I have been trying to install Ubuntu by network booting, I used tftp in Windows in another pc, and the target boots successfully but fails to download from any archive mirror, I'm not sure what goes wrong.
Well, I'm trying to do is, my friend's HP-mini fails to boot to Windows, and BIOS also gives error-messages, the thing is that my friend has important data on his netbook, it has only one drive, no cd-rom, and it doesn't support USB-booting, so I was thinking if I get to access an Ubuntu, I will be able to backup his data and install Windows, I would use anything that would let me copy files.

I am attempting a netboot installation and I aw following the documentation found here My problem is that given my dhcpd.conf I am met with the errors listed below. I have checked to make sure that none of the conditions that the error warns about possible causes are currently in effect on my system.
option domain-name "example.org";
option domain-name-servers ns1.example.org, ns2.example.org;
default-lease-time 600;

On all the previous versions of Ubuntu there was a button I'd press to change between button navigation like this and text navigation like this but I can't find this button anymore so now all I have is button navigation. Theres no reason they'd get rid of that feature so I'm guessing its in there somewhere, I just can't find it.

I have a bootable usb stick with a Linux utility on it. After poking around for a bit I figured out the boot order:
isolinux.bin <--reads isolinux.cfg
loads the kernel: SA.1
loads initrd: SA.2
then depending on the options you select it boots one of two .iso files I want this utility to netboot instead of booting with a usb stick; is there a way I can package isolinux.bin, isolinux.cfg, the kernel and initramfs, iso's and all the other files on the root of the usb stick into one iso that can be tftp'd to the host which would then boot something that would extract the iso to ramdisk and start booting so that isolinux would run as if all the files were locally stored on CD/usb stick?

I tried to build a HP DL380 today, and the drive wasn't detected. Suspecting hardware issues, I tried it on a 360, same issue. We built these machines before with no problems I used the 8.10 install on our PXE server, and it worked fine. I suspect it's related to the upcoming 8.04.4 release, perhaps a new kernel has been inserted and has missed the cciss driver? Booting using 8.04, and running find /|grep cciss, doesn't find anything. I can't remember the last hp 8.04 build I did, but it was in the last month or so. Doing it with 8.10 finds the driver. (this is the 32 bit install)

I am very interested in using CentOS as a server for diskless PXE booting and was wondering if this was a possibility. I have a working DHCP/TFTP/HTTP system set up and going and I can get my client machine to boot a linux image without any problems. Ideally I would like the diskless machines to be able to immediately load an image through PXE and store their own filesystems on the server through the use of NFS.I heard about system-config-netboot and got very excited because it sounded like something that would help me set up a diskless system. However, after doing some research I have heard from many that it is generally buggy and unlikely to work. When I tried using it I got the error: "The diskless directory must be NFS exported and contain a boot sub-directory"Even though my diskless directory WAS nfs exported and most definitely contained a boot sub-directory. Does anyone have any advice on using this tool, or using CentOS as a server for diskless clients?

I upgraded the computer of my son from kubuntu 9.10 (I think) to Kubuntu 10 and, once the system rebooted I got the following error message:
Quote:
Could not start ksmserver, check your installation When I press "OK" I am back at the login screen.
Two questions:1) What is a ksmserver and: 2)How the hell do i solve this problem?

I am new to Debian but not Linux-based systems. I have been experimenting a lot with Debian Lenny/Squeeze. I am growing more comfortable each day with the Debian design. Yet there remain many unexplored areas. I am creating a migration check list. Things to check, prepare, or reconfigure when moving from one Linux-based system to Debian.
I have a good computer background and my current check list probably is fairly good. Yet I would appreciate input and opinions from experienced Debian users of things to watch in such a migration. Login defs, passwd/group files, different directory locations, keymaps, services and daemons, etc. I am not too concerned with the desktop as I plan to stick with KDE 3.5 for a while and I can basically move those settings across.

I feel a little awkward in this Control Panel: first time user. I installed the latest version of Ubuntu yesterday. All went smooth until I got to installing printer drivers. The setup went online and my system froze...everything froze. I had to do a hard reset. The printer installation went smooth the second time. So far this is the only problem I've had. No details needed. What I was wondering is if there's any way to check if the hard reset did any damage.

I've just installed ubuntu 9.04 (had the disc from before) and I'm upgrading to 9.10 of course but I have a question. How do I check that I have the latest drivers installed for everything in my laptop? I'm the kind of person that has that nagging feeling in the back of my head telling me that everything isn't installed perfectly and I need to install my drivers properly (or at least ask).

I'd love to know how to check the original configuration of a self-installed package? For example, I would like to install the package XXXXX. I did:
./configure
make
make install
After the installation, I would like to know what the configuration I used for XXXXX's installation. Maybe some dependencies (for example, A,B,C...) were not found so that XXXXX was installed without depending on A,B,C.... However, now, I would like XXXXX depend on A,B,C... How to check whether the current installed XXXXX's original configuration?

Recently I installed Arch on my computer. There are now three systems on it:XP,Ubuntu,Arch.I choose to share the same disk space for swap and /home in the two systems.The installation went well except some problems with Grub, and I managed to made it work. These days,when I start my computer and choose Ubuntu,there always displays a short message about /home disk checking or some problems about fstab. I don't know why. When I login to the system, it works well all the time.

I just upgraded to 10.04 and it went very smoothly. Only problem is that this version now tries to check a couple of hard drives that are external and not attached to the system. They were set up some time ago and the boot will not proceed unless I manually enter "S" to skip. I have removed folders for these disks that were in /media/... but that didn't solve the problem.

Tried upgrading from 8.04 lts to 10.04 and it wouldn't work b/c of too many mods to my 8.04 system? So I tried a fresh install per usb stick. System kept locking up during install, as well as when I run it from the usb, I've since learned. graphics card? I can't log into windows either per the grub loading please wait error 15. I've googled & searched the forums & everything I've tried doesn't work, there were some possible solutions that I don't understand how to do. can't get to a terminal to check or modify anything. Hitting "e" at the boot menu does nothing. I don't know how to do anything from here! Compaq Presario SR5350, 2GB RAM, Dual Core Proc 2150MHz. Dual boot w/Vista, HDD is partitioned separately with Root, Home & swap. Also, sda5 or / has been formatted to ext4, still using grub 1.5.
