I am booting XP and Opensuse 11.4 all was ok until I changed my old monitor for a widescreen monitor, Xp works ok but when I select Opensuse from the menu it just boots to a black screen.
View 3 RepliesI am a both rhel5 and fedora user.I can not configure my Samsung syncmaster 632nw monitor to display full screen at 1360X768.There is huge black space both left and right side of the monitor. I have tried many times to solve it but unable to do it.The max screen resolution is 1024*768 and minimum is 640*480.

I downloaded and burned Ubuntu from ubuntu.com (64bit version) while in windows 7 64 i popped the install disc in, and it went into a setup in which it installed it asked to reboot, and I allowed. upon reboot boot I could choose either Windows or Ubuntu, so I picked ubuntu and off it went. It started to boot into the (Ubuntu) OS, it shows the little ubuntu thing, then the display goes black, like there is no signal to the monitor. The PC still runs, and reconizes when I plug in an iPhone or something, there is just a black screen though. I would like to know how to go about fixing this?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have openSUSE 11.3 with an nvidia card connected with two monitors. In the past I used xinerama which was ok, but now I need to have two separate desktops, one on each screen. I set the nvidia driver with x screen, and now one screen works perfect and the other only shows a black screen. When I move the mouse over the black screen, the mouse pointer turns into an X, but moves correctly, which seems to me that the problem is that I need to set the second desktop to that screen. I looked on forums on how to do so, and no luck.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI downloaded the live cd iso and installed it on usb using this command (while it was unmounted):ddif=open SUSE-11.2-KDE4-LiveCD-i686.iso of=/dev/sdc bs=4M...I then restarted and it loads into a main openSUSE screen, I choose the "OpenSUSE 11.2" and it starts loading. Then it shows the progress abr under the gecko guy and it starts to load, that moves to a few diff. places on the screen and then it goes black. Any ideas?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI did a LiveCD to USB install, following the directions I found at [url] When I went to reboot to the USB stick, all I get is a black Screen (monitor is on and lit, just nothing on the display) No cursor or command prompt. I've tried holding shift to bring up the GRUB menu, changing splash quiet to nomodeset, or just adding nomodeset after the splash quiet thing. I've even tried xforcevesa instead of nomodeset still black screen. Looking at the logs nothing is current as of the last time I tried to boot the computer, it's strictly what was written when I installed it to the stick. Other things I've checked/tried, Pressing CTRL+Alt+F1 at GRUB to get TTY, all I get is that blank screen. I've Checked etc/default/grub to ensure the timeout was higher then 0. The Install CD seems to be OK but I have (as it did another install successfully) but I haven't done any throughal checking of it (there was no check this disk on the first screen of the LiveCD) The USB sticks also seem to be ok (in windows though). Using the disk utility on the live CD I did check the file system on the USB stick, the "/" partition came up clean. Anybody have any other thoughts on this install, any thing else I can check?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just set up a ubuntu 11.04 Desktop 32-bit installation on an older pc that I found in the basement. It was running xp before and had 2 hard drives so I left the xp install alone and installed ubuntu on the second hard drive. It all booted up and worked fine until I rebooted it for the 2nd or 3rd time, now after I select ubuntu from grub it just loads to a black screen. Even in recovery mode if flashes the text across the screen and then also goes to a black screen. Now what seemed really wierd is that the same thing occurs if I try to boot from the usb drive i used to install it the first time, but win xp boots fine.

Everything is great and all but today when I booted into Ubuntu everything was going well--the splash screen appeared and the dots were doing their thing and all--but then there was just a blank screen. Some people have had this problem after a fresh install of Lucid, but its been working for a while so I don't get why it isn't working... I didn't do anything to the system except run some updates before I turned off the computer.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am having problems getting my external monitor to work. When I plug in the monitor, both the laptop screen and the external monitor go black. When I unplug the monitor, the laptop screen works again.
When I startup with the external monitor plugged in, neither screen works or teh computer hangs or something.
I have had the external monitor going on a couple of occasions. I did manage to configure my monitors through System Settings > Display. I turned off the laptop monitor as I just want to use the external. But after rebooting, things didn't work.

