View 2 RepliesI downloaded the disc1 iso from [url] and ran it through sha1sum and got 5063ec... (the exact digest is in the virtual console, so I can't copy and paste). But the sum shown in [url] is different, so I removed the iso from my file-system and re-downloaded it. I ran the second download through sha1sum and got the same (wrong) digest as before: 5063ec...
Now, I may not understand fully how sha1 works, but I'm pretty sure if the faulty digest was wrong because of a download error, it would be -very- unlikely that I would get the same wrong digest twice. What is going on here? Is the error server-side or something? Or do I just have terrible luck, or do I not fully understand sha1 sums? Or maybe sha1sum isn't the right command to run?
I have downloaded both versions of Fedora 11 (Gnome and KDE) to iso files on my hard disk - in Windows XP. I then tried the verification procedure advised in [URL]... section 3.1. I have successfully installed and run hashcalc, with the SHA1 option, and got the following results:
- for the Gnome version : 795b52b3c7b16eba6f2cae055ec894d8648d8095
- for the KDE version : 38ef6c97e29803add28d40add05aa025b6f4c92b.
But I can't find any SHA1SUM files to give me the correct character sequences against which to compare the said results.
I understand that md5sum had some faults where it would get the same checksum on 2 different files. What exactly are the benefits of sha256sum compared to sha1sum?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to replicate the behavior of the sha1sum executable in some java code, however, in the process I've discovered that sha1sum appears to behave differently given the same input in two scenarios.
Assume input of '12345' without the single quotes and with no newline.
If I put this data into a file (file1) and run sha1sum from the command line:
However, if I do this, I get a different result:
Using the apache commons-codec jar, I'm able to read in file1, get it's contents, and perform a .shahex() on the content and get the first result. However, I need to get the second result (due to legacy code) and I can't figure out why sha1sum is behaving differently, or what grep is doing to the input.
The system is running CentOS 5.4 with sha1sum 5.97
Is there anyway to make a hash (or similar), of a folder of files, for data integrity purposes?
I tried with sha1sum, but it cant do it.
Is it possible with some other software?

View 1 Replies View RelatedJust to reiterate on the title, the installation of Fedora 10 i386 (DVD) on a 32bit PC. Is failing on me after the media check (whether or not I do it), so not even making it to the language selection. Currently running a nvidia AGP video card was previously using an ati PCI card but swapping has done little to help.
The only argument that lets me passed this point is noprobe, which then fails a bit later as it can't pick up the install media. I've also tried a live CD which seems to be a bit hit and miss as to whether or not it even loads. It then either fails to even let me run the install to HDD or it comes up some error about failures in python code (Don't have the exact error as the last few times haven't even booted). Below is a couple of errors I get from the standard installer

View 2 Replies View RelatedI did the "yum update" today, the process was doing well but, the follow error appears:

Look:

I've been trying to update Fedora 15 for weeks. I always end up with a transaction error and the update stalls. The error reads: GPG keys listed for RPM Fusion for Fedora Rawhide-free repository are installed but they are not correct for this package. Check that the correct key urls are configured for this repository.
This is far too involved for a linux newbie, I think my only option is to reformat and reinstall. This is so frustrating, there are 250 MB of updates available that I can't access.
I am trying to upgrade RH9 to F10. I have downloaded dvd iso image i386. The SHA1 integrity check passes. The installer fails media check due to "errors". I did an independent verification of the DVD and zero errors found. Download was from Fedora's own torrent, so files should be verified anyway. If I bypass the media check I get the message : Running anaconda 11.4.1.62 the Fedora system installer - please wait.....

I upgraded the computer of my son from kubuntu 9.10 (I think) to Kubuntu 10 and, once the system rebooted I got the following error message:

Could not start ksmserver, check your installation When I press "OK" I am back at the login screen.
Two questions:1) What is a ksmserver and: 2)How the hell do i solve this problem?
I am new to Debian but not Linux-based systems. I have been experimenting a lot with Debian Lenny/Squeeze. I am growing more comfortable each day with the Debian design. Yet there remain many unexplored areas. I am creating a migration check list. Things to check, prepare, or reconfigure when moving from one Linux-based system to Debian.
I have a good computer background and my current check list probably is fairly good. Yet I would appreciate input and opinions from experienced Debian users of things to watch in such a migration. Login defs, passwd/group files, different directory locations, keymaps, services and daemons, etc. I am not too concerned with the desktop as I plan to stick with KDE 3.5 for a while and I can basically move those settings across.
I want to put check menu & check list in utility dialog.i dont know how i do this

View 1 Replies View RelatedSo I closed out X with ctrl+alt+backspace, and when I did startx it showed the Nvidia splash screen like usual, then shows for just a second that loading splash screen that KDE does. Then a little box pops into the top left corner that says "Could not start kdeinit4. Please check installation." I hit okay on the box, it takes me back to the terminal. I try again, same result. I reboot. Same result. So I use xwmconfig to change to enlightenment, which boots up fine. So I ctrl+alt+backspace out and retry KDE again, with the same problem.
This is the first time I've closed out KDE in over a week, so I guess its possible that anything I've done over that time may have somehow broken it. I hadn't noticed any problems til now. The only reason I did it this time was because I'd changed the KDE plasma theme and I wanted to watch the new one boot up. I'm typing on the same computer and the same Slackware installation right now, just running E instead of KDE.
I don't know to check if my system is 64 bit or not? My dual boot Window Vista is 64 bit, but what about the fedora?
