Fedora Installation :: Black Screen On Boot After Fresh Installation Of F12

Nov 24, 2009

I installed F12 with the i686 KDE livecd. A black screen with a blink "-" appeared after the bios information on the first reboot. The computer does not respond to any key input except "ctrl+alt+del", which restarts the computer. The machine is a dell inspiron 6000 with inboard 915gm video card, and the bootloader was written to the harddrive mbr. Any help would be highly appreciated.I need to be more clear. Installation went fine, problem appeared on the first reboot.

Fedora Installation :: Fresh Install Hangs On Boot / Black Screen Blinking Cursor

Aug 9, 2011

After installing Fedora 15 from LiveUSB and rebooting it just hangs on a black screen with a blinking cursor (underscore) in the top left of the screen. If it's reached grub, it isn't responding to any commands, and mashing several key combinations (such as ctrl-alt-f1) will produce a beep usually emitted only by the BIOS (hinting that it may never be making its way to grub).

The only particularly interesting thing about the install is that by default it wanted to boot itself from the MBR on my primary-master (Windows) disk. Instead I selected the option to boot from "the first partition in sdb1", which is my primary-slave (Linux) disk, (the first partition being /boot). This way I can change which OS boots by changing the boot order in my BIOS, and so avoiding bootloader wars.

Ubuntu Installation :: Black Screen After Fresh Installation Of Kubuntu 10.04

May 1, 2010

After the upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 resulted in a black screen after reboot, I decided to don't waste more time, backed up my data and made a fresh installation.

First Issue [solved]: After I inserted the Kubuntu 10.04 Live-CD and started the system, I got to the CD's boot-mode selection menu. When I selected "Install Kubuntu", I got the Kubuntu bootscreen, but the system hang up then. I was able to solve this problem through pressing F6 in the boot-mode selection menu and setting "nomodeset". I also had to remove "quit splash" from the boot-entry line. Afterwards the installation process was fine.

Second Issue: I wanted to boot my new installated system, but, off course, got the blank screen again. So I edited the Grub-entry for recovery mode in the grubmenu (replaced "quit splash" with "nomodeset") and booted into recovery mode. I selected "netroot", and installed the proprietary nvidia-drivers with "apt-get install nvidia-current". Afterwards I ran "nvidia-xconfig" to generate the xorg.conf. To solve the blank screen issue, I edited the /boot/grub/grub.cfg the same way I described above and rebooted. Now I don't get a blank screen anymore, but I also don't get an XServer. The system boots now (off course without splash and "unquit"), but drops me into the tty1... When I type "sudo service kdm start", I get into KDM and can login, but I get many errors and crash-reports there. I also don't have any internet. I only have internet when booting in recovery mode and select "netroot".

I'm a bit surprised that Ubuntu released a LTS-Version that causes so much trouble (I've searched the forum and it seems that I'm not the only one with such big problems). Has Ubuntu droped support for NVidia-users?

Ubuntu Installation :: Fresh Install Boots But Screen Goes Black

May 11, 2010

I downloaded and burned Ubuntu from ubuntu.com (64bit version) while in windows 7 64 i popped the install disc in, and it went into a setup in which it installed it asked to reboot, and I allowed. upon reboot boot I could choose either Windows or Ubuntu, so I picked ubuntu and off it went. It started to boot into the (Ubuntu) OS, it shows the little ubuntu thing, then the display goes black, like there is no signal to the monitor. The PC still runs, and reconizes when I plug in an iPhone or something, there is just a black screen though. I would like to know how to go about fixing this?

Ubuntu Installation :: Fresh Installing 10.10 Hangs With Black Screen

Dec 19, 2010

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 from a Live CD. I can get to the Menu where I get to choose "Try without installing","Install Ubuntu","Test Disk," etc. After hitting ANY of the options, it hangs on a black screen, sometimes with a cursor blinking in the upper left, sometimes not. From all the research I've been able to dig up it seems it's a graphics card issue, but I haven't been able to find anything exactly like my problem as most everything I've been able to find say's theirs continues to install but then causes problems later, or they're trying to load on a dual boot system. I can't seem to get past that first "Install Ubuntu" selection. As soon as I hit enter it goes black.

