how to edit the grub listing that appears during computer boot.
My listing shows 3 OS:-
1. Ubuntu 10.04
2. Ubuntu 9.10
3. Windows XP
I have deleted Windows XP, meaning that my system does not contain Windows XP.
I recently removed Winblows Vista from my laptop and replaced it with Kubuntu 10.10 (I left the recovery partition on there, just in case). When I turn on the computer, the GRUB menu appears, I press enter, then a little flashing underscore appears on the screen in the top left hand corner. After a few seconds, the Kubuntu logo appears and I can log in.But yesterday I replace Kubuntu with Ubuntu 10.10. The Boot process is the same, but the little flashing underscore in the top left hand corner flashes for about 10 seconds longer then Kubuntu 10.10 did, and then a few paragraphs of text appears for a few seconds, then I am logged in automatically.Is this "unusual" boot process anything to worry about, or am I just being a noob.

View 2 Replies View RelatedTwo days ago I decided to migrate from Fedora to Ubuntu 10.04. On the Ubuntu install I chose to format the entire disk as I do not want a dual boot system. I have three disks and have set the bios to boot from dvd, then main disk, then 2nd disk, then any other bootable drive and coming from a working Fedora I know I have my "slaves" and "Master" pin positions on the disks set correctly.
When I try to boot the fresh install of Ubuntu I do not see any menu options, no boot image nothing, I get taken immediately to a grub command window and I dont know how to fix things from there. I have tried to fix things by booting into the "try before you 'buy'" thing on the installation cd and I can see that Ubuntu has been installed on the main disk, but all in all Im stuck.

View 9 Replies View RelatedMy dell machine has the following: A raid 0 SAS config with Windows 7 installed in one partition, and ubuntu in the other partition. Then two seperate sata hdd. The raid drive is set as first boot, and Windows views it as disk 0 and boots just fine. When I installed ubuntu 10.04 on the second partition, it viewed the disk as sdc. And when booting off the raid drive,im not given a grub menu to choose ubuntu orwin 7,windows 7 boots all on its own.

I have search on the net for this problem and i have understand it a little. But my situation is a bit different and because i don't want to format my hard disc i wanna try to fix it. So before a couple months i download ubuntu 9.10 and i installed it a month later. But my computer used to crash all the time and i couldnt use it. So i download the latest ubuntu 10.4 and install it while having windows xp and the old ubuntu 9.10(so i had windows xp, ubuntu 9.10 and ubuntu 10.4 partitions). Now i tried to delete the partition of ubuntu 9.10 from disc utility. so i have the message i wrote above when i boot. I dont wanna delete my windows xp and ubuntu 10.4. what should i do to stop this message from appearing.
I'm using HP Pavilion dv2108tx I have ubuntu and Win7 dual boot. The problem is every time I change setting to the BIOS there will be a new list of ubuntu boot came up and now I scroll trough the whole list. Is there anyway to edit GURB boot list.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently switched my laptop from Ubuntu 11.04 to 10.04.2, and during the process, I used GPARTED to partition the drive so that I could have both versions installed simultaneously while I transferred files and settings and such. A few days ago, I removed the 11.04 partition, formatted and added that disk space to 10.04's /home partition. However, when I boot up, GRUB still gives me the option of loading into the newer 11.04 partition with the newer kernels. How do I remove those options from the GRUB menu? I checked the Ubuntu GRUB help pages, but didn't feel confident that I could do edits without messing up the 10.04 boot settings.

Also after running a few updates I now have multiple boot items listed for Ubuntu that I'm sure are no longer needed. Having never edited Grub and searching through the forum, I'm asking help. I'm dual boot with Vista(TM) and UBUNTU(tm) and ran out of space on Ubuntu partition:I booted Ubuntu 10.04LTS live CD and shrank the VISTA. It would NOT let me grow the extended partition? So now I have:

I think my Natty 64 bit install is missing a dependency for gk, even though it shows up install in Synaptic. I have also tried using Start up Manager and the changes I make there don't show up after restarting either. I just want to change the default boot to number 4, Windows. Any suggestions are welcome, but I have tried all the ones I've found on this forum so far and none have worked, including editing etc/grub/default and saving with sudo update-grub. That's when I get a "gk not found" error.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu 9.10 64 Bit, and I also have Windows 7, and I want to make Win7 boot first and without having to manually choose it every time I restart, for my non-linux using family. I have tried the guides where it says you have to edit the "menu.lfg(or whatever it is)" and I don't have that file. I have looked, it's not there, the closest I found was "grub.cfg" and I can't make any sense out of it. I'm not unfamiliar with computers, I'm just relatively new to Ubuntu, and want to make the best out of it I can, I love it. I've tried going into GRUB, and and editing the Win7 Loader, but it doesn't work.

