it ? since a laptop without a WIFI connection is not of much use to me.

Hardware :: Two Graphics Cards (Intel 965 / Cirrus 5440) Does Not Work

Jun 12, 2011

I want to add a second monitor to a computer with existing onboard Intel 965 graphics. The Intel graphics work great so i'd prefer adding something old for a second monitor (just to throw some toolbars on it) instead of installing ATI / nV card (which will disable the Intel graphics). I added an old PCI (not PCIe) Cirrus Logic GD 5440 Alpine for the second monitor (so that it won't disable the Intel). This card is capable of 640x480 w/ 256 colors (actually more, but I don't know how much more it will go. It has like 1MiB memory)

Now I set it up like this:
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-cirrus.conf
Code:

Identifier "CirrusCard"
Driver "cirrus"
BusID "PCI:4:0:0"
