General :: How To Find Proper Codec For Xubuntu
May 20, 2010
I have just installed the Xubuntu. And I feel that to use it play a mp3 is like kill myself twice.
I try to play it with Exaile, the boxed player with Xbuntu. But it says I need to install some mpeg codecs.
I found so many depends with sudo apt-cache depends.
How to install them? one by one?!

I'm trying to find a proper command to move a certain set of files according to date/time range. I am thinking that the command should be something like:
Code:
ls -l | grep 'date/time range' | mv /folder

I am having some trouble with xine, and because of this I cannot get any media player to work. When I try to play mp3's in Amarok, nothing happens and the song does not play. When I try to open xine, it opens a window that says
The stream 'There is no MRL' uses an unsupported codec:
Video Codec: MPEG 1/2 (0x0)
Start playback anyway?

This never happened with Ubuntu 8.10-9.10, but both my video players, VLC and Movie Player, say they can't find the wma codec (actually it says wmas, and this is referring to videos not audio) and says that this can't be put right, even though at the same time these players have begun to play the video correctly. I've got all the updates and the Restricted Extras, etc. Everything seems to be working. This is on an Acer Aspire One, dual booting with W7, installed from USB stick. I don't want to have to close the notification box each time.

How can I get mencoder to find the codec? Is there a specific place it looks for them?

I installed Fedora 10 on a Toshiba Laptop, where I had been successfully running Ubuntu for over a year. The newest iteration of Ubuntu was giving me problems, and the press was saying that Fedora 10 was pretty good, so I tried it.
Fedora 10 froze after any application was loaded. I couldnt correct it. I installed Fedora 9, and am no longer having that problem. However, I cant run any multimedia items on the computer. Particularly videos, including wmv, mpeg, or rm formats. This was not a problem in Ubuntu. I can't find any player or codec that will allow me to play these videos on Fedora 9. Can anyone suggest a solution for this?

I've been searching and haven't had any luck so far so I figured someone here's gotta know the answer to this. I'm troubleshooting why some of my MKV files will play audio on my WDTV and others won't. I'm suspecting it's got something to do with the audio codec inside the MKV. However, I don't know how to view what codecs are being used inside the MKV. Does anyone know of a good program or command I can run to view what's inside of the MKV

I have connected a PC running Ubuntu 10.10 to an LG TV through HDMI. I get an image, but the borders are out of the screen. At the screen dialogue of Ubuntu, the monitor isn't listed correctly. Ubuntu recognise the monitor as Goldstar Company Ltd. 52" whereas it is LG 47". I suppose it produces an image for 52", and for this reason I cannot see the borders. I have not a video card. The job is done by the i3 cpu, so I suppose it is not a problem of the card.
How can I solve it? LG doesn't provide a driver for Linux. Is there any other site where I can find the proper driver? Or is there anything else I can do to fix this? It is vital for me, as I cannot work at all with this setup.

I can't find any proper power management options on Fedora 15, only really basic simple options under the Advanced tab of the Screensaver.Where can I change the Power Management settings in F15?I'd like to set it so that
- screen powers down on closing the lid only, else never powers down / or after a certain time.
- the machine never powers down, either on AC or on battery.
- screen dims on battery after some time, but no on AC.
- hard drive never powers down.
I previously used Fedora 14 and earlier version on my laptops, and could easily set these power management either through the Screensaver, or directly from another menu. Also, I enabled the "Blank Screen Only" mode in the Screensaver, and disabled the "Lock Screen After", but it still asks for a password after some time. How can I stop that?

am trying to find a proper regex to match the two numbers in the following log entry.
Code:
15:08:16.142 INF Found 64468
15:08:16.142 ERR [Uniform test code=64469]
Basically the pattern I'm looking for will match the two different numbers spanned across two lines.Thought I need to use multi-line mode as follow but this doesn't match on [URL]...
Code:
/^($[0-9]{5}
[0-9]{5})$/m;

I've switched from Ubuntu Hardy to Xubuntu using the terminal. The only problem is I can't find my WinXP partition any more. In Ubuntu I used to mount it by going to 'Places' menu and clicking the folder icon. It's now gone. I can't see the icon in Xubuntu.Been reading other threads trying to find out what to do, but I'm relatively new to Linux. I can't find the folder under /media either. Also, I don't know what types my partitions are. Is this important? I figured I could access my Win folder in Xubuntu the way I would in Ubuntu.