I found a recommendation to set 'nosetmode' option, but found no easy way to do this on the current USB boot menu.Currently tried pressing TAB on the boot menu option and adding '--nosetmode' to command line, but result is the same.Does anyone have any suggestion about what I should try next?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a SONY PCG-R505TE laptop with an external CD/DVD, it connects via what I think is a PCMCIA card, the drive came with the laptop and functions fine. I currently have Windows XP running on this laptop, but it's very slow.I downloaded openSUSE-11.3-GNOME-LiveCD-i686.iso and sucessfully burned it to a CD.I have the laptop bios set to boot from CD, and it appears to be doing that no problem. When it boots I first see the welcome screen, then the openSUSE Installer, whether I select the Live (GNOME) option, or the Installation.. it loads the kernel, and then loads the KIWI boot systemit is on the third event, waiting for CD/DVD dvices to appear... that something seems to fail... I then see Failed to detect CD/DVD or USB drivethen a rebootexception and it reboots in 120 seconds.

- the system boots,
- the grub menu appears,
- the splash screen comes up and then
- I have a black screen and that's it!
I saw, at the end of the installation process, that the driver for the nVidia video card was removed.
Well, it's a long story, but to make it short I foolishly upgraded my wife's netbook many months ago to 10.04, not knowing that the new xserver version will cause me lots of grief with the gma500 driver. Back then, I ran an update that completely borked my system, and my only fix was to do another clean install. Since the, I just did not do any more upgrades.
So, months have gone by, and the netbook has not had any upgrades. I've read some instructions in the gma500 megathread on how to safely upgrade the system. To start, I had to purge the psb-kernel-source, do upgrades, and reinstall the psb-kernel-source and the other poulsbo drivers. I did all that, and now it boots to a black screen. I can't ctrl-alt-f1 to a terminal session either.
I really don't want to do another clean install. With the crappy broadcom driver as well, it's a real chore. And because of the crappy broadcom driver, I can't figure any way to get a wifi connection from the command line either.
I'm a linux newbie so go easy on me with technical terms.I've got a Acer Aspire One ZG5. Everything was working fine until one day when I went to switch it on and it shows up everything its suppose to, the blue logo etc but then it loads upto a black screen with the mouse poitner. I can move the mouse pointer around and such and the lights flash but stop suddenly.I can't use the bios recovery disk as I haven't got a USB big enough.

The install appeared to run OK, but when it rebooted to do the configuration, it hung. I tried a manual reboot a couple of times, then booted in FailSafe mode - came up OK and ran through the auto-config. Now, it still boots up ok in FailSafe, but in normal mode I get the wallpaper on the screen, but it hangs there.

I have Ubuntu 10.04 running kernel .26 installed on my Dell Dimension 2350 with 512mb of memory. The problem I have been having is, When I am using the computer mostly Internet stuff for no reason the monitor will go black then on the screen it will be at a terminal screen, kind of like when you start up the computer, I don't remember what is all on it but the last thing in the list was: checking battery state: OK after that the screen will flash in multiple colors and then it goes into a loop of just black screen than a colorful flash and back over to a black screen. the only way I can fix that is by holding down the power button. this will happen mostly on face-book on the games and just on the profile page, but it does happen just checking my gmail or play solitaire it does this around 4-8 times a day.

This is my first Linux so i'm kind of rookie.OK, let's start.I installed it something like 1 month ago and everything looks good until now. When I turn on my PC and try to login (deskop mode) login bar goes from 30% to 50% and then appears a black screen, nothing more, just deep black (cannot type anything etc.) I use GRUB - Windows, opensuse deskop mode and failsafe mode. Failsafe mode works good, but I have no idea what should I do because I didn't change anything. I even done a reinstall of OpenSuse and after one day I've got the same black screen.Someting wrong with grapfic card drivers? (ati 4850, downloaded from ati page, works good for 1 month) maybe some kind of new update which was installed automatically?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm running openSUSE 11.2 on a Thinkpad T61p with nvidia graphics. I'm running the proprietary nvidia driver.The battery ran very low and the computer suspended itself. After I woke it up, the desktop is completely black.After troubleshooting as much as I could, I did ctrl-alt-backspace, which brought me to a normal (non-black) login screen. However, as soon as I logged in, I was back to a completely black screen. But the system is operating.I rebooted the computer (warm reboot as well as cold restart) and each time the video is normal until I get to the desktop and all I get it black.Everything was normal until the pm suspend.Suspend has never worked exactly right, so I don't normally use it. But in this case, it used itself Next step: I logged in to console mode and looked at the logs. The only messages of interest seem to be in Xorg.0.log I found a couple error messages that might be of interest:

I have been using OpenSuse at work for years. My Windows 7 machine crashed on me. Instead of spending the time to fix it, I decided to take the plunge and install 11.2 on my home system. I have 4 one TB drives. My RAID card has a 2x2 1/0 RAID array defined (sdb, sdc, sdc, and sde). A fifth hard drive, outside of the arrary, which is a 250GB drive (sda). It is a software RAID. Here are the partitions I set up in the installer.
On the raid:
1.75 TB on /home
2.01 GB on swap
48.55 GB on /tmp
Off of the raid:
sda1 115 GB /
sda2115 GB /boot
(I know these are really big but I did not want to put any data outside of the RAID) In the final Installation Settings screen, I chose Booting and change from booting from the MBR to the /boot partition. The boot loader type is Grub and the status location is at /dev/sda2. I select Install and it installs without any error message.
After it installs, it restarts and I press ESC to see what is happening. It skips boot.cycle and continues to load to "starting HAL daemon ...done" and then the cursed black screen. I cannot SSH into it. It just sits there and I have to do a hard resest. Once I restart it, it boots into the non-RAD drive I get the follwing error message:
GRUB ..(it went to fast for me to get the rest of it)(hd1/1) message: file not found and I get the option the change the boot options of the Desktop -- openSUSE 11.2 and Failsage -- openSUSE 11.2 . I select e to edit the boot section of desktop and see

I tried changing the root (hd1,1) to 0,1 1,0 2,0, etc with no luck.What do I do? I need to boot into OpenSUSE and finish the cursed installation.

after installing openSUSE 11.2 from DVD, and rebooting the system a blank screen appears after booting process is completed.
Initially, I was thinking that was 'cause of the installation of ndiswrapper drivers (see command "modprobe ndiswrapper" not working - openSUSE Forums) but after the 4th (!) installation of openSUSE I really don't know what to think...
Sometimes openSuse boots regularly, and sometimes not... seems that there is no difference if I restart the PC or I turn it off and then off. Result is the same: sometimes I get the user desktop and sometimes not...
As explained in my previous post, I have checked the disk but all seems ok.
Now I cannot use the PC even in failsafe mode... I get always a black screen.
But what is more surprising is that I have 2 identical (identical!) PC with the identical hardware, and identical bios configuration. Only the monitor is different. Well, said that, one is working the the other one not...
To be honest, the working PC was an openSUSE 11.1 systems updated to openSUSE 11.2.
I think that must be something wrong on the distributed openSUSE DVD..
I tried both installing 11.3 on top of 11.2 and a new install with the same result on a couple of different mac pros (with 2009 ATI Radeon HD 4870 with 512MB of GDDR5 memory, 2.66 GHz 2x4 core Xeon 3500, 24 GB of memory). The install was done via the downloadable dvd from opensuse.org. The graphics of the install process looked fine as well as the configuration. When it came time to boot, however, the suse splash screen showed up and then the monitor went dark. The graphics seems to be frotzed. Now attempting to boot from the DVD does not cause the display to do anything. Even putting a mac DVD restore disk (and using C during boot) does not result in anything on the display). Any ideas of what the installation could have done -- seems like a no-brainer that something is screwed up with the graphics card, but I have no real proof and even less idea of what to try next.

After I restart my computer the boot menu comes up and I click the boot option and the screens loads a bit and then goes black. I have also tried the text installer, but that doesn't work either. I know the problem must be my graphics chip. I have a integrated Intel HD Graphics chip. My laptop is a Gateway NV79. How can I get the graphics to work?
I've tried everything I can think off. I'm not the most computer savvy so if someone replies I would appreciate a dumb-down explanation on what to do with clear steps, if possible. Note: I'm dual booting with windows 7. The graphics problem is not just OpenSUSE. I tried Ubuntu 11.04, Kubuntu 11.04, Fedora 15 and they all have the same problems. In Fedora 15, I was able to boot in but I got an error message that said Gnome 3 fallback and I couldn't get the graphics to change to standard mode
