Ive been using it for a few days and it kept reminding me to update some files. (about 200mb worth) after it finished installing i rebooted but it won't show me a login screen. it only shows me a commmand line. it allows to 'exit' and then it boots windows.

I've got a dual-booting system with Windows 7 and Opensuse 11.2. I had a few other random kernels so I edited /boot/grub/menu.lst to remove them. This was fine after a reboot, then I went to YaST and changed the default boot partition to Windows, because I had edited the MBR and put Windows above the other boot partitions, YaST changed "default" to 0.
Now after a restart the Boot Loader doesn't appear, I just have a flashing cursor. When I try to boot from an OpenSuse installation disc and try repair the Repair Kernel loads but freezes on the OpenSuse splash screen. I've heard this is due to the fact I have an ATI Radeon card, if I hold shift during the CD load to prevent the graphical interface of the CD loading. I can type to boot "rescue" but it freezes on "starting udev...". Essentially I just need to be able to edit menu.lst back to the backup I made or change the "default" value back to 1.
I'm a beginner with Linux. I'm using the version of Ubuntu 10.10 installed in a notebook HP Pavilion tx 2000 (Turion 64 x2). My Ubuntu is 32 bits.
I'm passing for the following situation:
When I turn on my notebook, if it is running on battery (even with the battery has 100% of charge), a login / password screen does not appear, and the screen goes dark and nothing more I can do (that I knew!). So I re-start the machine.
However, if the notebook is plugged into electrical energy (with or without battery), a login / password appears normally.
If, with the notebook plugged into electrical energy, I log in Ubuntu operating system, then great. After loaded the operating system, I can turn off electrical energy and the notebook works normally (only with battery). In other words, just the login screen that is with this electrical energy problem.
Basically I had windows 8.1 running on my fujitsu lifebook A532 laptop and wanted to dual boot kali linux alongside it, however upon installing the linux it deleted EVERYTHING! on my laptop, the grub bootloader only showed kali linux to choose from...
I then decided kali linux is too complicated for me and decided to delete everything and reinstall windows 8 again however I was surprised that my bios screen looks diffrent also I can not edit the boot sequence.
If I press f2 or f12 it takes me to a screen with a tab named Boot menu and its written on it debian and every time I press enter on it it takes me back to this same screen...
I can not boot from cd or usb!
I have a dual boot configuration (WinXp and Ubuntu 9.10) on a PC (my video card is an ATI Radeon 4850), i have been configuring ubuntu for the past 5 days and everything was working fine. Today i installed Screenlets (through synaptic manager), and i was adding a screenlet when the screen froze. I could move the cursor, but couldn't click anything. I left it for about 5 minutes to see if anything changes, and since it was still frozen, i did a hard reset (restart from the button).
In the grub menu i chose the normal linux boot (not the recovery mode), it loads up the welcome splash screen (with the tribal sound and the bar moving), and then the little circle cursor appears, turns into the normal arrow cursor and it hangs. I can move the cursor, but the screen is stuck with the ubuntu splash screen.I restarted (again from the button) and went into recovery mode, but in the recovery console i can't select any option from the keyboard (i tried hitting the cursor keys, enter, nothing happens). I hit ctrl+alt+delete and it restarted the system (so the keyborad does function). In XP i found a recommendation to restart the Xserver, so i rebooted in the Ubuntu splash screen, hit ctrl+alt+F2, logged in, typed the command i found:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorgrestarted (sudo reboot), and got to the splash screen, which after playing the tribal sounds, turned semi-transparent (i could see the desktop wallpaper, taskbars and a black rectangle where my cairo-dock should appear), but again it freezed, no cursor. I hit ctrl+alt+F2 to go into console mode, and uninstalled screenlets (since it was the last thing i installed before the initial freeze).Screenlets uninstalled properly (i used sudo apt-get remove screenlets) so i rebooted, but it still freezes at the ubuntu screen splash (this time it wasn't transparent, just the standard screen splash). So i tried getting into console mode again, but this time my screen displays lines in a lot of colors, randomly (probably a failure from the video adapter)
Is there a way to create a user that will not show up in the GDM login screen? This user also needs to have sudo access
View 6 Replies View Relatedi have upgrade ubunto 9 to 10.04 so that in log in section there is a KDE session appears. when i log on in KDE then it will came a new KDE screen with drive icon and setting icon also desktop icon.. unfortunately i click on there and these desktop screen disappear.. so how to do for come back KDE in right position.Now when i login in KDE it will show total dark screen.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI upgraded kubuntu from lucid(10.04) to Meerkat(10.10). problem is login screen doesnt show up on boot. A black screen shows, Ctrl-Alt-F1 doesnt show the tty1. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace doesnt work either, neither does Ctrl-Alt-Del.
I switch off the computer and reboot into recovery mode, I get the graphical recovery menu, on choosing boot normally, I get the tty1 login prompt.
Upon logging, I check /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old. There is no error, nvidia 260.xx driver is loaded successfully and all other modules are loaded as well.
I have done 'apt-get update' to see if there is any update in repository but there isnt.
How do I control which users are seen from the login screen?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI had Kubuntu 10.04 installed, I screwed up a bunch of stuff in it and it would hang after the login screen. I reinstalled Kubuntu 10.10 (formatted the partition with Kubuntu on it) but I kept my /home partition in tact. NOw, when I log in, i starts to load, and then KICKS ME OUT, back into the log in screen. The user does exist, I can access the user from the console, but when I try to get into Kubuntu, it kicks me back out to login. What on earth is going on? I've tried failsafe mode as well as regular login. neither works.