A couple weeks ago I installed Ubuntu Security and Recommended Updates that included an update to Linux Kernel 2.6.31-20. Upon installing these updates I was prompted to restart my computer for the changes to take effect. So I rebooted and encountered a Hyper Transport Sync Flood error each time I tried to boot, preventing me from booting into the OS.The above linked forum thread about the error suggested I manually adjust voltage settings in the BIOS to resolve the issue, so I gave it a try to no avail. Then I decided I would just reset my BIOS settings to the defaults (seeing as I hadn't edited that many settings to begin with). After doing so, I tried booting only to encounter a black screen with "GRUB _" printed on it.
I have encountered this issue before when I initially installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my system, but I'm not sure whether this occurrence is strictly BIOS setting related or if something effected my bootloader. (On a side note, resetting my BIOS settings to defaults seemed to, at least for now, eliminate the Hyper Transport Sync Flood error I was getting...and instead leave me with another problem.)I used this script created by meierfra. to provide info on my current boot setup, the results of which are displayed below.

i installed ubuntu inside windows but someone instead of uninstalling it directly deleted the ubuntu folder inside windows ,thinking that the partition will be deleted. but when i restarted the system and command prompt came and said unable to find boot record and i couldn't boot windows as well and a grub prompt came like grub>, then i inserted the windows boot cd and repair the boot record error but my problem is , instead of doing this way, can i do so by grub prompt directly without using winidows cd.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI followed a tutorial to install XP across my entire HDD. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 "Alongside another OS". Ubuntu loads fine, but when trying to load XP, the boot screen shows up, but then the computer restarts and returns to the GRUB menu.
I saw some threads on this site and tried to type: sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
In the terminal. It returned a blank text document so I'm not sure if that information was outdated. I then typed: sudo fdisk -l

Not sure what any of this means, but I sure hope someone else does. I would say forget XP, but it's hard to let go of some of the games and software I use. I appreciate any responses, thank you.
I tried to format the table as it appeared, but the forum corrected the extra spaces.
I'm trying to set up some shares on this pc and every time I try to edit the /etc/exports file I get this error. I get the same error when I try to edit /boot/grub.conf file or any other files. Does not matter what editor I use. I'm running f14.

After certain system-wide changes, like kernels updates, I obtain grub prompt on restart. However, if I put the hard drive into another computer (b), it boots up fine. Since, however, I use the present computer (a) regularly, I only use b to purge and reinstall grub using the chroot method. However, doing so every time is time consuming; and I cannot change anything in the defaults and run update-grub without obtaining a grub prompt on restart. How do I fix this?
View 9 Replies View Relatedmy Setup is Fedora 14 x64 + radeon hd 4830 i've downloaded .run package from ati site with latest driver for x64 systems. installed it, but didn't edited grub.conf becouse i didn't understood anything there (probably didn't spent enough time to get things understand) Now i've lost possibility to enter my Fedora system. during boot it lost it's modern blue boot screen (with filling drop), it was replaced by standard old boot screen with triple-color stripe. after this boot screen monitor start blinking going on and off. and on last step i'm getting "Fedora 14 boot bla bla bla something" on screen. nothing works except Ctrl+Alt+Delete. system reboots showing successful daemons shutting sequence. How can i edit grub menu from initial grub screen is it possible to it's own 'e' option or 'c' from grub command line?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an old Windows XP Media Centre 2005 computer. My sister is the primary user of the computer and she's always downloading viruses and stuff on it so I decided to clean it up a bit and install Ubuntu via Wubi so we could use something that was harder to screw up, easier to use, and faster. I downloaded the iso of Lucid and ran Wubi.The installation worked fine (with the exception of that annoying "no disk" pyrun.exe error, which I had to keep clicking cancel to get out of). I restarted the computer, selected Ubuntu, and Lucid began to install and showed that very well-presented slideshow of Ubuntu's features. It finished, told me to reboot my computer and all seemed well until it reached the boot menu.
When it comes up to XP's boot selector, it gives me the standard list - pick between XP Media Centre and Ubuntu. I selected Ubuntu. Then, it brings me to the GRUB menu. Except, there's no Ubuntu options, just "Dell Recovery Partition" and "Windows XP." I'm positive that Dell Recovery Partition is the factory restore thing since I've used it before, but selecting Windows XP brings be back to XP's OS chooser. It's just an infinite loop until you choose XP from its own OS list.I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it, but a "skip" button appeared on the installation near the end when it didn't appear to be doing anything, so I clicked it. Would that have affected the install?
I've already googled this problem and I've only come across one thread with this problem, and it was from 2 months ago and didn't seem to have a clear resolution. This problem is pretty depressing considering I've used Wubi on two other computers and never ran into any trouble.Also, I would dual boot but I see no problem with using Wubi since it saves a lot of trouble and there's 95% less chance of breaking something (I've been using it for a month or so on my Dell laptop since my preinstalled Windows Vista KSOD'd and I haven't ran into any complications). Plus, I don't have any blank disks or USBs laying around and I'm not waiting 2 months to get a Ubuntu CD.
I have 9.10 installed, grub has loaded and worked, now all of a sudden nothing will boot.The HP screen comes up and then the computer reboot, constant reboot cycle. Can't even get into the BIOS. It will just sit there if I hit escape. Won't boot the live cd either. What can I do??? It has worked fine for the past month now.
