Here's today's problem: I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 and hope to have it run alongside Win XP PRO, which it had for months.
Only, when I select WinXP in GRUB, nothing happens. Oh the screen goes dark for a few seconds, but then the GRUB screen reappears. Ubuntu 10.04 functions correctly.

What I need to know is how to make GRUB load WinXP.
I want to make XP default and get that count down thing so while the countdown I can switch to ubuntu.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been a happy little GRUB user for a while now, but now I want to use GRUB to boot a physically separate WinXP hard drive, and I can't seem to do that. Normally GRUB is easy, (I even have a nice splash screen of my own making). Its a champion solution for booting into Ubuntu Linux on /dev/sda5 or Win XP on /dev/sda1.
My second HD which Linux recognizes as /dev/sdb, has a Win XP boot sector and Win XP in one partition.
Normally I boot off /dev/sda using GRUB, and from Linux I can mount and have access to /dev/sdb - that works well. Occasionally however, I need to boot the separate Win XP system on the second HD, and to do that I switch the boot drive in the BIOS, but lately that is getting to be a bit tedious.
Initially I though to give the additional boot choice to GRUB, I simply had to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and point to the second HD (where /dev/sdb = hd1 in GRUB speak). Unfortunately, when I select the new choice, it simply boots Win XP off the first HD.
I'm confident GRUB does look at the first partion on hd1 as expected as I can induce an error by having hd1 disconnected, or write silly partion numbers into menu.lst. So if it does in fact find the first partion on hd1, why doesn't it boot? Why does it default to WinXP on hd0?
I have diligently tried physically swapping SATA drive cables and playing with bios switching and have messed about a fair bit with menu.lst to make sure I have drive and partition numbers right, but all to no avail. I have also tried changing rdisk(0) in boot.ini to rdisk(1) on the second drive when it is not the boot drive.
I'm afraid the only other thing I can think of is that the second hard drive requires a Linux boot sector if I am going to boot it up from GRUB, but somehow that doesn't make sense. Surely GRUB can work across physically separate drives, so I'm open to other ideas first.
I've got an old Dell Precision 670 which has a SCSI disk. I installed 10.04 and everything worked fine - I could boot into 10.04 from the GRUB menu. I later added an IDE disk and installed WinXP Pro on it.
When I ran 'sudo update-grub', Lucid discovered the IDE disk and added a WinXP Pro entry to the GRUB menu. Now, though I can still boot 10.04 from the GRUB menu, I can't boot WinXP - the screen goes blank, and I have to hit Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart.

early tl;dr: The fancy grub breaks on my wubi 10.04 install, can I force it to use the old grub?
When I rebuild grub.cfg (last time was yesterday for kernel update to .37), and shut down / reboot, grub breaks because it can't 'loadfont' and a few other errors which are related to the 'graphical' grub boot menu.
To fix this I have to boot into a live CD (also Ubuntu 10.04) and run the following:

I know how to fix it but is there a way to skip having to do this on upgrades
(If I edit the grub.cfg before shutting down then this doesn't happen, obviously, but sometimes I forget and this is the result. I'd rather stop the problem at it's source than fight against the updater).
I have an HP Pavilion m7480n PC with Windows XP installed on the C-drive. I successfully installed FC 12 onto the spare USB drive. When I rebooted the PC all I got was a blinking underscore at the extreme upper left position of a totally black screen. After a bit of experimenting I found that if I hit the F1 key during the boot process, go into the BIOS setup, do nothing within the setup, and press ESC to get out of the setup then the PC will go back into the boot cycle a second time. During the second time however a small text message appears with words to the effect "Press any key to enter GRUB..." after which the GRUB splash screen comes up with the choice for FC 12 or "Other" (referring to Win XP). At that point I can boot into either one.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu Remix 10.04 on my wifes MSI U100 netbook. I did a dual boot just in case she had to get into Windows for something. I let the install automatically partion (did the side by side option). Anyway, Ubuntu works fine and imported all her documents and stuff. Problem is Windows XP won't boot. The first time I tried to boot Windows XP I got a message saying the hardware had changed and I had to select safe mode, normal boot, last known good, etc... I booted normally. I got the splash screen followed by a quick flash of BSOD and a reboot. I does this no matter how I try to boot Windows (safe, command prompt, etc). Anyone have any idea what the problem is?
View 3 Replies View RelatedIf I use the super grub disk I can get to my ubuntu partition otherwise my windows partition boots automatically. I spent over an hour in the community documentation using the live cd to reinstall grub and nothing has fixed it. I think that grub is installed and the windows bootloader is just taking precedence.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed karmic to a flash drive, and grub overwrote my winxp mbr. On boot it has an error that grub can't load and then shows the grub rescue prompt. I've tried fixboot and fixmbr and bootcfg /rebuild from the repair console with no luck. Grub loads if I leave the flash drive in, but it takes a long time.

