When I restart, GRUB sometimes doesn't start. It just hangs at the flashing cursor before grub.
When I restart again, grub works fine. The flashing cursor shows at the top of the screen for a few seconds, and then there is one or more new lines, and then the grub screen.
This is on an HP Pavilion 640 which is otherwise very stable.
Using Ubuntu 10.4 32-bits, Windows 7 32-bits (sda) and Windows 7 64-bits (sdb). Grub displays 2 menu-entries Windows 7, but both entries start Windows 32-bits (sda).
"sudo update -grub" doesn help.
sudo fdisk -ul gives:Schijf /dev/sda: 640.1 GB, 640135028736 bytes

Windows 7 and Kubuntu 10.04 on separate HD partitions. I have three partitions: /boot, /root and swap .
I donno why but after several boots somehow GRUB gets corrupted or something so that when i restart the laptop, it displays "Grub 2 loading..." and restarts again. This seems to go on in an infinite loop, restarting the machine again and again trying to load grub.
When I re-install grub, everything is fine (I am able to see the Grub menu of ubuntu and windows and able to boot into both) .
I am using a Dell vostro 1320 .
If I use the super grub disk I can get to my ubuntu partition otherwise my windows partition boots automatically. I spent over an hour in the community documentation using the live cd to reinstall grub and nothing has fixed it. I think that grub is installed and the windows bootloader is just taking precedence.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have ubuntu 10.10 running on my HP dv5 pavilion laptop So today i tried to reinstall grub on my pc .. i removed grub-pc and grub-common using synaptic then booted up with a live cd of ubuntu 10.04 i then mounted sda11 to mnt using sudo mount /dev/sda11 /mnt sda11 being my ubuntu directory containing the /boot then i installed grub to it using sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda it reported as installation finished.No error reported then i unmounted /mnt and checked for /boot/grub/grub.cfg seems like the file is missing so are the files in /etc/grub.d/ reinstall my grub back
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install my laptop in a triple-boot configuration with Fedora 10, Windows XP and Windows 7 beta. I did already installed them in that order. This is how it is layed out on the harddisk:
Now i want to use grub to present a menu at boot so i can select an OS. Because I installed XP last it boots straight into XP. I've understood i should be able to do the following:
All goes well until the last step (grub-install). It gives an error stating that /dev/sda doesn't exist, which is correct; It doesn't. I do have the "device" listed outside of the chrooted environment.
My question is: How do I get /dev/sda available in my chrooted environment?
While trying to upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04, I consistently get the error:
Failed to fetch http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/...e_1.34_all.deb Hash Sum mismatch
I've tried on multiple computers and on virtual box, in all cases using alt-f2 typing 'update-manager -d' and following the instructions from there. I've also tried downloading the link separately but get the same error.
Any ideas? Should I just install it from scratch?
I'm trying to perform a clean installation of 8.0.0-i386 from a CD. Seven consecutive attempts all result in the same issue: Almost immediately after commiting the disk partitioning settings (i.e., to begin formatting), the computer does a hard restart. I have tried doing the partitioning as early as possible in the installation process, just in case the system is running out of memory; I have also tried using the lowmem option. I suspect the problem may be related to my very old hardware...

