Oct 29, 2014
freshly installed Debian-netinst, configured internet connection. Pinged Google - all transmitted packets were received, 0% loss.
Yet I am not sure if I have internet connection for what ever package I am trying to install using apt-get install package_name, I receive
E: Unable to locate package package_name
How can I check internet connection from CLI?

I had clicked on the upgrade notification in Update Manager. After 3 hours of downloading, it stopped abruptly. Now when I try, I get a message saying could not download, check internet connection. I am able to visit other sites, and am actually downloading the CD itself without any problem.

In Ubuntu, How can you tell if your connection is being monitored? Have a home system, me and girlfriend are only users. Lately ALLl websites are taking longer to download. She claims her system and bank accounts were compromised. So am wondering if the connection is being monitored. Lots of tools for "windows" to help determine, but what about linux / ubuntu?

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10. My internet connection is an ADSL which I have set up using "pppoeconf". The connection starts at boot up. I can also start it if needed by using "sudo pon dsl-provider" and can stop it by using "poff dsl-provider".Recently I noticed that when I start my computer, there is some program (or programs) which is connecting automatically to the internet and downloading and uploading a lot of data. The data transferred can exceed 200 mb or 300 mb in an hour. I don't know what is being uploaded or downloaded.I know for sure that no file sharing programs like bittorrent clients are started at bootup so it is strange that this much data to be downloaded and uploaded without me sharing files or downloading files explicitly. The update software also does not run by default as I have opted to start it manually.
Is there any application which shows the programs that are connected to any particular port and transmitting and receiving data?In Windows XP I use a program called "What's Running" which clearly lists the programs using the different ports in the local machine and the remote IP addresses that the program is connected to. It also shows which program is transmitting and receiving data at any point in time. Is there any similar program for Linux? My internet connection is a data limited package otherwise I probably would not have bothered.

So I just installed ubuntu from a net install, and updated from the internet and posted on this site through firefox while installing vlc wich just froze at 90%.....
but when I try to add community repos it comes up with errors. And while running a system check it says I have no internet connection...
I'm connected through ethernet on a router wich works with the g5 in the other room running osx, and the pc upstairs running ubuntu meerkat. Now I had this same problem with SUSE 11.1 and worked around it by adding through terminal but I was never able to add from the GUI.

I recently decided that I want to install mplayer on fedora 13. Problem is, everytime I try, a new problem arises. I've tried add/remove software, and it said "package download failed, check internet connection" which doesn't make sense because I'm connected to the internet and my connection is fine. So, then I tried yum install mplayer, that gave me an error.

The router IP is 192.168.1.1. 1 windows laptop that work wireless and wired. 1 debian desktop that work wired and not working wireless. THe problem with the debian desktop is like this: I have a TP-Link TL-WN321G installed and found by lsusb command. I make a wireless connection WPA Personal (just like the router settings) it says i am connected to the wl network but no internet connection. the route command give me this:
[code]....
I tryed with wicd who said that the connection is WEP (and it's not, it is setup to WPA on the router and the network-manager conncetion) and when i try to connect i get bad password. I tryed with network-manager uninstalled and no chance.

I am working on a cross-platform application for Linux ,Apple and Windows, so I have a full tower system with four SATA hard drives that be selected with a switch, so that I can change drives and operating systems at will. -sort of makes me a jack of linux systems, but master of none. It's important to mention this, because it shows the strangeness of the problem as it is isolated to Debian* systems.
So where does debian/ubuntu get it's information to establish a network connection? How do I rectify the problem? I can hardly blame the hardware (RTL8111B), because the problem is isolated to Debian systems.

I don't know how i use the source code. Is there a script somewhere i can just download? And i don't want the LAN connection to be blocked.. only outgoing traffic!!

I followed this guide for my Acer Aspire One A150, and got wireless and suspend working fine:[URL]pendtoRAMThe only problem is that wireless is dead after resuming from suspend. I have to type:/etc/init.d/networking restart and after that everything works just fine and I get internet again. Is there a way to automate that process on resuming from suspend, so that I won`t have to type it manually each time?

I have been using this fresh Debian 8.2 install for 3 days without any network problems.
What I did this morning :
- Booted in my windows partition and rebooted immediately just to remove the system from the sleep state
- Mounted a NTFS hard drive and copied some file to my .wine drive_c
Thats when I noticed that my connection was down.
I verified all the physical layer. My laptop has access to the internet tried to connect on an another router with eht0, changed the wire, nothing worked.
It seems like the interface can't get a dhcp ipv4 address even when I try to force is with dhclient, I get no offer when my laptop works just fine.
- Booted on my windows partition without changing any connection and my internet was working.
- Booted back on debian still not working...

