I am having trouble getting a dual boot setup on Ubuntu remix on a netbook. The install went fine, but then windows would not book. I had a windows error. So I reinstalled windows, and rebuilt grub. Now when I try to launch windows from the grub menu it says "error: no such device: 0a82ff1982ff0849". How do I go about fixing that? I can boot to Ubuntu fine now.
View 2 RepliesI have two partitions on my HDD. A Windows XP (hd0,2) and an Ubuntu 9.10 (hd0,1).I have been using the Windows mainly and ran a program that changes the HDD's serial number. Now when I boot up and Grub loads, I try to access the Windows partition and get the following error:

I am still able to boot the Ubuntu partition but can not seem to get grub to point to the Windows partition any more. This is very frustrating as I really need to get back into that partition soon.
I had a working dual boot Ubuntu 10 and Windows 7. Anyways long story short, I got it working again but have lost the boot option for windows 7. If i run fdisk -l, I get the following.

I installed gparted and can see that windows 7 is installed in dev/sda6. In another forum, i read that someone had to edit their menu.lst so i did with the following.

When i try to boot from windows 7, i get the following error. Error 12: invalid device request. How can i get my laptop to boot from windows again?
I updated yesterday and now when I start my laptop it goes in to grub rescue mode. I have booted from a 'live cd' and thought I could repair grub from there. In gparted however the partition with ubuntu (sda1) is seen as unknown file system, in terminal when I list the partition table it shows up as FAT16 type. When I try a grub-install it gives this error message:

I'm using Kubuntu 9.10 with Ubuntu-desktop installed.I've been using kubuntu for sometime now but i dont know much technical things about it. I have two hard discs (160GB SATA and 80GB PATA).I have just installed Windows XP Professional and then reinstalled grub2 from a live CD. Both OS are on 80GB PATA drive.The Grub menu at boot time has "Windows XP Professional" entry in it. View 9 Replies View Relatedyesterday i upgraded Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10. During installation i also upgraded grub to version 2. It said that there were two options that i could choose to boot and i choose both. Installation finished with out a hitch. When i attempted restart my laptop i got this message:

I tried the command help and received a message saying that the help command was not recognized. So i then gave Google a bit of a work out and have tried reinstalling grub and manually coping the grub files all to no avail. The problem i believe stems from how i have Ubuntu installed. I have Ubuntu installed like an application on windows 7 on a separate partition on my hard drive. Looking back on it i'm not to sure why i choose that route, but that is how it is installed.
I just installed Ubuntu on a separate hard drive alongside Vista, and after restarting, my computer booted to a screen that said, "error: no such device: xxxxx-xxxx-xxxxx-xxxx (I don't remember exact number, if I need them I'll go back and write em down) grub rescue>"
After a bit of searching I found this thread: [URL].. I tried the first part twice which didn't change anything, so I tried the last part which was too fix the vista bootloader, which worked perfectly, and now I can get into at least one operating system. Would anyone please help me get a bootloader working so I can choose between Ubuntu and Vista? Also, is it worth mentioning that right before the computer shut down after installation, I had a huge list of I/O errors?
EDIT: After further searching I read that the I/O errors were commonly because of a faulty cd or it was spinning too fast. I think my problem with that was that it was spinning too fast, it was incredible loud and there was a huge amount of wind coming out of my computer XD. iirc I have to go to the BIOS to change disc speed?
EDIT2: I think all my problems stem from a faulty CD. I remember setting the burning speed too the highest setting when I burnt the live CD, I guess I thought faster was better.
I just (for the first time ever) installed a version of Ubuntu. It is 10.04. I installed off of the Live Disk. I was having a great time until the first time I went to boot into it and I got the message

I'm new to the world of dual booting Ubuntu. My computer is currently running windows 7 64-bit, and I'm trying to install Ubuntu 32-bit to run beside it. So I've created a boot disk, and I try to install Ubuntu. The weird thing is when I get to the frame that says "Prepare disk space" it correctly shows that I have windows 7 on the computer, but it shows it's on the wrong drive. In fact within the Ubuntu installer it doesn't even show the physical drive that windows is on, it only find the other two drives. If I load up System > Administration > Disk Utility then I can see all 3 physical hard drives and all the partitions on them, but not under the Ubuntu installer.
So I tried installing Ubuntu onto one of the other physical hard drives and that seemed to go just fine. The only problem is now when I boot, the only way I can swap operating systems is to go into my BIOS and change the boot order of my hard drives. If the hard drive with Windows is higher in the boot priority, it will boot windows, no problem. If the hard drive with Ubuntu on it is higher, then it takes me to grub, where it correctly shows windows 7 and ubuntu. Only problem is when I choose windows 7 all I get is a blinking cursor and nothing happens.
If I choose Ubunutu it boots correctly and everything works. So in a way I do kind of have them both working, but it'd be nice not to have to go into my BIOS just to change operating systems. I'm guessing that grub's problem is that the Ubuntu installer identifies the wrong drive that Windows is installed on, so when I pick Windows from grub it goes to the wrong drive. Can I fix grub manually? Or is there some compatibility issue between Windows 7 64-bit and Ubuntu 32-bit that is causing this conflict?

