I downloaded a debian whezzy media after installation when the system begins to boot the system appears a white screen, and not from any error.
View 2 RepliesI am unable to boot my laptop in the usual way. The fedora emblem in the centre of the screen appears and starts to turn from white to dark blue in the usual way. When it is almost complete it stops.
In order to make the machine boot i hit escape and a message says leaving interactive startup mode. At this point the machine continues to start up.
When i do manage to get it to boot i get the following message repeated many times:
I should also add... The laptop will not close down, once i click switch off the screen turns blue and displays the fedora emblem in the centre. At the top right text says "Shutting Down" but at this point the system hangs.
I'd like to install Fedora 14 64bit as a dual boot on an existing win 7 32bit system. When I boot with the Live CD, after selecting "boot" in the Fedora boot selection menu, I get a grey screen with a white cursor, and the system freezes. I checked the Live CD on my laptop and it worked perfectly.

I have Ubuntu Studio, Ubuntu and XP in 2 HDs. I upgraded Studio to 10.04 and XP doesn't start anymore. I upgraded Ubuntu with and error in the GRUB and then just Studio was booting...With $ sudo mount -t ext4 /dev/sda2 /mnt $ sudo grub-install --root-irectory=/mnt /dev/sda I recover Ubuntu boot... but not XP...at last I removed completely the GRUB2 in the Ubuntu and Studio synaptcs...Now I have all the same but with GRUB 1.97 Ubuntu starts ok, Studio starts after an error message something like: dev/ no such device. and after choosing xp in the list all that appears is a black screen with an white I will post down the sudo fdisk -l and sudo gedit /boot/grub/grub.cfg

My laptop is dell xps m1330.
I installed ubuntu 10.10 alongside Win7 recently, absolutely new to this OS.
Experiencing problems with firefox browser. A plain White blank screen appears only with the titile bar named Firefox. Actually when the web-browser icon is clicked, just a cursor BAR appears stuck inside the extreme left end of the screen (cursor bar something like the one we find in word processors or this blinking line while I type this). I manually have to expand the bar in order to get the firefox browser, which is the plain white screen.
Initially had problems with the missing wireless firmware, reading through this forum I activated the Broadcom driver. But before that, I wired in my laptop to the router and then FIREFOX worked fine, after an update which installed bout 214 updates the firefox got conked.
After succesfully installing Ubuntu 10.4 x32 and rebooting pc hangs on black screen with a flashing white dot in the top left corner of my screen, i've tried installing it twice with the same results.
my setup is: Asus p5q-e,
4 gig of corsair dual ram,
ati 4850 graphics,
onboard audio.
ahci mode
win 7 installed on intel ssd, and xp on a samsung 320 gb sata 2,
i had this configuration running fine for 2 months without boot loaders,
on pc start up i choose from which hdd to boot from.
i installed ubuntu on the samsung drive where it was recognised fine, wiped it all and installed automatically.
pls let me know if there is anything i missed, and advice if possible in what to do.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Gigabyte GA-MA790FX-DS5 with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 and 4GB RAM. The MoBo does not have embedded video. My main video card is a Diamond Radeon HD3650 PCIe. I was unable to initially install F 10 as the screen would blank out (Black Screen) after it would start Anaconda. I attempted to boot using the suggested option of nomodeset with no change of symptoms. I then switched out to an older PCI video card (NVIDIA GeForce FX5200) and was able to go through the install. Now I am attempting to switch back to my preferred card (HD3650) and just before the GDM screen appears the screen goes to solid white and no ability to switch to another VT. I have been unsuccessful at finding any workarounds for this. I thought the issues were with the older proprietary chipsets pre open source of ATI which was supposedly older than the R500 series, but I guess I'm wrong.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently downloaded Ubuntu 9.1 and burned it to a CD. However, I can't seem to get it to boot. I got to the main menu and selected to run it directly from CD, and the Ubuntu symbol showed up saying it was loading things, but then the screen went black and nothing happened even if I waited over 15 minutes. During this time the HDD light was flashing every second or two, and I could see about three white pixels at the top most row of the screen.

Installation went fine but when I boot in Ubuntu I get a MS-DOS like workspace that asks for my login and password. When I give it my credentials,it just says welcome in text and thats it. Now if I go into recovery mode and choose any of the options [normal boot/failsafe-graphics boot] the screen goes completely white. I spent hours searching Google for a solution but nothing worked. what is the problem and also what will be the solution for it.
10.10, and I am havingn interesting issue.During boot, right after POST and right before the bootloader screen with the progress bar and Ubuntu logo, my monitor goes completely white. However, almost instantaneously it starts to fade to black, and eventually goes away. I know it's not the white screen of death that I've heard about, because next I can log in and use my computer just fine.If anyone could point me in the right direction to try to fix this, I would greatly appreciate it. Even filenames related to Ubuntu boot would help, as I'm still learning.