When launching any program (iceweasel, ssh, dropbox) that requires internet connection as a normal user it does not connect.
However if I try launching them as root it does. Sometimes, I have to manually disable/enable wifi and then reboot in order to access Internet, sometimes it works and sometimes it does not.

I recently installed Debian "Squeeze" onto a Thinkpad T420, alongside Windows 7. During the installation Debian was unable to detect my NIC (Intel 82579LM), but otherwise the installation completed normally. I've installed the required e1000e drivers, and added "alias eth0 e1000e" to the modules file. Using lspci I can see that the computer detects the card, but still fails to load the drivers for it.
I'm at a bit of a loss, as this is my first time using Linux. After a bit of searching it looks like the 2.6.38 kernel resolves the issue with this card, so I guess that's my next step.Unfortunately all the installation instructions I've found assume an internet connection. Is there a simple way to update the kernel without a connection, or -even better- an install disc with 2.6.38 so I can start from scratch?

I rebooted my vServer (Debian 8) and it doesn't came back up. Well, I used the rescue console on my server and the server seems to be running fine, except the network was broken. So I tried 'ifconfig' but nothing came up. So I tried to enable my interface with 'ifconfig venet0 up', and now it appears in my ifconfig list
Code: Select allroot@i67svof:/var/www# ifconfig
venet0Â Â Link encap:UNSPECÂ HWaddr 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00Â

     collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
     RX bytes:36463 (35.6 KiB) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)
My HWaddr doesn't look that well :) 'ip addr' prints this result:
Code: Select allroot@i67svof:/var/www# ip addr
1: lo: <LOOPBACK> mtu 65536 qdisc noop state DOWN
  link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
2: venet0: <BROADCAST,POINTOPOINT,NOARP,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN
These are the last lines in /var/log/syslog:
Code: Select allroot@i67svof:/var/www# tail /var/log/syslog

I've installed Debian squeeze using the net installer and while beginning the installation I loaded the 'ppp-udeb' module to connect to the internet for accessing the Debian mirrors during the installation. Now, whenever I boot into Debian, internet connection kicks in automatically. I would want to have control over when to start the internet connection. I don't want it to be triggered during my login.

In one of my customers, the new internet connection have no public IPV4(using GCNAT), only public IPV6.
And there are various services that require external access, like, vpn (openvpn), a java/web system, ssh, rdp(windows).
fileServer(by vpn).
All is running ok in IPV4.Maybe, the solution is a NAT 6to4. We know this is the future, no more public IPV4.

When I make a vpn connection to an openvpn server, I loose the internet connection.
The VPN works all right.
Server config (extract)
Client config
Client route without the VPN connection
client route with VPN connected (internet lost)
Is there anything I can do to the push rule of the servers's config file?

I am using Empathy IM client to access to gadu gadu and to message with my friends. The strange thing that is happening is that I keep on being connected and then disconnected and then connected again even if I am continuously connected to my internet connection (no problem when surfing or using skype for example)It also seems to come only from me because when my girlfriend is using the same gadu gadu on her windows laptop simultaneously, she doesn´t get disconnected (whether when she is at home and using the same connection as I am or when she is outside, meaning that it doesn´t seem to come from the whole gadu gadu network)maybe it has something to do with the ports that gadu gadu is using but it is strange that sometimes it is working for a period of time and then not and then again.

I replaced my motherboard and processor but am keeping my old hard drive without reformatting it. Things work well except that I cannot connect to the internet. I am thinking that I just need to reconfigure the connection to see the new network hardware. I tried /etc/init.d/networking restart but that doesn't do anything. What am I missing? By the way it is a wired connection - not wireless.

Sorry title should have been F13 installation without internet I am having a P4, 1GB ram, 80 GB machine. Since yesterday I am having some funny issues on this machine. i have fedora 12 installed on this machine.
My mouse suddenly stop working, or the cursor changes from pointer type to a line cursor and basicaly the mouse just stops clicking. I am plannning to install fedora 13 on this machine. Have downloaded the 5 iso (
CD images).
Would choosing the option upgrade on existing Linux partition do the job? Is there a chance I loose my data files when the upgrade is done? I dont want to reinstall programs like java, eclipse, tomcat etc that I done in fedora 12. I only intend using the CD's as I dont have a lot of bandwidth and a fast internet connection to use yum.

I recently bougt an Asus N61DA with Windows 7. I decided to install Ubuntu alongside Windows, so I made the Ubuntu CD, just like it said. Then I inserted the CD and restarted the computer. I started the installer (ubuntu 10.10 64-bit) and chose the option where it says "install ubuntu alongside other operating systems", or something like that. So, the installation started, but then I lost the internet connection, and the installation stopped.I re-connected the computer, but the installation still wouldn't continue. I restarted the computer and then nothing happened. I've restarted it several times, but still nothing happens. I've inserted the Windows recovery CD, but it doesn't work
