General :: Xubuntu Screen Keeps Turning Off?

Nov 18, 2010

the screen is still on but it's like the computer is going idle or something, It makes watching tv shows/movies pretty hard. I have to constantly keep moving the mouse. I have a pentium 4 with about 600 megs of ram. Latest version of Xubuntu.I went into screensaver options and power management options. It's set to two hours before the screensaver comes on, and never to put the screen idle but the screen seems to do it every 20-30 minutes.I'm not entirely sure where to look now, i don't think there could be anything wrong with the hardware, otherwise moving the mouse wouldn't make the screen come back on.

General :: Xorg DPMS Off: Keep VT From Turning Screen Back On

Mar 19, 2010

I have an embedded board with a small UPS. When AC power goes down, I need to turn off all power hungry devices in order to have a clean shutdown. First thing I do, is set DPMS to force powerdown, then go through the usual SIGTERM/SIGKILL/umount sequence. I have an Intel i915 Display adapter connected to an LVDS LCD panel.

Unfortunately, when Xorg dies, Xserver or the VT code turn the LCD panel back on.

I even tried working around it by directly poking the panel enable register in the Display chip, so that X doesn't know about it, but the panel goes back on when the VT comes back.

Is there any "legal" way of keeping the display off?

General :: Logging In Sends Back To Xubuntu Login Screen?

Feb 17, 2010

When I start up my computer Xubuntu is asking me to login (which is strange as I have login disabled). Then, when I do enter my password, it is accepted and after a few screen changes I am returned to the login screen. (I know the password is correct as the login screen informs you immediately if you enter it incorrectly.) Also, I can see that my display settings have been changed--the monitor resolution is wrong--my cursor is way big as are buttons, text etc..

General :: GRUB Xubuntu Boot - Instead Of Reaching The Login Screen?

May 24, 2010

I had been using Xubuntu 9.10 successfully for some time. Recently, however, I tried to boot Xubuntu, and instead of reaching the login screen, a "GRUB" interface appeared. The title was "GNU GRUB VERSION 1.97~beta4"

Below that, there were a few instructions describing the use of the Tab key and a blank command line interface beginning with "sh:grub7". Before this started occurring, my computer would turn on and then display a menu to choose the OS. If I selected Xubuntu, a few lines would flash by, and the login screen would appear. My computer is a Dell XPS M1530 laptop. The operating systems installed are Windows Vista Ultimate and Xubuntu 9.10. The Xubuntu was installed using a Wubi installation.

As far as I remember, I did not make any changes that may have caused this. The only significant event that did occur was a power outage, but my computer was not plugged in nor on at this time.

If everything works normally, how would I boot Wubi Xubuntu from the GRUB interface? Are there any other solutions to this problem?

I can't figure out what is causing it and how to stop it.

Ubuntu :: Power Management Screen Not Turning Off?

May 12, 2010

I have an issue where the screen on my laptop will not shut off with the power management tool. The Default Power Manager does not have an option for this.My screen will go blank after a set amount of time, but the lcd-backlight will remain on. I would want the power manager to shut the screen off completely (including turning off the lcd backlight) without shutting down the computer it-self. So the computer can continue to do what I left it to do in the case I forget to close the lid. With the screen shut off completely, will preserve the life of the back light and reduce power consumption.

Is there a better power manager app that will allow me to do this a tweak to the existing default power manager that will allow the functionality I am seeking? laptop was perfectly able to do this under a win-xp environment, so I know the machine is physically capable of doing this. Note: My WinXP OS and Ubuntu OS are on seperate physical drives so there is no dual boot issues. So when I am using one there is no trace of the other present

Ubuntu Installation :: Screen Stays Blank After Turning Off An On?

