I have an 8gb USB Flash Drive. I am trying to make a Xubuntu 11.04 boot disk from it. I have done this once before with Ubuntu, but not Xubuntu. The problem is that when I go into the Startup Disk Creator, I get this error and the process stops. This is what the Flash drive file structure looks like after the process stops.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently acquired (another) older laptop in need of a hard drive. Lower capacity IDE laptop drives are getting hard to come by from reliable sellers. I'd like to rewire a USB port, and run it into the hard drive slot, running the system off a flash drive rather than a hard drive. I'm running in to the problem I can't find any way to set it up. The system does not support any BIOS options for messing with USB drives. Why it CAN boot off one is beyond be, it's not in the temp boot menu, but when I leave it in, it boots off USB by default. I tried loading Ubuntu, and I have tried copying the files off of a setup hard drive to the flash drive, but I have yet to be successful. Is it even possible to run a linux off a flash drive so I can keep a desktop environment, rather than having it reset to the default ISO state every time I reboot?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI wanted to install a Linux distro to a flash drive so that I can have a portable OS with all my settings, programs, etc. wherever I go. So I fired up a Linux Mint Live CD and installed Mint to the flash drive, and this seems to work OK. But now, whenever I try to boot up my system normally without the flash drive plugged in, it doesn't seem to work. It basically hangs for a bit, and then I get the following prompt:
However, when I try powering my system up when the USB is plugged into the computer, it gives me an option between using the OS installed on my USB and the OS installed on my HD. Selecting the latter, everything loads up just fine. I'm guessing that installing Mint to the flash drive somehow messed with my native Grub installation.

My opening questions are: Should I go with mini.iso or the Xubuntu Alternate Install CD (or the Ubuntu one)? If so, which one? What additional packages will I need to make the hardware accessible and fully functional? All I can think of so far would be sound (I'd like to stay away from PulseAudio if possible, it wreaks havoc with my computer), my webcam, and the memory card slot, if additional packages are needed for it?What other "core" packages should I include in this list? Should I include Synaptic, or other packages, and why?What do I need to take into consideration, since this is both a directly- and battery-powered computer?

how to get a working bootable USB boot disk for DOS using Fedora 12. I needed the dos boot disk to flash my motherboard BIOS as it did not support linux for updating the bios. Thought I'd put the steps involved to help other people who wanted to do something similar. The steps outlined here are for a Fedora 12 system. You should be able to extrapolate the minor changes that may be required for other linux distributions. All commands listed below to be typed in on a command prompt, logged in as root. Here goes...

I can't get Ubuntu 10.04 to boot for install (to my desktop), it displays the logo then hangs for about a minute and displays the alert dialouge saying "Boot disk error."I've tried multiple CD-Rom drives, burned from multiple computers, with both the desktop and server downloads. I'm down about 10 CDs and 2 DVDs here I've checked their integrity (md5) as well as checked the disk integrity from another computer (laptop) and everything passed. I got xUbuntu to install effortlessly, so I don't know what's causing the problem for Ubuntu. I can even look at the contents of the Ubuntu Server CD from within xUbuntu -- so, I know the disk really should work.
My system specs are pretty basic:
2 x Xeon 2.0Ghz
Tyan S2720 Motherboard
2 Gig (4x512) ECC PC266 RAM

why xUbuntu worked and regular Ubuntu won't, and/or maybe what I can do to fix this?
I am thinking of using flash drives to boot linux image files instead of iso files. I remember reading in the past that booting off USB flash drives were sometimes problematic -- and I don't know if they're still are. I want to know from your personal experience what type and brand of flash drive has work for you in creating a bootable flash image.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Vostro 1400 with the Nvidia GPU running ubuntu 10.04. There is a problem with the GPU and dell has recommended that you upgrade your BIOS. I have the executable that can run from either dos or windows. The problem is, I can't boot the system long enough before the screen goes blank on me, my option is to boot from a USB disk to a dos command prompt and then execute the update. I have the file, I just need instructions on how to create a bootable dos disk using a USB pendrive.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've tried installing UNR on a 1GB flash drive in the past, and on two occasions it completely broke due to lack of disk space. When I say broke, it was when I was trying to install or upgrade packages, it said it ran out of disk space, everything slowed right down, and in the end I had to restart. I was put into a recovery shell and after poking around for about 30 minutes, gave up. Then reinstalled.
Now my shiny new 4GB flash drive is split into two sections, one for documents (1.9GB) and one for the installation+persistency file (1.9GB). I went about updating the UNR system, adding software I need (some of which is quite big, anti-virus software, lyx etc), and quickly found the old warning message: disk space low. hastily make some free space (apt-get clean, delete a big firefox cache), and post this message. My questions:how do I find out how much disk space is left on this 1.9GB partition - specifically the persistency file? I've tried disk usage analyzer, also du -h, but can't really understand it. I want to be able to see ahead of time when I am short of disk space. I would like to switch to using XFCE instead of gnome for speed and disk space. Is this possible? What is the best way to switch, without risking maxing-out disk space and crippling the system again? is there are way to take a snapshot of the whole partition? I would like to back it up in case it goes haywire again. Would I just want to copy the persistency file, that's it?
I've an HP DL380 G6 server, SAS hot swappable hdds connected with Smart Array P212 raid controller. I've configured RAID5 and installing RHEL 4.4 in the server. But its not detecting the hdds, i m suspecting that the OS doesn't have the driver for raid controller. I've downloaded the driver disk for the above controller from HP's site. The problem is the server does not have any fdd controller integrated on board, is there any way to use usb pendrives as driver disk during linux installation.
View 8 Replies View RelatedBack in Febuary, my wife bought a Toshiba Satilite from Wal-Mart and a few days ago the hard drive got toasted. So now I'm using an 8gig usb drive as the boot drive. I also have 2 other flash drives for downloads and such but overall I am very pleased.
I'm running 11.04 32 bit and was wandering if 64 bit made a difference. I've got 4 gigs of ddr3. It's slow to boot, but once it's running, it's faster then Windows 7. Very nice.
Is there anything I should chage, use, since I'm running it off a flash drive??

