i have a 250gb hdd and a 160 hdd. i installed wind0ws 7 on the 250 and then ubuntu 10.10 on the 160. In the past (8.04-10.04) after install ubuntu on boot grub would give me the option to go into ubuntu or windows, now ti doesnt give me that option and boots directly into ubuntu. I dont even think it has recognized that windows is there.

I had XP, Debian and F14 installed. Bootloader was the Grub from F14.
I installed F15 from DVD overwriting F14. In the new grub.conf I added:

I'm trying to set up a dual boot of Ubuntu & Windows XP.I have two hard disks installed - sda is 80GB and has an existing Windows setup on it, sdb is my 160GB data storage disk.When I have installed Ubuntu on other machines, it has detected any exisiting OS's and offered to install Ubuntu alongside them.
However, this time Windows doesn't seem to be detected - it says 'no other operating systems found' and wants to install to my second (i.e. sdb) disk. I was intending for Ubuntu & Windows to sit side-by-side on the first hard disk.Although I've installed Ubuntu before, I'm a bit of a novice and I'm not sure how to achieve this - where am I going wrong?
I have a problem that has been vexing me for a week now. I installed Windows XP Media first and then Fedora 12. I did the instalation as simple as I could and let the disk do the work. After installation I rebooted but the windows is not part of the boot up. When I hit the "other" selection a blinking curser shows up and that's it. Now I did goto the Gedit conf. and changed "other" to "Windows" and increased the boot up sec. (hd0,0) is suppose to be for Windows, but no results, (hd2,0) is for Fedora and (hd1,0) is the restore file for Windows. I have tried to see the fdisk, the dev/ directory but don't have a clue how to get there from the terminal.
View 14 Replies View Relatedgot myself a new pc, windows 7 installed.. i just got done installing ubuntu10.10. it said to finnish, i had to reboot.. ok, no problem.. i reboot, loading says uuid is not valid.. but, it loads 7 fine.. they are on the same drive, but different partitions. i only got a wireless usb keyboard and when it goes to the shell, it doesnt seen to recognize it.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am running Ubuntu 10.10. Normally when I boot, I get the choice to run Ubuntu or the Windows loader, where I choose between 7 or XP. I have just noticed that when I boot now, I do not have the choice of going into windows. This has happened on two of my PC's just in the last few days. I assume one of the updates has overwritten the grub configuration file as I still get the grub menu but not the windows option. I have tried sudo update-grub but this did not solve the problem.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently have installed Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Netbook Edition in my personal netbook. The thing is that I had installed Windows 7 in the hard disk drive so I decided to install Ubuntu alongside with it. After the process of installation everything was cool but I hadn't the Grub working. I then pressed the Shift button during the booting process so I got the Grub menu but it didn't show the Windows 7 partition. The Windows installation was not erased because its file system is present in Nautilus. I have tried reinstalling the Grub a thousand times but nothing changes. I have attached the results of the boot info script so you can have some info about my booting configuration.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI got ubuntu 10.04 lucid lynx along with windows (dual boot) and using Grub. On my computer, I have my C:/ (programs) and D:/ (data). I've never used my D:/ before that day that I've lost my windows partition on my grub menu. I usually use my D:/ with windows. The first time I used my D:/ to store data with linux, I lost my windows option in my grub menu. I'm not sure what I did wrong but I do want to restore my windows option in my grub menu.
After "fdisk -l",
I checked in /boot/grub and there is no menu.lst to modify. how I can get back my windows option in my grub menu ?
To start im going to specify as many things as i can think of that may help this process.
1. My laptop came originally with Windows 7 on it.
2. I installed Lubuntu based off Ubuntu 10.10 i'm assuming the slight differences between Ubuntu and Lubuntu shouldn't make this to much trouble.
3. This was installed off of a flash drive.
4. Windows was working fine until the partition of Lubuntu.
5. My old windows files can still be accessed so i'm going to assume windows 7 was not partitioned over or deleted.
6. I'm running off of a Lenovo computer which i believe to have partitioned a section off for some of it's own features never looked into it or touched that partition
7.Currently GRUB gives me four different choices 2 being of Lubuntu connection and 2 being of some memtest thing that i have never seen before.
8. I can't think of how to copy this but when i type in sudo fdisk -l i get partitions from /dev/sda1 through /dev/sda7 every one filled. code...
I have ubuntu 10.10 running on my HP dv5 pavilion laptop So today i tried to reinstall grub on my pc .. i removed grub-pc and grub-common using synaptic then booted up with a live cd of ubuntu 10.04 i then mounted sda11 to mnt using sudo mount /dev/sda11 /mnt sda11 being my ubuntu directory containing the /boot then i installed grub to it using sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda it reported as installation finished.No error reported then i unmounted /mnt and checked for /boot/grub/grub.cfg seems like the file is missing so are the files in /etc/grub.d/ reinstall my grub back

In gparted however the partition with ubuntu (sda1) is seen as unknown file system, in terminal when I list the partition table it shows up as FAT16 type. I have a new netbook - "Eee PC 1005PE-PU27-BK" and installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.04, Kernel Linux 2.6.32-24-generic. I love Ubuntu, but I also want to be able to access Windows 7 if I can. I know that Windows 7 is still on the system, I just can't access it.
I messed up my mbr by deleting my other drive which I guess had the MBR for both my OS (2 Windows 7's). So i installed Ubuntu in an attempt to fix it all hoping to get the GRUB. It then booted directly into Ubuntu.So I ran bootsect.exe tx the mbr and it said success.Still boots into Ubuntu directly without and grub.
I ran sudo update-grub

I am trying to install my laptop in a triple-boot configuration with Fedora 10, Windows XP and Windows 7 beta. I did already installed them in that order. This is how it is layed out on the harddisk:
Now i want to use grub to present a menu at boot so i can select an OS. Because I installed XP last it boots straight into XP. I've understood i should be able to do the following:
All goes well until the last step (grub-install). It gives an error stating that /dev/sda doesn't exist, which is correct; It doesn't. I do have the "device" listed outside of the chrooted environment.
My question is: How do I get /dev/sda available in my chrooted environment?

