Installation :: GRUB Appears Out Of Nowhere After Installation?
Apr 3, 2010
I was installing linux on my friend's really old desktop pc, and his desktop wouldn't boot from a cd. So I took out his hard drive, put it in a hard drive enclosure, and plugged it into his brand new Windows 7 laptop which he loves dearly. I went through the installation, took lots of caution to make sure I had the right disk, and everything went fine. (the ancient pc wouldn't boot because it couldn't find the sfs file, but I that's the least of my problems.) So I pulled the hard drive out and rebooted his Windows 7 laptop. And to my horror, instead of booting windows, it said something like: GRUB loading..... section 1.5Error 21I was in such a state of shock that I forgot to write down exactly what it said. But anyway, he is really upset now, not at me because I worked on fixing it for hours and hours, but I gotta get this fixed

Two days ago I decided to migrate from Fedora to Ubuntu 10.04. On the Ubuntu install I chose to format the entire disk as I do not want a dual boot system. I have three disks and have set the bios to boot from dvd, then main disk, then 2nd disk, then any other bootable drive and coming from a working Fedora I know I have my "slaves" and "Master" pin positions on the disks set correctly.
When I try to boot the fresh install of Ubuntu I do not see any menu options, no boot image nothing, I get taken immediately to a grub command window and I dont know how to fix things from there. I have tried to fix things by booting into the "try before you 'buy'" thing on the installation cd and I can see that Ubuntu has been installed on the main disk, but all in all Im stuck.

My dell machine has the following: A raid 0 SAS config with Windows 7 installed in one partition, and ubuntu in the other partition. Then two seperate sata hdd. The raid drive is set as first boot, and Windows views it as disk 0 and boots just fine. When I installed ubuntu 10.04 on the second partition, it viewed the disk as sdc. And when booting off the raid drive,im not given a grub menu to choose ubuntu orwin 7,windows 7 boots all on its own.

I recently removed Winblows Vista from my laptop and replaced it with Kubuntu 10.10 (I left the recovery partition on there, just in case). When I turn on the computer, the GRUB menu appears, I press enter, then a little flashing underscore appears on the screen in the top left hand corner. After a few seconds, the Kubuntu logo appears and I can log in.But yesterday I replace Kubuntu with Ubuntu 10.10. The Boot process is the same, but the little flashing underscore in the top left hand corner flashes for about 10 seconds longer then Kubuntu 10.10 did, and then a few paragraphs of text appears for a few seconds, then I am logged in automatically. Is this "unusual" boot process anything to worry about, or am I just being a noob.

After certain system-wide changes, like kernels updates, I obtain grub prompt on restart. However, if I put the hard drive into another computer (b), it boots up fine. Since, however, I use the present computer (a) regularly, I only use b to purge and reinstall grub using the chroot method. However, doing so every time is time consuming; and I cannot change anything in the defaults and run update-grub without obtaining a grub prompt on restart. How do I fix this?

I have ubuntu installed through wubi on me windows xp machine.
I updated to 11.o4.
However, on startup Ubuntu has two generic and two recovery logins now.
All of them work, but I like having just one of each.
Is one maybe a partitioned install now.
How do I check and how do I get rid of one.
I would keep the partitioned one. If that's what happened.

I upgraded a machine this morning from 9.04 to 9.10 and it went off without a hitch. I then began another upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 and it appears to have hung. Everything worked fine up through getting new packages, but when installing the upgrades; it got to Unpacking replacement javascript-common ... it opened a terminal window and stopped. It still says about 20 minutes remaining but it's been saying that for about half an hour. Is there any way I can get it to resume? What do I do now?

After making a new install of Maverick, it lets me login but then drops me on a desktop that is empty apart from the menu and taskbar. That's not a problem in itself, but nothing responds when I click it. The mouse pointer moves, but I can't click anything. Before logging in, I can click stuff on the login screen, so the mouse as such works.

I downloaded the Ubuntu ISO file and burned it to a CD-ROM. Booting from the CD on my laptop I select the language and selection screen appears with all the F1-F6 options below. I've tried all the selections and options through the F keys but that's as far as the install will go. My laptop is a Dell and it's only 3 years old with plenty of memory and HD space.

I have a laptop with 2 HDDs, 1x SSD (/dev/sda, Windows 10 Pro x64) and 1x HDD (/dev/sdb, 3 primary partitions: boot, root, swap; 1 logical partition: home).I used the Debian Stretch Alpha D1 Netinstall ISO x64 by transfering it to a USB stick with DiskImage Writer. The installation went perfectly fine. I chose GRUB to be installed in the MBR of /dev/sdb, as I want all my Linux Stuff on that second disk. The plan is to boot the second disk manually through the BIOS whenever I want to work with Debian. My Windows disk is kept unaware of anything "linuxy".
After the install was complete and I booted my /dev/sdb through the BIOS, a blinking cursor on a black screen was the result. And I don't mean a GRUB Rescue prompt.IMHO, Grub appears to not have been installed, although I chose it to be installed in the MBR of /dev/sdb at the end of the installation.
I've been reading a little, searching for a bug in the installer, but I found only a vague mentioning of such an issue: Grub missing if Debian installed on a multi-hdd system through USB stick. The solution was to get Super Grub2 Disk, and use it to boot my Debian. It worked as expected and the system booted.

