Ubuntu Installation :: OS Screen Won't Show After POST?
Jan 22, 2011
OS: Windows 7Problem: Want to dual boot Ubuntu and Win 7, but OS screen won't show after POST.I need some assistance in installing Ubuntu 10.10. This would be my first Linux installation, all I have done otherwise was virtualize Ubuntu 9.10.I have tried installing two times now but I can't get the boot screen to pop up for when I dual boot and check my OS.So here is what I did, not ever partitioning a drive before for duel booting:1. Go into Disk Manager and shrink the volume of the main HD by 25GB (I was going to use this for Ubuntu)2. I then inserted the Live CD with Ubuntu 10.10 on it and proceeded to install, however when choosing where to install it, I chose the advanced options and chose the partition that I set aside as free space for Linux (25GB -- 25600MB).
3. I set the boot loader to this partition, as the other partitions are the w7(windows 7) loader and the label of the HD. The partition was labled dev/shd5 or something like that. But when I am done installing and try to boot normally the screen where I am to choose which OS to boot does not appear.Question:What should I do to dual boot? I also tried selecting boot alongside another (or similar) and set the same settings as using the dev/shd5 free space that I allocated (25GB) and placing the boot loader on the same partition, which is not the main partition.I do not want to overwrite the Windows Partition as I have things on there that I will need,

I run a live cd I downloaded, right? Everything goes fine - it installs with no real issues whatsoever, when all of a sudden after the install it boots to nothing but the famous black screen with a white, blinking dash. So, what do I do? It was installed on a Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop, and I ended up completely wiping the XP drive to do it

I have installed Debian Jessie 8.0.3 64-bit net install on a MSI CX620. Installation went fine but trying to boot it up the first time nothing but a black screen shows up. I've tried:
Holding shift on startup - Nothing
Press down all keys - Not much, only ctrl+alt+delete makes the screen turn off and then on again.
I'm thinking that I had secure boot on which I now after installation see could be a problem, but I didn't think it would be a problem as I could just go into bios and turn it off, but seeing now that I can't even go into bios it may be a problem.

I've got a dual-booting system with Windows 7 and Opensuse 11.2. I had a few other random kernels so I edited /boot/grub/menu.lst to remove them. This was fine after a reboot, then I went to YaST and changed the default boot partition to Windows, because I had edited the MBR and put Windows above the other boot partitions, YaST changed "default" to 0.
Now after a restart the Boot Loader doesn't appear, I just have a flashing cursor. When I try to boot from an OpenSuse installation disc and try repair the Repair Kernel loads but freezes on the OpenSuse splash screen. I've heard this is due to the fact I have an ATI Radeon card, if I hold shift during the CD load to prevent the graphical interface of the CD loading. I can type to boot "rescue" but it freezes on "starting udev...". Essentially I just need to be able to edit menu.lst back to the backup I made or change the "default" value back to 1.

When restarting my dual boot system I wanted to start Win XP. Scrolling down the list I think I hit the left arrow key by mistake. I got what I think is the recovery menu. I chose #1, Continue Normal Boot (at least that's what I think it was). Then I was prompted for my login and password. The system accepted those and seemed happy but will go no further.
I've tried entering 'exit'. This simply causes the system to ask for login and pword again. see the attachment of my screen. I've searched the forum and haven't found a similar situation with a solution.I am reluctant to pull the power to shut down. Until this my system has been very stable and reliable.

Following some hardware maintenance, I had to swap my drives out earlier to test a drive. Initially I needed to change the PSU, and I wanted to test an old hard drive to ensure it was good - it seemed like an ideal opportunity since I'd got the case openPSU swapped out ok (from a 600 to 750W), hard drive failed to respond, put the other drive(s) back in - raid 0(?, subject to conf, striped anyhow) and nothing. I did adjust the bios to account for raid/lack of and it did prove problematic more than once. However, I'm back with an almost functional machine but screen res is very low - 1024, as opposed to the 1600 I'm used to.
I can't adjust it, but all elseing ok it seems (although I've not yet checked soundSo... I've saved my home partition to a backup drive, but here are some relevant questions:How do I restore my resolution? Drivers are the same as they were before I changed the drivesIf I can't, then I'm ok starting from scratch but how do I efficiently save my data (free, can't pay for stuff) so that my new install "feels" the same?

