General :: Gpsim Has No Gui On Xubuntu?
Apr 29, 2011
I just installed gpsim on Xubuntu Xfce 4 using:
sudo apt-get install gputils
sudo apt-get install gpsim
No problems with the install.
However, when trying to launch gpsim by typing gpsim on the command line, does not launch a GUI. It has been a long time since using gpsim/linux, but I am sure I remember gpsim having a GUI.

I was thinking of creating an extremely minimal version of Xubuntu using XFCE. I have a Dell Mini 9, a netbook that uses a wireless-g card requiring bcmwl-kernel-source to work. What I would like to do is use either the alternate CD or mini.iso minimal install file to perform a command line install-style installation of the system. So far, what I am thinking (from reading this [url].... article:
HTML Code:
http:[url].....is to start off with these packages to begin with:
xorg
slim (if possible with 9.10, unsure if it is still available. in short, i want to use a lightweight display manager)
xfce4
xfce4-goodies
xubuntu-default-settings
bcmwl-kernel-source
aptitude
My opening questions are: Should I go with mini.iso or the Xubuntu Alternate Install CD (or the Ubuntu one)? If so, which one? What additional packages will I need to make the hardware accessible and fully functional? All I can think of so far would be sound (I'd like to stay away from PulseAudio if possible, it wreaks havoc with my computer), my webcam, and the memory card slot, if additional packages are needed for it?What other "core" packages should I include in this list? Should I include Synaptic, or other packages, and why? What do I need to take into consideration, since this is both a directly- and battery-powered computer?

the screen is still on but it's like the computer is going idle or something, It makes watching tv shows/movies pretty hard. I have to constantly keep moving the mouse. I have a pentium 4 with about 600 megs of ram. Latest version of Xubuntu.I went into screensaver options and power management options. It's set to two hours before the screensaver comes on, and never to put the screen idle but the screen seems to do it every 20-30 minutes.I'm not entirely sure where to look now, i don't think there could be anything wrong with the hardware, otherwise moving the mouse wouldn't make the screen come back on.

I have a simple Xubuntu server at my house that I connected an extra external hard drive too. What I would like to do is setup a backup system for my computers to backup to this hard drive. How would I go about setting up the drive to be shared on Xubuntu? I would prefer commands as I use PuTTY to manage the server.

Triple booting. Windows 7 Evaluation, Xubuntu 9.10 and I just installed Absolute. Xubuntu uses Grub 2. I was going to do three things. Install Lilo to Absolutes /boot, go inot Xubuntu and reinstall Grub 2 to /boot and then just install GAG boot loader to load all three. Instead I was distracted and installed Lilo to the MBR by accident, which overwrote GRUB 2.
I can boot into Absolute fine and Windows 7 fine but the problem I am having is with Grub 2. The Xubuntu Live CD is not working for some reason, I mean it won't boot. I downloaded it twice and burnt it to disc both times. I am not sure why at this point.
So how do I add Xubuntu 9.10 to Lilo. If I try and do it manually or any other way it starts to boot Absolute instead and then freezes, even though I am pointing it to my Xubuntu partition. I am leaving something out. It has been a long time since I used Lilo and even then I was just as clueless.

Having problems installing Xubuntu 9.04 to my Dell Latitude CPi (old, I know, but available...). Problem is that the CDROM is not working right and the BIOS doesn't support boot from USB so I can't do a complete live CD install via the CDROM or USB.What I'd like to do instead is install the ISO to the HD and run the install from that HD. Even with the CDROM problems I am able to load the Live CD installer from CDROM.
With that I think the best option will be to extract the ISO files to the HD (attach to another computer and extract to a FAT32 partition, then replace HD back in the latitude) then direct the liveCD bootloader to find the install files on the HD. Unfortunately I don't know the necessary commands to pass to the bootloader.

I'm using Xubuntu 10.10 and trying desperately to connect to my wireless network. I have tried wicd and network manager when I crashed wicd. First of all I would get a "bad password" message, then I progressed to a "cannot assign IP" now I can connect to the network and see my netbook on my routers GUI but I can't browse. I have an ASUS 901 (bought with Xandros installed as standard). I'm not sure if I am making progress or not because half of the time, I only have a vague idea of what I am doing.

I've been running Xubuntu 9.04 for the past couple of months but have difficulty installing my Canon MX-860 wireless printer. Everything else works perfectly and connects wirelessly to internet. Since I run a couple of other Win based computers, printing from the Toshiba 1100 laptop hasn't been a problem. It would be an advantage. I tried to install the latest Xubuntu distro on the Toshiba and it installed but could not connect to the wireless Atheros card. Where should I start? get Distro 10.04 working first or try and install the printer with the existing distro?