Aug 16, 2010

I just installed Mythbuntu 10.04 and have my Sony LCD TV connected via a DVI to HDMI cable. The issue I am encountering is that everything works fine until I turn off the TV and turn it back on later, because the screen stays blank and from what the TV tells me there is no signal. I have no idea what can cause this. I checked the TV settings in terms of power saving and turned it all off. I turned off the screen saver in Ubuntu, but still the same issue. My motherboard uses the ATI HD4200 onboard graphics engine

Ubuntu :: Toshiba Laptop - Hardware - Screen Goes Blank After Few Seconds - From Turning On

Sep 16, 2010

I'd like your input on this. A toshiba laptop screen goes blank after few seconds(from turning on).

At first i thought it was fan that was out and once it got hot enough it cut the laptop off like my old Acer did.

But after close examination i noticed that it continues working. HD still spining and fan blows..

Example: Turn on>Hit F2 to go in to Bios> Bios screen appears>Before i have a chance to do anything it geos blank but continues working> I hit Cntrl ALt Del> it resets and screen comes right back up>second later it goes blank again.

ALSO the toshiba logo and whole screen seems to have a red tint to it.

I also get a media test error but that is likely from hard drive not being there during some of the tests.

DO you think it can be an LCD Backlight issue? or possibly video card?

Slackware :: Automating Xorg RandR Turning Laptop Screen Off If External Monitor Is Connected?

Jan 2, 2010

I have a netbook (Acer Aspire One) I'm running Slackware 13. and usually, I prefer to connect an external monitor. When I switch my machine on with the monitor connected, the display is duplicated on both screens and since I just want the netbook's screen to be off and only see the display on the external monitor, I can doxrandr --output LVDS --off

Great! However, it's a hassle to do this every time I log in and I'd like to automate the process if possible. I did some googling and I found that if you want to automate xrandr commands, you can put a script in /etc/X11/Xsession.d/ (see this). I wrote the following script to automate my xrandr commands and since the Xsession.d directory didn't exist, I tried creating it. The script was called 45custom-xrandr_settings, as the one on the RandR wiki is called the same.

Code:
#!/bin/bash
# Check whether the external monitor is connected

Ubuntu :: Can't Configure Screen Locking In Xubuntu

May 15, 2011

I'm having difficulty disabling the screen lock feature when resuming from suspend in Xubuntu 11.04 x64. The screen lock seems to be implemented in xscreensaver, so I disabled the screen saver in the Settings Manager. This did not work. In the 'Power Manager' section of Settings Manager, I unchecked "lock screen when going for suspend/hibernate' and this did not work. I found a possible workaround in a bug report that seems to describe the problem I'm having: [URL] but the solution offered there (install gconf-editor and disable screen lock from there) did not work. The bug report states that the problem was fixed in xfce4-utils 4.4.2-1ubuntu1, but from what I can tell the version of that package in 11.04 is newer than that. The only thing that seems to work is to completely uninstall xscreensaver

Ubuntu :: Xubuntu Scrambled Screen After Compositing Turned On

I turned on screen compositing in xubuntu 9.1 and that scrambled the screen and now I can't read the screen. How do I undo that change? If I alt-ctr-F2 that goes to the command line. Then restartx goes back to the scrambled screen. Why does xubuntu recovery mode not offer any option to redo the video. Sorry, I assumed Xubuntu would ask for a confirmation like 'click yes if you can still see the screen' before allowing a change that can toast the system.

Also I tried:

Apple :: Screen Doing Funky Things With Ubuntu And Xubuntu For PPC / Fix It?

Nov 1, 2010

This is my first thread so bear with me. I have an Apple ibook 3G with a 500mhz ppc processor and 384MB of Ram that used to run OSX 2.8 but I am trying to install linux on it. I want to install Ubuntu or Xubuntu on it because I have been a Ubuntu user for a couple of years and I love it. But when I tried to install them my screen does funky things. The screen only fills up part of the screen and then there is like a partial mirror image of the screen on bottom of that screen and i think its something to do with the graphics config because I installed Yellow Dog Linux on it and it worked for a while and then does the same thing so I know its not the screen its self. I hope to get a few pics of it soon. But I was wondering if anyone has had the same problem or knew how to fix it.
