I have ran into a permissions problem. It seems that any file I have created with Fedora I can browse to in Firefox. I cannot browse to files that I have downloaded from the internet or copied locally across our network. I changed file permissions to 755 and 777 for these files. I even thought that maybe it was the php file content that was causing the issue. So, I copied the file content from file 2 into file 1. File 1 was the file I could always browse to since I created it in Fedora. I could still browse to file 1 after it had file 2's content.
I look at the permissions and they appear the same for both files. I am not sure why I cannot open the other files. I downloaded phpMyAdmin. I cannot hit any of these files in a browser. I also copied some files from a a backup location we have internally. I cannot browse to any of these files either. I used chmod 777 filename. Even after doing that I could not hit any of the files. I moved the files into my document root directory ( /var/www/html ) and I still cannot browse to these files.
Using SUSE 11 with Gnome. I mounted a CIFS share from a Windows server as /mnt/win. With the file browser, I can browse to file system/mnt/win and then the files and folders of the Windows share come up fine and I can open them. When I use the file browser to browse to network, the server hosting this share is listed. Then I browse to that server and it lists no shares (nothing at all). I can't go any further than the server. Is there a separate authentication necessary for the file browser to see this share from the network place?
I was thinking of creating an extremely minimal version of Xubuntu using XFCE. I have a Dell Mini 9, a netbook that uses a wireless-g card requiring bcmwl-kernel-source to work. What I would like to do is use either the alternate CD or mini.iso minimal install file to perform a command line install-style installation of the system. So far, what I am thinking (from reading this [url].... article:
HTML Code:
http:[url].....is to start off with these packages to begin with:
xorg slim (if possible with 9.10, unsure if it is still available. in short, i want to use a lightweight display manager) xfce4 xfce4-goodies xubuntu-default-settings bcmwl-kernel-source aptitude
My opening questions are: Should I go with mini.iso or the Xubuntu Alternate Install CD (or the Ubuntu one)? If so, which one? What additional packages will I need to make the hardware accessible and fully functional? All I can think of so far would be sound (I'd like to stay away from PulseAudio if possible, it wreaks havoc with my computer), my webcam, and the memory card slot, if additional packages are needed for it?What other "core" packages should I include in this list? Should I include Synaptic, or other packages, and why? What do I need to take into consideration, since this is both a directly- and battery-powered computer?

I have installed apache using the appropriate 'yum' commands.I didn't experience any problems during the installation. My problem is that I am not able to see any php file I created myself (I have installed php too). The only php file I can see is the one I created using this:
Code: su -c 'echo "<?php phpinfo(); ?>" > /var/www/html/index.php' Then I am able to see the information from the above file.

I simply want to move files between my jailbroken iphone 3G and my Karma desktop. Is there an easy way to achieve this. I don't really want to use Virtualbox with Win installed into it and thereafter Itunes.I don't need or want to sync anything - just move the odd files around.I installed ifuse but all I can see is the DCIM i.e picture folder when I connect it to the desktop.Right now I have to email the file to the iphone and save it like that but this is just a workaround

I've recently been using amarok and liked it a lot. I unchecked the show system tray in configuration, restarted amarok and then checked it again. Now amarok crashes whenever I go into configuration or browse through local files. I have tried reinstalling and deleting the directory ~/.kde/share/apps but no use.
I have 2 machines both using U 11.04, one of them being Studio. I have tried to connect them together (via a modem/router of course) to browse files but I can't connect. I get error messages. I've installed samba and everything.
I'm trying to install Fallout 1 by Interplay. I have the .ISO of the game.
I've mounted it to a directory I created (/home/temp), using Gmount
But, when I use the GUI, and right click on the "install.exe" and choose Open With Wine. It just opens a terminal, than promptly closes it.
So, I tried to run it in a terminal. I went to the directory where the ISO is mounted, and used the command
wine install.exe
and it gives me:
err:dosmemOSMEM_MapDosLayout Need full access to the first megabyte for DOS mode
Also, when I mount the .ISO using Gmount, I get the error;
An error occured Murrine configuration option "scrollbar_color" is no longer supported and will be ignored.
I can also open the autorun.exe using wine. But when I click the install button in the autorun menu, it says I have to install DirectX. When I click yes, it gives me the generic windows crash.
"The program your using has encountered a problem and needs to close. yada yada yada."
Choosing 'no' when prompted to install DirectX, just gives me a blank screen, with no response.
Push ESC three times, and my desktop appears again, and everything is responding.
How to play audio video files. When i try to run these files it says no suitable plug in found. What should i do. I am using xubuntu 11.04. Should i need to download vlc media player. I am completely newcomer to Linux so try to answer in very simple way.
I'd like to put a few MP3s on it but I'm not able to connect to the phone via USB on my xubuntu box to drop files onto it. It works on my company computer (Windows XP) so I know it's not a problem with the phone.
I'm still somewhat of an ubuntu noob so it may be a quick fix that I have overlooked/don't understand yet. Once I plug the phone in to the box, I tell Android to enable USB storage and mount the drive. Here's the error I get afterwards:
Quote:
Failed to mount "3G Removable Volume".
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdc1, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so.
Here's the settings set in Storage Device Manager:
I had a 9.04 install that was working well within the network. I had a lot of shares setup from a windows 2003 server. Unfortunately, I had a hardware failure and had to upgrade. Also unfortunately, 9.04 would not install on the new hardware (MB/CPU/RAM), but I was able to install 9.10.Now my problem is I can not browse the windows network. I installed samba and followed the instructions found here
When I go to network through nautilus, I see a windows network icon, when I open it, there is nothing.I am at a loss and really need this problem resolved (work production computer)
My centos 5.6 firewall server shares its Internet connection with my windows machine behind it. After the required settings, the windows machine can ping valid ip addresses but it cannot browse valid url (despite the fact that DNS is set for it).

I cannot execute "untrusted" files/programs on xubuntu but I could on ubuntu? I'm admin but cannot edit permissions. I tried opening it with wine but still get the execute error and looked everywhere for a solution and can't find one.
I'm having some trouble installing Xubuntu on an old Compaq PC with 512 MB RAM. The Live CD installs without a hitch, but when I restart the system to boot from the hard drive it locks up just after POST
I upgraded today my Xubuntu to v 10.10, but I have a serious problem. Everything was fime till the system asked for rebooting but never did. I have actuallu a black screen with a white square terminal-like. It displays jbogdani@bdus~$ but I can not type on it! It is frozen!Nothing works, no services (ssh, apache, etc.), no GUIs no terminal! The only server that is working is samba! How can I get my computer working back without terminal? What is happening? Is v10.10 so unstable and unsecure?
I recently installed Ubuntu yesterday and finally got all the settings right so that it would run rather decently on my computer. I have rather limited RAM resource, 192MB to be exact and i would have preferred to have installed Xubuntu from the start, but kept getting errors when using Wubi in Windows XP.
So here i am, with Ubuntu 10.04, wanting to upgrade to Xubuntu 10.10....but not knowing what to do. I'm currently installing the desktop environment for Xubuntu via the Software Manager but I'm not sure if this is what I'm supposed to do..
I am attempting to install Xubuntu via Wubi on an old HP e-Vectra PC. It only has 126mb of ram. Wubi installed successfully but when I get to the part where you finish the installation after you restart I get a black screen after the wubi 11.04 screen. I really don't want to upgrade the ram in this computer If I don't have to due to the difficulty of doing so. Is there any way I can get it to work?