I am trying to install Linux on a 12-year-old PC with an AMD Pentium II equivalent and with 128Mb RAM. Xubuntu 10.04 won't install because the kernel requires "cmov" but the PC's processor doesn't have it. There are loads of posts on the Internet about this but I have not found any listings of Linux distros that don't need cmov other than TinyMe, which I shall try installing.
There is no hope of my being able to use the command line to replace the kernel version or for any such fix -I am just too new to it all. nice-looking distro that should install that doesn't look too old and that has a good set of features?

I just recently installed Xubuntu 9.10 on my old acer Aspire 3000. Previously I was running Debian 5. Something it was great and all but I wanted to try out the "New Hotness" that is Xubuntu. The install went flawless and as far as Linux distro's go this is by far the most impressive. However, I have this problem with my USB storage devices not mounting. When I plug them in they show up and everything looks like its about to work when I get this: [URL]
A quick jaunt over to dmesg:
Code:
#
[ 2950.184072] usb 1-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 6
#
[ 2950.320178] usb 1-3: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

#
[ 2950.326513] usb-storage: device found at 6
#
[ 2950.326519] usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
#
[ 2955.324403] usb-storage: device scan complete .....
I've been all over google, in multiple irc rooms asking questions, and I cant seem to get anywhere. I can mount the devices manually with mount -t auto /dev/sdb1 /mountpoint. They mount themselves when I plug them in.

When I start up my computer Xubuntu is asking me to login (which is strange as I have login disabled). Then, when I do enter my password, it is accepted and after a few screen changes I am returned to the login screen. (I know the password is correct as the login screen informs you immediately if you enter it incorrectly.) Also, I can see that my display settings have been changed--the monitor resolution is wrong--my cursor is way big as are buttons, text etc..

I had been using Xubuntu 9.10 successfully for some time. Recently, however, I tried to boot Xubuntu, and instead of reaching the login screen, a "GRUB" interface appeared. The title was "GNU GRUB VERSION 1.97~beta4"
Below that, there were a few instructions describing the use of the Tab key and a blank command line interface beginning with "sh:grub7". Before this started occurring, my computer would turn on and then display a menu to choose the OS. If I selected Xubuntu, a few lines would flash by, and the login screen would appear. My computer is a Dell XPS M1530 laptop. The operating systems installed are Windows Vista Ultimate and Xubuntu 9.10. The Xubuntu was installed using a Wubi installation.
As far as I remember, I did not make any changes that may have caused this. The only significant event that did occur was a power outage, but my computer was not plugged in nor on at this time.
If everything works normally, how would I boot Wubi Xubuntu from the GRUB interface? Are there any other solutions to this problem?

I am using xubuntu and there are a few types of files on website that instead of downloading and saving and then opening with emacs, I would rather when the radio button choice comes up say open with emacs. I am using xubuntu with xfce, and there is no line for a command to be entered as some ubuntu editions have. In the choice of changing the opening program from mousepad to something else, it says search and allows to navigate to find a program, but I cant find emacs anywhere not in etc/ or elsewhere. So where is its executable to direct the program chooser to?

I have some video files that I want to watch from my Win7 partition. Also, have they fixed the login screen issues with Ubuntu 9.10 yet? Mine will never log in and this time I simply got lucky and it worked.

I use Xubuntu 10.10 on a the Asus Eee PC 900 netbook. After using Ubuntu Desktop, UNR, Lubuntu and PcLinuxOS. So you can easily say I tried a lot of Linux Distros.
Now my problem is that I've tried to run a .exe file with WINE. But Xubuntu gives the error that I can't run the file because it is not marked as a executable. Now I saw somewhere in the Ubuntu Documentation that you have to change the permissions with Properties>Permissions. But in Xubuntu I can' t make the file executable, as in Ubuntu.

I have an MSI netbook with a non-functioning version of Ubuntu (the GUI is GNOME, and currently not working) and I'm trying to replace that with xubuntu. For whatever reason, I cannot get the system to mount the USB key, which currently has nothing on it except for the xubuntu .iso file. My computer is encrypted with sda5_crypt, which comes up and demands a password just after the MSI boot screen. I assume I need to press some kind of key before the sda5_crypt screen, but I'm not sure which button that is. There is an option of pressing F11 for "boot menu", and from there I can select "flash card", but it doesn't do me any good to do that.