I had Ubuntu installed, i installed Debian and there was no dual boot. So i formated all the hard disk to install only Debian. It installed but at boot i get error: no such device and the grub rescue> prompt. i googled for a solution and nothing worked:
- i tryed reinstalling grub, not worked
- i did the windows cd fixmbr trick, not worked
- reinstalled debian with fixmbr the first step and nothing
- tryed deleting with dd the mbr, not worked

I already had windows 7 installed on my raid. So I figured that I would install Ubuntu on my 250gb external. I burn it, boot to CD, and tell it to wipe and install the external hdd. After installation it prompts me to take out the CD, then press enter for it to restart. It restarts, gets all the way through and then says:

I'm trying to install ubuntu from a CD. I believe it is version 8.4 The install seemed to go fine and I rebooted my computer and immediatly after start up I get a message that says: Grub Loading stage 1.5.

I'm currently setting up a dell server with hardware raid 1 on sas 6r. i got 4 sas installed on the server and configured to raid 1 as stated below,
array 1:
slot 0 & 1
array 2:
slot 2 & 3
during the installation, the installer detect the array 2 as sda and array 1 as sdb.. so i proceed with installation on array 2. after completed the installation, the first reboot lead me to a 'grub-rescue" prompt. by following the guide at url Mode, i've noticed that the boot folder has changed to (hd1,1), which i believe it has changed to sdb1. default root device shows that prefix=(hd0,1)/grub.

I have a single harddisk partitioned with Ubuntu Maverick and Windows 7 installations. I installed Windows first and then Ubuntu, after resizing partitions and adding a new one for Ubuntu. Win7 did not appear in the Grub2 boot menu. I added it (sda3), but on rebooting, I get the message "BOOTMGR is missing/Press Ctrl+Alt_Del to restart".
I understand that Win7 might have put its boot manager in another partition, and sda1 had FAT. I am new to Linux. I have installed RHEL 5.4 on my PC with preloaded Windows XP.
Windows was set as the first boot kernel. So if i do not choose which OS to be loaded it will load Windows by Default.
Today I got an error saying GRub Loading Stage2 read error.
I was having ubuntu 9.10 on my desktop installed as "WUBI"(installed inside windows). Very recently(yesterday) i had some package upgrades showing up. I installed the upgrades, among them one was called "GRUB PC". I though it was a normal gurb update. what i see is the my windows boot loader also has been corrupted and GRUB cant access my UBUNTU also. The error which i get is this

I was dual-booting Ubuntu 11.04 just fine for about the last week but then ran into some issues and decided to reinstall Ubuntu. Now after the install I get this error: error: nu such device: d38af2a9-740e-4d3c-b267-2a3848e5d319 and it goes into the grub rescue command prompt screen. I have tried to reinstall Ubuntu about 6 times now, complete installs. I have tried changing boot priority multiple times. I installed off a thumb drive and left the thumb drive in after install, took it out after install.

I want to be able to re-add my Windows 7 to the GRUB, without erasing either of my operating systems. I have seen people that changed the menu.lst file, but got the BOOTMGR not found error. Will I get this problem? My computer came with one drive split in two partitions, WIN7 and DATA. I took 150GB out of the DATA partition to make a new one called Linux. So, how would I put Windows 7 in GRUB, but not erase eithr operating system, and will I get the BOOTMGR not found error?

The solution was to add i915.modeset=1 to the options when booting up from CD.Now I need to do the same in order to boot up from HD. I've opened /etc/default/grub and changed the relevant line to include the above option. But I need to run "update-grub" and it comes back with an error to the effect that it 'can't find a device for / (is /dev mounted?)Also, the boot menu only has ubuntu - no sign of windows in my intended dual-boot. What can I do?

I am running a Windows 7/Karmic Koala Dualie. I was running Windows 7 first, Shrank Windows, partitioned the drive using the 40 free unallocated gigs of the 300 gig hard drive, and installed a fresh install of Karmic Koala to that. This has been working just fine (minus a few graphic driver issues) for the last week or so. Then wanting all my content to be available to both system and my network easily I decided to shrink the Windows 7 side, and use the 90 now free gigs to create a FAT32 Partition (using Partition Wizard after I had defragged the disk) The process runs fine, I boot back into Ubuntu where I have made my Windows 7 drive NTFS partition mount automatically, and I pull my videos and music to the new partition. At this point everything is going great till I fill the partition, and I decide to boot back into Windows to decide if I need to shrink windows to make the new partition any bigger. Everything was fine until I updated and ticked 2 boxes for updating grub and restarted and couldn't boot into anything. I have xp on 80gb 2.6 celeron, and Ubuntu loaded through wubi on 320 gb external hard drive.

I have a dual boot system with ubuntu 9.10 x64 and Windows 7. Everything has been working fine for a a long time but yesterday I tried to delete an unused partition through the Disk Utility in ubuntu (System->Adminstration->Disk Utility) and everything was messed up. I used to get the "Grub error: Unknown filesystem". I managed to create an ubuntu bootable usb and followed some tutorials for fixing grub but all i managed to do is to get another error: "Grub error: No such disc". After some experimentation i got

I downloaded wubi to install it on my old desktop which runs windows xp pro. The installation went through and it asked for some updates. After the updates, it rebooted but got stuck to the msg in the topic sentence. I don't have no live cd's for ubuntu and tried to read some earlier threads but they don't make any sense to me as I have no previous knowledge of linux. how to deal with this in a simpler language?

If I use the super grub disk I can get to my ubuntu partition otherwise my windows partition boots automatically. I spent over an hour in the community documentation using the live cd to reinstall grub and nothing has fixed it. I think that grub is installed and the windows bootloader is just taking precedence.
