I've loaded Fedora and must say what a nice OS! But I'm having some issues getting the video working correctly so let me jump right into the issue. The video is very garbled and hard to read. can't seem to find a way to correct what would appear to be a driver issue. Here are a list of things tried:
- display works fine with Ubuntu
- display is clear but is chopped off when using an external monitor from onboard vga slot
The video card is an ATI radeon and the linux drivers from the ATI site don't work with the new images that are out yet.
I've just installed ubuntu 9.04 (had the disc from before) and I'm upgrading to 9.10 of course but I have a question. How do I check that I have the latest drivers installed for everything in my laptop? I'm the kind of person that has that nagging feeling in the back of my head telling me that everything isn't installed perfectly and I need to install my drivers properly (or at least ask).

Well I've been trying to get drivers installed for this card for a few days now and I can't get anything to work. The proprietary drivers for this card don't support the xorg version installed in F14. I've tried mesa and ati drivers but I can't get them to actually work, they both just cause x to crash during startup. I've looked through the threads for ati drivers but they all seem to talk about using the latest catalyst drivers and thus non of them have helped me much.

I have been noticing that it was hard to set up my own NVidia video card, and alot of other people shared the same problem as I had. I have been experimenting with some things, and here's what I did to solve it.
It's fairly easy, anyone can do this. Read and follow these instructions:
Install all updates. Although it seems unimportant, it really is.
Go to [url] and follow the instructions to install the free and nonfree repositories
Go to System > Administration > Add/Remove Software
Search the following: nv
Click everything which has to do with NVidia. Do not check the checkboxes yet, but read the descriptions. If you've found your video card in the description, check the checkbox at the left of the title.
Install the drivers by clicking "Apply" at the bottom of your screen.
After installing, go to Applications > System Tools > nVidia Display Settings
Set the properties of your video card, such as TwinView or higher screen resolutions.
After you've set it up, click Apply to preview your settings. Change some settings if you like, and then click Apply when you're done. DO NOT EXIT YET!
Click "Save to X Confguration File, but do NOT save the file. Click "Show preview..." and copy the text in the preview.
Go to Applications > System Tools > Terminal and type "su". Press Enter and enter the root password.
Now type:

Select all of the text in the document and delete it. Then, paste the text of the "Save X Configuration" window into the text editor.
Exit out of the terminal.
Exit out of the nVidia Display Settings application. Do not save anything from this application.

I installed Lubuntu 10.04 yesterday (yay, my first serious installation!), and I was trying to install the drivers for my video card (GeForce 6200), when it told me that it couldn't use ld. After oing some research I found out that it was in binutils. So I went over and got it and tried to ./configure it when it told me that there weren't any C compilers in $PATH, so I went over to the gcc homepage with a fine-toothed comb and found gcc 4.5.0. When I tried to./configure it, it also told me that there aren't any C compilers in $PATH.

View 1 Replies View Relatedi installed Fedora 12 on an external hard drive. Everything went fine with the installation and it was working perfectly until i tried to install my video card drivers. I have done this many times before and it has worked. I have an ATI card. Anyway after installing the driver i rebooted and now when it starts it show the loading bar on the bottom but then nothing happens its just a black screen!. The worst part is that when i go into windows and my external is plugged in windows wont read it and i have very valuable data on it. I go into disk management and it shows up but windows says that its empty. which is obviously not true because Fedora starts to boot. I really just want Fedora off my external and for windows to read my external with all the files still on it. Is there a way to get by that blank screen?

I have a GeForce 8600M GS card in a Dell Vostro 1710, which has appeared to be playing up lately, but I'm unsure whether it's the hardware itself or have I not properly set things up.
I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed with compiz, and 'rotate cube' enabled. The 'deformation' is set to cylinder. I recently tried using rss-glx (really slick screensaver) when the slow-down and screen freezes happened.
The symptoms:
Odd behaviour begins after attempting to log in after the screensaver has blanked the screen, i.e. screensaver ran for a while then the screen blanked. When logged back in, a 'cylinder' rotate freezes and the screen does not refresh. Clicking around the screen refreshes it somewhat. Switching between screens becomes next to impossible and a restart is required.
In general rotating the cube is OK, rotating the cylinder seems a task on the video card and rotating the sphere is horribly slow.
Things done so far:
Each time I log in, I need to open the NVidia settings and change the powermizer to 'prefer maximum performance'. On next reboot I will try this in xorg.conf code...
My questions are:
- How can I verify the card is working correctly, enough to be able to decide whether it's hardware or software at fault?
- If the hardware is proven to be OK, what am I then leaving out?
Out of curiosity, in linux, how do we check:
- The make/type of ethernet card
- The wireless chipset
- The video card

