View 1 RepliesI have been running Ubuntu in my iBook/g4 800, 12' inch screen since jaunty and I must confess that I have had a fair share of graphics issue, however, since karmic, my computer would just go off especially when the AC is disconnected then on plugging back the AC, it comes back on but with the windows or the previous items on the screen completely deformed, that kind of deformation you would only blame graphics for. So the deformation stays for long and a reboot is all I'm left with. While still in karmic, i thought an upgrade to Lucid would get things back in place but that never happened, so I have been wondering what to do. I thought of a key combination that would turn on the screen in an iBook but I cant seem to find that through google, so I'm left with just fixing the underlying issue which according to some post on the Internet, wrong graphics settings might cause the monitor to shut down unexpectedly. I don't know exactly what exactly am I supposed to do? If that post is anything to go by, here is my xorg.conf(I know karmic+ does not need this but my system needs it) code...
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 10.10 alternate PPC on my iBook G4. I have to used this command upon installation or else it went to white screen which doesn't go away:
install video=ofonly
Installation went smooth till the end.
After reboot, it did prompt me to pick l or c, then yaboot screen appear. However, after I entered 'Linux' and hit Enter, nothing happened - blank screen.
I have an iBook G3 and about 4 months ago after Mac OSX was corrupted I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on it. During the install the screen was divided and partly blacked out but when I installed it, the resolution was fine and the OS encompassed the whole screen.
After a few weeks everything on the screen started to turn pink until all the colours on the whole screen were a shade of pink! I decided that I would abandon my laptop as I had a fully functioning Ubuntu desktop which was my preferable computer to use anyway.
Following the release of Ubuntu 10.04 I decided that I would try a fresh install on my laptop. When I started the install I was disappointed to find that the screen was divided and everything was shaded pink. I went ahead with the install regardless hoping that everything would be fine once I installed Ubuntu. Once again I was let down, the screen was still divided and pink. I have included some pictures for you to have a look at.
I can't seem to get Ubuntu to run on my old Dell Dimension 2300. It boots to a purple screen then it goes to a black screen with a load of writing nothing else happens after this screen. [URL] Could someone advise how I can get it to work?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm attempting to install debian on my old ibook g3. Upon normal boot I get a black screen with a bar (attached image) I boot the kernel with init 1 and I see that I have no xorg.conf, so naturally I input xorg -configure. Attached is the log, as I am under Windows and read it. Let me know what you think and let me know if you need any output from me[URL].. p.s As I'm a new member I can't attach anything yet so I uploaded it to media fire. ibook.zip (includes xorg.log & IMG_20110707_203900.jpg /984.41 KB)
View 14 Replies View RelatedI just set up a ubuntu 11.04 Desktop 32-bit installation on an older pc that I found in the basement. It was running xp before and had 2 hard drives so I left the xp install alone and installed ubuntu on the second hard drive. It all booted up and worked fine until I rebooted it for the 2nd or 3rd time, now after I select ubuntu from grub it just loads to a black screen. Even in recovery mode if flashes the text across the screen and then also goes to a black screen. Now what seemed really wierd is that the same thing occurs if I try to boot from the usb drive i used to install it the first time, but win xp boots fine.
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo I've been using Ubuntu for about a month now. Everything is great and all but today when I booted into Ubuntu everything was going well--the splash screen appeared and the dots were doing their thing and all--but then there was just a blank screen. Some people have had this problem after a fresh install of Lucid, but its been working for a while so I don't get why it isn't working... I didn't do anything to the system except run some updates before I turned off the computer.
View 9 Replies View RelatedIt's my first time trying to install Ubuntu. My problem is that booting from USB stick or trying to run "install to drive" both result in a black screen. Here are my specs:
HP EliteBook 8440p Intel Core i5 M520 @ 2.40 GHz NVIDIA NVS 3100M
Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit deployed to USB stick using Universal USB Installer 1.8.2.2.Searching around seems the problem is the way Nvidia graphics card is handled. I found a recommendation to set 'nosetmode' option, but found no easy way to do this on the current USB boot menu.Currently tried pressing TAB on the boot menu option and adding '--nosetmode' to command line, but result is the same.Does anyone have any suggestion about what I should try next?
I downloaded and burned Ubuntu from ubuntu.com (64bit version) while in windows 7 64 i popped the install disc in, and it went into a setup in which it installed it asked to reboot, and I allowed. upon reboot boot I could choose either Windows or Ubuntu, so I picked ubuntu and off it went. It started to boot into the (Ubuntu) OS, it shows the little ubuntu thing, then the display goes black, like there is no signal to the monitor. The PC still runs, and reconizes when I plug in an iPhone or something, there is just a black screen though. I would like to know how to go about fixing this?

