I created a live usb and I am trying to boot linux, but after it starts a large written ubuntu screen when starting appears i.e its boot screen but it do not start and continues as if it is still loading.
View 8 RepliesI have a Dell Vostro 200. Have been running Ubuntu on it for 18 months - no probs. Recently it became very slow to boot. 5-10 minutes before Ubuntu startup screen appears. Have installed Ubuntu 10.10 (on a reformatted hard drive) today. No change. It's fairly certain to be a hardware problem but I don't know where to start.

When I start up and the login screen appears it no longer says my username and Other.. under it. It only displays Other.. I have to click that type in my username and then my password. When I log on the Auto Bug Reporting tool pops up and says 3 things crashed
I can't change my system time, shutdown or reboot under system or my username in the top right hand corner. I have to su and manually type reboot or shutdown to shutdown. It is like the computer is completely restricting me from using it.
When I try to get into my firewall an error comes up

I install UBUNTU 1104 on HP Desktop PC, but now it doesnt start. Just appears a Black screen with this msg: Error Code = 1001.
I want reinstall but PC is not reading CD, But the CD drive is working.
I install UBUNTU 11 in other 6 PCs, and work fine.

I never install Windows on this PC. The original OS was UBUNTU 9.04 and updates.
I recently removed Winblows Vista from my laptop and replaced it with Kubuntu 10.10 (I left the recovery partition on there, just in case). When I turn on the computer, the GRUB menu appears, I press enter, then a little flashing underscore appears on the screen in the top left hand corner. After a few seconds, the Kubuntu logo appears and I can log in.But yesterday I replace Kubuntu with Ubuntu 10.10. The Boot process is the same, but the little flashing underscore in the top left hand corner flashes for about 10 seconds longer then Kubuntu 10.10 did, and then a few paragraphs of text appears for a few seconds, then I am logged in automatically.Is this "unusual" boot process anything to worry about, or am I just being a noob.

I downloaded Ubuntu desktop 10.10 on to my Acer 5741 laptop (which I checked online for comptability), following the site's instructions to the letter. I used the USB installer to create a live USB which seemed to go fine. I then restarted as instructed and changed the USB to be selected to boot. However, from that point, the OS fails to load. I get several pages of code loading, then a screen with a logo at the bottom, then my screen just goes dark.
I've been using Windows 7 to download etc.
I downloaded a debian whezzy media after installation when the system begins to boot the system appears a white screen, and not from any error.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am unable to boot my laptop in the usual way. The fedora emblem in the centre of the screen appears and starts to turn from white to dark blue in the usual way. When it is almost complete it stops.
In order to make the machine boot i hit escape and a message says leaving interactive startup mode. At this point the machine continues to start up.
When i do manage to get it to boot i get the following message repeated many times:
I should also add... The laptop will not close down, once i click switch off the screen turns blue and displays the fedora emblem in the centre. At the top right text says "Shutting Down" but at this point the system hangs.
I run a headless Ubuntu file server which I access remotely via ssh or using VNC. After reboot, short of moving monitors around, is there anyway to start the GUI and continue using VNC as I normally would? I still rely on the GUI to get done what I need for the most part.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've restarted a server a couple times, and during the boot process pings respond when it brings up eth0, but then when i get to the command line login screen, the pings die. once i log in and do a ./network start the pings respond again, so i'm guessing its dying or not set to start automatically maybe? What should I check?

