I was thinking of creating an extremely minimal version of Xubuntu using XFCE. I have a Dell Mini 9, a netbook that uses a wireless-g card requiring bcmwl-kernel-source to work. What I would like to do is use either the alternate CD or mini.iso minimal install file to perform a command line install-style installation of the system. So far, what I am thinking (from reading this [url].... article:
HTML Code:
http:[url].....is to start off with these packages to begin with:
xorg
slim (if possible with 9.10, unsure if it is still available. in short, i want to use a lightweight display manager)
xfce4
xfce4-goodies
xubuntu-default-settings
bcmwl-kernel-source
aptitude
My opening questions are: Should I go with mini.iso or the Xubuntu Alternate Install CD (or the Ubuntu one)? If so, which one? What additional packages will I need to make the hardware accessible and fully functional? All I can think of so far would be sound (I'd like to stay away from PulseAudio if possible, it wreaks havoc with my computer), my webcam, and the memory card slot, if additional packages are needed for it?What other "core" packages should I include in this list? Should I include Synaptic, or other packages, and why? What do I need to take into consideration, since this is both a directly- and battery-powered computer?

I had been using Xubuntu 9.10 successfully for some time. Recently, however, I tried to boot Xubuntu, and instead of reaching the login screen, a "GRUB" interface appeared. The title was "GNU GRUB VERSION 1.97~beta4"
Below that, there were a few instructions describing the use of the Tab key and a blank command line interface beginning with "sh:grub7". Before this started occurring, my computer would turn on and then display a menu to choose the OS. If I selected Xubuntu, a few lines would flash by, and the login screen would appear. My computer is a Dell XPS M1530 laptop. The operating systems installed are Windows Vista Ultimate and Xubuntu 9.10. The Xubuntu was installed using a Wubi installation.
As far as I remember, I did not make any changes that may have caused this. The only significant event that did occur was a power outage, but my computer was not plugged in nor on at this time.
If everything works normally, how would I boot Wubi Xubuntu from the GRUB interface? Are there any other solutions to this problem?

How do I install SDL (and other libraries) onto my dual-boot (XP/Xubuntu) computer? With only what came on the Xubuntu disk, I am able to play Oolite at what seems to be 1000 FPS, and Torcs at about 70 FPS.

I've re-installed Windows and now can't boot xubuntu 9.1. I've looked at: [URL]. I did the the fdisk -l and tried mounting each of the partitions but I couldn't mount sda4 which I think is the partition that my xubuntu is located on. A clue that this is the partition is that it is the only one of type extended as I saw in gparted. It was also the only one apart from sda5 that I wasn't able to mount and sda5 I think was an old USB partition. Anything else I could try or are you going to need the output of "fdisk -l" to get a fuller picture.

The harddrive of an old laptop of mine recently died. Until I can replace it, I would like to use the xubuntu live-cd. However I would also like to be able to install some additional packages and change some settings, so it would be great if I could make it persistent. I know that it's possible to install to an usb-pendrive, but the problem is that the laptop isn't able to boot from usb-devices.
Is it possible to install xubuntu to usb, but boot the system wiith the live-cd? Or is there another way to use an usb-pendrive to keep some settings/packages?

I'd like to change the boot splash screen from the current 'Xubuntu' text in white on a black background.Making changes in Settings->Xfce 4 Setting Manager->Session and Startup has had no effect, and Startup Manager does not display an option to change the splash. I feel I'm missing something obvious here, but where should I be looking?

got a bit of a strange and probably difficult issue. I recently repaired a friends pc (WinXP) and felt inspired to tinker with my old 98 system. First I'm trying to find out how to dual boot Win98se with any distro of Ubuntu.
The system's sprecs are:
Gigabyte GA-7IX f4a motherboard
AMD slot A 900Mhz thunderbird
384MB ram (3x 128MB)
[Code]...
I was able to get xubuntu 6.06 to run and even installed, but can't figure out how to dual boot. I would prefer 8.04 or later since I am more familiar with those ones.

I can't get Ubuntu 10.04 to boot for install (to my desktop), it displays the logo then hangs for about a minute and displays the alert dialouge saying "Boot disk error."I've tried multiple CD-Rom drives, burned from multiple computers, with both the desktop and server downloads. I'm down about 10 CDs and 2 DVDs here I've checked their integrity (md5) as well as checked the disk integrity from another computer (laptop) and everything passed. I got xUbuntu to install effortlessly, so I don't know what's causing the problem for Ubuntu. I can even look at the contents of the Ubuntu Server CD from within xUbuntu -- so, I know the disk really should work.
My system specs are pretty basic:
2 x Xeon 2.0Ghz
Tyan S2720 Motherboard
2 Gig (4x512) ECC PC266 RAM
[code]....
why xUbuntu worked and regular Ubuntu won't, and/or maybe what I can do to fix this?

