Ubuntu Installation :: "Upgraded" To Windows 7 And Now Can't See GRUB And Lucid / Fix It?

May 16, 2010

I'm at my wit's end with Windows this morning. I upgraded to Lucid a few days ago. Everything went very smoothly. Then I spent the greater part of Friday and Saturday "upgrading" to Windows 7 from Vista. I chose the "update" option which was only supposed to update to 7 rather than overwrite the entire HD. Now, GRUB doesn't load and I don't see my Linux partition. HOWEVER, it appears as though the partitions are still there! When I look in Winbloze at the HDs, it shows the Windoze HD as the partition size I made it when installing Ubuntu.

Any ideas on how to recover the awesomeness that is Ubuntu from this situation? Or do I need to install it fresh?

Machine specifics: Win Vista with Ubuntu 10.04 installed via Wubi. Upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 - killed Grub. Following other posts, I booted off a 10.04 Live CD and ran boot_info_script. The results are below. It's telling me core.img cannot be found - can someone please tell me what to do next (before I blunder on and make things worse!)

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgraded-Missing Grub-not Booting

Jun 8, 2010

Had v9.x installed alongside Windows XP SP3 install. Have not used it that much since install.
Got the bug to upgrade to v10.

Went through the upgrade process, everything seemed fine.

At the end of the install process asked which dev to install GRUB onto - I selected only one drive, the wrong one of course, and the reboot failed.

Boots up with:

Have LiveCD running now to post. Ran Info_boot Script.sh - results below.

Will reinstalling v10 from Live CD fix this? Will this use Wubi or just go through normal install process? Or is there an easier fix to install GRUB on the correct drive to get the dual boot choice of Windows XP and Ubuntu back.

Naturally I need to get back to Windows ASAP - it's the net gateway and print server for my home/office setup.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgraded To 10.4, Windows Xp Doesn't Load?

May 7, 2010

As many people have posted before regarding this issue, i think it was me who messed things up as i believe i incorrectly put grub on the sda1 ? when they asked about grub config during installation i was a bit lost, and even though i went off the help it said if you were not sure choose all of them..

So i am wondering if there is an easy way to fix this. As i am running sata drives on my laptop, so my windows xp recovery option is out... and all i have is a windows image, which i would like to try and repair from ubuntu as i can start ubuntu up.

Here is my boot setup:

Code:
Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010
============================= Boot Info Summary: ==============================
=> Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks on the same drive in partition #5 for /boot/grub.

Ubuntu Installation :: Windows 7 Overriden By Old Windows XP Entry - After Reinstall Grub

Oct 7, 2010

I am actually facing a vague problem here. I was previously running Windows XP and Ubuntu . Ubuntu was installed Windows XP The problem is

1. First I tried to do some disk partitioning. That ended up with some error.

2. Ignoring that, I went to install Windows 7 over Windows XP but I was not able to proceed with Windows 7 , because the partitions were corrupted.

3. So I used Ubuntu LIVE CD (Grub was lost at this point )and used 'testdisk' and recovered the partitions.

4. Now installed the Windows 7 successfully.

5. Now again I moved to Ubuntu Live CD to write the GRUB. After which I tried restarting

6. Now Ubuntu is booting perfectly as before. But the problem is with Windows

7. The GRUB loader instead of showing Windows 7, it shows Windows XP !!! . and there is no other entry for windows. When I tried opening it, it says "error, cant read file" and further inout moves back to the grub loader list again.

"How do I change the entry to Windows 7 from Windows XP and boot Windows7 successfully " I tried it a couple of times, same thing happens . So how to change the entry?

Ubuntu Installation :: Windows 7 Will Not Work While Grub/windows Installed?

Aug 5, 2011

Ive been running windows 7/Ubuntu dualboot for some years now and never had any problems. Some months ago I got a new Patriot Inferno ssd. Ofc the first thing I did was to installl windows 7, it had no problems, ran fast and smooth. Then when I reinstalled grub I started to get error when trying to start windows, the logo never apeared and all I got was the message "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software"Status: 0x00.00F" "Info: The boot selection failed because a required device was inaccessible.". It does not matter what order I install windows and ubuntu in, or how many times Ive tried to reinstall grub. Windows 7 will not work while I have grub/windows installed. Right now Ive got them installed on separate drives, ubuntu on the ssd and windows on a partition on a 1tb hdd. Unfortunately I need to have windows for .net programing and gaming..

General :: Dual-boot Upgraded From Ubuntu 8.04 To 10.04 Now GRUB Can't Find -- XP Good?

Mar 7, 2011

I apologize for this being somewhat vague but it happened several months ago and I don't currently have access to the laptop. But here goes anyway:Perfectly working dual-boot system with XP and Ubuntu 8.04. I also think I had installed a different boot loader (or maybe just a GRUB editor?). This was several years ago. I upgraded Ubuntu to 10.04 and I remember it asking me if I wanted to overwrite probably menu.lst. I said no when I should have said yes and now XP still loads fine but neither version of Ubuntu will load at all. I wish I had access to the machine so I could say what the error message is, but I don't and I forget. So I expect that menu.lst is just pointing to the wrong place but I'm not sure how to fix it. Can I boot from a live CD and edit menu.lst? Just thought about that.No biggie but I cannot screw up the XP aspect since that's major drama.

Ubuntu Installation :: Windows 7 Then 9.10 - No GRUB

Mar 8, 2010

I've been dual booting for years now between XP and Ubuntu Dapper -> My computer has a number of hard drives but on the main Hard Drive I have a Windows 7 partition and a Ubuntu Partition and a Swap partition.I've installed Karmic on it's partition twice now, I know the disc is fine because I have checked it for errors and installed it on other computers.

I have tried setting up the Boot Loader from Windows 7, but this yields a message "Cannot load from harddisk". GRUB doesn't install what so ever.Do I need to specify where GRUB gets installed as Windows 7 uses a different Boot Loader? Is this a Karmic / Windows 7 / Hardware bug?

Fedora Installation :: Reinstall Grub After A Windows Installation Deleted It?

This is partly a note to myself for the future and a guide to anyone who experiences similar issues.

So, I had to reinstall Windows XP since my previous installation gave me a blue screen error due to reasons unfathomable. Naturally, this deleted the GNU Grub and I could not login to my Fedora.

I read that apparently booting from a DVD installation offers an option to enter the rescue mode. I did not have a DVD, I only had the LiveCD so I had to figure out a way to reinstall Grub from the LiveCD. The following method seemed to do the trick.

Run the LiveCD and open Terminal.

1. Find the partition where the Grub Stage1 is code...
