Ubuntu :: GRUB Doesn't Start Computer Keeps Restarting
May 29, 2010
Windows 7 and Kubuntu 10.04 on separate HD partitions. I have three partitions: /boot, /root and swap .
I donno why but after several boots somehow GRUB gets corrupted or something so that when i restart the laptop, it displays "Grub 2 loading..." and restarts again. This seems to go on in an infinite loop, restarting the machine again and again trying to load grub.
When I re-install grub, everything is fine (I am able to see the Grub menu of ubuntu and windows and able to boot into both) .
I am using a Dell vostro 1320 .

I have Win XP SP2 installed on my machine. I wanted to try Ubuntu and i created a CD an and wanted to install the OS. The CD booted and i selected the option of "using The OS together and selecting which one to boot" or something similar to that. Ubuntu and changed MBR and installed itself. However on restarting I am getting Error 18. Now i am unable to use my computer at all.
In recover my XP at the moment and how to install Linux so that it does not mess around with any other OS?

I just added a 3rd hard drive, but now when I boot my computer grub doesn't load at all, it just boots to Windows. I've tried holding down Shift, and I've tried holding down ESC but it didn't work. I believe I have grub2.

I did a clean installation of Ubuntu 10.04 and I found that after the computer booted, the GRUB stopped by waiting for entering command -- "grub >". The GRUB version is 1.98. I want to go directly to the GRUB boot menu after computer booted.

My wifes computor crashed during an update with a message to fill in a report. It would not respond to any key presses. The computor has been running 11.3 since it was realeased without problems other than jerky video. The computor will not boot it asks for the password but does not accept it, Although I can see the Home folder it does not mount. I have tried testdisk but although it sees the partions it cannot acess them.

When I restart, GRUB sometimes doesn't start. It just hangs at the flashing cursor before grub.
When I restart again, grub works fine. The flashing cursor shows at the top of the screen for a few seconds, and then there is one or more new lines, and then the grub screen.
This is on an HP Pavilion 640 which is otherwise very stable.

Using Ubuntu 10.4 32-bits, Windows 7 32-bits (sda) and Windows 7 64-bits (sdb). Grub displays 2 menu-entries Windows 7, but both entries start Windows 32-bits (sda).
"sudo update -grub" doesn help.

in Ubuntu 10.04 I have updated my system with command: sudo apt-get dist-upgrade and I see new kernel was installed. Now restart is required. I don't like to restart this computer, because it should be up and running as much time as possible. Is there any way I could only re-run some kind of kernel module or something like that instead of restarting whole computer?

I had Ubuntu installed on my old laptop in dualboot with windows. This year i bought a new Sony Vaio VPCS12M9E preinstalled with windows 7 pro, but i liked the idea of having the opportunity of chosing between windows and ubuntu, so i downloaded ubuntu 10.10 and burned the ISO-image to a disc, and restarted my laptop just as i did when i installed it on my old laptop. The problem is that when i boot the disc after restarting the computer, the screen just turns black. What can i do to install Ubuntu?

I dual boot my ubuntu 10.04 with my windows 7, I had 4 partitions on my machine, 2 ntfs and 2 ext4 partitions. But I noticed I still had an unallocated 10gb on my hdd, I couldn't see this unallocated space from ubuntu, fdisk, gparted etc. So I used diskmgmt in windows to create the 10gb ntfs partition, when I restarted I couldn't boot into either windows or ubuntu. I used my livecd to reinstall grub and everything was fine until I booted into windows 7 and restarted. Again my grub has been messed up.

I am running LMDE with xfce desktop version 4.8.0 and Windows 7 on a sony vaio. Everything works fine except for one minor inconvenience... When I am using xfce and want to reboot to windows, I have to click shutdown, turn the computer off then back on to get to the grub menu. If I click restart, it reboots back into xfce without ever showing the grub menu.

I did a clean install of Ubuntu 11.04 64bit and the start up time is abnormally slow. If I start up the computer and don't press anything, the start up time is 30 minutes but it usually doesn't start up at all. It just boots into a purple screen, no splash, then it sits there and the computer doesn't have any loading lights flashing.
I had a similar problem with 10.10, but I assumed it would go away when I did a clean install of 11.04.
I can't get a read out of what's going wrong because when I press Esc it doesn't display anything, though weirdly it can sometimes get the start up process moving. I have also found that pressing enter really fast can sometimes help and something that seems completely oxymoronic, if I press the power button while it's starting up that can make it work, but nothing works every time.

