Fedora Installation :: Can't Boot After Installing F13?

Jun 19, 2010

Having searched this and other forums and googled without valid results, I need some help. I've been a linux user since RH 5.2, having experimented with several distros but have not run into this problem previously. I've just installed F13 for the third time. Each time the installation completes without any apparent error but when I reboot, I get the following message:Quote:

Error No Active Partition
Intel UNDI, PXE-2.1 (build 082)
copyright ...
This product is covered by one or more of the following patents ...
Realtek PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller Series v2.26 (090219)
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M06: Exiting PXE ROM

The cable failure is consistent with there being no cable and inability to configure wireless during install. I used the custom partitioning option during install and was very careful to search for any fields I might have missed initially.

Fedora Installation :: Cant Boot Into Windows Xp After Installing 15?

Aug 6, 2011

I'm not able to boot into windows XP after having upgraded to Fedora 15 (from a linux magazine DVD). I just get a perennial flashing cursor with black screen. I have tried leaving it like this for a few minutes to see if anything is happening in the background, but to no avail. There were no issues at all with Fedora 14.The grub.conf file appears to have been modified only to pre-pend the fedora 15 boot option. I have changed nothing else in grub.conf or (windows for that matter). All the Fedora boot options work correctly.I have update everything using yum update.Having read a few posts I am still none the wiser. I append the grub.conf and the output of "fdisk -l". What is Fedora 15 version of grub doing differently, and what has it modified that disables the windows part of the bootloader?

# grub.conf generated by anaconda

# Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file

Fedora Installation :: F10 Won't Boot After Installing ATI Drivers / Resolve This?

Jan 16, 2009

I'm new to these forums. I'm coming from using Ubuntu for a couple of years and now I'm trying to switch to Fedora.

I installed F10 yesterday and all went well, more or less. The system used to freeze randomly but after updating, everything seemed to work fine (I haven't tried audio yet, though).

I have an X1250 integrated graphics system that's working fine in Ubuntu. After playing around with F10 for a while I decided to download and install the latest ATI drivers from AMD's site. The installation posed no problems, but when I reboot the system it will come to a black screen at some point and freeze there.

I searched the web a little and came to this: http://www.fedorafaq.org/#radeon, but I'm not sure if that's current or old news. If it's current and those ATI drivers can't be installed, I'd appreciate some help about removing them.

Installation :: Unable To Boot Window XP After Installing Fedora / Solution For This?

Sep 25, 2009

My hard disk is a 40 gb seagate drive with 3 logical partitions - C (Win 98), D (Data), E (Win XP Home). Yesterday, I decided to format Win 98 partition and install Fedora 11 on it. I used Live USB, custom partitioned for /, /boot and swap. Installation went fine until the Add/Delete boot screen came when I got multiple Unable to mount partition errors. Then I added Win XP (which was on sda6) and restarted the system. When the system booted, I selected Win XP but it didn't do anything. It showed blank screen and then reverted to grub boot loader screen. Then I selected Fedora time and completed installation and it works fine but XP doesn't boot.

Thinking something might have gone wrong, today I reinstalled Fedora. I chose "Install over previous Linux" and this time the installation went smoothly without any errors. However it still doesn't let me boot into Win XP. It gives a "Booting into WinXP in 3/2/1 seconds" and then goes blank and keeps repeating that message.

This is the result of fdisk -l code...

Fedora Installation :: Lost Vista Boot After "installing" 10

Jun 9, 2009

So I had Windows Vista installed on my laptop(two 250gb HD). After trying to install fedora 10 with the Live CD, with some errors about root and boot, I ( don't really know why) tried the resize option and changed the second HD to 2 partitions. Put boot on the first. The installation was sucessful, i rebooted, but nothing happened. No windows vista, no fedora. So I tried to change by custom installing(installed fedora on first HD) and I guess I messed up a little. I want to boot again into Vista, but even editing grub menus failed. Any ideas on how to solve this?

