Ubuntu :: When Turn On The Computer, The GRUB Menu Appears, Press Enter, Then A Little Flashing Underscore Appears On The Screen?

Dec 21, 2010

I recently removed Winblows Vista from my laptop and replaced it with Kubuntu 10.10 (I left the recovery partition on there, just in case). When I turn on the computer, the GRUB menu appears, I press enter, then a little flashing underscore appears on the screen in the top left hand corner. After a few seconds, the Kubuntu logo appears and I can log in.But yesterday I replace Kubuntu with Ubuntu 10.10. The Boot process is the same, but the little flashing underscore in the top left hand corner flashes for about 10 seconds longer then Kubuntu 10.10 did, and then a few paragraphs of text appears for a few seconds, then I am logged in automatically. Is this "unusual" boot process anything to worry about, or am I just being a noob.

Ubuntu Installation :: Blank Screen With Flashing Underscore After Grub

Mar 12, 2010

I've just installed ubuntu 9.10 from a live cd on to a 2nd HDD, with vista on the 1st. When I turn my PC on GRUB comes up and I can select ubuntu or vista, vista works but when I try to boot ubuntu the screen goes black with a small flashing underscore in the top left and then just goes completely black, nothing else happens after this. I've tried reinstalling from the live cd but when I go install nothing happens and the screen goes black again. When I was installing I changed the boot to something like scsi?

ATI radeon HD 4700 series

Ubuntu :: Loading Vista From Grub Loader - Black Screen With A Flashing Underscore Character

Jun 29, 2010

I installed Vista on my Acer 64-bit laptop first, then installed Ubuntu 9.10 in a dual-boot configuration. And when I start up my computer, Windows Vista is an option in the Grub menu. But when I use the grub loader to load Vista all I see is a black screen, with a flashing underscore character (it looks a lot like a terminal screen, waiting for input). The screen just stays like this, too - I timed it once, and 13 minutes later it was the same.

Ubuntu :: Logon Screen Appears Twice After Returning Computer From Idle?

Jun 1, 2010

I've recently done a fresh install of 10.04 on an Acer Aspire 5720 and it went pretty well. However I've a problem with the logon appearing twice. If I leave my computer idle for too long the screen locks. when I return I'm asked for my password which unlocks the computer but within a few seconds the screen locks again and I need to enter my password for a second time. This time the computer unlocks and stay unlocks.. but it's annoying I have to unlock it twice !

How can I extend the length of time before it unlocks or disable it all together.. until the problem gets fixed?

Ubuntu :: Computer Doesn't Boot Just Shows Black Screen With White Underscore ("_") Flashing In Corner

Jun 29, 2011

I had switched over from Windows to Ubuntu and got rid of windows completely but still had the recovery partition and deleted it. I then tried to add that space to another partition, "Media." For whatever reason it deleted the "Media" partition so I used TestDisk to restore it. I did something wrong and when I rebooted my computer it would not boot so I used my LiveCD to check whats wrong and it had deleted all of my partitions and Ubuntu was nowhere to be found. So I used TestDisk again to recover them, this time it was successful. when I start my computer it does not boot into Ubuntu it just shows a black screen with the white underscore ("_") flashing in the corner. I'm not sure but I don't think it is booting into the correct partition, I think it would be trying to boot the first partition, /dev/sda1, rather than /dev/sda3. If this is the problem how could I fix it? I got all the boot loader information, here it is:

Fedora :: Unable To Boot - Emblem In The Centre Of Screen Appears And Starts To Turn From White To Dark Blue

Dec 7, 2010

I am unable to boot my laptop in the usual way. The fedora emblem in the centre of the screen appears and starts to turn from white to dark blue in the usual way. When it is almost complete it stops.

In order to make the machine boot i hit escape and a message says leaving interactive startup mode. At this point the machine continues to start up.

When i do manage to get it to boot i get the following message repeated many times:

I should also add... The laptop will not close down, once i click switch off the screen turns blue and displays the fedora emblem in the centre. At the top right text says "Shutting Down" but at this point the system hangs.

Debian Multimedia :: No Lock Screen Appears After Waking Computer From Suspension

Jun 3, 2015

I am running Debian 8 with the Xfce Desktop Environment.

I was unhappy with the lock screen on Xfce so I removed xscreensaver and wrote a short custom locking script, which basically involves using i3lock along with some additional commands to make things pretty. I was able to change the default locking behaviour by modifying /usr/bin/xflock4 to run my_lock.sh.

Unfortunately, no lock screen appears whenever I suspend ie after waking the computer from suspension I don't need to type a password in. I would like to force Xfce to lock the screen with my_lock.sh before actually suspending, but I don't know how to do this.