- the system boots,
- the grub menu appears,
- the splash screen comes up and then
- I have a black screen and that's it!
I saw, at the end of the installation process, that the driver for the nVidia video card was removed.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWell, it's a long story, but to make it short I foolishly upgraded my wife's netbook many months ago to 10.04, not knowing that the new xserver version will cause me lots of grief with the gma500 driver. Back then, I ran an update that completely borked my system, and my only fix was to do another clean install. Since the, I just did not do any more upgrades.
So, months have gone by, and the netbook has not had any upgrades. I've read some instructions in the gma500 megathread on how to safely upgrade the system. To start, I had to purge the psb-kernel-source, do upgrades, and reinstall the psb-kernel-source and the other poulsbo drivers. I did all that, and now it boots to a black screen. I can't ctrl-alt-f1 to a terminal session either.
I really don't want to do another clean install. With the crappy broadcom driver as well, it's a real chore. And because of the crappy broadcom driver, I can't figure any way to get a wifi connection from the command line either.
I am booting XP and Opensuse 11.4 all was ok until I changed my old monitor for a widescreen monitor, Xp works ok but when I select Opensuse from the menu it just boots to a black screen.

View 13 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Ubuntu on an iMac G4, and I had a promising situation the first time through but I botched the install due to my newbishness and haven't been able to boot from the install CD since.
Here's the situation:
Hardware
800 Mhz G4
256 MB RAM
15" LCD display
32 MB GeForce2 MX Video Card
"Standard" Airport Wireless Card
(more details here)
What Happened: After poking around on the forums some and reading through some of the wiki pages, I decided that 8.04 would be a good place to start, so I downloaded and burned an install disc. My first attempt booted almost perfectly, but I confused the "booting from the CD" with "installed Ubuntu" (Iknow, I know...), and promptly rebooted back into OS X.
Since then, I've been unable to successfully boot from the CD. Using the 8.04 disc, I'm prompted for what style of install I'd like, and I feebly type "live," the ramdisk loads, and then the screen goes blank, reads "loading" in the upper left for a second, the optical drive whirs for a bit, and then everything hangs on a black screen with a white cursor in the upper left. I thought I might just be impatient, so I let it sit overnight, but there was no change in the situation.
I know this isn't much information to work with. Is there a way to enable a more robust boot description? Something that will let me know what's going on when the screen goes blank and the optical drive whirs?
finally just got ubuntu to install on my emac a1002, I had to use the powerpc version. The install went fine, it restarted and loaded ubuntu, but after it loads goes to a blank black screen. And I imagine it sits there forever, yet I've only left if for about 5mins or so. The emac is from 2003, and has a 1ghz processor (Powerpc) and has 256mb ram.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've just tried installing Ubuntu 10.04 on my powerpc. It installed fine, and booted first time ok, but since restarting it just seems to boot into a black screen. My monitor says 'going to sleep mode'
I don't think it's hanging on anything, as I can hear sounds if I play around with the keyboard. Could this be something to do with the resolution being too high? If so, can anyone tell me how I go about changing this?
I have a 8.2 MBP with a 1680x1050 screen and a 6490M graphics card. I'm trying to boot from a usb stick ubuntu live. I'm able to get to the ubuntu menu, asking to install or start live boot, but when I select live boot I get a black screen( backlight is still on but entire screen is black). I've waited at that screen for quite some time with no luck.

I've tried booting while holding down C, and I've tried to boot holding down option. When the boot menu comes up it does not recognize either one. I've also reset the PRAM.I've read a lot of guides, and look through this very thoroughly. I don't even want to dual boot, just Ubuntu.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an old ibook g4. I was trying to install 10.04 on it. It booted from the cd,but when I installed ubuntu there were 2 or three error messages near the end that it couldnt delete some files. When I restarted, the computer went fine, until it got to a black screen with white text, which said it couldn't find files and said it would reboot in 180 seconds. I let it, and it just ended up the same. Did I trash my computer?

The screen will just go black when I boot from a live CD, but I can hear the login sound play. It's strange because all of the other iMac's run the live CD just fine. What could the problem be? I don't know what I can do to troubleshoot this problem.
View 3 Replies View RelatedJust did a fresh install of Natty B1 (previously had alpha 2).. I noticed this issue w/ A2, as well.. plugging in the exterminal monitor (via mini-displayport-to-vga connector) will do the following:
1) turn the screen on the laptop's display entirely black (but not turn it off).. i can move and see the mouse cursor.. but everything on the window appears to not rending or "painted" black..
2) external monitor never becomes active..
the only way to recover is to kill/restart X or reboot after disconnecting the extmon.. having extmon plugged in from boot produces the same results (and it doesn't seem to ever become active during boot up). sometimes this won't happen right away if i plug in the external monitor.. but opening the Monitors system prefs dialog will definitely cause (or detect displays) ,etc I waited to see if the issue would fix itself w/ the beta update, but it hasn't.. Any other 8,1 owners out there that can verify this issue? My (totally uninformed) guess is that it's due to differences in the display/gfx hardware and thunderbolt integration(?)
(I've seen a verification verifications of working-out-of-the-box.. but they were from 8,2 and 8,3 owners (which have discrete graphics cards))... If anyone's gotten this to work with some config stuff, I'd love to see that as well (since the wiki page for 8,1 says it works ootb). If someone could let me know where I should look to capture error output when the above issue occurs, that would be awesome.
I just installed ubuntu 9.10 on my ibook G4 and now i am wondering: how would i compile .java files and run then in xterm? What packages would i have to install? What commands would i use to do the compiling and the running? Would i use the gcj