Got it on a CD and was using it as "Try Ubuntu" instead of installing it for good (I still wanted to see if there were memory issues or HDD issues with my desktop, before I installed it for good).Anyway, I would shut down the pc after about 2 or 3 days and redo the CD install (try ubuntu option) again and add all the plugins etc.Kids used this for playing some games on friv or nickjr.The real issue - of late, when I try to start the PC and boot from the CD, I am getting a LOGIN screen instead of the regular option to install from CD or Try the Ubuntu.

In 99% of the cases I use "Peter" and have explicitely to click on Peter. Only then the password entry field appears and I can enter it.
This is somehow user unfriendly. Can I define somehow a default user (here: Peter) and show immediately the password entry field (and place the cursor inside)?
We've just installed debian xfce lxde....after all this time to get it....when we boot up to the login screen it keeps saying wrong uder name or password

View 5 Replies View RelatedFedora 12 randomly crashes after a fresh install.Everything is left at its default during the installation except I install KDE and not Gnome.When I try to boot I hit esc at the splash screen to see where it hangs, but it never hangs at the same spot twice. Sometimes it hangs and sometimes it restarts. Its crashed everywhere from starting udev to the login screen.
I've been using kubuntu for the past year because I have the same problem with F10 and F11.
I dual boot with Windows 7 for games.

i am having a boot problem with opensuse.i installed a theme named suse-elegant under personal settings(configure desktop)-system administration-login screen.
i had also added vbox users(i ticked vboxusers) under yast-security and users-user and group management-edit-details to make virtual box work.
i want to check that installed theme so i restarted my laptop.after the restart opensuse taking too long time to boot
note:the login theme also not working.
after the boot i restored defaults in login screen themes.it is also not working.
i don't know which cause this problem(vboxusers or login theme).i am also seeing a root user has been added in my login area.i tried opensuse failsafe also.
ive recently installed ubuntu 10.10.. but it does show any boot screen..even in ubuntu 10.04 it showed no boot screen..it just displays a black screen for 5-6 second..why is this happening?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am using Ubuntu 10.04.1 and I run it 24 hours a day. Recently one morning I went to my laptop and opened the screen but the login screen wouldn't appear. Anytime the cursor appeared, HDD activity would go to 100%. I'm assuming this because the HDD light on my laptop was permanently on. So I made the dumb decision of just holding the power button down and turning it off. When I turned it back on, I noticed it came to a command prompt type screen listing "initramfs" at the bottom apparently wanting me to input a command. I did a lot of research and couldn't find much of anything that would help me. I read about GRUB, superblocks, fsck, e2fsck, etc.. . I tried all of those and nothing has worked so far. Any ideas? I did notice one thing. When I went into the actual install with the livecd, it told me the drive was /dev/sda5, but in Disk Utility on the livecd, it told me it was /dev/sda1