My laptop boot up time increased considerably (10 seconds) after allocating a virtual drive for virtualbox guest. The guest installation did not work so i removed it along with the virtual disk. Now everytime when i boot to ubuntu, after inputting my password in the login screen, it takes much longer to load the system. And during the loading time the disk activity indicator light blinks indicating the harddisk is actually busy loading the system.
I decided to search around for a possible answer and force reprofiling ureadahead does the trick Now boot time is back to what it used to be
a friend of mine just given me an old 2004 IBM NetVista 8305 desktop and suggested to use Linux Ubuntu which is something new to me. So i installed it via USB memory stick & it works. After installation of the OS I am impressed with functionality & speed. when i conect the external hard drive via usb it doesn't show & i tried my usb flash disc it showed the same problem. I tried both disk in my laptop (Windows XP) & it works.

I will have Windows 7 as Drive 1 and Linux as Drive 2.I would like to not touch Drive 1 at all NO grub or other boot-loader. My old system I used a floppy drive as a boot disk.This worked if floppy was inserted: It booted grub giving me the choice of Windows(drive 1)or Linux(drive 2). Before showing me this message i tryed to uninstall the Xubuntu inside from windows xp because several problems showed up after installing Xubuntu. I have plugged the flash drive into a convenient front panel USB connector, right next to where the floppy drive is plugged in. I used the USB Startup Disk Creator to copy a disk file containing Ubuntu 9.04 Live CD onto the flash drive, then I used install-mbr on that drive. I can use the usual tools such as nautilis to examine the contents of the flash drive, and for fdisk -l I get:

which seems to say that the flash drive is bootable. I am suspecting that the problem is in the mother board and/or BIOS. The BIOS is set up to boot in the following order: CDROM, removable device, first hard disk. I thought that "removable device" included USB drives but the system seems to ignore that drive. There are lots of USB connectors in this system. There is a keyboard, a mouse , a loudspeaker set, a floppy drive, and the aforementioned USB flash drive plugged into various USB connectors on both the front and back sides of the cabinet.
Would it be possible, and would it make sense, to copy the whole utuntu file system to a portable flash drive, and then plug it into another computer and run ubuntu on that computer?

I have tried several times, but always had the same disappointing result. It looks like when UNetBootin goes through the process of putting it on the flash drive, it completely skips aking it bootable. Any suggestions? Maybe it is just UNetBootin.

A few months ago I installed ubuntu to a USB flash drive (Patriot 16GB) and was able to successfully boot off it, and everything was running fine. Then all of a sudden I noticed that the root filesystem was read-only, and I saw errors in the kernel log:

I tried reading the drive to see if there was a problem with the drive itself:

But the strange thing is that if I put that usb stick in a different linux server, I'm able to read the whole drive. If I run fsck, it fixes a bunch of errors, but when I put the drive back in the original PC it will work for a while and then fail with the same type of I/O error (not at the same offset though). I had this same problem occur on a different USB stick in the same server, I had thought it was bad media so I replaced it, but now the same problem is happening on a different usb drive. I have backups of the data, but I would really like to figure out what is causing this before I throw in the towel and buy a new PC.
After many failed attempts, I finally got Ubuntu on my Flash Drive (16gb). This was completed by downloading Ubuntu Desktop Edition (ubuntu.com), and using The Universal USB Installer to put the .iso on my Flash Drive.
When I try to boot my PC from the flash drive, I get a black screen saying...
"No DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found! Boot:"
I am trying to install Xubuntu from a flash drive on my PC. I used UNetBootin to get it on my flash drive. When it boots up I get to the Pre Splash screen and I choose Install Xubuntu, it goes to the Xubuntu Splash screen and just hangs there and hangs and hangs. Even if I click Try before Install, it just hangs.

I have been playing around with a Ubunto 10.04 live cd (32bit) on my mac. I want to be able to boot this OS (or similar) on my Mac, and on any other computer (PC or Mac). I also want it to remember changes and files. From looking around this is possible from a USB (with a Casper RW loop file I think). I have used the Live CD to create a bootable flash drive, which works on PC's but not my mac. Using these instructions: [URL] I was able to get my Mac to see the Linux at boot but once I clicked the Tux icon it would hang/ freeze. I let it sit for 10+ min and nothing happened. I started over (with a fresh formatting) and got the same results. I have reformatted the flash drive and am ready to try over. I think that I am goofing up in terminal steps as I am not use to doing that. After the last step in the terminal I get an error, something like invalid number or similar, it is not the one mentioned in the instructions.
I know that this for advanced users, I am not yet but working that way. I an a (retired) power windows user, moderate Mac user and a new Linux user. I want to learn which is why I am asking. I am not in a spot to install Linux directly on my Mac, so I I am seeking help to do it on a flash drive. I want the ability to run off any computer and I see this as I way to get there.
I have a 2GB usb flash drive and I wanted to boot a linux distro from it. My dilemma is that I'm having a hard time balancing size with quality.I've been going the virtual route so far in my linux studies but the variety with hardware is so limited.
