Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Start Post-Install Programs In 10.04 LTS?
Oct 2, 2010
I'm a Ubuntu Desktop newbie, and I wiped XP Media Center off my old HP Pavillion Dv8000 last night to install 10.04 LTS. With very little tweaking, I got everything to run right including wireless, but now I notice that I can't run any new (post-install) programs that I install through Ubuntu Software Center. In fact, I haven't tried installing any other way, but all software that was part of the default installation works fine, but these programs won't run:VLC Media PlayerSkypeStarsWhen I click on the programs to run them, the other apps slow or freeze for 30-45 seconds as if the computer is contemplating starting them, and then nothing. No errors, no shell or blank window - nothing. They just don't run.I only created one user account at O/S install and as far as I can tell is the SU, so I can't see it being a permissions issue.
I have been running OpenSuSE 11.1 with the proprietary VNIDIA driver for a year or so and recently upgraded my internet connection from slow old dialup. I installed some software upgrades this made possible but the process failed on some point (I didn't make a note of the details) and the next time I tried to log on it booted up to the CLI. I tried startx and got the message;
using config file "etc/x11/xorg.conf" no devices detected Fatal server error no screens found giving up xinit: Connection refused (errno 111): unable to connect to X server
I'm trying to relocate my home directory which currently resides at the default, root location /home/user.
My Systems Specs: Karmic64 Root resides on a Raid0 LVM MD0 NEW Drive resides on Raid0 LVM MD1
I installed a new disk on a LVM(Logical Volume Manager), and now want to move my default home directory to the new location. I did rsync my home directory from the OLD to the NEW. When I do update my /etc/fstab with the NEW home location, I recieve errors upon rebooting, that certainly relate to permission issues, including some from Nautilus that mentions permissions issues...
I also tried to update the USERS/GROUP Manager with the NEW location but after reopening the USERS/GROUP manager, I can see the original location has been reverted back. I can create a new user and succesfully map their home directory to the NEW home location on my MD1 LVM. Any links on home to remap their existing HOME directory to a new location?
I run a live cd I downloaded, right? Everything goes fine - it installs with no real issues whatsoever, when all of a sudden after the install it boots to nothing but the famous black screen with a white, blinking dash. So, what do I do? It was installed on a Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop, and I ended up completely wiping the XP drive to do it
Looks like I missed defining a /home dir during installation. It's been a while I have a spare partition now that I'd really love to use. Can you specify this still, or is it only allowed during an install?
I have installed Debian Jessie 8.0.3 64-bit net install on a MSI CX620. Installation went fine but trying to boot it up the first time nothing but a black screen shows up. I've tried:
Holding shift on startup - Nothing
Press down all keys - Not much, only ctrl+alt+delete makes the screen turn off and then on again.
I'm thinking that I had secure boot on which I now after installation see could be a problem, but I didn't think it would be a problem as I could just go into bios and turn it off, but seeing now that I can't even go into bios it may be a problem.
I performed a clean install of Fedora 15 from DVD and it goes fine until the end when the install program says to reboot the computer. Once I do that, the computer hangs before Grub loads, i.e. just after all of the BIOS messages, so there isn't any error message to indicate what is wrong. I had no issues with Fedora 14.
When I restart my computer the following messages come up: __________________________________________________ _ init: usplash post-start process (2221) terminated with status 1 * Stopping ClamAV virus database updater freshclan
I am trying to install fedora 10 kickstart on my server. But I can't, because my kickstart installation hangs at post install scripts. It is not showing any message & stopped.
After trying out ubuntu for a while (and messing something up that required I reinstall), I installed karmic using the encrypt home directory option. Now I can't run several programs, such as Computer Janitor, SBackup, Software Sources, and Synaptic Package Manager (I can run Synaptic only if I launch it through a terminal using "sudo synaptic"). All of these programs worked flawlessly for me when I didn't have an encrypted install. I am very new to linux, the join date to the left is about when I started trying ubuntu
Anyone know of an easy & practical way to re-package (in to debs) all the programs I have installed on a system so I can copy them on to a disc & install on another machine? Basically so I only ever download the programs I want once but can install them as often as I need. I'm sure I read that by just copying the /usr directory to a target machine may work (although I haven't tried I doubt it). I've also read that it may be possable to simply copy a whole Ubuntu installation to another drive & use it in another machine.
I recently bought a wireless-N broadban router ( Linsksys by cisco, model WRT160N) and want to know how to configure it in kubuntu. I tried looking in Kpackage, but there are many programs and I don't know which one to install.
Big n00b on Ubuntu 11.04, and tried to look around on the web for guids to install simple programs but I didn't find any good ones. So of you guys have any guids how to install program like uTorrent, AIM and VLC it would be very muvh.
Where do I find the linux-source package and the linux-headers package? Are they on the CD that I can copy to /usr/src (is that the right place...)? Or do I need to download them from the old-releases.ubuntu.com site?
The issue now is that the nVidia installer from their website wants the source code to build the right packages for this machine, however, I do not have the src directory with the source code that it is looking for. Is there some way to give this too it now?
I have a VPS with Ubuntu 10.04 and acces to it via putty. Besides postgres database there should be running two java program which I wrote. It works fine from command line. But I need them to start automatically at boot time.
I have some programs which I want to start up immediately when I get my computer going. Can I make Ubuntu to do it for me automatically? How? I want it to start when the computer is starting up, see.
This worked, but now I want to remove some start up programs using the command line. Can someone point me in the right direction to what I need to do for this?
I'm assuming that default start up programs are not links in the ~/.kde/Autostart folder because when I run:
Code: ls -a ~/.kde/Autostart I only find the files that I have set to start up.
Why wouldnt someone just add programs to ubuntus startup instead of using a script?Im configuring deluge and to have the web ui and daemon run at boot I added them to startup and they are working fine.
I am setting up a streaming audio server. I would like to have Darkice and sc_serv (Shoutcast server) start automagically on boot.
I have set Xubuntu (10.04) to auto login
Both Darkice and sc_serv are command line apps and I would like them to each run in their own terminal window so I can monitor any status messages they produce. For instance sc_serv displays connections disconnections with time connected, and current number of listeners, and I want to see that.
One important note: sc_serv must be up and running before Darkice can be started.
am running 10.10 64bit and I am wanting to change a few wayssome programs start up on boot, they are as follows:1. make NetworkManager not load onboot and require me to manually start it in the command line2. make bluetooth not start on boot and allow to manually start it from the command line3. make networking not boot on startand start manually from command line I have been trying to search on google but most of thereads I find are about removing things completely and the few that werent did not work for what I want to do.
since it started i cannot launch software-center, vlc, emesene... they all stopped working... i checked the logs of synaptic to see if i removed a python package and i didn't. i tried selecting all python packages for reinstall, and it didn't help! i really don't want to reinstall ubuntu.
I am trying to make a wifey friendly way to click on something in the desktop and have it start 2 programs. One program is Skype, the other is gedit which opens a file with notes we have made about using Skype
I don't know if it is just me but it seems like Ubuntu takes a long time to start up programs. For example, it takes me 10 seconds to start up "Ubuntu software center". My computer is a relatively fast one. It has 4 gb of ram and an intel core duo processor. I didn't install that many programs. Does anyone know what might be the source of the problem and how to fix it?
