Oct 10, 2010I used wubi to install the dual booting, after I have upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 when I launch linux it goes direct to grup.

May 7, 2011Machine specifics: Win Vista with Ubuntu 10.04 installed via Wubi. Upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 - killed Grub. Following other posts, I booted off a 10.04 Live CD and ran boot_info_script. The results are below. It's telling me core.img cannot be found - can someone please tell me what to do next (before I blunder on and make things worse!)

Jun 8, 2010Had v9.x installed alongside Windows XP SP3 install. Have not used it that much since install.
Got the bug to upgrade to v10.
Went through the upgrade process, everything seemed fine.
At the end of the install process asked which dev to install GRUB onto - I selected only one drive, the wrong one of course, and the reboot failed.

Have LiveCD running now to post. Ran Info_boot Script.sh - results below.
Will reinstalling v10 from Live CD fix this? Will this use Wubi or just go through normal install process? Or is there an easier fix to install GRUB on the correct drive to get the dual boot choice of Windows XP and Ubuntu back.
Naturally I need to get back to Windows ASAP - it's the net gateway and print server for my home/office setup.

Jan 10, 2011I upgraded my dell inspiron 6000 from ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 then rebooted and now I am stuck at the grub prompt. I am able to boot from a flash drive and have run the boot script. This laptop did not have a dual boot system on it but it did have windows on it at one time, converted to ubuntu.

Everything has been working fine for a a long time but yesterday I tried to delete an unused partition through the Disk Utility in ubuntu (System->Adminstration->Disk Utility) and everything was messed up. I used to get the "Grub error: Unknown filesystem". I managed to create an ubuntu bootable usb and followed some tutorials for fixing grub but all i managed to do is to get another error: "Grub error: No such disc". After some experimentation i got
"Grub stage 1.5" which gave me a grub> command prompt./dev/sda is the drive containing Windows and Ubuntu.

Ubuntu Installation :: "Upgraded" To Windows 7 And Now Can't See GRUB And Lucid / Fix It?
May 16, 2010I'm at my wit's end with Windows this morning. I upgraded to Lucid a few days ago. Everything went very smoothly. Then I spent the greater part of Friday and Saturday "upgrading" to Windows 7 from Vista. I chose the "update" option which was only supposed to update to 7 rather than overwrite the entire HD. Now, GRUB doesn't load and I don't see my Linux partition. HOWEVER, it appears as though the partitions are still there! When I look in Winbloze at the HDs, it shows the Windoze HD as the partition size I made it when installing Ubuntu.
Any ideas on how to recover the awesomeness that is Ubuntu from this situation? Or do I need to install it fresh?

Dec 16, 2010I updated yesterday and now when I start my laptop it goes in to grub rescue mode. I have booted from a 'live cd' and thought I could repair grub from there. In gparted however the partition with ubuntu (sda1) is seen as unknown file system, in terminal when I list the partition table it shows up as FAT16 type. When I try a grub-install it gives this error message:

Fedora Installation :: Upgraded To FC10 - Video - Fatal Server Error: No Screens Found Gotta Go, X Session Getting Corrupt
Jun 13, 2009I must say, the RPMfusion version of the Nvdia driver package work better with FC10 than they did under FC9 for me, which is to say: they work at all. Still get corrupted output after a few hours of work, but I imagine that's just the underlying weakness of the Nvidia driver bubbling up. Either way, now I have other problems:
First off, the Intel driver for my onboard video setup has stopped working entirely. The attempt to bring up X on the Intel setup gets me to the KDE login screen and locks the machine up hard (poweroff required). A look at the xorg.0.log shows that the server seems to be stuck in a loop trying to determine the valid video properties for the session.
Here's my xorg.conf, BTW. I have it setup to perform different configurations depending on which DefaultServerLayout line gets uncommented (lines 4 - 6). If anybody has a better way of doing this, I'm all ears. While we're on my xorg.conf, pleas view lines 64-67 and/or 75-77. This is my quickie way of changing drivers (again, all ears) which brings us to the next problem, neither the nv or nouveau drivers work with my system. Interestingly enough, both drivers tend to fail in the same relative spot in the process, I think. Please refer to line 207 of this xorg.0.log with the nv driver or line 140 of this xorg.0.log from the nouveau setup. Either way, both sessions die with the same message: (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration. Fatal server error: no screens found Gotta go, x session getting corrupt,,,

Jul 3, 2010I am a linux noob and have been searching for a couple months to a fix for my problem but now I just need I have two hard drives. One with vista and the other with ubuntu, storage space, and some other partition. I was dual booting windows and ubuntu jaunty jackalope then one day I decided it would be fun to upgrade to 10.04 so I did. When I tried loading windows from grub it just showed a blinking cursor forever. And while attempting to fix the problem by adding windows to the grub menu.lst file it dissapeared from the grub options.

Ubuntu :: Upgraded To 10.04.1 And Get Black Screen After Grub?
Oct 6, 2010Just upgraded to 10.04.1 today and after I turn on the computer it goes to a screen asking for my username and password. Have tried to input my details but with no success.
I also tried pressing 'ALT-F7', but still no look, just takes me to a black screen with nothing.

But here goes anyway:Perfectly working dual-boot system with XP and Ubuntu 8.04. I also think I had installed a different boot loader (or maybe just a GRUB editor?). This was several years ago. I upgraded Ubuntu to 10.04 and I remember it asking me if I wanted to overwrite probably menu.lst. I said no when I should have said yes and now XP still loads fine but neither version of Ubuntu will load at all. I wish I had access to the machine so I could say what the error message is, but I don't and I forget.So I expect that menu.lst is just pointing to the wrong place but I'm not sure how to fix it. Can I boot from a live CD and edit menu.lst? Just thought about that.No biggie but I cannot screw up the XP aspect since that's major drama.

This is from Fedora 12 x86_64 DVD. I presume that this obviously has to do with my disk selection during partitioning, during which I deselcted the two drives that I didn't want to be part of the install and left the one that I did selected. I also selected "use entire disk". The drive had copies of both Ubuntu and Windows 7 on it, which I expect were wiped out during install.
I know that the details are sparse...but that's all I did. I'm happy to go back into the installer to retreive any necessary information that may be needed/to reinstall.

Jul 30, 2010I was trying to remove a Kubuntu usplash image from my dads laptop with "StartUp manager" when I accidently clicked "Restore to default settings". Now I get a "Error 15 blabla" after selecting what to boot from GRUB.
/boot is on a separated partition. "find /grub/stage1" return hd(0,4) so i ran "root (hd0,4)" and "setup (hd0)". The thing is that GRUB is set up fine and it works as it should (the list of OS'es shows up etc..), but when i choose something to boot it gives me the error 15.

Nov 2, 2010I tried installing 9.04 on an older computer and was getting the Error 18 from Grub 2.5, likely because BIOS couldn't access the kernel. So I decided to remove Ubuntu and Grub completely and I'm now back at square one. However, I still very much want to dual-boot with Ubuntu. I was thinking I'd try again with 10.10 because it uses Grub 2 which I hear would probably take care of the problem. is this correct? Am I likely to have better results with Grub 2, or will I probably run into the same problem?

I tried a fresh install over f14 with this drive (sdb, sda is my backup disk)

Typing 'ls' in the rescue grub prompt returns

Cant 'ls /' into a single them - unknown filesystem (grub is installed in mbr of sdb) 'linux rescue' (wanted to try manual grub installation) command didnt work either.
Now again on fedora 14, same installation procedure, works fine. (and i wont bother doing a full distro upgrade from f14)

Feb 13, 2010I used proprietary software (acronis trueimage) to clone an Opensuse 11.1 machine, onto another machine with somewhat distinct hardware (different motherboard, less memory). I expected to have to change entries in /boot/grub/menu.lst, /etc/fstab, etc. I was told a good way to do this was to use the Opensuse DVD's "repair installed system" feature.
When I ran the repair, I was informed that "bootloader configuration file contains errors". I attempted to re-install the bootloader, but received this unhelpful error: "An error occurred during boot loader installation. Retry boot loader configuration?". When I boot the system, I just see the text "GRUB ", followed by a flashing underscore character.
Ubuntu Installation :: GRUB Won't Load - Error 15 & 17
Jan 10, 2010So after having performance issues with Karmic in ext4 I decided to install Hardy with ext3. Was blazing fast, epic, I loved it. But I wanted firefox 3.5 & all the other cool stuff Karmic has.. so I decide to install Karmic, but this time with ext3 instead of 4.
First installation: After the installation went fine, no errors while installing or anything. I remove the CD and reboot. "GRUB Loading, please wait.. Error 15" I did my googling, with the live CD to try and figure out a way of fixing this error. No luck. I did find out that the error is caused by the GRUB trying to load form the wrong drive. So I try to boot directly from the Karmic drive, Error 15. Try to boot directly from the Windows drive, Error 17.
This is the first time this has ever happened to me. First time installing Hardy, everything went great. Installing Jaunty, everything went great. Installing Karmic (for the first time) everything went great. Uninstalled Karmic and installed Hardy, everything went great. Uninstalled Hardy to install Karmic = FAIL!. I did a clean install every single time. The OS is being installed (clean) in the same drive.
A 40GB drive for Windows. A 200GB drive for Ubuntu +/home +swap, and a 120GB(FAT32) for storage.
I installed Karmic 3 times, yes.. 3 times. The last time I installed I removed both the 40GB & the 120GB drives. Leaving only the one I was going to use for Ubuntu, the 200GB drive. After the installation I rebooted and Karmic loaded without problems. I'm in Karmic right now and it isn't all sluggish like it was with ext4, guess my old drives aren't good with ext4 *sight*.
But I can't use my Windows drive. When trying to boot directly from it, it gives me "GRUB Error 17" - I have to disconnect the Ubuntu drive to boot into Windows. Quick question: What the **** is going on?
Someone help, please.. I'm tired of this ****.. and if I have to install Karmic one more time, I won't. I'll just give up and disconnect my Ubuntu drive, put it away and let it accumulate dust somewhere, seriously.. Someone help me correct this without having to install the OS again.
The GRUB error is while the GRUB is loading. It doesn't give me the option to select a OS.

I have two hard discs (160GB SATA and 80GB PATA).I have just installed Windows XP Professional and then reinstalled grub2 from a live CD. Both OS are on 80GB PATA drive.The Grub menu at boot time has "Windows XP Professional" entry in it.