Basically I had windows 8.1 running on my fujitsu lifebook A532 laptop and wanted to dual boot kali linux alongside it, however upon installing the linux it deleted EVERYTHING! on my laptop, the grub bootloader only showed kali linux to choose from...
I then decided kali linux is too complicated for me and decided to delete everything and reinstall windows 8 again however I was surprised that my bios screen looks diffrent also I can not edit the boot sequence.
If I press f2 or f12 it takes me to a screen with a tab named Boot menu and its written on it debian and every time I press enter on it it takes me back to this same screen...
I can not boot from cd or usb!

I installed a Raid 2+0 a couple of days ago with windows 7, and everything was working fine until today. I left my computer for a couple of hours and when i came back all i see is this black screen with a blinking cursor, then i tried everything on the bios but every time i tried to boot it kept stuck there, right after the bios POST.Then i tried changing the SATA ports, that was something that fixed similar problems on my old Mobo, but this is strange because this mobo has 1 week, and the HD's (2x seagate 500gb) have 2 days, so they should be fine.
Then i tried with my ubuntu lucid lynx live cd, it has saved my life many times, it always works flawlessly and i thought i could use it to restore the boot files, but i was very surprised when it failed as well, it pops a message saying something like "invalid user pwsuid "user: unknown"{0}". Tried it many times with no luck, only that same message...Now i managed to boot from a "slitaz" linux dist. thats about 30mb, it has many useful tools.I can see the partitions/HD's on the Gparted and mount applications, but i still i havent managed to mount the raid i had on my Windows 7 install, im a bit scared of losing data, and i dont even know how to do it.Is there any way to fix thisrom the slitaz live cd?Maybe i could mount the Raid and then restore the Boot files from the slitaz live cd? I have a windows image i could use on the Raid, and i could copy the image files to a partition, make it primary, active and bootable...I really dont know, maybe that wont help either because the ubuntu live cd couldnt boot, i really dont know what whats going on and what could be the cause of this... maybe a worm/virus

I am using apache2 with subversion and trying to get post commit script to run an svn update command. All svn commands seem to work fine manually
Everything used to work fine but then the server ip changed and I can no longer access it with the web name and have to use the ip directly
I am using tortoise svn with vista on my work machine
Here is the script
#!/bin/sh
export LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8
/usr/bin/svn update /home/common/webroot/bob
Here is the result.
Command: Commit
Modified: C:UsersMattDesktopcheckout - bobindex.php
Sending content: C:UsersMattDesktopcheckout - bobindex.php
Completed: At revision: 63
Error: post-commit hook failed (exit code 1) with output:

I think what i need to do is update the certifcate for the apache2, but I'm not sure how to do this, where to put it, and then which of the thousand apache config lines needs to be changed

Everytime I attempt to install anything, in any way, I'm given the following error message:
E: lib32nss-mdns: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2
E: wine1.2: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
I went into Synaptics Package Manager and told it to uninstall WINE in case that was what was causing the problems. It sort of half-uninstalled-it then gave me that exact same error message.I have two threads currently open on the forums - adjusting laptop brightness and flashing BIOS - and both problems hit a brick wall because of this same error message.

I'm using couple of Intel Core i7 based workstations. Here is one such example:Processor: Core i7-870 (Lynfield) Motherboard: Gigabyte P55A-UD6RAM: Corsair DDR3-1600 - 8GB (4 sticks). Graphics: Sapphire Toxic ATI 5850 - 2GB - DDR5Am always used to 32-bit Linux installation. Now I would like to go with the FC14 64-bit on this workstation. My question is:a) How different would be a FC 64-bit compared to 32-bit (8GB RAM issues I faced in Windows 7 32-bit)b) What would be potential problems during the installation and/or post installation. I get these questions in my mind because of Motherboard and Graphics card support and also thinking about applications (issues) on FC14.