find file-roller (aka 'Archive Manager') in xubuntu's Applications menu. I surely have it; it is the default application for opening archives, I can invoke it from the terminal but I can't just... run it from the Applications drop-down.I even tried the Application Finder with no luck using the keywords file-roller, archive, file, roller, .zip. .tar, etc. No luck. Can anyone else find it on their Applications dropdown menu? Or at least tell me that they can't find it either?I'm curious if I have some configuration glitch, or if this is a bug, or maybe there's just something in the water here.

I've just installed Fedora 12. I Love it. But .. how to install a codec package so I can watch movies? (.avi, Xvid etc.....) for Movie Player (default installed).
I've downloaded a package called "all-20071007.tar.bz2" that suggests it is just what I need.
I created a folder called "codecs" in usr/local/lib/" as su using the terminal as pkg instructions suggested.
When I tried to unpack the package into that new directory I got the reply that I did not have the right permissions.
Has anyone else imstalled this/or better codec packages?
How do I overcome this problem
ps if there's another/better video player, I'd like to know too, so I can try it out also.

I was thinking of creating an extremely minimal version of Xubuntu using XFCE. I have a Dell Mini 9, a netbook that uses a wireless-g card requiring bcmwl-kernel-source to work. What I would like to do is use either the alternate CD or mini.iso minimal install file to perform a command line install-style installation of the system. So far, what I am thinking (from reading this [url].... article:
HTML Code:
http:[url].....is to start off with these packages to begin with:
xorg
slim (if possible with 9.10, unsure if it is still available. in short, i want to use a lightweight display manager)
xfce4
xfce4-goodies
xubuntu-default-settings
bcmwl-kernel-source
aptitude
My opening questions are: Should I go with mini.iso or the Xubuntu Alternate Install CD (or the Ubuntu one)? If so, which one? What additional packages will I need to make the hardware accessible and fully functional? All I can think of so far would be sound (I'd like to stay away from PulseAudio if possible, it wreaks havoc with my computer), my webcam, and the memory card slot, if additional packages are needed for it?What other "core" packages should I include in this list? Should I include Synaptic, or other packages, and why? What do I need to take into consideration, since this is both a directly- and battery-powered computer?

All that I see now is a green screen and I can hear the audio. Everything else is fine, I can play those videos with Movie Player. I'm using debian squeeze.

Here is the error messages I receive when I try to download Banshee This is a major failure of your software management system. I've tried to enter data given to me at http://www.zaphu.com/2008/05/30/ubun...-m4a-playback/ It entered the first line of text but not the unwrapped second line. Another line appeared asking my 'neil' login. Tried to enter my password but typed letters wouldn't enter. What do I do?

I was under the impression that if I have any programs not installed by the package manager, they belong in /usr/local rather than /usr. But if I put the executable in /usr/local/bin, and the jar files into /usr/ local /lib, I get runtime errors about being unable to load the Java classes. So I resorted to putting things in /usr/bin and /usr/lib and it worked fine.Is this something that can only be corrected by compiling differently, or am I missing an installation step?

So I created a new branch from master and eventually merge the changes back, only some changes seemed to merge and it would seem I merged in one direction. Eventually I just decided to be sure master received all the 'experimental' changes then I deleted the experimental branch and made a new one. So this question is turning into a few questions suddenly:
1) How do I match up branches but keep them separate?
1a) Is that bad practice to not just make a new branch?
2) Why were the branches not the same after after one merge?
2a) Am I only supposed to call a merge on the one that I want to have all of the changes?

I am setting up a file server using Ubuntu and want to make sure I set up a folder structure that will last. Where should I be placing everything that I am sharing (Music, Pictures, Videos, etc)? In theory, if I was setting this up on Windows, I would create a folder directly under C: and set up the different areas of sharing under that (not that that approach would be best either).
Based on constructive criticism, the question is rather ambiguous. My question could be restated to ask "Where shouldn't I set this up? Would /usr be an appropriate place to start? Or would /opt be better?