I just reinstalled Ubuntu 10.04 (I was running it wubi but various issues prompted me to install it in a separate partition) and now windows isn't an option in the GRUB. I have windows Vista on /dev/sda2 and I can see it on GParted.
I tried looking through some of the other posts, but I think that I need some direct help with this one. I have tried update-grub and nothing changed.
I don't use Windows often, but it is nice to have the option.
All this is running on a Toshiba Saellite A215
Using Ubuntu 10.4 32-bits, Windows 7 32-bits (sda) and Windows 7 64-bits (sdb). Grub displays 2 menu-entries Windows 7, but both entries start Windows 32-bits (sda).
"sudo update -grub" doesn help.

recently i installed ubuntu 10.10 and now when i start my computor i dont see windows xp in the grub bootloader anymore. (it worked fine for 10.04) my brother as well has had the same problem.

When I select the Windows Vista entry in GRUB, the screen goes blank for a moment before returning me to the GRUB menu.I have tried pressing 'e' to edit the GRUB entry before booting, and what I find is that it says the root is hd0,1Since my Windows partition is sda1 in GPartEd, should that translate to, for example hd0,0 ?The only reason I want to boot into Windows in the first place is to install a BIOS upgrade from HP, which only works with their Windows software. If someone can suggest an alternative way of doing this then I won't need to boot into Windows at all.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI want to dual boot Windows Server 2008 r2 and Ubuntu 10.10 . First, I installed Server 2008 r2 then Ubuntu. After the installation, Grub only found Ubuntu, and "Windows Recovery Enviroment (loader)" on dev/sda1. The Windows OS is installed on dev/sda2. When i load "Windows Recovery Enviroment (loader)" it does a chdsk, then reboot the PC.
How can i make grub find the Windows OS?
Edit: The partition on dev/sda1 is called System Reserved
i wiped my entire hard drive that had xp as its only OS. I freshly installed a Windows 7 ultimate and everything went perfectly. I then decided to install 10.4. I split the partitions correctly (i had experience doing this already with my laptop, which has xp/10.4). Ubuntu 10.4 install went flawlessly, except for one thing. Now when i boot up the pc, it goes straight into 10.4. I have tried holding shift during the start up to force the boot menu, and it just shows the Ubuntu 10.4 OS as choices. Any clue what i could do to make Win7 appear in the boot menu?

Now I installed from the Live-CD and everything went fine, only problem came after the installation when I noticed GRUB didn't find windows at all.
Now I did fdisk -l and here's the result:

I have windows7 installed in my laptop. I tried installing Redhat linux in it, and I was successful. But then I logged in with windows7 and deleted the partition in which I had installed redhat through computer management. Now my system doesnt boot with windows instead it boots with GRUB. Also to inform that the deleted linux partition I merged with Windows.

I've installed Lenny with no problem, but I tried switching to Squeeze, and grub for some reason didn't pick up on the Windows partition this time - it just shows the two Linux options (debian and debian single-user). I check the menu.lst file (which I've edited under Lenny with no issues), but for some reason it doesn't exist at all in this install. Is it in a different location with Squeeze maybe?

I do not know what to do, i cannot load windows partition. it just loads grub again. this must have been something that happened when i upgraded to the 10.04 or w/e. can someoen help me out with what i can do to stop this or fix it. maybe i can reinstall but i want to know what will work first, i do not have a lot of time to fool with my computer like this again. i spent a week getting ubuntu on my computer the first time so i do not ever want to spend that much time again especially in finals week. !
View 1 Replies View RelatedSo I shrunk my Windows 7 partition. Now I have a 450GB partition with Windows 7 on it and a 50GB partition for Ubuntu that is unallocated space currently. So when I go to the setup for Ubuntu, booted into using my USB flash drive, it doesn't recognise that Windows is there. It thinks that the hard drive, all 500GB of it, is free space. Going into GParted, it also seems to think that the entire hard drive is a blob of unallocated space. According to tutorials online, this shouldn't be happening. It should recognise the two different partitions. So I went into Computer in Ubuntu (Live) just to double-check and indeed all my Windows files are there and I can still boot into Windows just fine.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am actually facing a vague problem here. I was previously running Windows XP and Ubuntu . Ubuntu was installed Windows XP The problem is
1. First I tried to do some disk partitioning. That ended up with some error.
2. Ignoring that, I went to install Windows 7 over Windows XP but I was not able to proceed with Windows 7 , because the partitions were corrupted.
3. So I used Ubuntu LIVE CD (Grub was lost at this point )and used 'testdisk' and recovered the partitions.
4. Now installed the Windows 7 successfully.
5. Now again I moved to Ubuntu Live CD to write the GRUB. After which I tried restarting
6. Now Ubuntu is booting perfectly as before. But the problem is with Windows
7. The GRUB loader instead of showing Windows 7, it shows Windows XP !!! . and there is no other entry for windows. When I tried opening it, it says "error, cant read file" and further inout moves back to the grub loader list again.
"How do I change the entry to Windows 7 from Windows XP and boot Windows7 successfully " I tried it a couple of times, same thing happens . So how to change the entry?