Does anyone know how I can get xubuntu to boot up using the glint video driver instead of vesa? I am trying to get it loaded on an older machine and a previous version of ubuntu worked using the glint driver but the latest version of xubuntu (10.04) is using the vesa driver. Which is not working for me. I have tried ubuntu, xubuntu and lubuntu all version 10.04 and neither of them has worked. They all boot up into a terminal window (no GUI).
I tried creating an xorg.conf file and added a line specifying the glint driver. After doing that and trying to startxfce4 I get an error saying that it cannot load the glint module. Unfortunately that machine has no internet connection either. I guess it hasn't recognized my wireless card either.

I have an 8gb USB Flash Drive. I am trying to make a Xubuntu 11.04 boot disk from it. I have done this once before with Ubuntu, but not Xubuntu. The problem is that when I go into the Startup Disk Creator, I get this error and the process stops. This is what the Flash drive file structure looks like after the process stops.

I just installed Xubuntu 11.04 via wubi. Whenever I would attempt to do a normal install, the graphics would seem to crash and the screen would become distorted and basically just blocks of black and white. So I tried to do it in graphics safe mode, which succeeded. However, now I cannot start the Xubuntu GUI, and I get the error message "Display not found".

I have an old laptop, and am a basic linux user, but this install is crazy. I know that I have to have acpi=off to work, and got Linux Mint 7 installed from the live cd but want Xubuntu. The Xubuntu 9.1 live CD works fine as long as I put the acpi=off parameters in the boot string, and I check the additional options just to be sure. But after install I cannot even get into the grub, it says grub loading for a split second then blinking cursor

I just installed gpsim on Xubuntu Xfce 4 using:
sudo apt-get install gputils
sudo apt-get install gpsim
No problems with the install.
However, when trying to launch gpsim by typing gpsim on the command line, does not launch a GUI. It has been a long time since using gpsim/linux, but I am sure I remember gpsim having a GUI.

the screen is still on but it's like the computer is going idle or something, It makes watching tv shows/movies pretty hard. I have to constantly keep moving the mouse. I have a pentium 4 with about 600 megs of ram. Latest version of Xubuntu.I went into screensaver options and power management options. It's set to two hours before the screensaver comes on, and never to put the screen idle but the screen seems to do it every 20-30 minutes.I'm not entirely sure where to look now, i don't think there could be anything wrong with the hardware, otherwise moving the mouse wouldn't make the screen come back on.

I have a simple Xubuntu server at my house that I connected an extra external hard drive too. What I would like to do is setup a backup system for my computers to backup to this hard drive. How would I go about setting up the drive to be shared on Xubuntu? I would prefer commands as I use PuTTY to manage the server.

Triple booting. Windows 7 Evaluation, Xubuntu 9.10 and I just installed Absolute. Xubuntu uses Grub 2. I was going to do three things. Install Lilo to Absolutes /boot, go inot Xubuntu and reinstall Grub 2 to /boot and then just install GAG boot loader to load all three. Instead I was distracted and installed Lilo to the MBR by accident, which overwrote GRUB 2.
I can boot into Absolute fine and Windows 7 fine but the problem I am having is with Grub 2. The Xubuntu Live CD is not working for some reason, I mean it won't boot. I downloaded it twice and burnt it to disc both times. I am not sure why at this point.
So how do I add Xubuntu 9.10 to Lilo. If I try and do it manually or any other way it starts to boot Absolute instead and then freezes, even though I am pointing it to my Xubuntu partition. I am leaving something out. It has been a long time since I used Lilo and even then I was just as clueless.

Having problems installing Xubuntu 9.04 to my Dell Latitude CPi (old, I know, but available...). Problem is that the CDROM is not working right and the BIOS doesn't support boot from USB so I can't do a complete live CD install via the CDROM or USB.What I'd like to do instead is install the ISO to the HD and run the install from that HD. Even with the CDROM problems I am able to load the Live CD installer from CDROM.
With that I think the best option will be to extract the ISO files to the HD (attach to another computer and extract to a FAT32 partition, then replace HD back in the latitude) then direct the liveCD bootloader to find the install files on the HD. Unfortunately I don't know the necessary commands to pass to the bootloader.