I'm wondering if I can't load the nvidia drivers from a command line before I attempt to install from the live CD, but I don't know how to do that. I have the .run file downloaded but don't know where to go from there.

Ubuntu Installation :: Black Screen On IMac G3 After Fresh Install Of Xubuntu 9.10?

Nov 28, 2010

I installed Xubuntu (Karmic 9.10) several times on an old iMac G3 with powerpc processor. Previously I had installed versions as 6.06 and 6.10 succesfully. But no luck this time. All installs were succesfull if alternate cd's were used.

The problem is that when i boot up i see the bootloader 'yaboot' and after that shortly the mouse logo from Xubuntu. After that the screen turns black and the indication light from the powerbutton turns from green to orange, this means no signal (i guess).

I assume that my screen resolution is wrong and cannot be displayed, the Mac uses 1024x768 if i am right.

My question is : How to access any configuration file to change resolution as I believe is the problem?

Edit: Perhaps there is a way to access command line to change config files.. ? Or using a live CD, but this computer is low on memory and has a hard time using live-CD's.

Fedora Installation :: Boot Freezes At Black Screen After Update

Mar 12, 2009

Tried the DVD install for 10. Install went fine other than it take for freakin ever, but after an 1 hour install, the update wanted to install 1675 or so updates. I let those updates install. 5 hours later the updates were done. Rebooted and now it freezes at a blank screen right after the 3 scrolling bars. System is older AMD 3000+, 1 GIG RAM with NVidia 5700 video card.

I did try and search some. But the only thing I could find was something about editing my grub file for a scan=sync setting (the information was basically gibberish to me. No clue what it was talking about or how I would edit a file on a system that won't boot). I tried to recover mode off the live CD. It had some options that said you could type Linux command line arguments, but whenever it got to the sysimage it says Linux isn't a command.

Ubuntu Installation :: Blank Screen Fresh Install On Boot - Not I915

Jan 9, 2010

So I currently have an install of Karmic running that has been upgraded over the years but I am repartitioning my drives so I did a fresh install on a new drive.

My first problem was the live cd would not boot and I had to use the alternate cd to do the install. It would boot into a blank screen and the i915.modeset=0 kernel parameter did not help.

After the installation finished I went to try and boot and found that right when it went to initialize the graphics, my computer locked up hard. Keyboard unresponsive and all. I read the forums and I tried using the kernel parameter i915.modeset=0 and removed quiet and splash from the kernel line to see if I could spot any errors but nothing appeared.

I am able to boot into recovery mode, and I tried even running an apt-get upgrade to get all my packages up to date and installed the latest nvidia driver but still have this issue.

I'm at a loss as to what I should attempt next.

Here is boot info, just to clarify sda and sdb are a fakeraid on my old setup, sdc is my new install

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Boot After Fresh Install - Screen Blacks Out?

Mar 12, 2010

I was able to boot up the live CD and install the OS to the hard disk. *Single boot. After I rebooted, the system loads up to the Ubuntu splash screen and will "eventually" move along. The problem is that once it moves past the splash screen, it starts blacking out the screen. It looks like the screen turns on for about 10 seconds and then off for another 10 seconds repeatedly. The screen blinks like this indefinitely. This is my first attempt at installing and or using Linux so I am an uber n00b.

** Also, I am able to ctrl + alt + f1 and get to the terminal so i should be able to run any commands without any trouble.

Ubuntu Installation :: Black Screen When Trying To Boot Pc

Jan 28, 2010

Last weekend, I upgraded my old PC and installed Ubuntu 9.10 on a brand new pc. It worked perfectly for 5 days. When I got home tonight, it wouldn't boot and got stuck on a black screen.

[Code]...

I really am a newby here but I think that the blkid command gives me my uuid. The uuid in the /dev/disk/by-uuid directory is in blue so I'm guessing that this is a symbolic link. And then, when I try to create a symbolic link with the ln command, it already exists... But the issue is that the UUID that is referenced in the error displayed is not the same as the UUID in my /dev/disk/by-uuid directory.

