Apr 29, 2011The upgrade finished, did a y to reboot and it boots to memtest, no sign of the grub screen at all.

Ubuntu :: Upgraded From 10.10 To 11.04 - Boots To Memtest ESC Not Working?
Jun 29, 2011I have a machine that was running 10.10 and I updated it to 11.04 and now when I reboot I am taken directly into memtest. Any attempt to hit esc during boot is ignored and no matter what I just go into memtest. Here is /etc/default/grub from my boot drive

I am booting now from a 10.10 USB stick and I can access my boot drive so if I need to change stuff I can.

Feb 6, 2010I'm stuck in Memtest86, everytime i boot it gives me an option to go into BIOS, and then it says "Loading GRUB." After that it automaticly goes into memtest, and I've let it finish numerous times without giving me errors. I've installed Linux Mint 8 via Unetbootin, I have a nearly fresh install of windows 7 on my laptop.

Jul 31, 2011I ran grub-customiser to set default kernel, and saw the GFX mode setting, thinking "Hey, my monitor is native at 1440x900! I'll use that!" ...Didn't think about how the GFX card isn't initialized at that point, so my res is limited to 640x480... So the first problem was a system hang at the grub menu, with "Input Not Supported" displayed on the monitor.I changed the GFX mode back, and ran update-grub, and with a grin on my face, I rebooted. The grin went away fast, when I saw that none of the kernels showed in the grub menu, and I have only the two memtest entries. It appears that, while all the files are still intact, grub is not seeing the kernels. I had an idle partition of about 13 GB on hand, so after trying all sorts of things, I did a clean install on the little 13 GB partition. Still no dice, after doing an apt-get purge grub etc etc etc on my main Ubuntu partition, to make sure that the new grub was running. I still have only memtest, even though I can open the /boot directory and see the kernel files. I tried going into the grub command line and starting manually, but tab-complete does not suggest any of the kernel files, and tells me that the files do not exist, if I type in their full names.

This causes Grub to start-up a different line than I have set to default. (Ubuntu vs. Windows, etc.)
1. How do I edit the start-up Grub to remove the "memtest" lines?
2. How do I prevent this from occurring?

Jun 8, 2010Had v9.x installed alongside Windows XP SP3 install. Have not used it that much since install.
Got the bug to upgrade to v10.
Went through the upgrade process, everything seemed fine.
At the end of the install process asked which dev to install GRUB onto - I selected only one drive, the wrong one of course, and the reboot failed.

Have LiveCD running now to post. Ran Info_boot Script.sh - results below.
Will reinstalling v10 from Live CD fix this? Will this use Wubi or just go through normal install process? Or is there an easier fix to install GRUB on the correct drive to get the dual boot choice of Windows XP and Ubuntu back.
Naturally I need to get back to Windows ASAP - it's the net gateway and print server for my home/office setup.

Jan 10, 2011I upgraded my dell inspiron 6000 from ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 then rebooted and now I am stuck at the grub prompt. I am able to boot from a flash drive and have run the boot script. This laptop did not have a dual boot system on it but it did have windows on it at one time, converted to ubuntu.

Jul 10, 2010I installed 10.04 clean on the PC.Not other operating system.It booted to Ubuntu fine after the install and all appeared to be working fine.Used the upgrade manager to install the upgrades to the basic system.I had not yet loaded in any non-ubuntu or medibuntu repositories so this was the first, basic upgrade.After the upgrade,I can no longer boot to Ubuntu but boot to a grub prompt instead.I presume this is a recover prompt. How do I "recover" and continue booting to Ubuntu?

May 22, 2011My setup: a work laptop that has a corporate Win7 image, and to which I have added a few partitions to try various linux distributions. The MBR is governed by Lilo from the Slackware 13.37 installation in /dev/sda5. The MBR boots no kernel image directly, it only chainloads the boot sectors of partitions /dev/sda1, /dev/sda5, /dev/sda6 and /dev/sda7. The latter three are formatted ext4.The Win7 boot mechanism traditionally resides in /dev/sda1, and the linux distros are required to install their boot machines into their respective partitions.
What I am trying to say is, I installed Ubuntu 11.04 into /dev/sda7, and told the grub installer the same thing: install yourself into the boot sector of /dev/sda7. Kudos btw for the Ubuntu installer, it comes across as a very professional piece of software.

Dec 23, 2010I've been running Ubuntu on my laptop for a while, and I recently upgraded from 10.04 in Ubuntu using System -> Admin -> Update manager. However, when I now run System -> About Ubuntu, I'm told I'm running Natty Narwhal 11.04, rather than Ubuntu 10.10 which I was aiming for. I never noticed this earlier, though... I guess it's a month or two since I upgraded.Did something go wrong in the update and cause this to happen by mistake?I there a way for me to downgrade to 10.10?

Ubuntu :: Mouse Not Found When Natty Boots Up?
May 28, 2011When I boot up, Natty does not find my mouse. Ever. I have to unplug the mouse from the USB port and plug it back in and then everything works properly. I've never had this problem with previous releases. It happens if I boot into Gnome or into Unity.

May 2, 2015I wanted to install Debian 8.0 on my second hdd in my UEFI machine, but when I choose UEFI boot from USB, GRUB command line appears, and I cannot boot up the setup. I used Rufus to create the bootable USB stick, using the amd64 kde CD image. I tried several images and I deleted the Linux and Efi partitions from previous installation of Ubuntu . Also I deleted GRUB from the Windows 7 Efi partition.
In the UEFI setup fast boot and secure boot are disabled, and I don't seem to have the option to boot in legacy mode, if I choose the simple USB boot option (without "UEFI" in front) I get "please insert correct boot media, and press any key or reboot". I couldn't manually boot from GRUB command line, because it is showing that all the drives are empty, and if I type "boot" I get "please load the kernel first".

May 19, 2011I have just upgraded to Natty but since doing so the Wicd icon is missing. Everything is working ok, connection is as it should be but I would prefer to have the icon showing that I am connected to my network.

May 4, 2011I upgraded to Natty yesterday and my system boots into it ok but I don't get a grub menu (and so no other options like recovery mode which I really need right now). I tried purging grub and re-installing it on /dev/sda but still no joy. Here's the info from the Boot Info Script. I've also tried uncommenting GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480 in /etc/default/grub but that doesn't help. How I can get the menu back?

Ubuntu Installation :: Natty Upgrade - LVM Grub (No Such Disk)
May 5, 2011I've had this problem on a couple of Ubuntu server upgrades and am keen to get to the bottom of it. Basically, with an Ubuntu 10.10 server installtion where LVM has been used, running through the do-release-upgrade process works perfectly until the reboot stage. Then grub complains with "no such disk" and dumps me out to the grub shell. From here, I can see (from ls) the following:

I can enumerate the filesystem on (hd0,1) which seems to contain the /boot filesystem and the filesystem on (hostname-root) seems to contain the / filesystem.
If I execute:

initrd=(hd0,1)/initrd.img-2.6.38-8-server
boot
It boots, but into busybox saying that the target filesystem doesn't have requested /sbin/init.