If I use the super grub disk I can get to my ubuntu partition otherwise my windows partition boots automatically. I spent over an hour in the community documentation using the live cd to reinstall grub and nothing has fixed it. I think that grub is installed and the windows bootloader is just taking precedence.

I'm configuring a new Centos 5.5 server in replacement of an old W2K server. The topology of our network is simple : one file/dhcp/dns relay server and workstations (PC's and some MAC's) plus network printers and scanners. All the workstations have dynamic IP addresses (easier because a lot of 'dynamic' changes : new persons with their own laptop, ...) and the server and printers/scanners have fixed IP addresses.I edited the dhcpd.conf (see here underneath), I have the file dhcpd.leases but it doesn't start !

When I start the computer the boot menu doesn't prompt, when I try to load it manually it doesn't prompt neither, it just reset the command line. The grub.cfg was generated by update-grub.It's really annoying to load the kernel manually each time the computer starts.

I have used CentOS for a while and have never run into this issue. I searched all over and didn't see a similar issue anywhere, I did an install of CentOS as a server (no GUI) with only the base. Partition is /boot ext3, size of 100MB. The rest of the drive is partitioned as / with ext3. This is being done on a CompactFlash card of 32GB in size. The BIOS sees it as an IDE drive.
When the install completes and the system reboots, the grub stops at the grub> prompt. There is no menu for OS options. If I do the following commands:
grub>root (hd0,0)
grub>kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-194.el5 root=LABEL=/
grub>initrd /initrd-2.6.18-194.el5.img
grub>boot

I am trying to install my laptop in a triple-boot configuration with Fedora 10, Windows XP and Windows 7 beta. I did already installed them in that order. This is how it is layed out on the harddisk:
Now i want to use grub to present a menu at boot so i can select an OS. Because I installed XP last it boots straight into XP. I've understood i should be able to do the following:
All goes well until the last step (grub-install). It gives an error stating that /dev/sda doesn't exist, which is correct; It doesn't. I do have the "device" listed outside of the chrooted environment.
My question is: How do I get /dev/sda available in my chrooted environment?

Ubuntu 10.10 doesn't boot at all. The liveCD only boots once every like 30 attempts, installing from liveCD froze, but the Alternate CD worked and installed ubuntu. Now when I try to boot into it using GRUB, it freezes at the beginning of the boot process. With normal boot it freezes at line: Starting AppArmor profiles Skipping profile in /etc/apparmor.d/disable: usr.bin.firefox.With recovery mode it freezes even before showing me anything
A little kinda like the liveCD, if I try like 30 times, it might manage to boot once in normal mode. That line keeps on repeating, the the xxx.xxx integer changes each time, and this goes on forever.I tried removing my floppy drive, but it didn't help.I tried to boot with fd0=noprobeThe one time it booted, when I restarted, it froze while trying to restart.

I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 when it became available. Had it running for a while, was working fine. When I installed the new upgrades a few days ago, it asked me to restart. I did, now I can't start my computer. It turns on, but after the VAIO display, nothing happens.
Had to go buy one of those mini laptops cause they're cheap. It has Windows 7 Starter on it, and You can't even change your background on it.

Sometimes when I shutdown Ubuntu 10.10 and try to turn on the desktop PC it fails. I then have to disconnect tower from the power source and plug it in after waiting a few minutes. This problem first started in Ubuntu 9.10. I have a hunch that it happens because I am shutting down with applications open.
I was told that this is a batter issue on my motherboard, but I've replaced it and still have issues.

I know these forums are not about Windows, but I think I'll get better help here than in one of the Windows forums, let me explain, why:A friend of mine has a computer with Windows 7 on it, now it just doesn't boot anymore. I already changed the boot sequence to CD/DVD, but even with the recovery disc, there is nothing happening at all. Now, since I use Ubuntu 11.04 personally, I thought 'why not try Ubuntu Live'. There's this one second where the purple screen came up (this only happened once), then it's black again and then, 3 minutes later, this is what comes up:
Code:
udevadm settle - timeout of 180 seconds reached, the event queue contains:
/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:01.0/0.0000:01:05.0 (933)

I forgot to run a GUI process on a remote computer. I need to run the application as if I was at the computer i.e the application needs to open on the desktop on the remote computer.
I can connect to the computer through an ssh tunnel via another computer at the remote site and run non GUI based processes using Screen or bring some GUI programs to the computer I'm working from using the ssh -X option, however, this is not what I'm looking to do.
On Windows I used to use a program from sysinterns called PsExec which would let me start applications such as Word on the remote computer and I'm hoping that there is something similar on Linux.