No POST errors, the HDD passed verification using the Adaptec ROM utility, all unnecessary hardware removed
Could it be that I need an older release or some custom-compiled kernel? The only thing I could come up with on the web was that a lot of people have a similar failure with modern distros on non-PAE CPUs, but the P-II should not be susceptible to this problem.
After upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 I realized that Firefox doesn't start, it just shows "Firefox starting"on the taskbar for a second and then dissapear. New Gwibber software doesn't start either.I have separate /home partion and installed new version to the system partition marked it to be formatted first. Opera browser works perfectly fine.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm new to the world of dual booting Ubuntu. My computer is currently running windows 7 64-bit, and I'm trying to install Ubuntu 32-bit to run beside it. So I've created a boot disk, and I try to install Ubuntu. The weird thing is when I get to the frame that says "Prepare disk space" it correctly shows that I have windows 7 on the computer, but it shows it's on the wrong drive. In fact within the Ubuntu installer it doesn't even show the physical drive that windows is on, it only find the other two drives. If I load up System > Administration > Disk Utility then I can see all 3 physical hard drives and all the partitions on them, but not under the Ubuntu installer.
So I tried installing Ubuntu onto one of the other physical hard drives and that seemed to go just fine. The only problem is now when I boot, the only way I can swap operating systems is to go into my BIOS and change the boot order of my hard drives. If the hard drive with Windows is higher in the boot priority, it will boot windows, no problem. If the hard drive with Ubuntu on it is higher, then it takes me to grub, where it correctly shows windows 7 and ubuntu. Only problem is when I choose windows 7 all I get is a blinking cursor and nothing happens.
If I choose Ubunutu it boots correctly and everything works. So in a way I do kind of have them both working, but it'd be nice not to have to go into my BIOS just to change operating systems. I'm guessing that grub's problem is that the Ubuntu installer identifies the wrong drive that Windows is installed on, so when I pick Windows from grub it goes to the wrong drive. Can I fix grub manually? Or is there some compatibility issue between Windows 7 64-bit and Ubuntu 32-bit that is causing this conflict?
I've done a clean install of XP Pro on my HP XW8200 (Boot drive is 2x73GB SCSI drives set up as RAID 1)I've run the Ubuntu 10.10 desktop installer and partitioned the drive, installed ubuntu and rebooted when requested.No OS selection screen appears after POST though. Just goes straight into WinXP. The startup options in XP only show XP.Rebooted from the Ub10.10 live cd and checked that the partition is there and the OS files are there.
Any ideas why the grub menu doesnt appear?I'm assuming it's something to do with Ubuntu not seeing the RAID drive but it did install ok..
I installed it from a cd and it wouldn't work. (froze in the process). I then tried to install it through windows wubi and that didn't work (wouldnt boot) since I was unaware it was a known issue and thought it was me doing something wrong I uninstalled it,reformatted the hard drive and tried to install via a cd again this time it fully iinstalled but when I rebooted it tells me unable to mount drives and a shell will be shown.
in the end I have no files on ubuntu so I would like to clean up all reminance of the previous installs and be able to use a working install. since I have been installing and reistalling for the better part of 8 hours.Yexcuse the post sloppiness using my phone)
All this started when I decided to upgrade Ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04. Now Windows XP gives me a blank screen and doesnt run. I have tried a bunch of things but didnt help. I also clean installed Ubuntu 9.10 into a new partition and removed the deleted the other partition.

1. Windows XP on sda1 wont start from grub2 (version 1.97-beta4).
2. I can access the windows partition from Linux and see all the files.
3. When I boot using windows cd, and go to recovery mode it doesnt list Windows XP.
4. From windows Recovery mode when I try "diskpart" it says no partitions in c drive.
After upgrading Ubuntu to version 11, vmware-server-console stopped working - only gray window opens. After killing the process error message appears:

Just upgraded to 9.10 on a laptop with dead Vista which I lost when I moved over to UBUNTU some time ago. Never any problems but when fiddling at boot up tonight I accidentally selected to boot up the Vista loader which went into the Vista recovery, and since then the laptop only opens up the Vista Recovery, ie it does not go to the Grub. Any ideas on how I can get to boot UBUNTU again?

Only, when I select WinXP in GRUB, nothing happens. Oh the screen goes dark for a few seconds, but then the GRUB screen reappears. Ubuntu 10.04 functions correctly.

What I need to know is how to make GRUB load WinXP.
I have been successfully triple-booting Windoze and 2 varieties of Linux on my desktop for some years now with very few problems. The latest configuration which I have been using for 6 months or so is Kubuntu 10.04 & Ubuntu 10.04. The last version installed was Kubuntu 10.04 and on installation it's version of grub found Ubuntu 10.04 no problem (other than a minor problem with partition numbering which was manually fixed) and all was well.
I have just upgraded Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 (by clean install rather than version upgrade) and the new grub from Ubuntu 10.10 will not start the existing Kubuntu 10.04, I just get "error: file not found".The grub.cfg file from Ubuntu 10.10 is completely different (copy attached) but the partition references & numbers etc. are correct so why will the existing Kubuntu 10.04 not start ? Windoze starts OK.