What do? ubuntu 8 worked fine, i ran an update to 10 and it did the same thing. i figured i would try debian since i have it on my other 2 computers. this is being installed on a desktop with a radeon 9800 graphics card. i know the card is the problem because of a driver issue (as i've read) but how do i get it.
A little while ago i bought a magazine with the openSUSE 11.1 distro on it but couldn't install it so i gave up. I am attempting to have another go. The problem is that the os will work fine when booted from CD in fail safe mode and can be installed from there but when out of fail safe mode the system begins to boot but freezes and will do nothing more.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI get past the count down. The bars run across the top. Then my lcd monitor announces it has no signal and goes to sleep. Had this problem with earlier versions of Ubuntu, particularly 8.04. Was fixed in 8.10.
get Fedora 11 up and running?
I installed Ubuntu with a partition that was too small for any practical use, so I installed it again, thinking it would simply overwrite the other one as Windows would do. Obviously not. Now I have two Ubunto installations, neither of which work. I get a White Screen after the Ubuntu thing that shows its progress. If I try to boot from the CD, the Ubuntu thing works again, then I get a completely garbled screen which is totally unreadable and unuseable. I should also mention that I originally installed with a 19" square flatscreen from HP, but have upgraded to an Acer H233H. Since I have no clue what to do whatsover Ubuntu is just taking up space. I'd like to be able to use it, and I'd like to be able to get rid of one or other of the installations.
View 9 Replies View RelatedThe day started as usual until I got the very bright idea to install Ubuntu. A new OS along side W7, that sounded great. I checked some guides on the Internet, it was all very straight forward. Install it and Grub will show you the OS:es when you boot up. I installed Ubuntu, rebooted. After the BIOS messages the screen goes blank and my screen on-button begins to blink, as if trying to find a signal, I press enter, it reboots instantly. After BIOS messages I get to a screen that says "GRUB error: uknown filesystem grub rescue>"
I've looked through everything here and nothing works. I've tried to fix the mbr-thingy using Windows Repair and even though it says "one partition was updated with new boot-thingy" when I reboot, I get into that very same grub rescue. I think my setup has something to do with it. I run RAID0 (2x360Gb hard drives), first having C: at 50Gb and then the rest as F: for programs and such. What I did was that I shrunk the F: part and then used that as partition for Ubuntu. Also please have a look at these screenshots, my partitiontables and such seems completely wacky to the raid: Where should the boot-loader go? I'm very, very new at this. I've had Ubuntu Netbook remix on my netbook for a time but still treat me as an utter beginner.
Having trouble booting Ubuntu 9.10, it gets hung at the first screen where the Ubuntu logo apears. Right now I'm running my Ubuntu 8.10 Live CD.
View 7 Replies View RelatedJust installed OpenSuse 11.4 successfully on my machine (E-machines T6212). Previously attempted to install Ubuntu 11.4 on it as well. Both OS have resulted in my computer screen turning white with blue lines and the entire system freezing; unresponsive to keystrokes and even keyboard CAPS/NUM lights don't respond. Only way I can get system to come back is to physcially unplug it, not even power it off with Power button.
I believe there is something with my graphics card that may be the culprit; ATI Radeon™ Xpress 200M - ATI Radeon™ Xpress 200M Specifications
Because for both OpenSuse and Ubuntu this problem came up.
However with OpenSuse I am able to get to the Terminal Screen via : 1- On startup typing '3' into the screen and getting into 'grub' I think it is called.
I am not able to GUI.
I have read: Configuring Graphics Forum Page l in the forums here as well as looked into the Radeon page for the drivers.
I have also found the following thread here dealing with my particular graphics card but :
1-In my 'xorg.conf.new' file in my /root the correct driver "radeon" seems to be listed.
2-I added "radeon" to my 50-device.conf file in /etc/X11/xorg-conf.d/.. directory
I recently removed Winblows Vista from my laptop and replaced it with Kubuntu 10.10 (I left the recovery partition on there, just in case). When I turn on the computer, the GRUB menu appears, I press enter, then a little flashing underscore appears on the screen in the top left hand corner. After a few seconds, the Kubuntu logo appears and I can log in.But yesterday I replace Kubuntu with Ubuntu 10.10. The Boot process is the same, but the little flashing underscore in the top left hand corner flashes for about 10 seconds longer then Kubuntu 10.10 did, and then a few paragraphs of text appears for a few seconds, then I am logged in automatically.Is this "unusual" boot process anything to worry about, or am I just being a noob.