Fedora Installation :: Dual - Boot Into Windows 7 From GRUB - Black Screen Says "BOOTMGR" Is Missing

Apr 27, 2010

I've had Windows 7 installed for a few months now and would like to install Fedora 12 on a separate partition. I've tried this three times now, all of them ending with something wrong. The problem that exists for me now is that when I install Fedora 12 and boot up for the first time in GRUB, Fedora 12 works fine. ut when I boot into Windows 7 from GRUB, it just comes up with a black screen and says "BOOTMGR is missing; press ctrl + alt + del to restart" at the top. I don't believe that GRUB is booting into the wrong partition because I have no Windows recovery partition, just Windows 7. Also when I try and fix the Windows 7 partition with the system recovery disk, it says that the volume is corrupt every time. At this point I have everything backed up on a separate drive so I'm open to try installing Fedora 12 again even if it risks screwing up my Windows 7 partition, I would really just like to have a functioning dual boot.

Debian Installation :: Gateway - Black Screen Upon First Boot

Dec 28, 2014

I am a complete beginner to Linux (I understand a little bit of terminal from my OSX usage). I did a fresh install of Debian on an older Gateway laptop to try and make it usable for something. There is no other OS installed to this machine, I would like it to run Debian exclusively.

I used the UNetbootin application to install Debian from USB [URL] ..... Everything seemed to install just fine (no errors). However, upon 1st boot, I am presented with a black screen with a blinking white cursor. I cannot seem to get past this. I searched around and found this post: [URL] ... which seems identical except that their machine is a Mac. I had no luck using the REISUB reboot method. When I hold Alt+SysRq or Alt+PrtSc, it makes a lot of beeping noise. Issuing the REISUB keystrokes while holding does nothing.

Ubuntu :: Installation Not Completed - Black Screen On Boot

I thought I had the netbook version in my Acer when I booted it up, but I saw it was booting the full Ubuntu version. Instead of allowing it to finish installing to run from the flash drive, I stupidly shut it down and removed the flash drive. Ever since then, when I try to boot my Acer, all I get is the black screen of death. I've tried the flashit.exe to flash the BIOS, but no luck. So, I'm guessing it's not a BIOS issue.

Debian Installation :: Black Screen With Cross Pointer After Boot

Sep 19, 2015

Yesterday I installed Debian Jessie, I ran into a few problems at first, but in the end everything worked fine. It started the desktop environment (gnome). I installed a few programs(sudo, chromium, tor) and saw that everything was working correctly. I shutdown the system with the command "shutdown now". Then I booted into windows to make sure I hadn't broken anything there (which I did not), but when I tried going back to Debian, it booted to a black screen with a cross as a pointer. By pressing ALT CTRL <FKEY>, I can effectively get to other virtual terminals and login there, however trying to start the desktop environment with "startx" results in the same thing.

I installed Debian on an external hard drive and made four partitions, boot, /(root), /home, and swap.

I also tried to apt-get install --reinstall gnome and apt-get install --reinstall xorg, but the result is still the same

Not actually solved, but in the end just reinstalling got rid of the problem.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Broken + Black Screen On Boot

Jun 15, 2010

PC specs: i7 920, Ati HD5870, 4GB ram Installing Ubuntu 10.04 from a USB stick. The stick is fine as I installed Ubuntu on my laptop with it no problem.

Problem #1: The grub boot manager is missing. The first time I installed Ubuntu it appeared as usual and let me choose between windows 7 and ubuntu. Due to the black screen issues I uninstalled Ubuntu. Since then, every time I've tried reinstalling it I don't get the grub boot manager, instead my PC goes straight to windows. I have formatted the partition I installed Ubuntu on, as well as installing it on another drive, to no effect.

Problem #2: After the Ubuntu splash screen, I'm greeted by a black screen. After a few seconds my monitor goes into standby. Ctrl+alt+f1 does nothing, and removing quiet and splash from the command line didn't help either. I hear I need to use vesa drivers but I have no idea how to go about this when I can't even get the OS to start in the first place.