Back then I changed the background to full black for both the preboot screen and login screen.Now after upgrading it changed it to the purple color screen. I am wondering how I can change back the background color?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm fairly new to Ubuntu and I like it a lot. However, there's a graphical error which started to happen after the very first bootup. The startup screen (the purple one with the 5 dots that appear) isn't showing anymore. It is replaced by some console technical guff scrolling down my screen (which isn't a problem, because Ubuntu itself works fine, but it just looks a bit rough). Again, on shutdown, it displays some amalgamated mix of more technical jargon, and a terribly lo-res version of the shutdown screen.
Is there any way I can fix this?
I just installed the latest updates for Fedora 14, and a restart was necessary so I did. Then, it didn't reboot! It hung when the cursive Fedora "f" was there for about 15 minutes. I had guessed that maybe it was doing an automatic fsck disk check, but I'm not sure.
Anyway, I couldn't change to tty2 etc while this was happening and for all I knew, the system was frozen. Is there a way to see the load progress (the text) while booting?
FYI, after 1 extremely slow but eventually successful boot, everything is back to normal with rapid boot times.
I have used Ubuntu since 7-4; I now have 10.4. However, in the last week I have been taken to the login screen three times. This could be potentially calamitous. Ctrl+Alt +Backspace have by default been disable since 9-4. There is no way I am pressing atl+Prtscr +K. I wonder if there is a new zap command in 10.4, and if so, how to disable it. I have never found the need to go back back to the login window. I am generally using the command line when doing this.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have just did an upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10. I am planning to go to 10.04 . After the upgrade everything was ok but I noticed the GRUB was still legacy. So I updated my GRUB to GRUB2. Now when I boot, after entering my logon-id and password, it just brings me back to the login-id screen (to logon on). Any indication of what is wrong and how I should fix this ?
I have no encryptions. [added comments] Currently reading thread about login loop bug with 9.10 Followed instructions about possible missing pre-release update but even if it did do updates, I am still login screen looping. Doing additional researches until someone answers with the fix.

I am at a loss trying to figure out the options to not show the scrolling boot messages during the boot-up of Clonezilla. Is there a way to have a loading splash screen or even have a static logo that is displayed during the boot process? I have my automated recovery method all ready to go short this one last feature. I have searched all over and am coming up empty on this one.
View 4 Replies View RelatedHave just installed 9.10, again, many failed attempts previously.Cannot get to boot up and show menu on dual boot with Vista initially,However when I delete the grubenv file the system boots ok and works fine.But does not show the grub menu to choose boot up choices.Got the information to delete the file on some posts elsewhere about booting problem, and tried a longshot and got into Ubuntu for the first time from trying to install now for 3 months!The problem is the file grubenv is created each time so on subsequent boot ups the sytem fails to boot again.The Grub version is 1.97 beta 4, most up to date for Karmic I think, I have seen a version 1.98 but dont think its for Karmic?
Is there a way to modify the grub.cfg file to stop this problem ( all posts say dont touch this file??Or install a script to delete the grubenv file on shutdown as a workaround for me, (I have no idea how to do this whatsoever, I'm not familiar with linux at all)I did read that this problem was fixed/patched in Grub version 2, but dosn't seem.so on my system afetr I updated it when I got into Ubuntu.I couldnt find the patch or fix, I got the information I am on about from this post:URL...It seems to say it was fixed or patched by Colin Watson reading through, but I don't really understand whats being said or how to get the patch on my system if indeed there is one?Sorry for being a bit thick about all this, its a bit beyond my brain now, hope somebody can help out as I have enjoyed my brief bit of fun in Ubuntu.
