I have a Dell Vostro 200. Have been running Ubuntu on it for 18 months - no probs. Recently it became very slow to boot. 5-10 minutes before Ubuntu startup screen appears. Have installed Ubuntu 10.10 (on a reformatted hard drive) today. No change. It's fairly certain to be a hardware problem but I don't know where to start.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI did a clean install of Ubuntu 11.04 64bit and the start up time is abnormally slow. If I start up the computer and don't press anything, the start up time is 30 minutes but it usually doesn't start up at all. It just boots into a purple screen, no splash, then it sits there and the computer doesn't have any loading lights flashing.
I had a similar problem with 10.10, but I assumed it would go away when I did a clean install of 11.04.
I can't get a read out of what's going wrong because when I press Esc it doesn't display anything, though weirdly it can sometimes get the start up process moving. I have also found that pressing enter really fast can sometimes help and something that seems completely oxymoronic, if I press the power button while it's starting up that can make it work, but nothing works every time.
Well, to start off my graphics card didn't work but I got that fixed.
When I start up and the login screen appears it no longer says my username and Other.. under it. It only displays Other.. I have to click that type in my username and then my password. When I log on the Auto Bug Reporting tool pops up and says 3 things crashed
I can't change my system time, shutdown or reboot under system or my username in the top right hand corner. I have to su and manually type reboot or shutdown to shutdown. It is like the computer is completely restricting me from using it.
When I try to get into my firewall an error comes up

I made a clean install of Ubunto 10.10 on my Compaq Presarion F700, nVida graphics, AMD Turion 64x2.Installation was fine.When I boot, it takes a lot of time, 5 minutes or more.Also, after the system loads I get those applet errors I've attached. Sometimes I get all the applet errors and sometimes it get few of them.I tried several configs of "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT" but still no luck.

This is kind of cross post from the 10.10 beta forum, but since that thread went by without a solution, forum (and thread) are locked and this problem still exists, I'll try again.
When I reboot my machine, it seems to go pretty quickly. However looking at the log it seems that most everything is running after about 8.6 seconds, and then USB starts loading up. The first log entry regarding USB comes at 32 seconds, second one at 62 seconds. The keyboard starts working at 84 seconds and the mouse at 166 seconds.
Note, this same system was running 9.10, 10.4 and various other distros I tested without such problems...
I've removed all hubs, everything is directly connected to the computer. code...
Hardware: Toshiba NB200 with Atom 280 & 2GB, 160 GB HD Everything works great except the boot time. My default boot is F11 & when the system starts in "yuk" Windows it only takes a few seconds! but when I start in F11 it takes 15 - 20 minutes for it to start. No error messages, nothing in dmesg, standard configuration. The same system with Win XP & F10 worked fine?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently removed Winblows Vista from my laptop and replaced it with Kubuntu 10.10 (I left the recovery partition on there, just in case). When I turn on the computer, the GRUB menu appears, I press enter, then a little flashing underscore appears on the screen in the top left hand corner. After a few seconds, the Kubuntu logo appears and I can log in.But yesterday I replace Kubuntu with Ubuntu 10.10. The Boot process is the same, but the little flashing underscore in the top left hand corner flashes for about 10 seconds longer then Kubuntu 10.10 did, and then a few paragraphs of text appears for a few seconds, then I am logged in automatically.Is this "unusual" boot process anything to worry about, or am I just being a noob.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been having this glitch since Maverick. I hoped installing Narwhal would solve it (clearly not), I like Ubuntu, but this makes the OS frustrating and pretty much unusable, forcing me to stick with Windows.
The glitch appears randomly but mostly within 5-10 minutes after booting.
Another thing : when you want to screenshot the glitch, it usually gives you a perfect image, with everything OK. I have no idea why it worked now. I have a Packard Bell Dot M Netbook.
I downloaded a debian whezzy media after installation when the system begins to boot the system appears a white screen, and not from any error.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am unable to boot my laptop in the usual way. The fedora emblem in the centre of the screen appears and starts to turn from white to dark blue in the usual way. When it is almost complete it stops.
In order to make the machine boot i hit escape and a message says leaving interactive startup mode. At this point the machine continues to start up.
When i do manage to get it to boot i get the following message repeated many times:
I should also add... The laptop will not close down, once i click switch off the screen turns blue and displays the fedora emblem in the centre. At the top right text says "Shutting Down" but at this point the system hangs.
I've got two laptops running Ubuntu. Both have had Lucid installed from the live cd. I have upgraded one of them to Maverick. Both distributions are running great after they boot up, but I haven't experienced any faster boot times with either distibution. Both boot to Bios and then the screen goes black with a blinking cursor in upper left corner of the screen. The black screen remains for 30 to 45 seconds and then I get the Ubuntu splash screen for maybe 5 seconds, and then desktop. Why am I not seeing faster boot times? I realize 45 to 60 seconds is good compared to other os's, but I anticipated much faster boot times. Shut down on the other hand is quite fast at maybe 5 to 10 seconds. Does anyone else get this black screen on boot? Seems like wasted time cause I can't tell what's going on during the time there is a black screen. This is not a real big deal breaker, as I don't reboot very often, but I just wonder why bootup isn't faster.