Ubuntu Installation :: Installing With No Optical - USB Boot Or FDD

Jan 18, 2010

I have a Dell Lattitude LS. It gets used for very light web browsing, RDP into my main PC and also to access Megasquirt in my car. It had until recently a stripped out XP install there that ran ok despite the laptop being a P3 500, 256mb RAM. That install is now damaged, it gets as far as the login screen and then hangs. Instead of repairing it, I want to put ubuntu on there as i think it'll manage the (lack of) resources better. However, the laptop has no optical drive, cannot boot from USB and I'm not sure if the external FDD. I have for it works either (it's a bit crusty).

I do have a pata > usb convertor to access the drive via my main PC though. Am just not sure what I can put on there to let me boot and then install. Is it plausible to make the HDD act like a LiveCD? Should I partition it, and copy the install ISO contents into one of the partitions, and go from there - but how do I make that bootable? I do have another laptop with a PATA HDD that does have a working optical drive. Could I begin the install on that, then pull the drive and swap it over at some point during the install - or is that a no go?

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Boot Win7 After Installing 10.10

Dec 25, 2010

I had win 7 installed, decided to install ubuntu on this desktop computer. I had a windows partition, and a few other partitions, one with a wubi install of windows that I never used, so I decided to delete it, while installing ubuntu 10.10. I had free unallocated space for installing ubuntu, which was contiguous to the partition of the wubi install of ubuntu, so I decided to merge them, I did all this in gparted while installing ubuntu 10.10, 2gb swap, then 15gb root and all that remained to home.

Everything worked out fine (of course I never touched the win7 partition). After reboot grub doesn't show win 7, so I thought I'll just add it to grub, followed a few tutorials on this forum, but nothing worked. Then I remembered that the partition which I deleted to merge with the ubuntu partition, was an Active partition, and soon found out that my win7 partition was not active! (this is probably because I installed win 7 while I had still win vista, so that active partition was where vista was).

So now a ~100mb apparently unallocated partition was the active partition (win 7 hidden boot partition?), and trying the Startup repair of win 7 cd doesn't work, tried bootrec /fixboot, successfully, but bootrec /rebuildbcd can't find any Windows installation, even after setting the win7 partition as active with DiskPart. This is almost entirely a windows problem, but I just wanted to have Ubuntu working alongside Windows (I use a lot adobe's sw, which runs sadly only on windows, otherwise I would use only ubuntu).

Debian Installation :: Installing Next To Windows (dual Boot)?

Dec 13, 2010

I've recently bought a new computer and installed Windows 7 on it, but left 100GB of space on a separate partition so I could put Debian next to it in dual boot. I have the new Intel i7 950 processor and I run Windows 7 Proffesional 64 bit, so I assumed I had to pick the ia64 debian image. However the CD I burned from the ia64 image didn't boot. (a black screen started and an underscore kept flashing, but nothing else happened)[URL]

I've managed to install i386 Debian on a older intel pentium 4 computer before and that worked fine. I believe I used another application to burn the CD then. This time I've burned the CD with the default Windows CD burn application. I can try burn more CD's but I don't have much left so I want to make sure this is the problem before attempting again. (the burned files on the ia64 CD look exactly the same as the files on the i386 CD, when browsing through the cd files in windows) "If your PC has a 64-bit AMD or Intel processor, you will most likely need the "amd64" images (though "i386" is also fine), the "ia64" images will not work."This seems a bit strange, they recommend me to use the amd64 image if you have a "64-bit AMD or intel processor". I dunno if this is a typo, but it seems weird to me that the AMD-64 Debian version would also work on my Intel machine

Ubuntu Installation :: Re-installing XP With A Two Disk Dual Boot ?

I have been running Ubuntu 9.10 and Win XP Professional as a dual boot system, with each OS on its own HDD, smoothly and seamlessly since the release of 9.10. Yesterday one of my kids got a video file from a friend and it had a virus along with it. Long story short, in the process of trying to repair it Windows shuddered it last agonizing breath.

Now I have to re-install Windows because some of the programs the schools make them use require Windows. How do I go about doing this without damaging my Ubuntu installation? Will re-installing on a second drive affect GRUB?
