Dec 27, 2010I upgraded the computer of my son from kubuntu 9.10 (I think) to Kubuntu 10 and, once the system rebooted I got the following error message:

Yet there remain many unexplored areas. I am creating a migration check list. Things to check, prepare, or reconfigure when moving from one Linux-based system to Debian.
I have a good computer background and my current check list probably is fairly good. Yet I would appreciate input and opinions from experienced Debian users of things to watch in such a migration. Login defs, passwd/group files, different directory locations, keymaps, services and daemons, etc. I am not too concerned with the desktop as I plan to stick with KDE 3.5 for a while and I can basically move those settings across.

Feb 26, 2010I feel a little awkward in this Control Panel: first time user. I installed the latest version of Ubuntu yesterday. All went smooth until I got to installing printer drivers. The setup went online and my system froze...everything froze. I had to do a hard reset. The printer installation went smooth the second time. So far this is the only problem I've had. No details needed. What I was wondering is if there's any way to check if the hard reset did any damage.

After the installation, I would like to know what the configuration I used for XXXXX's installation. Maybe some dependencies (for example, A,B,C...) were not found so that XXXXX was installed without depending on A,B,C.... However, now, I would like XXXXX depend on A,B,C... They were set up some time ago and the boot will not proceed unless I manually enter "S" to skip. I have removed folders for these disks that were in /media/... but that didn't solve the problem.

System kept locking up during install, as well as when I run it from the usb, I've since learned. graphics card? I can't log into windows either per the grub loading please wait error 15. I've googled & searched the forums & everything I've tried doesn't work, there were some possible solutions that I don't understand how to do. can't get to a terminal to check or modify anything. Hitting "e" at the boot menu does nothing. I don't know how to do anything from here! Compaq Presario SR5350, 2GB RAM, Dual Core Proc 2150MHz. Dual boot w/Vista, HDD is partitioned separately with Root, Home & swap. Also, sda5 or / has been formatted to ext4, still using grub 1.5.

May 6, 2010I have a Wubi installation, and the upgrade to 10.04 froze. I didn't note down the point at which it froze.
When I tried to reboot, I got the grub screen, and when selecting Ubuntu I get lots of text messages scrolling by, but it freezes at battery check.
The machine boots fine into Vista.
Rather than spend a lot of time trying to figure out what went wrong in the upgrade, my inclination is to delete the Wubi installation from within Windows, and then do a fresh install of 10.04 under Wubi. Is this feasible/sensible?
There are a handful of files I would like to salvage from the prior installation, however. Could I do that with a Live CD since the prior installation was under Wubi?

Aug 23, 2010I downloaded Ubuntu 10.4 netbook edition for my toshiba satellite a105 laptop (windows XP) burned it to a CD, restarted my computer with the disc in drive, pressed f12 at the appropriate time, chose to boot from CD. after sitting for a second i get error PXE-e61 media test failure, check cable. and then it boots XP normally. how do i get around this to install linux!

After the updates and restart I now get the non executable memory error. when I enter
/usr/bin/check-bios-nx --verbose
I am told I have NX capabilities and should go to the bios and enable it. There is nothing in
the bios to enable as far as I can see. So I enter the command

Apr 28, 2011I've just upgraded to Natty. During the upgrade no errors showed. However, when I now boot ubuntu (either recovery mode or normal), the boot process hangs at:
'checking battery state'
I searched for similair problems in this forum, but the solutions in other posts(sudo apt-get update & upgrade etc.) did not help. I'm not sure if it is related or important, but when it hangs, it also shows something like:
'starting automatic crash reporter [fail]'
'not starting jetty'
'saned disabled'
(I can't copy there of course, so it is probably not exactly like this, or in this order...) What can I do to get my ubuntu boot again?
