I'm try to install XUbuntu 10.10 (AMD64) on a Pc, when I set the language, and press Enter on "Try XUbuntu without installing", appears the Xubuntu logos and remain fixed for many hours without giving error... same problem with Ubuntu and Kubuntu.
I try to set acpi=off and noapic but i don't resolved the problem..
I was thinking of creating an extremely minimal version of Xubuntu using XFCE. My opening questions are: Should I go with mini.iso or the Xubuntu Alternate Install CD (or the Ubuntu one)? If so, which one? What additional packages will I need to make the hardware accessible and fully functional? All I can think of so far would be sound (I'd like to stay away from PulseAudio if possible, it wreaks havoc with my computer), my webcam, and the memory card slot, if additional packages are needed for it?What other "core" packages should I include in this list? Should I include Synaptic, or other packages, and why?What do I need to take into consideration, since this is both a directly- and battery-powered computer?

i installed Xubuntu on my system having a dual boot with Xubuntu and windows xp but when i select to boot on Xubuntu it freezes and gets a message saying that the file hal.dll in system32 cant be found. View 1 Replies View RelatedHaving problems installing Xubuntu 9.04 to my Dell Latitude CPi (old, I know, but available...). Problem is that the CDROM is not working right and the BIOS doesn't support boot from USB so I can't do a complete live CD install via the CDROM or USB.What I'd like to do instead is install the ISO to the HD and run the install from that HD. Even with the CDROM problems I am able to load the Live CD installer from CDROM.
With that I think the best option will be to extract the ISO files to the HD (attach to another computer and extract to a FAT32 partition, then replace HD back in the latitude) then direct the liveCD bootloader to find the install files on the HD. Unfortunately I don't know the necessary commands to pass to the bootloader.
I remembered the last time I use wubi, I can install Xubuntu from local ISO image.
and today, when trying to install Xubuntu, wubi trying to download Xubuntu ISO. there is no option to choose local ISO image.
I've tried to put Xubuntu ISO in the same folder as wubi installer, and close internet connection... both not works...

I am trying to install Linux on a 12-year-old PC with an AMD Pentium II equivalent and with 128Mb RAM. Xubuntu 10.04 won't install because the kernel requires "cmov" but the PC's processor doesn't have it. There are loads of posts on the Internet about this but I have not found any listings of Linux distros that don't need cmov other than TinyMe, which I shall try installing.
There is no hope of my being able to use the command line to replace the kernel version or for any such fix -I am just too new to it all. nice-looking distro that should install that doesn't look too old and that has a good set of features?

I just recently installed Xubuntu 9.10 on my old acer Aspire 3000. Previously I was running Debian 5. Something it was great and all but I wanted to try out the "New Hotness" that is Xubuntu. The install went flawless and as far as Linux distro's go this is by far the most impressive. However, I have this problem with my USB storage devices not mounting. I've been all over google, in multiple irc rooms asking questions, and I cant seem to get anywhere. I can mount the devices manually with mount -t auto /dev/sdb1 /mountpoint. They mount themselves when I plug them in.
How do I install SDL (and other libraries) onto my dual-boot (XP/Xubuntu) computer? With only what came on the Xubuntu disk, I am able to play Oolite at what seems to be 1000 FPS, and Torcs at about 70 FPS.

However I have no idea how to get them. I've tried aptitude install ia32-libs-libnss3 like it says on the wiki but it just tells me that it can't find ia32-libs-libnss3. I've also tried aptitude install libnss3.so but it gives me the same error. I'm running amd64 Lenny 5.0.5. What should I do?

View 3 Replies View RelatedFor whatever reason, I cannot for the life of me install server amd64 on my server machine. I have a quad-core phenom 1st gen. USB/CD/HD, it doesn't matter what media its from. It randomly freezes on unpacking or configuring, the steps after configuring the network. If I shutdown, I can sometimes get further, or sometimes its shorter. I can't have it connected to the internet when installing or it goes bonkers. I have tried most of the fixes suggested around the forums, to no avail.
Now here is the crazy thing, I installed Ubuntu 64 Desktop with no problems. So for now, I will continued to install desktop and using tasksel to change it to a server.Oh BTW, I just found out installing desktop works, but I have had this server install problem since Gutsy. The 32bit version installs just fine.

I have a Asus Sabertooth P67 motherboard with built in ethernet card, I cant find any drivers for linux, I've tried google, Asus support page etc, but can't anything that says it will work with my computer, just a alot of windows drivers.
where I can find the drivers? Or if there's another way to solve the problem. When installing Debian i could choose between different drivers but no one worked, I've also tried with my motherboard CD but there was just windows drivers...

I'm on Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit with Gigabyte GA-k8n51gmf-9 with AMD 64. what is the advantage of Cool'n'Quiet driver.
There's a certain program I'm trying to run that will only work with the 32-bit version of a certain library - the 64-bit version included in the repository won't work for it. I found an i386 .deb package online (made for ubuntu but it should work with regular debian), but when I try to install it, it says incorrect architecture, use amd64 version instead.
How can I force it to accept the i386 version of this package?
I can't manage to install Packet Tracer 5 on Lucid 10.04 amd64. I've tried both the binary and the tar.gz with the help provided on the old amd64 forum but it's still tell me that the the package architecture (i386) does not match the system (amd64). Do someone have any idea other than switching to the 32-bits version?

videos videos work great, but unfortunately, when i try to access videos on hulu.com, i receive this error message: "we're sorry but we're unable stream this video to your system. this may be due to an adobe software limitation on 64-bit linux systems."

Xubuntu 9.10 just won't install--the screen goes blank and the computer locks up, with either the regular or the alternate install CD. I gather that this isn't an unknown issue in 9.10, so I'm installing 9.04 instead and I'll just wait until 10.04 comes out. Xubuntu 9.04 installs and runs like a charm.This is an HP Pavilion ze4125, with 768MB of RAM and an ATI Radeon IGP 320M video card. When I enter "sudo su -c "lspci | grep VGA", it returns "01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility U1".
So what I want to do now is install the best driver I can so I can make the most of the video card. XP let me use any number of high resolutions, but the Display icon in Xubuntu tops out at 1024x768. EnvyNG doesn't offer. anything compatible with my video card. I've tried installing ati-driver-installer-9-3-x86.x86_64 and ati-driver-installer-9-12-x86.x86_64, but both say "Extraction failed" (I was running them with gdm stopped).So, is there something specific I should be doing to get access to higher resolutions, or a driver I need to install?
