Fedora Installation :: 15 Installation Fails With Grub Error - File Not Found

May 24, 2011

Ive installed about 50+ boxes with ubuntu/mint/fedora/etc but f15 is giving me a real headache...

I tried a fresh install over f14 with this drive (sdb, sda is my backup disk)

Installed obviously in part7

After rebooting (successful copied live image on hdd)

Code:

After another couple of installs (with lvm & w/o lvm) & even disconnecting the second harddrive -> same issue

Typing 'ls' in the rescue grub prompt returns

Code:

Cant 'ls /' into a single them - unknown filesystem (grub is installed in mbr of sdb) 'linux rescue' (wanted to try manual grub installation) command didnt work either.

Now again on fedora 14, same installation procedure, works fine. (and i wont bother doing a full distro upgrade from f14)

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Following Error 15: File Not Found?

May 21, 2010

My problem now is: After booting my laptop, Ubuntu doesn't load and i'm stuck in a GRUB command prompt and not sure what to do. If i type "boot" I get "error: no loaded kernel"Here is how I got there:1. I ran 9.1 healthily until I was prompted to do an upgrade. I ran the upgrade but some packages weren't authenticated so I ran a partial upgrade. 2. I reboot but I'm faced with "Error 15: File not found". After some research and going through the forums, I thought I found the solution by following these instructions to copy the GRUB files from the Live CD (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Gr...0from%20LiveCD)3. Once I completed this, I'm now stuck at a grub> prompt when rebooting (the error 15 has disappeared). (the screen header informs me i'm dealing with "GNU GRUB version 1.98-1ubuntu5"Any thoughts on what I might have done wrong? From my reading today, I might have installed GRUB2 (even though Grub legacy would have been appropriate?). What is the best way out?

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Error 15: File Not Found

Nov 2, 2010

Have a Dell Inspiron 4100 laptop. 1GB RAM and 1 Ghz processor. Has a working install of Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.4 OEL uses Grub version 0.97 My OEL install works well and I do not want to make any changes to it such as upogarding GRUB to a later version etc.

I have installed Xubuntu mini and this completed without a problem.

I have a single hard drive.

I went into OEL and mounted the Xubuntu root drive so I could see the /boot/grub/menu.lst file.

I copied the entries for the main xbuntu kernel etc and pasted them into my OEL grub.conf.

title Ubuntu 10.10, kernel 2.6.35-22-generic
uuid d6ed555c-54a3-4639-af25-3582c60624ad
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.35-22-generic root=UUID=d6ed555c-54a3-4639-af25-3582c60624ad ro quiet splash

[Code]....

I am doing this so someone else can borrow this laptop for internet use for a few weeks and OEL is not very user friendly and also want to protect my install.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Error - File Not Found

Aug 11, 2011

I've had my Ubuntu crash and had to reload it. I;ve reloaded 9.1 and am now getting the error

GRUB loading.
error: file not found
grub rescue>

I have tried a number of solution attempts I've found on the internet with no success.

I have Windows 7 also loaded however I'm not getting a Grub menu only the error above. I seem to have a number of Linux partitions I believe my correct one is on sda7. I had at one stage tried to have a boot partition on sda4.

Debian Installation :: Fresh Install - Grub File Not Found Error

Nov 28, 2015

I just installed debian from debian-live-8.2.0-amd64-standard+nonfree.iso and after installation, which finished without problems, I cannot boot the system. I get the error:

Code: Select allfile '/boot/grub/i386-pc/normal.mod not found

From grub-rescue via ls command I see that I don't have the i386-pc folder inside /boot/grub. I have only two files:
unicode.pf2 and grub.cfg

Fedora Installation :: Error 15 / File Not Found At First Re-boot

Oct 27, 2009

I am getting a message at my first re-boot after install of "Error 15: File Not Found", and that's as far as it goes. I just installed Fedora 11 on a Drive that I had recently ran Ubuntu 9.04. I did re-partition and format the drive. I am also running Win XP Pro on another drive, and can boot from either. The computer is older, but all the hardware seemed to work fine with Ubuntu and altough I had to format the install drive a couple times the installation seemed to go ok.

Fedora Installation :: Upgrading F13 To F14 - Error 15: File Not Found

Jan 7, 2011

After preupgrading without problems, I did not reboot the computer inmediatly. I was surprised that, although preupgrade had finished, the terminal window was yet active and I closed it. On reboot, in the Grub window, one of the options is "Actualizar a (upgrade to) Fedora 14". If I select it I get: "Booting 'Actualizar a Fedora 14 (Laughlin)'

kernel /upgrade/vmlinuz preupgrade repo=hd::/var/cache/yum/preupgrade ks=hd:UUID=02f7302b-aa56-4c33-b533- fa1549aa0860:/upgrade/ks.cfg stage2=hd:UUID=02f7302b-aa56-4c33-b533-fa1549aa0860:/upgrade/install.img initrd /upgrade/initrd.img
Error 15: File not found
Press any key to continue....."

and pressing a key it returns to the Grub window. The /upgrade directory doesn't exist, but it does the /boot/upgrade where the vmlinuz is. uninstall and reinstall the preupgrade, rebooting inmediatly, but I don't know how to uninstall and if this is the solution. How can I uninstall the preupgrade?

