Ubuntu Installation :: Fresh Install Boots But Screen Goes Black

May 11, 2010

I downloaded and burned Ubuntu from ubuntu.com (64bit version) while in windows 7 64 i popped the install disc in, and it went into a setup in which it installed it asked to reboot, and I allowed. upon reboot boot I could choose either Windows or Ubuntu, so I picked ubuntu and off it went. It started to boot into the (Ubuntu) OS, it shows the little ubuntu thing, then the display goes black, like there is no signal to the monitor. The PC still runs, and reconizes when I plug in an iPhone or something, there is just a black screen though. I would like to know how to go about fixing this?

Ubuntu Installation :: Black Screen On IMac G3 After Fresh Install Of Xubuntu 9.10?

Nov 28, 2010

I installed Xubuntu (Karmic 9.10) several times on an old iMac G3 with powerpc processor. Previously I had installed versions as 6.06 and 6.10 succesfully. But no luck this time. All installs were succesfull if alternate cd's were used.

The problem is that when i boot up i see the bootloader 'yaboot' and after that shortly the mouse logo from Xubuntu. After that the screen turns black and the indication light from the powerbutton turns from green to orange, this means no signal (i guess).

I assume that my screen resolution is wrong and cannot be displayed, the Mac uses 1024x768 if i am right.

My question is : How to access any configuration file to change resolution as I believe is the problem?

Edit: Perhaps there is a way to access command line to change config files.. ? Or using a live CD, but this computer is low on memory and has a hard time using live-CD's.

Fedora Installation :: Fresh Install Hangs On Boot / Black Screen Blinking Cursor

Aug 9, 2011

After installing Fedora 15 from LiveUSB and rebooting it just hangs on a black screen with a blinking cursor (underscore) in the top left of the screen. If it's reached grub, it isn't responding to any commands, and mashing several key combinations (such as ctrl-alt-f1) will produce a beep usually emitted only by the BIOS (hinting that it may never be making its way to grub).

The only particularly interesting thing about the install is that by default it wanted to boot itself from the MBR on my primary-master (Windows) disk. Instead I selected the option to boot from "the first partition in sdb1", which is my primary-slave (Linux) disk, (the first partition being /boot). This way I can change which OS boots by changing the boot order in my BIOS, and so avoiding bootloader wars.

Ubuntu Installation :: USB Installer Boots To Black Screen On HP

Jan 5, 2011

It's my first time trying to install Ubuntu. My problem is that booting from USB stick or trying to run "install to drive" both result in a black screen. Here are my specs:

HP EliteBook 8440p Intel Core i5 M520 @ 2.40 GHz NVIDIA NVS 3100M

Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit deployed to USB stick using Universal USB Installer 1.8.2.2.Searching around seems the problem is the way Nvidia graphics card is handled. I found a recommendation to set 'nosetmode' option, but found no easy way to do this on the current USB boot menu.Currently tried pressing TAB on the boot menu option and adding '--nosetmode' to command line, but result is the same.Does anyone have any suggestion about what I should try next?

Ubuntu Installation :: After Installation Automatically Boots Into A Black Screen With Blinking Cursor?

Jun 24, 2010

Problem-PC automatically boots into a black screen with blinking cursor. No message or nothing

I have 4 HD. Primary drive has Windows Vista, Secondary no OS installed. Sata1 HD Ubuntu 10.04, Sata2 Windows 7. Prior to installing windows 7 all was perfect but once I did it, grub got all screwed up. The only way I can boot into grub is if I manually select my Sata1 which has Ubuntu on it and only then it allows me to select Linux or Windows OS. How can I change that so it can boot up normally as before? I'm assuming that grub was installed in the primary drive which has vista on it, but once I installed windows 7 it got deleted and when I tried reinstalling Ubuntu, the grub was not installed in the primary drive.