I just installed Fedora 12 on my HP laptop. And everthing has gone smooth, and I decided to reboot my machine. And it rebooted and the Fedora Loading logo camep and after it finished, it went to a black screen with a "|" just flashing and it's stuck on that
View 8 Replies View RelatedI loaded Kubuntu 9.1 and got a mess in the Grub 2 Boot Menu, which I can't correct.
I get extra choices in the Boot menu, and the first few, which are supposedly for Kubuntu Karmic Koala all put me in a shell, which ends in a black screen, then shows up a shell once I hit "enter". Then I just have a "intramfs" (?) prompt.
So I went into Grub2 to change it, and it refuses to do it. All I get is a screen full of error messages every time I try, with no change. Apparently it is looking to access drive sdb8, which is non-existent. I DO have a drive sda8, though.
So with all the wonderfulness of the indirect system to change Grub 2 how am I supposed to set it right? The old Grub worked fine, and just took simple changes to the menu.lst file.
Can't somebody write a program that lets Grub 2 be changed from within the program, rather than all this running around trying to find what file to change, and how to get the change to work?
Just to be clear, here are the errors as they show up when grub-update is flailing around:

i have Vista 64Bits Ultimate installed on an 1TB hard disk whit 3 partitons I have a 2nd 160GB HD in my system which i installed Ubuntu 10.4 on. All went ok, except after the installation finished and the system rebooted it booted straight into windows, whitout ever displaying GRUB. Now i found a way to boot either system, by using the bios and setting the applicable HD to 1st device. (or something similar)
Any way on how to solve this? keeping to have to enter the BIOS to select the HD and Thus OS i want to boot aint very practical. (im currently using ubuntu BTW)

i have a 250gb hdd and a 160 hdd. i installed wind0ws 7 on the 250 and then ubuntu 10.10 on the 160. In the past (8.04-10.04) after install ubuntu on boot grub would give me the option to go into ubuntu or windows, now ti doesnt give me that option and boots directly into ubuntu. I dont even think it has recognized that windows is there.

I read that installing Windows after installing Ubuntu wipes out Grub, so I made sure to install Windows first. Unfortunately, after completing the Ubuntu install and rebooting, I see no sign of the Grub menu. I followed several sets of instructions for reinstalling Grub, and after running grub-update, it appears that Windows 7 was added to Grub, and after examining the grub.cfg file, it appeared that that was the case. Despite appearing to be installed perfectly once inside Ubuntu, Grub doesn't show anything at startup. No matter what I try, I can't seem to make Grub appear, and now I can't get back to Windows 7. Am I missing something, or should I try a different bootloader?

So I reinstalled windows, and rebuilt grub. Now when I try to launch windows from the grub menu it says "error: no such device: 0a82ff1982ff0849". How do I go about fixing that? I can boot to Ubuntu fine now.

After that I had try to intall windows xp but when go to load kernal prompt a message could not load a setupdd.sys. I had try to install Linux mint after the starting screen says ready and then nothing , i had try to install fedora only running the cd without even a message only a black screen. At last i had install ubuntu to another pc and i took the hard disk and plug it to this one, when i power on the pc after bios info in the screen come this "grub rescue>"
View 3 Replies View RelatedBefore: I had 2 os's ubuntu and windows installed on my system. Recently, I decided to install ubuntu to a flash drive. All went well except grub was not installed to the flash drive, but appended the existing grub setup on my hard drive.
Now: Even if I set the default system in grub as windows, or the original ubuntu install, my system will not boot unless the usb stick is plugged in. I get message. Error: grub rescue: My ideal solution: To stop grub searching for my flashdrive before loading the boot menu, and if possible to write grub to the flash stick.
I just downloaded the F11 x64 DVD iso, and I when I try to install it, after the media check screen, Anaconda starts it load, but it says "X failed to start, falling back to text mode" (or something like that).
The install goes through (in text mode), and all that gets installed is the basic environment.
My specs:
- AMD X2 Phenom II 550 Callisto
- 4gb DDR2 800 memory
- 1tb Samsung SATA / 100gb Western Digital SATA
- 2x XFX Geforce 9600gt 1gb
- ASRock K10N780SLIX3-WIFI motherboard
I've tried Ubuntu x86 on the same system, but I was having issues with it, so I decided to try FC11 instead.