I have the following trouble when I try to install Fedora 10 with a USB Flash Drive created by Fedora LiveUSB 3.6.3 [url]...ator-3.6.3.zip in a HP Mini-Note 2133 Notebook.
Everything looked ok during install, restarted the PC, get the booting count down and splash screen.
After some seconds then get this:
I'm having trouble installing Ubuntu Netbook edition (v10.10) on my (brand new, No other OS installed) Asus Eee PC 1215T. I've successfully booted from the flash drive and can "Try Ubuntu," and everything works when doing so, however when I try to install it, the installer freezes on the second screen, right after language selection. To be a little more specific, that's the screen with the checkmarks next to "has at least 2.5 GB available drive space," "is plugged in to a power source," and "is connected to the Internet."
After I hit the "Forward" button on this screen, I just get an infinite wait cursor. I can still freely check and uncheck the boxes, and click the "Quit" button, so it's not entirely frozen, but it just won't progress any further.
I had this *exact* same problem just over a week ago when I tried to install Ubuntu on my desktop, also using the flash drive method. I ended up using the Windows installer to get it installed on my desktop, but as the netbook doesn't have any OS installed, that's not an option this time.
I have a memory stick of 8GB and I partition it like that: The first partition is a big one approx 7GB for file transfers and stuff like that - is a FAT32 file system On the second partition I made a opneSUSE 11.2 Live USB with the following command:
dd if=/path/to/iso/openSUSE-11.2-KDE4-LiveCD-i686.iso of=/dev/sdX bs=4M;sync
After that I plugged the usb in other computer to boot from USB but the system is freezing on a black screen.
I used the first partition for file transfer because Windows seems to see only the first one.
Switched off ubuntu when I installed windows 7 for a bit, didn't have time to learn the intricacies of both systems. Saw the new release and wanted to try it out. Followed the ubuntu instructions on how to install it and make a live usb. Using a 4 GB Sandisk Cruzer straight out of the box. When I boot to the usb, I get to screen that asks whether I want to run ubuntu from the USB, or to install it on my computer. Selecting the run from USB option shows a bunch of commands cycling through for a bit, then the screen goes black and just stays that way. Not really sure what the problem is. Trying to run the 64 bit version fyi.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have been trying and failing to install openSUSE 11.3 for the last couple of days to replace my Ubuntu install.
I have downloaded the openSUSE-11.3-GNOME-LiveCD-i686.iso (have downloaded numerous times in case it was a problem with the mirror I used) and done the standard dd stuff, as well as trying it from my windows partition with the ImageWriter app.
When I try and boot with the USB drive plugged in my system hangs at the boot screen and the usb drive starts flashing as if it is being read, this continues indefinitely and never goes beyond the boot screen and i eventually take the usb drive out and restart.
When plugging the drive in when Im in ubuntu it shows up as "openSUSE Live CD GNOME" and all the files seem to be there. In gparted it doesn't recognise the partitions or anything but I presume this is normal... Also reduces the size of my drive to the size of the Live CD but again I presume this is normal...
I have also tried installing using the NET iso however I have exactly the same outcome.
This laptop is a Acer Travelmate 8371 and has had Ubuntu, Mint, and Windows 7 all installed from the same USB drive. There is not optical drive so I have no other ways to install openSUSE.
I booted into the Fedora 11 on my netbook, and used the desktop icon to install to hard-drive. I specified to use "Free space", and hit next. From there, it just stalls. The "Install Fedora" window does nothing, and I'm going on a half-hour now of nothing.
Tried three times, still nothing.
The first time I tried, I chose to replacce old linux installation (ubuntu), and when I told it to install Fedora 11 root as ext4, it said the boot can't be ext4... so I chose ext3 and it said root device must be ext4...
im not very educated in amd processors, but i think that they are all 64-bit processors.
i downloaded the amd ubuntu 9.10 into my computer, and used the usb maker utility in the system menu. i put in in my new pc (it was given to me), and i tell it to boot into the usb.

anyway, i get the syslinux boot shell script thingy. i have tried lots of things. linux, vmlinuz, lots of other things i found online. so what im wondering is the exact name of the kernel in ubuntu 9.10 amd version.
Just curious if there is any sort of issues with Ubuntu and JBOD assignments. I had my 2 500GB hdd's as JBOD through my mobo BIOS/RAID Config and it didn't like it. It installed just fine and showed the hard drives separately. I really didn't think anything of it so I continued on.After the install completed successfully, and I rebooted the system, it came to a blank screen with a blinking cursor and wouldn't continue on. So I tried restarting a few times, no luck. Finally I was like "okay screw this, going to install with no RAID setup or JBOD setup." (had RAID issues last night. rabble rabble) Removed RAID configurations and BAM started right up..S. Semi-new to Linux/Ubuntu. Know the basics and what not, just not some of the more advanced stuff.Edit: Okay, so I restarted my computer and removed my USB drive (which I had installed Ubuntu from) and it didn't boot. So it was NOT an issue with JBOD. Guess I'll look for a resolution for that, though.

I want to install OpenSUSE 11.2 on my Acer TimeLine 3810TZ which has no DVD Drive and it reports that it's written it A-OK.So I go to my laptop, enter the BIOS to give priority boot to the USB (It has Three USB entries, USB-CDROM, USB-HDD, USB-FDD, so I just put them all before any HDDs, figuring it'd cycle through them) and reboot with my stick in one of the USB slots.
And then it hangs on the BIOS. It lights up my USB Stick's activity light like crazy, but it never actually leaves the BIOS screen (POST screen). Any idea what's going on? I'm kind of stuck with Windows Vista, and we all know how bad that is
Today for strange reason, one of my Ubuntu 64 bit server Linux VM failed to start ? it stopped in the FSCK scan status with the error as attached. few days back I've added new hard disk successfully and format it as sdb5 without problem.

After the restart the GRUB interface I expect to see is no longer there and now it is just a command line that says press tab for more options.I have not got a clue with shell language as I have had no time to learn it as of yet. Do I need to uninstall and reinstall Linux or is there a command that can be typed that boots up the operating system.Even better is there something I can do that can return me to seeing the interface like I was used to.