I have been using Netbook Remix 9.10 and it's been great until this morning.
Today when I turned it on, after Grub and the loading screen, the system brought up a smaller white screen in the corner with my username@machinename"~$ as the first line.
This looks like a terminal window. I can see my folders and use the system but I get no GUI anymore. Not sure why this is happening.
Tried booting into Recovery and updating the system, but to no avail. I've also searched the forums for the last few hours but have not found anything similar.
Anyone have any idea what to do? code...
Not sure if this is relevant to my problem or not. However, I do remember this happening on my desktop version of 9.10... that was solved by installing 9.04.
I am a Linux newbie and did one successful install Ubuntu 9.1 32 bit on my old desktop. Encouraged by that success (and the ease of it), this week I built my own system, which will be my primary system. I am trying to install Ubuntu 9.1 (AMD 64 version) and after the partition selection screen (I chose to partition the entire disk), I immediately get a white blank screen. Then nothing happens. I also tried with Ubuntu 9.1 32 bit, XUbuntu 9.1 64, Ubuntu 9.04 all had the same results.
Not sure if the hardware specs are required, but here they are:
1) Motherboard: MSI KA 780 G
2) Processor: AMD Athlon II X4 630
3) Memory: Corsair 2 x 2 GB, 800 MHz twinx 6400 c6
4) Harddrive: Hitachi sata 300, 1 TB
In desperation, I have started windows XP installation and that seems to progress fine at its leisurely pace. Its formatting the drive right now. During one of the attempts, it did install something*, since after that I see a new ubuntu partition after that. But when I boot from hard disk I get a black screen with cursor. I tried to search thru the forums and nobody seemed to have this exact problem, one guy got a white screen with cursor after a graphics card install, which is not the same. I dont want to go back to windows.
I have a Dell Vostro 200. Have been running Ubuntu on it for 18 months - no probs. Recently it became very slow to boot. 5-10 minutes before Ubuntu startup screen appears. Have installed Ubuntu 10.10 (on a reformatted hard drive) today. No change. It's fairly certain to be a hardware problem but I don't know where to start.

View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter installing 11.04, I have enabled the Nvidia proprietary drivers and I see this (picture of problem is attached) at startup and shutdown. About nine out of 10 times, I cannot get to the log in screen (even in recovery mode); however, on the tenth try, everything works properly and I can even play games, ex. Braid and World of Goo. I get about 3700 fps running glxgears.
I have run nvidia-settings and dpkg and various other things in an attempt to get it sorted out. Additional Drivers says that the "driver is activated but not currently in use." I'm not sure why that is.
the power went off in my house for a split second but it was enough for my computer to die as such linux refuses to boot, i reinstalled ubuntu 3 times now and still nothing.. the only way i can get it to do anything regarding booting is if i have a windows xp install disc in the dvd drive. other than that, bios posts and then i get a pure black screen with a white prompt and it sits there i did however find the boot info script and ran it so here is the results:

I am trying to install CentOS 5.2 on an HP rp5700 desktop unit. These units were originally sold as a Point of Sales unit I believe, but HP also markets it as a high life cycle server for SMB market.I tried to load CentOS on this unit via CD (created from downloaded ISO of course). It presents the initial CentOS banner page and waits for the obligatory "enter" to continue. It begins the boot process up to discovering the PCI stuff and just locks up, no response. I have to power down to restart.Since this does not even get to the point of installing. I am at a loss what to do next. View 3 Replies View RelatedI am running Debian 8 with the Xfce Desktop Environment.
I was unhappy with the lock screen on Xfce so I removed xscreensaver and wrote a short custom locking script, which basically involves using i3lock along with some additional commands to make things pretty. I was able to change the default locking behaviour by modifying /usr/bin/xflock4 to run my_lock.sh.
Unfortunately, no lock screen appears whenever I suspend ie after waking the computer from suspension I don't need to type a password in. I would like to force Xfce to lock the screen with my_lock.sh before actually suspending, but I don't know how to do this.
I know that Xfce runs Code: Select allxfce4-session-logout -s when suspending, but xfce4-session-logout is a binary file which I cannot edit.