I have just installed Fedora 15. I have tried both the desktop edition and the LXDE Spin on an AMD X2 64 5800+. It's hard-drive so I select "Use All Space", meaning all the partitions will be removed and recreated. The installation completes normally, when I reboot without the CD, I get the screen with blinking cursor same as [URL]... Adding intel_iommu=off to the grub.conf did not help. I presume the default installer works correctly however the installed boot configuration puzzles me. The boot partition is /dev/sda1 and the mount point is /boot. If boot from the cd after the installation, I mount:
[code]...
Is this how it should be? This is me being new to Linux probably, but I should /boot contain the boot information if that's where the boot partition is mounted? Is there any way to "turn on debugging" so I can get a better insight on what's not happening?

It not happened when I used 9.10, dual boot. After the error appearing, the system will stay still for around 20 seconds, then start to react to log in interface.Do any one meet the same problem,

I have Ubuntu 10.04 dual boot with WXP Update manager said I needed to update. Gave the password. Then it said reboot. When I rebooted, only the XP partition would boot. I saw that grub was updated. Is it possible that the grub update corrupted my grub? I can see the menu to select either WXP or Ubuntu, but when I select Ubuntu, the system reboots from scratch. I am booted from an Ubuntu USB key right now. I tried to mount what I think is the Ubuntu partition, but there does not appear to be anything on it.

My iPod touch was working fine in 10.04 and since the upgrade to Maverick, I cannot see the songs in it in Rhythmbox or Banshee. In Rhythmbox it appears empty and crashes Rhythmbox when I try to right click it to see the properties. In Banshee the songs appear as 'other'. Trying to read it in GTKPod yields the following error: iPod Database failed: Error during parsing of file /home/user/.gvfs/user's iPod/iTunes_Control/iTunes.I tried re-installing the gstreamer plugins, and also libimobiledevice to no avail. Also tried re-installing the ipod plugin for Rhythmbox and nothing there either

1) Burned Ubuntu 10.10 to a disk, When tried to install (Select Install Ubuntu) screen goes blank with dim backlight and a blinking cursor on top. Same thing happens with Try Ubuntu without installing.. 2) Tried on Lenovo T410 and Dell 1330. issue exactly remains the same.3) Tried it on a VM Worksation 6.0, "This kernel requires an x86-64 cpu but only detected an i686 error is popping up". So thought its a Ubuntu x32 an compatibility, hence downloading the 64 bit now. Will burn and check it later.

I was installing command-line-only version of Ubuntu from alternate cd. I already have an existing standard Ubuntu installation on a separate partition. Both installations share the same /home partition. When asked to choose the /boot partition, I provided the /boot partition that was used by my previous standard installation. Now that installation has finished successfully, when I try to boot, GRUB only points to the later installation (no X). Is there a way to point GRUB to my first installation as well?
Here is my partition scheme:
I have not upgraded to GRUB 2 from legacy yet.

I'm having an issue where, after having just installed Xubuntu, the GRUB menu fails to appear when the USB stick I used to install it is not plugged in. Without it, pressing ESC brings me to the Windows 7 (OS dual-booting with) special menu.Is this standard behavior? Is the default timeout zero? Can I adjust GRUB to display for a long enough time to make a decision?

Im trying to install Fedora 10 on to my HP Pavilion a340a (full product specifications: [url] ), i boot from the cd and it says "Automatic boot in 10 seconds..." etc, i get past that screen and am then at a screen with 2 shades of blue and a white bar moving at the bottem of the screen towards the words "Fedora 10", on the next screen, the log on screen, all the text is jumbled up and distorted, and everything appears frozen, except that i can move the mouse. I am not sure what the problem is but i know its not the cd because after having problems with hp pc i decided to try it on my Acer Extensa 2300 laptop (1.5ghz, 1.2gb ram, 40gb hdd, 32mb intel integrated graphics) and that installed fine, without a problem. This has led me to beleive that Fedora may not be liking the intel graphics on my HP Pavilion, and i dont know why. i really want to use Fedora 10 on my desktop. I should mention that i want to dual boot Windows XP and Fedora 10 on Pavilion, windows is already installed.

I just booted into Linux and the Update Manager prompted me to restart. After the restart the GRUB interface I expect to see is no longer there and now it is just a command line that says press tab for more options.I have not got a clue with shell language as I have had no time to learn it as of yet. Do I need to uninstall and reinstall Linux or is there a command that can be typed that boots up the operating system.Even better is there something I can do that can return me to seeing the interface like I was used to.