First off I cant seem to get any drivers installed for my GFX card, I've got an ATI Radeon X1300 and when I go to System > Admin > Hardware drivers it seems to find nothing. I'm pretty sure thats whats causing my next problem; Lag with games. I installed one of my favorite games, Blockland and ran it with Wine, First thing right off the bat is its lagging like hell. But, an even worse problem is happening. It doesn't even seem to start up now...
Alright, now let's go to java. One of my other favorite games, Minecraft, A game made with java, doesn't seem to work. I can play it for about 10 - 20 seconds until the game just turns white. There's also Dwarf Fortress, and it seems that I cant even get the linux version running. I looked at the requirements and got some of them, but not all and when I try to run it nothing even happens.
Lastly, Steam. So far steam is working fine, except when I try and install a game off of it, Steam just immediately closes... So, If you need my specs or anything just ask. I'd relaly like to fix some of these things so I use Ubuntu over windows, because I just love the feel more than windows.

This is my first post, as I've finally become fed up with trying to get the nvidia drivers installed on Fedora 10. I've read through all the posts here about how people have had problems. I know about the rpmfusion repository, and have followed leigh123's instructions to the letter at this link:[URL]The exact stepsI have taken before following his sage advice follows this way: install off the CD image I burned of Fedora 10, run from the menus "System-->Administration-->Update System" to get the system up to date, reboot to make sure everything is working fine.
Then I follow the above instructions (only because they have gotten me the closest to getting the drivers working). After the reboot from following those instructions, the system starts up, and I have a desktop. But when I restart again, either because I'm shutting down for the night, or just to check again that everything is fine,I get nothing but a flashing cursor in the upper left of my screen. I'm able to CTRL+ALT+F2 and get to a login that way, but can't get into the GUI. I've searched the forums (both here and on The Web generally), and can't find a fix for this that works for me. I have gone back and erased the partition and reinstalled, so I'm at the basic install with all the updates for my system, and needing help with getting the drivers installed and working.
Just to give a run down of what I have on my system:Two NVidia 8500 GT cards connected with the SLI bridgeAMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+Runningl 2.6.27.12-170.2.5.fc10.x86_64 (I'm typing this up as I reinstall updates as I listed above).Before anyone starts giving suggestions, please make sure to give the full instructions, as I'm new to Fedora/Linux. I was messing around with Ubuntu trying to make somethings work. Then i rebooted ,and I wasn't able to turn on Visual Effects. So I'm guessing that I must have replaced my video card driver with a non-compatible one or just removed it without knowing. So I was wondering "How Can I Switch Back To The Video Card Driver Ubuntu Came With?" Without reinstalling Ubuntu? Since I was able to at least switch on Visual Effects with it.

I want to get the wireless working. I did an 'lsmod' and I found that the modules for this card is not installed. I wanted dual monitors but now I cant even get one. The xwindows doesnt appear.
Things I tried:
1. Deleted the xorg.conf and reconfigured (didnt work).
2. sax2 -r -m 0=versa (didnt work)

4. copy and paste the oold version of xorg.conf (didnt work)
5. tried to run set apt or dpkg-reconfigure command (commands not found)
6. tried xconfig and prompt the best I coudl (didnt work).
7. aticonfig commands (As shown in website) (also didnt work)
I have the live CD to run it from there but I dont know what to do once I get to the terminal.
Is there any way I can revert to previous configuration since the ATI driver gives me some problems? Like a restore function in windows?
How or what files I should change for the X-server to run properly (is there any other file than xorg.conf?....)
