View 11 RepliesI want to put a script of mine in the applications menu , so that when I click on it , it executes itself ...so I created a new application by the name myapplication.desktop in /usr/share/applications/ . But when in GUI mode I traverse down to this directory and click on myapplication.desktop . It gives me an error "myapplication.desktop is not a directory". The crazy part is that when I run it using the terminal freedom@freedom-laptop: /usr/share/applications$ myapplication it runs perfectly well. I can't understand the problem...the script is correct , but I don't know about the error saying "it is not a directory" as all the other files in there are also files and they do run even in graphical mode .

I set WEP, HEX, type in the key, and then nothing happens. On the list it says this is unsecured, even though I have selected WEP.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am a newbie trying to setup wifi using 9.10 on a compaq nx9010 . The driver is activated for the broadcom 4320 rev 2 chipset. the wifi light is on.I can connect to my neighbors's unsecured network, but not mine which is using personal WPA2 security.
I am using a lynksys Wireless-N Broadband Router WRT160Nv2 I have installed WICD and removed the gnome network manager WICD tries to validate authentication which fails. then it tries to obtain an ip address which fails. finally it says: CONNECTION FAILED: UNABLE TO GET IP ADDRESS". meanwhile it is showing the wireless network at 100% signal.
last nite tried changing wifi channel, changing to WEP, installed and tried WPASUPPLICANT and WPA_GUI. Unfortunately , nothing worked. The wifi controller was able to assosciate with the network but could not authenticate. I'm wondering if the passphrase that I type in on the computer is somehow being turned into a hexidecimal or something so that it does not match what the router has as the pass phrase.
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my new laptop. Everything seems to be running smoothly with the exception of the networking department. My computer is a Toshiba Qosmio X505 with a 8192 Realtek Wireless card built in (I think its called MiniPCI or something)If you need any more information, let me know the terminal commands and I'll get it right away.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just set up a Squeeze server for a friend of mine using my exact apache2 settings. He has been playing around, having a bit of fun learning HTML, but he ran into a problem where one of his images would not display. I at first figured his HTML was incorrect, but after a very long time of trying to figure out the problem, I still do not know what is going on, so I think it must be an apache2 problem?[URL]..
View 14 Replies View RelatedI am new to Debian but not Linux-based systems. I have been experimenting a lot with Debian Lenny/Squeeze. I am growing more comfortable each day with the Debian design. Yet there remain many unexplored areas. I am creating a migration check list. Things to check, prepare, or reconfigure when moving from one Linux-based system to Debian.
I have a good computer background and my current check list probably is fairly good. Yet I would appreciate input and opinions from experienced Debian users of things to watch in such a migration. Login defs, passwd/group files, different directory locations, keymaps, services and daemons, etc. I am not too concerned with the desktop as I plan to stick with KDE 3.5 for a while and I can basically move those settings across.
I want to put check menu & check list in utility dialog.i dont know how i do this

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've recently installed FC12 and would like to leave this PC setup to grab an IP via DHCP. I use BackupPC so it needs to have a dhcp_hostname set so the machine can be located for backing up, and all that appears right however BackupPC can't find it.
When I run Angry IP Scanner, the hostname shows as N/A. Is this possibly a function of SELinux? In contrast, my FC11 box shows a hostname but I don't run SELinux on it.
How can I check for certain that the machine is submitting its hostname when it requests an IP?
It frozen up occasionally, when that happens, usually the harddisk light lights up continuously. So I suspect some process is writing to the disk, which prevent other process to go on. how do I find out who's using a lot of IO?

I recently upgraded to Fedora 15 from Fedora 14 using preupgrade. Most of the applications are working fine. But I am finding now that the OS does NOT check for updates. I am having to manually do the update each time although it is set to check for updates daily.
However, when I manually update using the code (below), it works fine.
Code:
yum update

View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm running Fedora 11 64bit on an Acer Aspire 3935, dual boot with Windows Vista. I installed three days ago and the system is supposedly fully updated. While doing some routine configuring I noticed that I am unable to access the Preference window of File Management.
I want to check the box for 'always open in browser windows', but therefore I need the Preference window. When I try to access through System > Preferences > File Management, it says starting for a few seconds and then nothing. When I try to access through Computer > Edit > Preferences, the window crashes and disappears. I suppose there are other ways to change that setting, but in any case I'd like to get the general problem solved, not only the setting changed.
I found my fedora 9 GNOME gui is very very slow. Browser, editor everything ... when I type in the editor, the display is even slower than I type! View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to check spelling in a text document, but gedit (v. 2.28.0) reports every word as incorrect. When I check the "autospell" option, it highlights the entire document. When I try to set the language, the language list is empty. I do have aspell and aspell-en installed, but gedit seems to ignore them. aspell works fine from the command line. The SpellChecker plugin is installed. Anyone has an idea what might be missing? Some env variable is not set correctly? Any other leads? (I am on Fedora 12).
I wouldn't be asking, but I'm tuning this up for someone who isn't command-line-knowledgeable.
I have Fedora 12 & GNOME. But, this actually is an issue with many Linux distro's and GNOME. If I set the Keep Aligned Check Box Off - the next reboot it is back too set on. (Right click empty area on GNOME Desktop). I have searched many forums and search engines, I must be doing my search wrong there must be others that have noticed this, And the posts I do find on it are sometimes pretty old, so it does not seem like a bug would be around so long. I saw some notes about Nautilus also but no answers. FYI In CentOS 5.4 & GNOME it works properly.
