Ubuntu :: Does SSD Trim Work On Non Intel Controllers?
Mar 5, 2011
In windows the only controllers that really work with TRIM is the onboard Intel ones, Jmicron, Marvell, Nvidia and AMD's don't pass the command to the drives if you use their own drivers. (And from what Ive read, the Micron sata6 controllers don't work with TRIM even using the default Microsoft drivers). In Linux do more then just Intel drives work with TRIM? I have a Nvidia 790i Ultra motherboard, the SATA controller is an Nvidia one which has 2 settings, ATA and Raid (if the drives aren't added to an array it runs them in AHCI) and has an additional Jmicron sata port.
If I enabled TRIM in the OS, would it work on either of those controllers? Also if anyone knows this, in Windows if you set an Intel controller to raid, you wont get TRIM on SSD's that are on the controller (but not in an array) with the default Microsoft driver like you would if it was set to AHCI, you only get it with the Intel RST drivers. Would a SSD on an Intel controller set to raid but not in an array get the TRIM command passed to it in Ubuntu?
I have downloaded and compiled the xboxdriver from Grumbels git hub. Running 9.10 minimal with xbmc 9.11. I can run the driver manually and actually run multiple instances of the driver for multiple controllers. I cannot however get more than one instance of the driver to start up at boot. I have the freshly compiled driver and daemon that came with source files in /usr/local/bin.
I can run the driver via 'sudo /usr/local/bin/xboxdrv --wid0', I can even get a second wireless controller working with 'sudo /usr/local/bin/xboxdrv --wid1'
When I add the driver to /etc/rc.local it runs fine on startup. The problem is I want more than one instance running. When I add the exact same line right under it except change the wid0 to wid1 it will not automaticly run the second driver. I also can get zero activity from the daemon. I have tried adding it to the rc.local, or /etc/init.d/local (I think someone mentioned it somewhere) with no luck.
I am not quite sure what I am doing wrong. My ultimate goal is to have 2 minimum to 4 maximum controllers work from startup. I want to add emulators to a xbmc htpc and just dont want to have to worry about manually starting drivers. I have forgone using xpad due to its somewhat limited support for wireless xbox360 controllers.
Ok, Im likely to buy SSD 128gb drive and install Fedora 14 on it...but I have a question. If I go with ext4 will I get TRIM to work out of the box? Whats the status of kernel support on trim?
How can i set the order of controllers which Debian loads? One of my problems is that it is initializing my PCI-e controllers first and my OS drive is being named /dev/sde. Also is it possible to list which port of which controller a HDD is plugged into?
Code: :~# lspci 00:00.0 Host bridge: ATI Technologies Inc RX780/RX790 Chipset Host Bridge 00:04.0 PCI bridge: ATI Technologies Inc RD790 PCI to PCI bridge (PCI express gpp port A) 00:06.0 PCI bridge: ATI Technologies Inc RD790 PCI to PCI bridge (PCI express gpp port C) 00:0a.0 PCI bridge: ATI Technologies Inc RD790 PCI to PCI bridge (PCI express gpp port F) 00:11.0 SATA controller: ATI Technologies Inc SB700/SB800 SATA Controller [AHCI mode]
I would like to buy PCI to SATA II controller for my machine. I'd like to use them on Debian Lenny stable (2.6.26-2 kernel). So I'm choosing between noname (Logilink ?) card with Sil3124 chip and HighPoint 1720 card. Functionality basically is the same for both cards or at least it is enough for my needs. I will run mdadm anyway. So the question is should I really pay 3 times more for HighPoint ? Is there any reason for that or Sil3124 will do the same ? What about compatibility ? As I know both cards are supported on thet kernel.
How do I configure samba such that AD authentication still works when a DC is down? Do I need multiple kdc, admin_server, and kpasswd_server entries in krb5.conf?
I am trying to configure grub to be able to boot from any of the four hard-drives that I have, three of which are plugged into an nVidia RAID controller and the other is plugged into a JMicron controller. Grub seems to only see the loan one and not the other three. Is there a way to get Grub to see the disks attached to another controller?
I just replaced my Broadcom 4312 card with an Intel Centrino 6200-N card. The install went fine (dmesg | grep iwl shows that it's physically installed) and the result of "rfkill list" is:
0: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no
I downloaded the most recent drivers from Intel for the 6200 and extracted the tar. I opened the .deb file: linux-headers-2.6.33-02063304-generic_2.6.33-02063304_i386.deb and it started a Package Installer. In that process an error occurred "Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: linux-headers-2.6.33-02063304." I've searched but could not find a fix for this error. I am using 10.4 and obviously my wireless is not working (but Wicd wireless is enabled).