Ubuntu Installation :: After Upgrades Netbook Boots To Black Screen - Gma500

Oct 2, 2010

Well, it's a long story, but to make it short I foolishly upgraded my wife's netbook many months ago to 10.04, not knowing that the new xserver version will cause me lots of grief with the gma500 driver. Back then, I ran an update that completely borked my system, and my only fix was to do another clean install. Since the, I just did not do any more upgrades.

So, months have gone by, and the netbook has not had any upgrades. I've read some instructions in the gma500 megathread on how to safely upgrade the system. To start, I had to purge the psb-kernel-source, do upgrades, and reinstall the psb-kernel-source and the other poulsbo drivers. I did all that, and now it boots to a black screen. I can't ctrl-alt-f1 to a terminal session either.

I really don't want to do another clean install. With the crappy broadcom driver as well, it's a real chore. And because of the crappy broadcom driver, I can't figure any way to get a wifi connection from the command line either.

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04 Fresh Install / Boots Into Grub CLI And Just Sits There

May 22, 2011

My setup: a work laptop that has a corporate Win7 image, and to which I have added a few partitions to try various linux distributions. The MBR is governed by Lilo from the Slackware 13.37 installation in /dev/sda5. The MBR boots no kernel image directly, it only chainloads the boot sectors of partitions /dev/sda1, /dev/sda5, /dev/sda6 and /dev/sda7. The latter three are formatted ext4.The Win7 boot mechanism traditionally resides in /dev/sda1, and the linux distros are required to install their boot machines into their respective partitions.

What I am trying to say is, I installed Ubuntu 11.04 into /dev/sda7, and told the grub installer the same thing: install yourself into the boot sector of /dev/sda7. Kudos btw for the Ubuntu installer, it comes across as a very professional piece of software.

Ubuntu Installation :: Fresh Installing 10.10 Hangs With Black Screen

Dec 19, 2010

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 from a Live CD. I can get to the Menu where I get to choose "Try without installing","Install Ubuntu","Test Disk," etc. After hitting ANY of the options, it hangs on a black screen, sometimes with a cursor blinking in the upper left, sometimes not. From all the research I've been able to dig up it seems it's a graphics card issue, but I haven't been able to find anything exactly like my problem as most everything I've been able to find say's theirs continues to install but then causes problems later, or they're trying to load on a dual boot system. I can't seem to get past that first "Install Ubuntu" selection. As soon as I hit enter it goes black.

I'm wondering if I can't load the nvidia drivers from a command line before I attempt to install from the live CD, but I don't know how to do that. I have the .run file downloaded but don't know where to go from there.

Ubuntu Installation :: Black Screen After Fresh Installation Of Kubuntu 10.04

May 1, 2010

After the upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 resulted in a black screen after reboot, I decided to don't waste more time, backed up my data and made a fresh installation.

First Issue [solved]: After I inserted the Kubuntu 10.04 Live-CD and started the system, I got to the CD's boot-mode selection menu. When I selected "Install Kubuntu", I got the Kubuntu bootscreen, but the system hang up then. I was able to solve this problem through pressing F6 in the boot-mode selection menu and setting "nomodeset". I also had to remove "quit splash" from the boot-entry line. Afterwards the installation process was fine.

Second Issue: I wanted to boot my new installated system, but, off course, got the blank screen again. So I edited the Grub-entry for recovery mode in the grubmenu (replaced "quit splash" with "nomodeset") and booted into recovery mode. I selected "netroot", and installed the proprietary nvidia-drivers with "apt-get install nvidia-current". Afterwards I ran "nvidia-xconfig" to generate the xorg.conf. To solve the blank screen issue, I edited the /boot/grub/grub.cfg the same way I described above and rebooted. Now I don't get a blank screen anymore, but I also don't get an XServer. The system boots now (off course without splash and "unquit"), but drops me into the tty1... When I type "sudo service kdm start", I get into KDM and can login, but I get many errors and crash-reports there. I also don't have any internet. I only have internet when booting in recovery mode and select "netroot".