Fedora Installation :: Got An Error Found Something That Said Add "vga=ask" To The Grub Loader, Which Still Loads Into Shell?

May 27, 2009

00:12.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GeForce 7150M (rev a2)Linux rpmL 2.6.27.24-170.2.68.fc10.86_64 #1 SMP Wed May 20 22:47:23 EDT 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linuxere my predicamenti got a HP pavilion laptop running that Nvidia graphics card, on that build. So it was a fresh FC10 install, but it would hang up, and only load if i hit the keypad/mouse, which it still does. Eventually it gets to the shell login screen. root login and i then did a yum update, which got me to the current build. that didnt work. NO x window still.

tried startx again, got me an error. found something that said add "vga=ask" to the grub loader, which still loads into shell, but when i do startx, it made me a xorg.conf.new, which i copied into /etc/X11 rebooted and tried again. still have to move the mouse or keypad for the load to start (no idea y) but it loads to shell, and startx works.

Ubuntu Installation :: Error 'grub-xputs' Not Found

Dec 17, 2010

I did the Synaptic Upgrade to Maverick Meerkat 10.10 on my laptop. Win 7 on one of two separate hard drives, and Ubuntu on the other. I kept all the previous configurations the same when the software asked the question about changing to the new formats. On boot up the laptop went right into "grub rescue >".

I located the partitions and found the Ubuntu partition on (hd1,1).

I set the prefix and root which now show:

prefix=(hd1,1)/boot/grub
root=hd1,1

I am not sure what Modules to Load, because I can not find any references to them in my big Ubuntu Book.

I tried "insmod /boot/grub/linux.mod", but it returns "error 'grub-xputs' not found".

When using the "initrd" command, it responds "unknown command". Trying to exit Grub 2 with "normal" also yields an "unknown command".The command "exit", "help", and "linux" returns an "unknown command".

The hold up seems to be that pesky 'grub-xputs'. I can not find out what it is.

Is there a list somewhere of Grub 2 Commands?

I had a similar problem upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04 last April. I was able to reload grub and get the laptop operating normally. This time I am unable to get the laptop out of grub rescue.

Ubuntu Installation :: File Not Found - Grub Rescue ?

Nov 30, 2010

I am reading spc456's thread with the same subject line and trying to work through the thread with suggestions by drs305.

My situation is very similar. It started with a sudden Windows boot problem (still my primary OS):

Quote:

This was only if I selected Windows from the boot menu. I thought I could cure it with the Windows-7 Repair Disk from neosmart.net. This appears to have wiped my Boot partition completely and now I can't boot anything. (I'm using the Ubuntu 10.10 live as I type this.)

I downloaded boot_info_script055.sh and here are the RESULTS but I don't know what needle to look for in that haystack.

Code:

Boot Info Summary:

Well, I see why the Windows boot didn't show up. Looks like 30-OS_prober was failing to find the Windows boot record, which makes sense if the whole blessed (ahem) boot partition has been hosed.

I tried to follow the grub-install instructions:

Code:

But since grub2 is obviously not going to find the Windows boot record, I will continue with drs305's.

Code:

No, I have not mounted /dev. Where would I do that? Against which FS?

In any case, I am now printing the article "How to restore the Ubuntu/XP/Vista/7 bootloader" to see if I can get that going.

To my dismay, I discovered that the disk supplied with my Dell machine is NOT a Windows Installation disk, so no straightforward "fixmbr" command will be possible at this time.

I'll let y'all know how I have fared with this. I am sceptical because it's not merely the master boot record that has gotten corrupted but the whole blessed (have I used that adjective already?) boot partition.

Ubuntu Installation :: Add Windows 7 To GRUB - Got BOOTMGR Not Found Error

Jan 7, 2010

I just got a new computer that has Windows 7 Ultimate, and I want to install Ubuntu to a partition that I created. I want to be able to re-add my Windows 7 to the GRUB, without erasing either of my operating systems. I have seen people that changed the menu.lst file, but got the BOOTMGR not found error. Will I get this problem? My computer came with one drive split in two partitions, WIN7 and DATA. I took 150GB out of the DATA partition to make a new one called Linux. So, how would I put Windows 7 in GRUB, but not erase eithr operating system, and will I get the BOOTMGR not found error?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04.1 Install Fails To Boot -> Error: Out Of Disk, Grub Rescue

Jul 13, 2011

Downloaded Ubuntu 10.04.1 Desktop AMD64, tried to install it to a cleand HDD using the whole HDD, i.e. gave it permission to use the whole HDD. Installation process appeared to run OK but when it came to the restart it just fired up the message

error: out of disk
grub rescue>

I've searched this forum and found numerous references to these error messages but cannot make head nor tail of the diagnostic suggestions. Apart from anything else they suggest strings of command lines which I don't understand and can't enter anyway since they don't correspond to my keyboard layout (if I hit > or ) something completely different appears on the screen). Is there someone here who can provide a step-by-step solution in lay language ? Or is there such a thing as a bootable file which can be downloaded and inserted into my CD drive to correct this problem ?

