Ubuntu Installation :: Blank Screen Fresh Install On Boot - Not I915

Jan 9, 2010

So I currently have an install of Karmic running that has been upgraded over the years but I am repartitioning my drives so I did a fresh install on a new drive.

My first problem was the live cd would not boot and I had to use the alternate cd to do the install. It would boot into a blank screen and the i915.modeset=0 kernel parameter did not help.

After the installation finished I went to try and boot and found that right when it went to initialize the graphics, my computer locked up hard. Keyboard unresponsive and all. I read the forums and I tried using the kernel parameter i915.modeset=0 and removed quiet and splash from the kernel line to see if I could spot any errors but nothing appeared.

I am able to boot into recovery mode, and I tried even running an apt-get upgrade to get all my packages up to date and installed the latest nvidia driver but still have this issue.

I'm at a loss as to what I should attempt next.

Here is boot info, just to clarify sda and sdb are a fakeraid on my old setup, sdc is my new install

Slackware :: Framebuffer - I915 - And Current And Asus Eeepc - Halfway Through Boot Time The Screen Goes Blank

Mar 10, 2010

Got an Asus eeepc 900a. Runs Intel 915 graphics. Upgraded to slackware current last week. X would not start. Based on info here, I reverted back to earlier libdrm and xf86-video-intel. That got it working again.

Updated Slackware current again today. I think I got a new kernel. Now, halfway through boot time, the screen goes blank, then comes back and the font is tiny. Gone into framebuffer mode. If I start X, it just freezes. Nothing but a reboot will get out of it.

I have vga=normal in lilo.conf, but I read that this is no longer used. I can find no way to turn off framebuffer mode. From other threads here, I have tried append="i915.modeset=1" in lilo.conf. Has no effect.

I could revert Slackware to 13.0 from current, and that would make the eeepc useful again. Is there anything else I should try?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Fresh Install On Laptop - Blank Screen

May 1, 2010

My laptop: MSI AMD Athlon 64x2 Nvidia GeForce GO 6100.

I've done a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 and I end-up with a blank screen. I've also tried a fresh install of Xubuntu 10.04 and Kubuntu 10.04 and I get the same blank screen.

Ubuntu 9.10 was working perfectly though. So what do you think happened?

I installed the Ubuntu 10.04 livecd on my desktop and it works perfectly so I think it is not a burning problem.

Ubuntu Installation :: Fresh 10:04 Install - No Gnome Log In - Screen Goes Blank

Aug 1, 2010

I just setup a Fujitsu s6231 lifebook with Lucid. When I boot there is no grub menu unless i press the "start" key. Then the only way i can get into the machine is by entering into recovery mode and booting in "safe graphics mode".

Everything works fine once I am able to log on the "safe graphic mode".

If i don't press the "start" key the ubuntu logo will flash for 3 seconds and then the screen goes blank and nothing happens.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Boot After Fresh Install - Screen Blacks Out?

Mar 12, 2010

I was able to boot up the live CD and install the OS to the hard disk. *Single boot. After I rebooted, the system loads up to the Ubuntu splash screen and will "eventually" move along. The problem is that once it moves past the splash screen, it starts blacking out the screen. It looks like the screen turns on for about 10 seconds and then off for another 10 seconds repeatedly. The screen blinks like this indefinitely. This is my first attempt at installing and or using Linux so I am an uber n00b.

** Also, I am able to ctrl + alt + f1 and get to the terminal so i should be able to run any commands without any trouble.

CentOS 5 :: Blank Screen After Fresh Install / Why System Hanging Before GRUB Menu?

Mar 28, 2011

I installed CentOS 5.5 last night using the DVD ISO (from a USB drive thanks to the Universal USB Installer). I selected the Server and Virtualization packages, and finished the install all the way through. At the end, the installer asked me to remove any installation media and reboot the system. After rebooting, the system hangs on a blank screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner that does not accept text. This is before the GRUB screen appears. For partitioning, I created a 4GB swap partition on sdb and a 16GB ext3 partition on sda, mounted at /, with the remaining free space on sdb mounted at /storage.

Does anyone know why this system is hanging before the GRUB menu?

Fedora Installation :: Fresh Install Hangs On Boot / Black Screen Blinking Cursor

Aug 9, 2011

After installing Fedora 15 from LiveUSB and rebooting it just hangs on a black screen with a blinking cursor (underscore) in the top left of the screen. If it's reached grub, it isn't responding to any commands, and mashing several key combinations (such as ctrl-alt-f1) will produce a beep usually emitted only by the BIOS (hinting that it may never be making its way to grub).

The only particularly interesting thing about the install is that by default it wanted to boot itself from the MBR on my primary-master (Windows) disk. Instead I selected the option to boot from "the first partition in sdb1", which is my primary-slave (Linux) disk, (the first partition being /boot). This way I can change which OS boots by changing the boot order in my BIOS, and so avoiding bootloader wars.

Ubuntu :: LiveCD - Install And Boot - Blank Screen

May 4, 2010

I installed a new graphic card from ATI 5770 (Club3D). After I did it I removed the propriatery ATI drivers I had installed thru the "Hardware Drivers" in Ubuntu and rebooted. Then I couldn't get into ubuntu again. When it starts booting the display just shuts down and says "Power Saving mode". The computer continues to load things etc. left it running and hoped it would show itself... nothing.

Anyway this happens everytime even with Live CD so I can't even get to a terminal... Started the boot without the splash and it went blank after it started some Speech thing. Just before that there were a few firmware files missing.

I updated from Lucid to Maverick. When I boot with the new 2.6.35-22 kernel the screen stays blank after grub. When I boot the old 2.6.32-25 Kernel everything works fine. I tried to boot 2.6.35-22 in Recovery Mode. When I do this I see some kernel messages in text mode and then the screen goes blank again.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 Does Not Boot - Blank Screen

Nov 15, 2010

I upgraded 10.10 from 10.04 from the update button from within the update manager. It seemed to upgrade ok but after I shut down and turned it back on it goes to a blank screen. If I then hold the power button to turn it off and back on it then loads to a boot screen where about 6 options with recovery option are listed. The top 2 options do not work as they just go to a blank screen but the bottom 2 give me some other choice including seeming to boot up to a normal Ubuntu environment. How can I fix it so that it boots to a normal Ubuntu 10.10.

Ubuntu Installation :: Blank Screen On First Boot

Mar 22, 2011

I have a toshiba satelite pro laptop (can't think of the exact model at the moment) with 4gb ram + 320gb hard drive. i have been dual booting ubuntu for roughly a year, and throughout all that time windows has become less and less used, therefore last night i took the plunge, and went about installing ubuntu(10.10) as my main operating system and removing windows, i did this via a usb, using Unetbootin.

I used one of the .ISO's from the official ubuntu site, and went through the installation processall went well, no errors within the installation process, hard drives were partitioned fine etc, however when i've come to turn my computer on for the first time this morning i get a black screen with a blinking underscore straight after the toshiba logo flashes up and i get the choice to go to bios options.

If i do go to bios options my hard drive is listed fine, and if i try to boot from my usb again, it doesnt work, and attempts to verify dhcp and eventually tells me it couldnt find a boot file, my laptop however is plugged in via an ethernet cable. it doesnt work with or without the ethernet cable. i have tried leaving it for about half an hour and nothing has changed, i also can't boot to GRUB.

Ubuntu Installation :: Blank Boot Screen And Consoles

May 27, 2010

I have got myself into a situation where I see nothing during boot until X starts, and I have no text virtual consoles. I recently replaced my old 9.10 system running on hardware that seemed to be breaking down, with a new system with both an onboard graphics chip (which I disabled in the BIOS as the 1st step), and an Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS card. I installed Windows XP then Ubuntu 9.10, copied all my files across, modified /etc/fstab, /etc/hosts, etc etc., and as the last step I unplugged the 1920x1440 IBM CRT that I'd used during the install and tweaking, and plugged the display into the BenQ LCD on a Belkin 4-port KVM. Oh, I also installed Windows and Splashtop (that mini-Linux that fast boots from the Windows NTFS partition).

I had a problem at that point: I had a lot of trouble getting any signal on the LCD monitor, and eventually got it working but with the whole display half-shifted off the screen (everything was shifted to the right about six inches), and the Ubuntu splash during boot (the sort of spotlight effect with the glowing horizontal line with the light animating along it left and right) was shrunk and only occupied part of the screen. Nor could X detect what kind of monitor it was. I had a lot of problem with a lot of attempts prodding the LCD monitor to complain "Out of range!" (over the top of the Ubuntu three linked circles). I couldn't fix the problem, and in the end installed the Nvidia proprietary driver and ran its X configurator, and suddenly everything snapped back and began working correctly: X ran happily in 1680x1050, filling the screen properly, and X could now correctly detect the monitor as a BenQ.....

I've installed 10.04 Server on a desktop three times. The install goes well and after the installation, the server reboots and I can login with no problems. I can also look around the file system and run some of the utilities. My network can also see the server. The problem comes when I restart the server for the first time after the installation restart. The system starts to come up and then the screen goes blank. The computer is still running but there is no video signal to the monitor; and the network cannot see the system. I believe this has something to do with the master boot record but I'm not sure.

Ubuntu Installation :: Blank Screen On Boot But No GRUB

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 Starts To Boot Then Blank Screen And Nothing?

Apr 18, 2010

I have tried two distros - Mandriva and OpenSuse. Both provide the same results, though Mandriva booted...but still the same problem, after installing blank screen comes up and nothing. Keyboard touch bad, mouse nothing happens. I would prefer openSuse but may have to switch.

Equipment:
Acer 7740 17" laptop
Intel i3-330M Chipset
4Gig DDR3 RAM 1066
Intel Integrated HD Video 128MB

Install Win7 64-Bit no issues, wiped and installed Linux and I cannot get past this blank screen. Installation works, no problem installed packages etc. When coming up on 1st boot, login - boom nothing? Searching the web and I suspect the Intel graphics are the problem but I'm not sure.

I bought this laptop to put Linux on it solely for a personal project of using Linux for a year. I'm an IT professional for 23 years and comfortable with CLI.

OpenSUSE Install :: Grub - Not Able To Boot 11.3 / Screen Blank?

Aug 1, 2010

I installed 11.3 as a new install over 10.3, kept the $home and windows partitions, and let it reformat the other two partitions. NO disk partitioning structure was changed.

I did get a warning that GRUB over 128GB might not be able to boot.

I did enable the MBR.

GRUB menu does come up, but upon selection of SUSE 11.3 entry the computer screen blanks, and nothing happens. Selecting Windows does work upon power-up.

I did not have this 128GB issue with 10.3. What are my options? I am really afraid to install 11.3 on production machines now (running 11.2).

CentOS 5 :: Video During Install But Blank Screen At First Boot

Apr 11, 2010

I've been trying out linux distros to see which I want to progress further with. I have a bunch of removable HDDs. I put a single distro on each HDD. I just installed CentOS 5.4 on a machine that has had successful installations of Debian 5.0.3, Fedora 12, and OpenSuse 11.2 installed on it. I still have those HDDs and they still boot and run fine.

CentOS 5.4 installed in graphical mode just fine. I even noticed that it appeared to probe my video card (ATI Radeon 9250 AGP) just fine. I removed the media and rebooted and the CentOS graphics came up fine, and it asked me a few questions such as could I hear the sound. Everything went fine when it said it was now booting to CentOS for the first time, and the screen went blank. The monitor LED stayed green, however, so it looks to me like the monitor still sees a signal.

I'm guessing I need to boot into text mode and fiddle with the display settings, but I'm pretty much lost there.

I did a lspci under Fedora and it lists the following for video:

let me log out of my dang XP machine, and cut and paste the entire stuff straight from the machine I installed CentOS on which is now running Fedora 12.

Ubuntu Installation :: Screen And Mouse Don't Line Up After Fresh Install From CD

Aug 1, 2010

I just did an install of 10.04 from a CD. Now the mouse pointer has to be slightly above a button to click on the button. Also, the bottom bar of the screen is just a thin line and you can't see any of the controls on it and the top bar is too thick, with empty space about the menu items. It is like the whole screen is pushed down slightly.

There is nothing wrong with the monitor or the mouse because it all worked fine with 7.10 ubuntu, which was on the computer before I did the fresh install from the CD.