I'm a bit surprised that Ubuntu released a LTS-Version that causes so much trouble (I've searched the forum and it seems that I'm not the only one with such big problems). Has Ubuntu droped support for NVidia-users?

Ubuntu :: 11.04 Boots To Black Screen

Jun 27, 2011

I just set up a ubuntu 11.04 Desktop 32-bit installation on an older pc that I found in the basement. It was running xp before and had 2 hard drives so I left the xp install alone and installed ubuntu on the second hard drive. It all booted up and worked fine until I rebooted it for the 2nd or 3rd time, now after I select ubuntu from grub it just loads to a black screen. Even in recovery mode if flashes the text across the screen and then also goes to a black screen. Now what seemed really wierd is that the same thing occurs if I try to boot from the usb drive i used to install it the first time, but win xp boots fine.

Some people have had this problem after a fresh install of Lucid, but its been working for a while so I don't get why it isn't working... I didn't do anything to the system except run some updates before I turned off the computer.

Ubuntu Installation :: Screen And Mouse Don't Line Up After Fresh Install From CD

Aug 1, 2010

I just did an install of 10.04 from a CD. Now the mouse pointer has to be slightly above a button to click on the button. Also, the bottom bar of the screen is just a thin line and you can't see any of the controls on it and the top bar is too thick, with empty space about the menu items. It is like the whole screen is pushed down slightly.

There is nothing wrong with the monitor or the mouse because it all worked fine with 7.10 ubuntu, which was on the computer before I did the fresh install from the CD.

Ubuntu Installation :: Blank Screen Fresh Install On Boot - Not I915

Jan 9, 2010

So I currently have an install of Karmic running that has been upgraded over the years but I am repartitioning my drives so I did a fresh install on a new drive.

My first problem was the live cd would not boot and I had to use the alternate cd to do the install. It would boot into a blank screen and the i915.modeset=0 kernel parameter did not help.

After the installation finished I went to try and boot and found that right when it went to initialize the graphics, my computer locked up hard. Keyboard unresponsive and all. I read the forums and I tried using the kernel parameter i915.modeset=0 and removed quiet and splash from the kernel line to see if I could spot any errors but nothing appeared.

I am able to boot into recovery mode, and I tried even running an apt-get upgrade to get all my packages up to date and installed the latest nvidia driver but still have this issue.

I'm at a loss as to what I should attempt next.

Here is boot info, just to clarify sda and sdb are a fakeraid on my old setup, sdc is my new install

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Boot After Fresh Install - Screen Blacks Out?

Mar 12, 2010

I was able to boot up the live CD and install the OS to the hard disk. *Single boot. After I rebooted, the system loads up to the Ubuntu splash screen and will "eventually" move along. The problem is that once it moves past the splash screen, it starts blacking out the screen. It looks like the screen turns on for about 10 seconds and then off for another 10 seconds repeatedly. The screen blinks like this indefinitely. This is my first attempt at installing and or using Linux so I am an uber n00b.

** Also, I am able to ctrl + alt + f1 and get to the terminal so i should be able to run any commands without any trouble.

Debian Installation :: After Fresh Install Login Ok But Blanck Screen After

Dec 31, 2010

I've installed a fresh Debian amd64 DVD version on my small HP Compaq 6537s / AMD Athlon X2 / 64. Everything went fine, I rebooted, the graphical login screen appeared, so I thought I will be able at last to run Debian on a computer ...

But then after login, the login Window disappeared, the "Debian" logo too, and... that's all folks! A nice blank screen. But the mouse is still perfectly drawn, so it's kind of weird.

Here's what tells me "uname -a" :

Linux olivierdebian 2.6.26-2-amd64 #1 SMP Sun Nov 21 09:17:22 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

If I go to CTRL-ALT-F1, i login as root and I do a "/etc/init.d/gdm restart", I have the login screen back and this is once again the same scenario: login => ok => blank screen with mouse properly drawn and the Debian background color still there.