Ubuntu Installation :: Error 15: File Not Found

Oct 24, 2010

Iv been using ubuntu on my laptop for just over a year now and thought it about time my desktop got the same. I cant get rid of the vista section of the disk because of things i have on there so a friend gave me a spare 80gb hard drive to have a play with it and go from there. So first of all installed unbuntu 10.10 on the hard drive alls fine i can boot into both vista and ubuntu, i then want to install backtrack 4, so i booted the backtrack disc and off we went, i split the 80gb hard drive in two and installed backtrack to one section, now i cant boot to anything other than backtrack. I got an option for ubuntu although this does look different now (showing up as 'ubuntu, with linux 2.6.35-22-generic-pae') when i go to this option i get the message "error 15:file not found" I also have the option for other operating system, i get this message when i choose this option "error 11: Unrecognized device string"

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 - Error B43 / Firmware File Not Found

Apr 7, 2011

I'd like to install Ubuntu 10.10 in my laptop. So, I downloaded the iso file and burned into CD. I'd like to install into D drive since I use Windows Vista in C drive.

Below is the specification of my laptop.
Mobile AMD processor 2 G HZ, 1G RAM 32-bit Windows Vista Home basic
Harddisk C : 46 G (18giga free), D : 10 G (10giga free) How can I make partition and where should I start with, either Beginning or End of existing partition? SWAP? I watched a few videos but stlll can't grasp clearly how to do. I tried to boot w/ Live CD. But I didn't see the 4 different options: Try out without installing, Memory test, Ubuntu Disk test, Install Ubuntu, and Booting w/ harddisk. I had only 2 options; Try out w/o installing, Installing. Why is it so?

In addition, while booting w/ Live CD, I saw a message as following:
Error: b43.../firmware file not found.. something like this.. it was too fast to catch! However, I went on and show its desktop screen. May I not be able to install in my laptop? Does my laptop have any faulty disk or memory? I wonder. Finally, I use Wireless connection in the library so when I boot with Live CD, then internet is disconnected. Should I need to be connected before installing?

General :: Broken Dual Boot - Xp / Ub - Error: Error File Not Found - Grub Rescue

May 21, 2011

Ubuntu 9.10 was set up to handle the booting selection - previously I thought it was xp but Ubuntu 9.10 "did" it. The system started out as a xp / ubuntu 9.10 dual boot on a 400gb drive. xp has 210gb, ub has 80 and their is a 100gb shared storage. Xp was installed first and then I followed a guide over at linuxconfig.org to get ub installed so that I could select which OS was wanted at boot. Ubuntu manages the boot up menu (Went back to look at my notes from the original setup) The owner tried to update to ub 11.04 and afterall was said and done the machine now boots to the message

error file not found grub rescue I can't say if 11.04 was properly installed or not. Ask whatever you like and I'll give the best answer I can. I think the xp install is okay but I can't say for certain as I don't know how to boot it outside the bootmanager at startup. Data has been saved so if I have to blow it all away and start over I can but I'm hoping I won't have to.

Fedora Installation :: 13 Installation DVD - Some Random .rpm File Could Not Be Found

Aug 23, 2010

I have attempted to download and burn the fedora 13 i386 installation DVD twice, however, both DVDs that I burned failed during installation. I verified the .iso before burn and the dvd before installation and in both cases they were fine. But during installation, I received error messages that some random .rpm file could not be found (for each attempt it was different). All other configuration went fine, this only happened after the final package selection and when the actual installation starts.

EDIT: I am burning the DVD on my mac book pro using disk utility but performing the installation on a Toshiba Satellite.

Ubuntu Installation :: Installed OpenSUSE 11.3 And Can't Boot - Error 15: File Not Found

Nov 16, 2010

Decided I'd like to take a look at OpenSUSE and installed onto my desktop. Already successfully dual booting Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows XP (which I keep purely for iTunes). When I start the PC the Ubuntu grub menu showing Ubuntu and Windows options has been replaced by a Suse-branded screen showing something that looks (to my untrained eye) like a grub menu. Ubuntu and Suse are listed. If I select Ubuntu I am shown a dos screen with "Error 15: file not found". I am then taken to the old Ubuntu grub screen but trying to boot Ubuntu from that menu returns the same error. I know all the data is still there - I can mount the drive in Suse and view all my documents.

I have searched the forums and tried to follow some of the instructions given in response to similar threads but I'm afraid I didn't get very far. Please assume that I have NO PRIOR KNOWLEDGE of Linux! I really know nothing about it and am only just getting to grips with basic terminal commands. Goodness knows why I thought OpenSUSE would be a good idea... I found instructions for running Boot Info Script and these are the results:
