I have been getting video error's in gnome-panel since I upgraded to Natty. It seems to become transparent on part of it, and my background covers it. I have tried deleting my gnome-panel preference's, to no aval. Does anybody know how to fix this?
View 9 RepliesIn Maverick I could remove the last Gnome panel by editing gconf and removing gnome-panel from desktop > gnome > session > required_components.I've just updated to Natty and doing this makes no difference. I assume Unity is doing it now, or maybe zeitgeist?I've grep'd through .local and .config, and checked Startup Applications but it still loads gnome-panel every session.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI must say, the RPMfusion version of the Nvdia driver package work better with FC10 than they did under FC9 for me, which is to say: they work at all. Still get corrupted output after a few hours of work, but I imagine that's just the underlying weakness of the Nvidia driver bubbling up. Either way, now I have other problems:
First off, the Intel driver for my onboard video setup has stopped working entirely. The attempt to bring up X on the Intel setup gets me to the KDE login screen and locks the machine up hard (poweroff required). A look at the xorg.0.log shows that the server seems to be stuck in a loop trying to determine the valid video properties for the session.
Here's my xorg.conf, BTW. I have it setup to perform different configurations depending on which DefaultServerLayout line gets uncommented (lines 4 - 6). If anybody has a better way of doing this, I'm all ears. While we're on my xorg.conf, pleas view lines 64-67 and/or 75-77. This is my quickie way of changing drivers (again, all ears) which brings us to the next problem, neither the nv or nouveau drivers work with my system. Interestingly enough, both drivers tend to fail in the same relative spot in the process, I think. Please refer to line 207 of this xorg.0.log with the nv driver or line 140 of this xorg.0.log from the nouveau setup. Either way, both sessions die with the same message: (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration. Fatal server error: no screens found Gotta go, x session getting corrupt,,,
I have an error icon in my Gnome panel that will not go away. It appeared after running an apt-get command (explained below). Everything is working fine, but I cannot get the error icon to go away. Surely there must be some file somewhere storing the state that is making this reappear. The icon occurred after the following: I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04. Yesterday, I decided to add the Medibuntu repository to my apt sources based on the instructions at [URL] -- i.e., I ran the command:
sudo wget --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list [URL] && sudo apt-get --quiet update && sudo apt-get --yes --quiet --allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get --quiet update
In the terminal window, I saw the following error message amidst the other output:
W: GPG error: [URL] lucid Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 2EBC26B60C5A2783
However, everything appears to have worked fine. The Medibuntu repository has been added to my sources, the keyring has been added, and I am able to install packages from the repository using apt-get without any errors.
Nonetheless, an error icon appeared in the Gnome panel after running the above command-line, and it will not go away. If I move the mouse pointer over it, the following text displays:
An error occurred, please run Package Manager from the right-click menu or apt-get in a terminal to see what is wrong. The error message was: 'Unknown Error: '<type 'exceptions.SystemError'>' (E:Opening configuration file /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/99synaptic - ifstream::ifstream (13:Permission denied))' This usually mean that your installed packages have unmet dependencies
The file /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/99synaptic it mentions is present and is readable (at least as root). Running Package Manager works fine with no errors. I've tried running
sudo apt-get check
and it runs fine without any errors. Likewise,
sudo apt-get update
and
sudo apt-get upgrade
run fine with no errors. But the error icon remains.
If I log out of Gnome and log back in, the error icon returns. If I reboot, the error icon returns as soon as I log back into a Gnome session. How to I get rid of this?
I've been running Ubuntu on my laptop for a while, and I recently upgraded from 10.04 in Ubuntu using System -> Admin -> Update manager. However, when I now run System -> About Ubuntu, I'm told I'm running Natty Narwhal 11.04, rather than Ubuntu 10.10 which I was aiming for. I never noticed this earlier, though... I guess it's a month or two since I upgraded.Did something go wrong in the update and cause this to happen by mistake?I there a way for me to downgrade to 10.10?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI upgraded from Maverick to the Natty beta a little while ago. It all worked fine for a couple of weeks. Then, this morning, I was unable to boot. I got to GRUB, picked the first option and it went to the Ubuntu 11.04 with the dots, then returned this:

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have just upgraded to Natty but since doing so the Wicd icon is missing. Everything is working ok, connection is as it should be but I would prefer to have the icon showing that I am connected to my network.
I have spent hours looking for a solution and tried several different remedies, none of which work.
I need the steps to troubleshoot this:
If I:
1. Add drawer(s) on the gnome panel
2. add items to one or more of those drawers
3. reboot then:
1. all empty drawers can operate normally
2. drawers that have stuff in it cannot be opened.
I upgraded my dedicated server using the do-release-upgrade command, and it seems to have installed many extra packages I do not require. This is a headless server in a datacentre, yet the upgrade caused me to install GUI packages I do not need. Is there a way to quickly remove all but the default server packages?

After a fresh install of Fedora 12 I'm delivered to the image on the attachment. Well aside from not being able to see icons on the left, or go to the any terminal and not seeing anything and be forced to blind type and hope for the best there are some other issues. Enabling panel transparency shows video artefacts on the panel.nouveau doesn't enable 3D(I use a NVidia GeForce 9600 GT 512MB and my monitor is a ACER LCD X223W)) kind and point me to resources about the nouveau driver and how to configure it so it starts to work?
View 7 Replies View RelatedRegarding the gnome-panel in Ubuntu (64 bit).... I discovered some time ago that I wasn't the only one who routinely (every login) had their gnome-panel appear butchered, for which Alt-F2 then 'killall gnome-panel' would easily fix.
Having become impatient with this over the past 8 months, I decided I would automate the process and so cofiguring the startup applications seemed like a perfectly logical choice to me. Turns out I was wrong. After adding 'killall gnome-panel' to the startup applications not only does the panel fail to load altogether now, but Alt-F2 doesn't even work.
I tried Ctl-Alt-F1 and working with the graphics-free mode thinking I could somehow navigate to the startup apps config file and edit it, but I don't know where it is or how to edit it without logging in as root and I certainly don't know of any 'root password'.
How I can set that my left panel fit the top edge of the screen (instead of top panel)?
View 6 Replies View RelatedSo I just updated my IdeaPad to Natty and played around with Unity. The performane was absolutely unbearable so I installed Unity2D from the software center. Now when I start the session everything seems to be fine at first. Whenever I move the mouse over the panel though it seems to switch to my old gnome-panel from the "Classic" session (with some missing icons). When I move the mouse over that panel again it switches back to the Unity panel style. What is going on? Can I fix this somehow? I will have to use the classic session until I get a working consistent behavior

Pidgin is better by far, why ubuntu want me to use empathy? Anyway, how should I reinstall this applet? I google it, but I cant find out the way to install the session indicator applet. gconf-editor -> desktop -> gnome -> session -> remove "gnome-panel" value.
This does not remove the top panel anymore. Relog and restart has been tried. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to remove it? I'm using AWN, so the top panel isn't useful for me
Solved: So I just randomly thought of changing my login session to user defined, and voila! Panel gone Guessing logging into classic just won't let you log on without it.
I am running natty (64bin) and recently it has stopped responding to either the shutdown or reboot command from the panel menu. When you select shutdown, and then hit yest to confirm, nothing happens. I looked at the logs and nothing seems to be generating any errors either. Not even sure how to trouble shoot this issue.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI hopelessly tried to find answers for my problems but I could not find a single person complaining about this one: I am using a Lenovo G550 laptop (which has an NVIDIA graphics card) accompanied by a samsung screen using TwinView configuration. I have some special effects enabled and they all seem to work fine.
My main problem is: When I double click on the top panel in a window and maximize its size (it can be an application, a directory window or a terminal, anything..) on Natty, I sometimes can reduce its size back by double clicking on the Natty panel and sometimes this does not work! In times this does not work (reducing by double clicking again), I have to use the rectangle button in the panel in order to reduce it back. In times it works, I can simply double click on Natty top panel or left click on the panel, hold it, and pull it down.
What the hell can be the reason? I somehow observed a strange relationship between this behaviour and thunderbird but I am not 100% sure. Can anyone offer some help?
And another irrelevant question:
Is there a way to make the mail/pidgin indicator that turns green when a new message/mail recieved jump or move or do some action? Because when working full screen it is really hard to notice that thing going green. Previously on 10.10 if i'm not mistaken you could make the pidgin indicator jump high and low as a notifier. Is there a way in 11.04 to achieve this?
Does any one know how to get the name back on the gnome panel. It seems to have disappeared , I tried using the add to panel feature by right clicking on the panel but cannot locate it in the list.

Now when I open Banshee there is no icon in the panel. I checked the preferences menu to see if I could change this setting, but didn't see anything there.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've installed Ubuntu 10.4 and the gnome-panel appears half, as you can see in the attached picture, if I try resolutions over 1024x768.If I kill the gnome-panel and it restarts, or if I change its properties, it became OK, but in startup it appears like the image.I've tried other Gnome 2.3 based distributions and occurs the same issue. With Gnome 2.28 it doesn't occurs. Then ii seems a gnome 2.3 problem.
PD: My grafic card is a Matrox G550.
i just upgraded to ubuntu 10.04 from 9.10. videos wont play in firefox anymore. ..... videos require 100% computing power and play at 1 frame every 5 seconds with choppy audio.

symptom: via right click on a gnome panel, perform "add to panel" and choose Dwell Click.
Gnome panel bites the dust with SIGSEGV at this point, restarts, and then you've got dwell click on the panel.
Anyone else seeing this, and better yet, have a solution?
I recently installed ubuntu 9.10 dual boot. All went well until I upgraded the video drivers for the nvidia chipset on my motherboard. If I leave Gnome to start with the single user i created i get a black screen and 'mode not supported ' message on the monitor. BUT if i drop to root and 'startx' all is well and i can adjust the various screen resolutions and they all work well.
At this point i created another user name to check, and that works fine also, but if i drop back to the original user i get no screen unless i select 800x600, although all the other resolutions work fine with root and the other user name. Im stumped as I presume there's only one xorg.conf file for all users.
How do I delete Gnome-panel only without deleting gnome?

I suppose my question would be, where is the "panel-shadow.png" file located that I can edit and make transparent? I found it before but cannot for the life of me now.
