Ubuntu :: When Turn On The Computer, The GRUB Menu Appears, Press Enter, Then A Little Flashing Underscore Appears On The Screen?
Dec 21, 2010I recently removed Winblows Vista from my laptop and replaced it with Kubuntu 10.10 (I left the recovery partition on there, just in case). When I turn on the computer, the GRUB menu appears, I press enter, then a little flashing underscore appears on the screen in the top left hand corner. After a few seconds, the Kubuntu logo appears and I can log in.But yesterday I replace Kubuntu with Ubuntu 10.10. The Boot process is the same, but the little flashing underscore in the top left hand corner flashes for about 10 seconds longer then Kubuntu 10.10 did, and then a few paragraphs of text appears for a few seconds, then I am logged in automatically.Is this "unusual" boot process anything to worry about, or am I just being a noob.

May 11, 2010Two days ago I decided to migrate from Fedora to Ubuntu 10.04. On the Ubuntu install I chose to format the entire disk as I do not want a dual boot system. I have three disks and have set the bios to boot from dvd, then main disk, then 2nd disk, then any other bootable drive and coming from a working Fedora I know I have my "slaves" and "Master" pin positions on the disks set correctly.
When I try to boot the fresh install of Ubuntu I do not see any menu options, no boot image nothing, I get taken immediately to a grub command window and I dont know how to fix things from there. I have tried to fix things by booting into the "try before you 'buy'" thing on the installation cd and I can see that Ubuntu has been installed on the main disk, but all in all Im stuck.

Oct 21, 2010My dell machine has the following: A raid 0 SAS config with Windows 7 installed in one partition, and ubuntu in the other partition. Then two seperate sata hdd. The raid drive is set as first boot, and Windows views it as disk 0 and boots just fine. When I installed ubuntu 10.04 on the second partition, it viewed the disk as sdc. And when booting off the raid drive,im not given a grub menu to choose ubuntu orwin 7,windows 7 boots all on its own.

Have installed Ubuntu 10.10 (on a reformatted hard drive) today. No change. It's fairly certain to be a hardware problem but I don't know where to start.

I have search on the net for this problem and i have understand it a little. But my situation is a bit different and because i don't want to format my hard disc i wanna try to fix it. So i download the latest ubuntu 10.4 and install it while having windows xp and the old ubuntu 9.10(so i had windows xp, ubuntu 9.10 and ubuntu 10.4 partitions). Now i tried to delete the partition of ubuntu 9.10 from disc utility. so i have the message i wrote above when i boot. I dont wanna delete my windows xp and ubuntu 10.4. what should i do to stop this message from appearing.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Broken + Black Screen On Boot
Jun 15, 2010PC specs: i7 920, Ati HD5870, 4GB ram Installing Ubuntu 10.04 from a USB stick. The stick is fine as I installed Ubuntu on my laptop with it no problem.
Problem #1: The grub boot manager is missing. The first time I installed Ubuntu it appeared as usual and let me choose between windows 7 and ubuntu. Due to the black screen issues I uninstalled Ubuntu. Since then, every time I've tried reinstalling it I don't get the grub boot manager, instead my PC goes straight to windows. I have formatted the partition I installed Ubuntu on, as well as installing it on another drive, to no effect.
Problem #2: After the Ubuntu splash screen, I'm greeted by a black screen. After a few seconds my monitor goes into standby. Ctrl+alt+f1 does nothing, and removing quiet and splash from the command line didn't help either. I hear I need to use vesa drivers but I have no idea how to go about this when I can't even get the OS to start in the first place.

Mar 19, 2011I am trying to install Ubuntu Server 10.10 on a computer with 5x 1.5 TB HDDs. I went through the process of partitioning the five hard drives into three partitions each:
sd*0 is a 300MB partition for /boot, RAID1, 2 active, 3 spare
sd*1 is a 500MB partition for swap, RAID1, 2 active, 3 spare
sd*2 is a 1.5TB partition for /, RAID5+LVM, 5 active, 0 spare.
md0 is the raid1 on sd*0
md1 is the raid1 on sd*1
md2 is the raid2 on sd*2
During the install, everything seemed to work fine with the formatter, but the installation ended in error. I booted into rescue mode and found that though all the drives were U (in /proc/mdstat), it was resyncing. I let this run (overnight) and the next day, jumped back in and installed the OS successfully.
However, after installing GRUB, when the installation process asked me to reboot, the system came back up with a blank screen (blank, save for a blinking cursor) and didn't move from there. I am thinking that the problem is GRUB, since I can boot into the main LVM partition via the rescue option on the install cd. Here's what bugs me:

Jan 4, 2010I downloaded the Ubuntu ISO file and burned it to a CD-ROM. Booting from the CD on my laptop I select the language and selection screen appears with all the F1-F6 options below. I've tried all the selections and options through the F keys but that's as far as the install will go. My laptop is a Dell and it's only 3 years old with plenty of memory and HD space.