I have two HDD, one of 80 GB with Lubuntu and a broken windows, the other HDD is 160 GB with another Win Xp, but it seems its windows boot loader is broken or the windows boot loader was essentially on the 80 GB HDD and was replaced by GRUB. GRUB only detect the WinXp on the 80 GB HDD. How can I make GRUB detect winXp on the 160 GB HDD?

However when I try to start the machine what I see is a mere black screen... The boot order is fine. However it seems strange that no data is read from the virtual hard drive (which is about 2.15 GB):

I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my laptop alongside WinXP. For some reason Grub hides my CD drive from WinXP but not Ubuntu. I can access the drive in Ubuntu, but it doesn't appear in WinXP at all.
I know there is a solution to this, but I can't remember what it is. Something to do with modifying grub.conf or something like that.

I have WinXP, Ubuntu 10.04 and Debian 6.0 installed on my Desktop.
After installing my latest distro, Debian 6.0 WinXP disappeared from my GRUB menu!
Relevant details are:

I am running fedora 11 and I am configuring my menu.ist file. I attached the menu.ist file in txt extension. What I want is:
1- I want the first option to be Windows XP (which is on the second HD) and I want the text to be Windows XP instead of Other. This option should be the default (so if I didn't press anything it will boot from xp).
2- To remove the 2.6.29.4-167.fc11.i686.PAE kernel from the list and keep the 2.6.30.5-43.fc11.i586.img available as a second option.
3- Increase the countdown time to 10 seconds.
I've been trying to setup some installation partitions made with Debian and Windows Installation CDs/Images and everything works well with the Debian, but not Windows. This is a similar setup as some Laptop companies do by putting a hidden "recovery" partition.How do I get grub to boot say WinXp/Win9x or what have you?Is there a better alternative?
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy set up is internal hard drive Windows 7, external Ubuntu Karmic. The reason I have it this way, despite Linux being my main OS, is because my internal hard drive is 6 years old and half the capacity of my external new one. Have tried quite a few set ups with various Linux platforms, but have finally settled on above. As yet, I don't know Linux or Ubuntu all that well. Getting somewhere, but it's a steep learning curve.
Because of constant errors reinstalling WinXP - umpteen installations and it keeps crashing - the problems are with security updates and SP3 - I finally bit the bullet and intalled Win 7. I only need Windows for a few essential programs or I'd happily never look at it again, so it filled me with horror doing this, but I couldn't take the crashes any more. So, today, Win 7 installs just nicely. However, I can no longer boot my external Ubuntu hard drive. The error is, 'Grub loading stage 1.5... Grub loading please wait... Error 15'. I load up the live cd, but when I try to follow instructions given to other people with Error 15 (editing files, accessing root) I don't have permissions.
I have made several start-up disk, just made 2 today, but certain ISO's won't even go into the "start up disk creator" window.I've made them with Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Linux Mint, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Ultimate-Edition, Peppermint One & Peppermint Ice, but I can't make one with Puppy, PCLinuxOS, and a couple others.I'm trying to make one with "system rescue cd" so I can use it to totally wipe my 500GiB hdd, before I start to partition & install OS's on it. 1. Why does it refuse to make some & not others?

After I finally successfully installed ubuntu, I cannot start Windows from the GRUB start menue.

I'm new to the world of dual booting Ubuntu. My computer is currently running windows 7 64-bit, and I'm trying to install Ubuntu 32-bit to run beside it. So I've created a boot disk, and I try to install Ubuntu. The weird thing is when I get to the frame that says "Prepare disk space" it correctly shows that I have windows 7 on the computer, but it shows it's on the wrong drive. In fact within the Ubuntu installer it doesn't even show the physical drive that windows is on, it only find the other two drives. If I load up System > Administration > Disk Utility then I can see all 3 physical hard drives and all the partitions on them, but not under the Ubuntu installer.
So I tried installing Ubuntu onto one of the other physical hard drives and that seemed to go just fine. The only problem is now when I boot, the only way I can swap operating systems is to go into my BIOS and change the boot order of my hard drives. If the hard drive with Windows is higher in the boot priority, it will boot windows, no problem. If the hard drive with Ubuntu on it is higher, then it takes me to grub, where it correctly shows windows 7 and ubuntu. Only problem is when I choose windows 7 all I get is a blinking cursor and nothing happens.
If I choose Ubunutu it boots correctly and everything works. So in a way I do kind of have them both working, but it'd be nice not to have to go into my BIOS just to change operating systems. I'm guessing that grub's problem is that the Ubuntu installer identifies the wrong drive that Windows is installed on, so when I pick Windows from grub it goes to the wrong drive. Can I fix grub manually? Or is there some compatibility issue between Windows 7 64-bit and Ubuntu 32-bit that is causing this conflict?
I am trying to get Debian 6 to work on an hp Z400 - the problem is that it came with a NVIDIA Quadro NVS 295 graphics card; there may be a driver for Linux, but it doesn't matter, because GRUB insists on switching to some sort of graphics mode and the screen just blanks and switches itself off. Is there any way to make sure during installation that GRUB gets configured to stay in character mode only?
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy system is an Acer Aspire One Happy netbook. It runs Windows 7 OEM. I installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix, which works fine. Unfortunately, I put GRUB in the MBR (I wanted it on Ubuntu partition in order to use Win 7 bootloader). Acer netbooks seem to have a particular MBR (in order to run e-Recovery Management), which is different to the standard Windows 7 MBR.
Moreover, in the internet there are instruction to restore Acer MBR, but they do not seem useful, since I do not find the MBRWRWIN.EXE and RTMBR.BIN files on the hidden partition. Is there a way to tell GRUB to remove itself and restore the previous content of the MBR (something like the old "lilo -u")? Does GRUB make a copy of the content of the MBR before installing itself? Where is it, if it is so?
Just upgraded to 9.10 on a laptop with dead Vista which I lost when I moved over to UBUNTU some time ago. Never any problems but when fiddling at boot up tonight I accidentally selected to boot up the Vista loader which went into the Vista recovery, and since then the laptop only opens up the Vista Recovery, ie it does not go to the Grub. Any ideas on how I can get to boot UBUNTU again?
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen I restart, GRUB sometimes doesn't start. It just hangs at the flashing cursor before grub.
When I restart again, grub works fine. The flashing cursor shows at the top of the screen for a few seconds, and then there is one or more new lines, and then the grub screen.
This is on an HP Pavilion 640 which is otherwise very stable.
I have been successfully triple-booting Windoze and 2 varieties of Linux on my desktop for some years now with very few problems. The latest configuration which I have been using for 6 months or so is Kubuntu 10.04 & Ubuntu 10.04. The last version installed was Kubuntu 10.04 and on installation it's version of grub found Ubuntu 10.04 no problem (other than a minor problem with partition numbering which was manually fixed) and all was well.
I have just upgraded Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 (by clean install rather than version upgrade) and the new grub from Ubuntu 10.10 will not start the existing Kubuntu 10.04, I just get "error: file not found".The grub.cfg file from Ubuntu 10.10 is completely different (copy attached) but the partition references & numbers etc. are correct so why will the existing Kubuntu 10.04 not start ? Windoze starts OK.

I just want to ask if there is a way to make grub bootloader automatically boot to ubuntu every start up. And only make the bootloader appear when I press a certain key(ie. F7) so that I can boot to windows when I do not want to boot on Ubuntu.

So I reinstalled windows, and rebuilt grub. Now when I try to launch windows from the grub menu it says "error: no such device: 0a82ff1982ff0849". How do I go about fixing that? I can boot to Ubuntu fine now.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install ubuntu 9.04 in a desktop but when loading the first screen it appears a box writing somthing "vmlifuz" the only choose that have is "ok" when i am hit button "ok" does not working, if a press it again (when the box with the ok disappears) load the dialog saying "Try ubuntu" , "install ubuntu" etc. Then if a hit one of this the dialog comes again saying something about "live-install" i hit ok but this time not process in the installation. After that I had try to intall windows xp but when go to load kernal prompt a message could not load a setupdd.sys. I had try to install Linux mint after the starting screen says ready and then nothing , i had try to install fedora only running the cd without even a message only a black screen. At last i had install ubuntu to another pc and i took the hard disk and plug it to this one, when i power on the pc after bios info in the screen come this "grub rescue>"
View 3 Replies View RelatedBefore: I had 2 os's ubuntu and windows installed on my system. Recently, I decided to install ubuntu to a flash drive. All went well except grub was not installed to the flash drive, but appended the existing grub setup on my hard drive.
Now: Even if I set the default system in grub as windows, or the original ubuntu install, my system will not boot unless the usb stick is plugged in. I get message. Error: grub rescue: My ideal solution: To stop grub searching for my flashdrive before loading the boot menu, and if possible to write grub to the flash stick.
I did an install of Jessie on a Macbook 2,1 to be the machine's only operating system, but it won't boot, showing only a black screen with a blinking cursor. I think the problem is caused by a mistake I made during the installation process, where I selected yes for the prompt:This machine's firmware has started the installer in UEFI mode but it looks like there may be existing operating systems already installed using "BIOS compatibility mode". If you continue to install Debian in UEFI mode, it might be difficult to reboot the machine into any BIOS-mode operating systems later.
If you wish to install in UEFI mode and don't care about keeping the ability to boot one of the existing systems, you have the option to force that here. If you wish to keep the option to boot an existing operating system, you should choose NOT to force UEFI installation here. Force UEFI installation?
