How do I install SDL (and other libraries) onto my dual-boot (XP/Xubuntu) computer? With only what came on the Xubuntu disk, I am able to play Oolite at what seems to be 1000 FPS, and Torcs at about 70 FPS.

I'm an "educated novice" at best when it comes to all of this and still learning slowly, but surely. I followed an online tutorial and before I realized quite what i'd done, I had dual installed Ubuntu linux 10.10 on my laptop. ISO'd this, partitioned that and realized....i'm in way over my head. Then I started researching how to just go back in time and get my "safe" windows vista back until I'm ready to make the switch to linux and just ended up getting more confused.
How do I actually BOOT into Windows on a dual boot computer that I apparently just created? How, if need be, do I undo everything I just did in the past few hours and careless tinkering? If I decide to stay with Linux, how do I get my damn wireless router to recognize?
I have a laptop with two partitions, one with Windows XP and one for storage (formatted in NTFS). I would like to install Ubuntu on the storage partition, but my problem is that I can't boot from CD (or anything else) because my BIOS is password protected. I obviously don't know the password. y question is: If I plug the laptop's hard drive into another computer, install Ubuntu as described above and then reconnect it to my laptop, will it work?

I was able to get xubuntu 6.06 to run and even installed, but can't figure out how to dual boot. I would prefer 8.04 or later since I am more familiar with those ones.
Since puppy installs in ram, unstead of on harddrive, does that mean you could not use that computer as a dual boot one? I mean won't puppy always be wanting to run on boot up, since it's not on a seperate partitian ?

Before showing me this message i tryed to uninstall the Xubuntu inside from windows xp because several problems showed up after installing Xubuntu. I was thinking of ~100GB for Windows for apps and games etc. ~20-50GB for Ubuntu and some third partition, where I store my common files like media, pics, docs, downloads and stuff, taking the rest of the free space.
What filesystem should the shared partition be? Is there some smart way to get windows home directories and linux home directories to point to the same place on the shared partition or would it be recommended to just keep them separated?
I followed a tutorial to install XP across my entire HDD. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 "Alongside another OS". Ubuntu loads fine, but when trying to load XP, the boot screen shows up, but then the computer restarts and returns to the GRUB menu.
I saw some threads on this site and tried to type: sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
In the terminal. It returned a blank text document so I'm not sure if that information was outdated. I then typed: sudo fdisk -l

I have (had) a dual boot computer;Win XP and Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit.I decided it was necessary to enlarge my Root and Home Partitions. Using the instructions http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...ome+Partitions I successfully enlarged the partitions and restored 10.10 (I used the copy command suggested by Irony). However when I boot the computer it boots to Ubuntu but no longer gives me the option of going into XP(it is not listed in Grub menu). Is there a fairly straightforward way of getting XP back on the Grub menu so I can boot to XP again?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a PC with three HD's. My primary hard drive has a single partition and contains Win XP SP3. I have a second hard drive which I use to store junk (pictures, movies, etc). The third, 60GB HD, I just put into my PC and I wanted to install Fedora 11 onto it. I want to have a dual boot system with WinXP being the default boot. I downloaded the latest build of Fedora 11, created a LiveCD out of it and I tried to install the OS onto this third new hard drive. I installed the OS, I told it to use the entire third HD and to have a dual boot setup and make the WinXP OS be the default boot. The installation seemed to go without any problems. However, after restarting the PC, the PC stops booting right after the DELL screen. It gives me a cursor and that's it. It just sits there. I have tried redoing the install about 4 different times now and no matter how I change the different installation options, I get the same result. Now I can't even boot into XP even after I disconnect the third drive. I am guessing that the dual boot got screwed up; I just don't know how to fix it and more importantly, how to install Fedora, dual boot.

then i have formatted my windows which is in the primary HDD.
Now when my computer restart it doesn't show my about wanting to start Ubuntu or windows it starts windows immediately.
PS: in my secondary HDD the partition which Ubuntu is installed on, i still see that it filled with data;it's not empty.

I just noticed that there is an icon on my desktop that is named Filesystem, it is the Windows XP portion of the hard drive. I don't remember seeing it on the desktop, I only noticed it 15 minutes ago after installing Adobe flash player. Is that icon supposed to be on my Fedora desktop?
View 6 Replies View RelatedSo im trying to backup my computer, and I understand the easiest and maybe best way is just through an external hard drive. Mine is 1 terabyte. Ive organized my folders by just putting everything into my documents. But when I hook up my external hard drive, and I try to drag and drop, even through explorer, or copy and paste the folder, it just creates a shortcut. Then, if I bring it to another computer and open that file it just goes to the my documents of that computer, so it's obviously useless. I know this is extremely basic but I know I should do it prior to dual boot just in case.

I have just replaced a Hard Drive, & had to reinstall XP & 10.04.2LTS from scratch, (it was a TOTAL failure) The system now will not boot into XP, or either of the 2 Linux kernels or the recovery modes, without several attempts. ( I'm using a LiveCD now.)
POST is good. GRUB loads, but when I select an OS, it powers off. Windows shows the splash for a few seconds, then shuts down. Yesterday, I was able to boot into Linux after booting into Windows, but today Windows won't boot either. On examining the GRUB menu (e) the first line in the Linux records is 'recordfail' I will attempt to boot from HDD now, & post the GRUB output here. EDIT: If I run MEMTEST first, up to Test6, it boots normally.

View 3 Replies View Relatedso i have a laptop (IBM Thinkpad t42) that completely wiped using DBAN (Derik's boot and nuke) and it doesn't have any operating system on it. i downloaded xubuntu and burned the ISO image onto a cd using brasero. it will boot form the disc so i know it isn't a disc problem, but when i hit enter to "tru Xubuntu without any change to your computer" or "install Xubuntu" it simply stays at this screen and does nothing. i have absolutely ZERO experience with ubuntu but i am for the most part pretty tech saavy.

Thus, when I boot the computer, I am prompted by a GRUB screen to select Windows Vista loader, Debian, and Debian (recovery mode). I would like to upgrade Windows Vista to Windows 7. Will this cause an issue with GRUB? Will a Windows 7 loader be added to the list or will a Windows 7 loader replace the Windows Vista loader? Will there have to be a setting change within Debian? My problem is that when I shut down and restart, I no longer have the option to choose windows. Must I blank out the disk and reinstall EVERYTHING from the start, or is there any way to save this? My Ubuntu setup is much simpler than my windows, and if I MUST sacrifice one, it has to be Ubuntu, because it will be much easier to duplicate my ubuntu work than my windows work.
It's been a while since I last installed a Linux distro on a machine that already houses another OS. I want to install OpenSuse (11.2) on a spare external drive that I have which will be connected to my PC through USB. The PC however, houses four other drives: one drive that has WinXP installed on it (NTFS) which is my normal boot drive, and three data drives - all NTFS.
Like I said, I want to install OpenSuse on the external drive through a network install. I don't want to end up with a boot menu where I can choose between OpenSuse and XP, I simply want to boot from the XP drive by default and boot from the USB drive when I tell my system to do so (I can call up a boot menu where I can tell my PC from which drive to boot).
Now I have done this many times - albeit too long ago to remember how I did it. I do remember however that last time I tried to do it, it installed a boot menu on my XP boot drive, and I had a hell of a time removing it. What do I need to look out for to prevent this from happening? How do I make sure nothing is changed on the other four drives? (The safest way would be to simply disconnect the other four drives from my system and install OpenSuse on the USB drive of course
I want to dual boot kubuntu. I am a linux noob so have basically no experience with linux except what i have done of the live cd. My problem is that when I get to the part of the installer relating to partitions. It wont allow me to select the free space I have shrunk off my windows/data partition. it calls the space unusable and will not allow me to proceed when it is selected. Shouldn't the installer turn the free space into a partition for kubuntu to install to? The installer also show a bar wich marks off the partitions and how much each one takes up it does recongnize that there is free space because it tells me that I have 25 gb free.

However I would also like to be able to install some additional packages and change some settings, so it would be great if I could make it persistent. I know that it's possible to install to an usb-pendrive, but the problem is that the laptop isn't able to boot from usb-devices.
Is it possible to install xubuntu to usb, but boot the system wiith the live-cd? Or is there another way to use an usb-pendrive to keep some settings/packages?
I currently have an old powermac 7220/200 with all ehe origanl stuff except for the hard drive which is now a slightly larger one. I was wondering if it was possible to set up a ubuntu installation on it using a 20g hard drive (I have got one of these going on a 486 running win98, just) and be able to run mac os as a dual boot system, possibly with 9.1 and the origanal mac os that come with it? Unfortunantly I cannot connect this computer to any internet even if I had a card that was compatible with mac os.

All I can think of so far would be sound (I'd like to stay away from PulseAudio if possible, it wreaks havoc with my computer), my webcam, and the memory card slot, if additional packages are needed for it?What other "core" packages should I include in this list? Should I include Synaptic, or other packages, and why?What do I need to take into consideration, since this is both a directly- and battery-powered computer?

i installed windows 7 successfully. When I installed it,I created 40 gb of unallocated space in the hard disk for the Fedora installation. However, whenever i start the partition editor during the Fedora installation, it says that there is no free space in your hardware, even though it shows 40gb space in the disk partition table.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am planing to install fedora 13 on my dual boot (windows-7 + fedora) laptop. Previously some one helped me installing fedora on my laptop. Below let me mention the my file system architecture as the question is related to it. It's a 320 GB hard drive.
1. First 250 MB primary partition (used to be for /boot, which is currently unallocated, because in last installation I chose fedora to install automatically).
2. Next 120 GB windows primary partition.
3. Next 200 GB Logical partition
a. First 125 GB for windows backup
b. rest for Linux (500 MB + 60 GB).
As Linux was installed later thus it wrote the boot partition itself. I want the boot partition in the first 250 MB partition (reason, to be safe, I don't want to mess up with the master boot record while playing with Linux), also need to install fedora 13. The architecture I want is following:
1. first 250 MB: /boot
2. Next 120 GB: Windows
3. Logical:
a. First 125 GB: Windows backup.
b. Next 4 GB: /swap
c. Rest: /root -- I want to install Fedora here
So, what I plan to do is to whip out all the current Linux file systems and insert fedora dvd and install according to my criteria!
Now my questions are:
1. since currently Linux has the master boot record, will it cause any problem for the machine to boot up from installation dvd, if I whip off all the current Linux partitions? (Or in other words, does installation/ live-CD need a master boot record to boot? -- I am guessing once I reinstall Linux, booting is not a problem).
2. Once Linux is whipped off, can windows boot up automatically?
3. Is there any worry of messing up windows, specially its boot sector(off course I will take precaution not touching windows partitions!)
this is my first thread. Just installed Desktop Kubuntu Natty 11.04 x86_64 and have been amazed by its possibilities. I would like though to install a second OS which is free-ware and unlike Kubuntu but as powerful and userfriendly. Would anyone recommend the followinf?