I know that Xfce runs Code: Select allxfce4-session-logout -s when suspending, but xfce4-session-logout is a binary file which I cannot edit.

Ubuntu :: Deleted Partition In Boot - Goes To A Black Screen With A Flashing Underscore

Dec 24, 2010

I deleted both the partition with archlinux and the swap in order expand the windows xp partition. I am now unable to boot, just as gparted warned me. When I turn my computer on, it just goes to a black screen with a flashing underscore.

I cannot type anything, but cntrl-alt-dlt does restart. I have been attempting to restore grub and/or windows's boot method for the last 24hrs. The main things I've tried were the instructions here and using super grub disk. However, I have not been successful. I am running an Ubuntu live disk. At the moment, I just want to be able to run windows, but do not have an xp disk because this laptop was issued from my old college.

Ubuntu :: Grub Prompt Appears After Update-grub?

May 6, 2011

After certain system-wide changes, like kernels updates, I obtain grub prompt on restart. However, if I put the hard drive into another computer (b), it boots up fine. Since, however, I use the present computer (a) regularly, I only use b to purge and reinstall grub using the chroot method. However, doing so every time is time consuming; and I cannot change anything in the defaults and run update-grub without obtaining a grub prompt on restart. How do I fix this?

Ubuntu :: Installed An Nvidia Driver For 9.10. Now Terminal Appears When Computer Boots Up

I'm not sure what Nvidia driver I installed the other day, but it's messed things up. After Ubuntu boots up and asks for login, I am greeted with terminal. Setting 1152Xwhatever resolution failed. Setting to 1024X768. My xorg.conf.old file is completely empty, so I have no idea what the original settings were. I have tried removing and reinstalling xserver.xorg but that hasn't seemed to get me anywhere. I have also used the "apt-cache search nvidia" command to see what drivers could be installed, but every single driver that I attempt to remove isn't installed.

Ubuntu :: Put In Password, Press Enter And Then The Log In Screen Disappears?

Sep 22, 2010

My Ubuntu was working perfectly fine until this morning. It is the latest release (10.04 I think) and it is the 64 bit version. This morning I go to my computer and see there are some updates waiting. I install the updates without paying much attention to them. I really do not remember what the updates were. Then Ubuntu asks me to restart so I restart. After restart I get the usual log in screen and I hear the drums. I put in my password, press enter and then the log in screen disappears and I expect to see my desktop. But that does not happen. Instead in a split second after disappearing, the log in screen reappears and I hear the drums again.

At the beginning I thought that I simply forgot my password. But that is unlikely because I have been using the same password for 6 years now. But just in case I tried an incorrect password and I got a different behavior. If I put in an incorrect password, Ubuntu will simply say "authentication failed" and the log in screen will not disappear. When I put in the correct password, the log in screen disappears for a split second (as if my password is correct) but then instead of taking me to the desktop it takes me back to the log in screen and sounds the drums again.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Cmd Prompt Appears On Boot?

May 11, 2010

Two days ago I decided to migrate from Fedora to Ubuntu 10.04. On the Ubuntu install I chose to format the entire disk as I do not want a dual boot system. I have three disks and have set the bios to boot from dvd, then main disk, then 2nd disk, then any other bootable drive and coming from a working Fedora I know I have my "slaves" and "Master" pin positions on the disks set correctly.

When I try to boot the fresh install of Ubuntu I do not see any menu options, no boot image nothing, I get taken immediately to a grub command window and I dont know how to fix things from there. I have tried to fix things by booting into the "try before you 'buy'" thing on the installation cd and I can see that Ubuntu has been installed on the main disk, but all in all Im stuck.

Ubuntu :: Pae Kernel - Selection From List Appears After Grub Load?

Aug 23, 2010

I am currently running 9.10 ubuntu (gnome). I have a dual core intel chip at 3.00 ghz. My mobo is an ASUS P5ND2-SLI. My mobo will support up to 8gb of ram. Now, as we all know, 32-bit os/kernel will only support like 3.2gb, and 64-bit like 4gb. I'd like to install a pae kernel so I can get the most from my mobo, but honestly, I don't have a clue where to start looking for a pae kernel. I'd like to be able to select it from the list that already appears after the grub loads, and if I like it, be able to remove the rest from the list, or just make it default.

Question, in CPU-G, it says my architecture is i686. I don't know if that's the os/distro, or the kernel itself. it also lists the GCC version as 4.4.1 and Xorg as 1.6.4. my current kernel is Linux 2.6.31-22-generic. Again, I'm trying to find a pae kernel, but I don't know if my os/distro will make a difference, if the architecture is the kernel or os itself. I am still fairly new to ubuntu, and I must say, I've made the switch completely from windows.. which blows...