Downloaded and copied to a usb pen drive the latest debian testing snapshot netinstall iso:
wget url
then
dd if=debian-testing-amd64-netinst.iso of=/dev/sdb
Everything went fine, even the install part. After the 1st boot, problems started. I've never seen so much errors after a first install and probably they are all reported.
1. ata_id[297]: HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed for '/dev/sdb'
2. mkdir: cannot create directory `/run/udev/rules.d/': Read-only file system
3. startpar: service(s) returned failure: udev ... failed!
4. INIT: Id "co" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
5. eth0 doesn't automatically start; one has to start it via ifup eth0
After that, installed a minimal xserver-xorg-core, xserver-xorg-video-radeon and kde-plasma-desktop.
I'm unable to use the newly DE environment, the screen just freezes, I'm guessing because of the udev error.
I have to restart via Magic SysRQ key:
Alt+PrtScr+S > Alt+PrtScr+U > Alt+PrtScr+B

This morning I updated my system as prompted by the update manager. Upon reboot, I got "grub:sh>". After doing some googling and a bit of trial and error, I managed to figure out that I can manually boot successfully by executing the following commands.
Code:
grub:sh> linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic root=/dev/sda1 loop=/ubuntu/disks/root.disk ro
grub:sh> initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.31-14-generic

I'm a Ubuntu Desktop newbie, and I wiped XP Media Center off my old HP Pavillion Dv8000 last night to install 10.04 LTS. With very little tweaking, I got everything to run right including wireless, but now I notice that I can't run any new (post-install) programs that I install through Ubuntu Software Center. In fact, I haven't tried installing any other way, but all software that was part of the default installation works fine, but these programs won't run:VLC Media PlayerSkypeStarsWhen I click on the programs to run them, the other apps slow or freeze for 30-45 seconds as if the computer is contemplating starting them, and then nothing. No errors, no shell or blank window - nothing. They just don't run.I only created one user account at O/S install and as far as I can tell is the SU, so I can't see it being a permissions issue.

I downloaded the Bisigi Theme packs for Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic and I noticed I can't get the logic screen to show up. Anyone know what's wrong? I was sure hoping I could use their login screens. I heard that in Karmic you can't change it? That's really a let down if it is, not to mention they don't even let user know that you can't change it? Or Can it be changed? Anyone have a hack or code for it?

For some odd reason, I cannot post on the ubuntu forum and the LinuxMint forum. Yea, I know.... the irony... I am using Mozilla and have tried Chromium, but that did not fix my problem. When I click on "submit" to post a thread, the page will just say "loading..." and nothing happens for a really long time. Does anyone know what is up? I tried posting on one other forum that I go to often and it seems to work out fine. I haven't tried any other forums though.

I'm trying to perform an install of F14 (fresh install over F13), and it has been showing "running post-installation scripts" for 1 1/2 hours now. I am wondering if this is unusual and what the implications might be of power-cycling and rebooting. I'd note this is a fairly fast machine with 2 quad-core Xeons (I forget their model number).

I'm trying to relocate my home directory which currently resides at the default, root location /home/user.
My Systems Specs:
Karmic64
Root resides on a Raid0 LVM MD0
NEW Drive resides on Raid0 LVM MD1
I installed a new disk on a LVM(Logical Volume Manager), and now want to move my default home directory to the new location. I did rsync my home directory from the OLD to the NEW. When I do update my /etc/fstab with the NEW home location, I recieve errors upon rebooting, that certainly relate to permission issues, including some from Nautilus that mentions permissions issues...
I also tried to update the USERS/GROUP Manager with the NEW location but after reopening the USERS/GROUP manager, I can see the original location has been reverted back. I can create a new user and succesfully map their home directory to the NEW home location on my MD1 LVM. Any links on home to remap their existing HOME directory to a new location?