ok I I figured out why the long time to boot.I have here installed glassfish and I add a Line on /etc/hosts like that:

If I comment the last line, the starting is normal. But without this line I cant start up Glassfish. is there another way to sat my hostname?
I just installed ubuntu 10.4 on my new laptop and when it boots up there is no splash screen (All I see is a blinking cursor) and it takes about 28 seconds to boot up... I do have all the graphic stuff working...

The boot background splash screen comes up very fast, but then it is about a 1 minute wait until the login prompt appears. Then once I enter my login credentials, GNOME loads up ASAP. It wasn't this slow before I reinstalled. Anyone know why this could be? Everything works.

View 8 Replies View RelatedEver since a standard update a couple weeks ago I've had a myriad of problems, the biggest one though being boot time. Here's what happens when I turn on the machine: From bootloader (splash) to kernel loader (blinking cursor) = 50 sec. Kernel loader to splashscreen = 20 sec. Splashscreen to login prompt = 55 sec.login prompt to keyboard working = 26 sec. (wireless, wired works right away) Logging in to Desktop = 25 sec. 176 secs = ALMOST 3 MINUTES UNTIL I'M IN THE DESKTOP!!
That's worse than Vista. I've tried a number of things. For the Bios I read disabling floppy helps. I tried installing bootchart to see what's going on but it won't load save the .png file..? I installed bum and disabled some services. I tried profiling in grub... Nothing has made anything any better.
No idea why it takes so long for my wireless keyboard to start working. I'm really not sure where to start here since it's loading so slow at every point of the startup process.

In order to get internet back I have to either restart or uncheck "Enable Networking" and then recheck it.

I'm having issues playing HD videos ( some with 720p level, much more apparent with 1080p level one) The video appears to slow then becomes choppy, becoming de synced from the audio that carries on as normal. This occurs with both VLC player and XBMC, though the latter is better. My specs: Fedora 12 3.2 Ghz P4 processor 1Gig ram Radeon 9800 xt gfx card (I couldn't get the 9.3 ati driver to work)

It's a shared wireless connection using WPA/WPA2 security.I can connect but it's "hit-and-miss" if I can do anything with it. Somedays it works well for a few minutes then has a period of inactivity - then slow - randomly receives...It worked flawlessly when the computer was running Windows7 no one else has connectivity issues but I'm the only one using Linux.

After the restart the GRUB interface I expect to see is no longer there and now it is just a command line that says press tab for more options.I have not got a clue with shell language as I have had no time to learn it as of yet. Do I need to uninstall and reinstall Linux or is there a command that can be typed that boots up the operating system.Even better is there something I can do that can return me to seeing the interface like I was used to.

How to start grub screen of ubuntu 9.10 (guest) at boot. Pressing [ESC]/F1/F2/F5 etc. seems having no function.
I have an 1TB hard drive, half of it for Windows XP SP3, another half for OpenSUSE 11.4. After installing OpenSUSE, it didn't take me much time to notice that there was something wrong with KDE: sometimes it loaded quite fast, as expected, but most of the time I'd have to wait around 1 minute in that loading screen. Then I updated the kernel, as well as KDE itself, but that didn't solve the problem.
After that I tried to start the system using Enlightnment, and it was lightning fast compared to KDE, however, I didn't quite like its interface, and for some reason GNOME refused to start. All that was too frustrating to me, so I gave up and have been using Windows for the last few weeks. Got sick of it now and here I am on OpenSUSE again. Oh, it feels sooo much better! BUT, I'm still with the same problem.
My specs are as follow:
Motherboard: Gigabyte MA78GM-S2H (with updated BIOS, version F11)
Processor: AMD Phenom X3 8450
Memory: 2GB
Videocard: Nvidia Geforce 8500GT (using NVIDIA proprietary drivers)
OpenSUSE 11.4
KDE 4.6.0
Did I forget anything important?
Ps.: I didn't have these problems with Mandriva 2010.2, which, if I'm correct, used the same KDE version.
i have downloaded linux mint 8 and burnt it to disc ive been trying for what seems like for ever to load it but cant find out how to! im using a laptop with windows xp, and an external hard drive so cannot boot linux at start screen can anyone help me do it please.