My problem is similar to this one [URL] and I've already tried some of the steps, to no final resolution. The OS in question: Ubuntu 11.04 64 bitProblem hardware: Intel Ethernet 82567V-2 network card[URL]I've already installed the latest driver using the README instructions (sudo make install, etc). The network card will connect ONLY to my Linksys router but not even to my Motorola cable modem, even when it's directly connected to the modem ! I cannot get any web pages at all outside of my LAN, only my Linksys configuration page on my router. As I said above, I've already tried most of the steps in that forum post above. I'm going back to retrace my steps to see what else I can do
I have an old sony vaio laptop, and it has an intel 82801cam ethernet device and it refuses to work when I plug it in to an ethernet adapter. Im thinking it is a driver issues but whenever I list my hardware devices in terminal with lshw it seems to see that device despite that
I know Compiz works on my mobile 915 intel graphics (I have been using it until now with Desktop cube) but now I have external monitor hooked up extended to laptop monitor and I lost compiz - no longer works. How can I fix this?
I was running it portable on a 4gb usb drive via virtual box which worked great unless I used a computer that had virtualbox on it. The portable version would remove files that the original version needed. I decided to try Qemu. The problem is that the portable version only allows 1gb of space to install regardless the size of a usb drive. so the question is: Is there was a way to trim ubuntu 9.10 down to less than 1gb of disk space? If not is there another portable emulator that could be used instead? the only uses for this are for the use of evolution and opera in a linux environment.
I'm going to do a fresh instalation, I have an Intel Core 2 Quad, so I'm tring to get the 64-version from [url]but the file says "amd64", will this work for me?
I am currently running Lucid 10.04 Ubuntu through Wubi and am having MAJOR problems with my webcam. I can use this webcam on windows vista without a problem and very nice picture quality, but when I try and use it on Ubuntu I run into some snags. The webcam is connected and works, kind of, on "cheese", but when I run a test on skype it is just a black box.I have found some code through the forums that allows me to run skype via terminal and will let my webcam work as well as it will on Cheese. Now, when it does run the picture is very blue and dark as well as extremely laggy compared to when ran on Windows Vista.
I have an OCZ Vertex SSD...the 30GB variety. recently I upgraded my kernel to 2.6.33. I have read that that is all that is needed in order for trim to just start working. Is there a way that I can verify that TRIM is working?I'm debating getting the Vertex2 100GB model because I love my SSD now, but would love to have a little more storage space. I just don't want to buy it without TRIM working.
I followed this tutorial [URL] to enable my TRIM support and now my fstab looks like this:
Quote:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information. # # Use 'blkid -o value -s UUID' to print the universally unique identifier # for a device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name # devices that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).
[Code].....
but when I follow the second half of the tutorial http://lightrush.ndoytchev.com/rando...bledandworking to check and make sure it's working I don't get all zeros like I'm supposed. I tried waiting a while like I saw in another tutorial as well and check it again.. Still random numbers and no zeros.
The problem is when I restart system I get that error message in notification. What I have to do to get sound work is: I go to Yast->Hardware->Sound then I edit my sound card which is intel 82801G. Then I enter auto in model section. Then next, it prompts that sound card has to be restarted. I click yes then next once again and after all of that it prompts me 3 or 2 times that kde wants to remove usused devices hda intel alc883 analog and/or digital. Then I have to start Kmix and sound works. Now after that what can I do to actually make it work w/o that procedure. Also what I noted, system doesn't want to reboot sometimes so I have to shutdown -r now.
Ok this is not a question but more or less a small tutorial to help those who have had just as much trouble or more in getting the intel driver + DRI working.
trying to get ALSA running on a mainboard with onboard Intel soundchip using the snd-hda-intel driver. aplay detects no devices and amixer says: "Mixer attach default error: No such file or directory". Tried everything from the ALSA troubleshooting manual but no success... why is the card not recognized? Here is the output of a debug script I found. Up to now I just did "configure;make;make install" with alsa-utils, alsa-lib and alsa-driver...

I've downloaded the Ubuntu Server 64AMD version. Will this work with an Intel Xeon processor? I've an old SuperMicro 1U Server X5DPR-8G2+ Xeon Dual 2.8GHz/1GB I'd like to use. Will Ubuntu Server work with this or do I need the 32bit version?
I have made a custom kernel a few weeks ago, and just today the sound on everything isn't working. Upgraded alsa to 1.0.24 to try to fix and nothing... What do I need to do?