Computer boots up and gives me the grub boot screen where I can choose from: ubuntu, some memory tests and windows recovery environment (loader). But no Windows Vista. When I boot the windows recovery option the windows boot loading screen comes up but then the screen turns blank but the hard drive is still working and the wifi light also comes on my keyboard. Ubuntu is working completely fine I just need to find a way of getting Grub to display Vista instead of the Recovery environment.

Mar 29, 2010A couple weeks ago I installed Ubuntu Security and Recommended Updates that included an update to Linux Kernel 2.6.31-20. Upon installing these updates I was prompted to restart my computer for the changes to take effect. So I rebooted and encountered a Hyper Transport Sync Flood error each time I tried to boot, preventing me from booting into the OS.The above linked forum thread about the error suggested I manually adjust voltage settings in the BIOS to resolve the issue, so I gave it a try to no avail. Then I decided I would just reset my BIOS settings to the defaults (seeing as I hadn't edited that many settings to begin with). After doing so, I tried booting only to encounter a black screen with "GRUB _" printed on it.
I have encountered this issue before when I initially installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my system, but I'm not sure whether this occurrence is strictly BIOS setting related or if something effected my bootloader. (On a side note, resetting my BIOS settings to defaults seemed to, at least for now, eliminate the Hyper Transport Sync Flood error I was getting...and instead leave me with another problem.)I used this script created by meierfra. to provide info on my current boot setup, the results of which are displayed below.

Fedora :: Unable To Boot - Emblem In The Centre Of Screen Appears And Starts To Turn From White To Dark Blue
Dec 7, 2010I am unable to boot my laptop in the usual way. The fedora emblem in the centre of the screen appears and starts to turn from white to dark blue in the usual way. When it is almost complete it stops.
In order to make the machine boot i hit escape and a message says leaving interactive startup mode. At this point the machine continues to start up.
When i do manage to get it to boot i get the following message repeated many times:
I should also add... The laptop will not close down, once i click switch off the screen turns blue and displays the fedora emblem in the centre. At the top right text says "Shutting Down" but at this point the system hangs.

It can't be because of the Kubuntu installation but i can't find any other reason for that to happen.

So I took out his hard drive, put it in a hard drive enclosure, and plugged it into his brand new Windows 7 laptop which he loves dearly. I went through the installation, took lots of caution to make sure I had the right disk, and everything went fine. (the ancient pc wouldn't boot because it couldn't find the sfs file, but I that's the least of my problems.) So I pulled the hard drive out and rebooted his Windows 7 laptop. I then decided kali linux is too complicated for me and decided to delete everything and reinstall windows 8 again however I was surprised that my bios screen looks diffrent also I can not edit the boot sequence.
If I press f2 or f12 it takes me to a screen with a tab named Boot menu and its written on it debian and every time I press enter on it it takes me back to this same screen...
I can not boot from cd or usb!

Fedora :: Get The Graphical Screen Back By Adding Vga=795 To /boot/grub/grub.conf
Nov 21, 2009since i have installed the nvidia drivers i have lost the graphical boot and just had a bar at the bottom of the screen instead. i tried to get the graphical screen back by adding vga=795 to my /boot/grub/grub.conf but when i rebooted not only did i not get the graphical boot or the toolbar at bottom.
i got list of all the drivers and services it is starting with ok next to it. i have also since doing this lost the bit when restarting or shutting down getting the words restarting or shutting down and just get blank screen with flashing cursor. i removed the vga=795 and i still get the list of drivers/services loading.
how do i get the quiet option back. i have checked /boot/grub/grub.conf and it has the quiet in it.i have also tried running update-grub but get message command not found. i have attached the grub.conf file
