View 2 RepliesI have a strange problem with my audio on Linux. Some months ago I bought a new laptop (an Asus M51Vseries (M/B version M51Vr)), and now I want to install Linux on it. However, there are some problems. When I first booted up my newly installed Linux distro, Debian Lenny (kernel 2.6.26-1-686), I had sound when I tried to play movies, mp3s, etc. However, after next boot, the sound had disappeared. Nothing came out of the speakers even though everything had worked before. Nothing had changed in the mixers as far as I can tell, either. So I googled a lot and came about pages telling me I should edit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base and passing on a model option. Unfortunately it didn't work. I then put off the project a while, and yesterday I tried installing Linux again. Magically, sound worked again, and after rebooting, it had gone. I am at my wit's end.
When I think about it, I find it strange that sound that HAD worked, should stop working, and then start working again by passing a model=... (I tried several) in alsa-base.According to alsamixer (and yes, all channels are at the highest volume level, NOT muted), the chip is a Realtek ALC663. The Alsa version is 1.0.16.I hope you are able to help me. I really want to get rid of Windows, but I won't accept not having sound.
Wireless networking doesn't seem to work. When I try to create a new network interface with system-config-network, my wireless card doesn't show up. The following comes from dmesg:
ipw2200: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200/2915 Network Driver, 1.2.0kmprq
ipw2200: Copyright(c) 2003-2006 Intel Corporation
ipw2200: Detected Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection

I'm unable to mount any dvd on my HP 6735s laptop running Gentoo (with combined stable (+) and testing (~) ebuilds). NOTE: -aiur-r5 is my custom kernel name. I am having this problem with all the kernels since 2.6.31. I use the vanilla kernels from www.kernel.org and compile them with some custom settings using menuconfig.

I did: USE="dev-lang/php json exif" emerge dev-lang/php
I was installing "wine" last night and since I knew it was going to take a while I closed the lid of the laptop and turned it upside down on the floor. (I always turn the laptop upside down when not using it otherwise might overheat)When I woke up this morning roughly 8 hours after I went to sleep the machine was turned off.Using the "last -x | grep shutdown | head -1" it stated that it went down at roughly 6 hours from when I went to sleep. The program I was installing got finished installing but I never set up an auto-shutdown program or anything of the sort.If this isn't a problem with linux then its a problem with my bios. If its a problem with my bios I will just have to live with it because my bios is locked. /var/log/messages says this:

I am building gentoo through a fully installed Ubuntu system. My swap partition is in use by the Ubuntu system so when I use the mkswap command I get that the partition is already in use. I expected this but I was wondering if postponing the mount of swap until after I have booted into the gentoo system would cause any problems. Am I going to have to edit a bunch of files if I mount my swap later?? Also, I didn't see any manuals mentioning building a gentoo system from a fully installed system, is that going to cause any problems? This is my first gentoo installation, so I'm not really experienced with gentoo. I didn't think that building from a full install would be any different than a live cd other than more resources are already in use. I'm not actually having problems with install. I just want to make sure I wont.

Is there a way to turn it off using the Open Firmware or, if this isn't possible, could a script do this ?
I installed git and gitosis as described here in this guide Here are the steps I took:
Server: Gentoo
Client: MAC OS X
1) git install emerge dev-util/git
2) gitosis install
cd ~/src
git clone git://eagain.net/gitosis.git
cd gitosis
python setup.py install

I'm trying to install Gentoo on a virtual machine (VirtualBox installed on my debian squeeze).
My connexion at home is veeery slow, so I wanted to do it at work (don't judge me!), the thing is I' behinf a proxy.
I tried the command
Code:
export http_proxy="proxy:port"
but couldn't ping anything. On the other hand, when i use
Code:
links www.google.com -http-proxy host:port
that works...
So i was able to download the stage3 file and start preparing the system, but I have some troubles when it comes to use the provided tools (the tool to add a mirror can't retrieve the list for example, and I guess I could not emerge anything either)

I upgraded to -current last night hoping to improve my Intel 845G graphics controllers functioning in X, I've had to use the vesa driver for stability. The upgrade was completed but KDE seems as slow as ever. Here's some snippets from Xorg.0.log:

Release Date: 2010-02-16
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0
Build Operating System: Slackware 13.1 Slackware Linux Project
Current Operating System: Linux speedy 2.6.33-smp #2 SMP Sat Feb 27 20:12:16 CST 2010 i686

It seems I'm still using the vesa driver, any ideas on why the intel isn't being used and how to fix it?
I am facing a serious problem.. i want a linux-device driver to work on windows is it possible.. see windows has device driver files as .sys and linux has .ko so is it possible..??
